There’s a good reason why people went crazy over this song; unlike most modern pop songs, this has a lot of “musicality” to it. There’s complex rhythms, a fantastic Motown-esque bassline, key changes, interesting chord progressions, textural variations, etc.
But the main reason why it got so popular and got a top 10 in the charts was because they still managed to make it sound modern and relevant to today’s music even with the 70s vibes and unique chords, with the lyrics and singing style. This song was so cleverly composed and recorded, Bruno Mars knows how to make a hit while still playing with his favourite styles of music
Yeah. Guy can write and perform, but he also leads a band (The Free Nationals) when almost nobody but the Roots or the Dap Kings (with Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones, both RIP) have gotten traction in this lane. It's a shame, but they're fixing the problem one song at a time.

Just came across your channel by accident, and was so pleasantly surprised. As a retired Jazz drummer who's played with some jazz greats, Herb Ellis, Harry "Sweets" Edison & Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Alan Zavod, and Pete Condoli, I had almost given up on music, until I heard Bruno Mars. You, as a music teacher, are such a breath of fresh air to keep the hope of music alive and are to be commended for it. I've told several of my friends who know of my background, that as far as I was concerned, music as we know it, is dead. Hearing Bruno Mars, gave me hope that someone is still capable of producing a "Melody" and a "Bridge", and making a song with a melody that will stand the test of time. I think Bruno Mar's musical compositions will be just as relevant 20 years from now, as they are today when the rest of the crap is long forgotten. My last comment is, you should also talk about how Bruno Mars and his ensemble use "Dynamics" in creating the overall effect of the melody and its effect on the song. Also, not only is the melody a gas, but the rhythm is cookin.
Yes! This song has more key changes than the last 5 years worth of music :P I'm so excited about this song... I saw Paak on NPR Tiny Desk Concert, then live at an Amazon AWS trade show, and on Fortnite.. He's so amazing, and I can't think of anyone better than Mars to pair with.
Never seen your channel before but man that part at the end with you playing the piano...
You seriously have SKILLS
For a reaction video, I didn’t expect such in depth breakdowns of the different elements in the song. Awesome video!
This song is a perfect 10/10
Jump into this time machine with me and experience true perfection and in the process a lesion in the lost art of romance. An absolute masterpiece!
They created something this world needed! Can't wait to release the parody version of this song!
You my friend are in a class of your own, and a joy to watch
Paak is pushing Mars to use his full talents, finally!!
I can't wait until this weekend when I try to work through this song on my soprano sax 🎷.
This Songs gives me the Chills...I AM A BACKGROUND VOCALIST ARRANGEMENT TO THE CHORE🤎👑🤎
I’m crazy about Bruno Mars... everything, from collaboration w/ other artists; entertaining visually;; and taking us through the timeless styles of music renaissance. Thank you for this video... Professor... great music / musical entertainment lesson. BTW- I’m new to Paxel... gotta check out his other stuff... Again much appreciate your time.
This is old school Motown soul. Who agrees? Absolute magic
Motown was just a part of it. I kinda think we just took it for granted because it was all around us. Real soul music abounded - replaced by disco🕺.Oh well.
So Bruno and Anderson went back to the 70s and brought back some black lights in the basement music but they put a new twist on some Thom Bell arrangements and Gamble and Huff writing style love it.😃
That was by far the best reaction I've seen to ANY piece of work I've ever seen. Im not one for silly reactions. This was a very serious song that needed very serious attention. Your vid was very informative! This is my first time seeing channel and I'm now about sub! Good job
As you went through the soul singers of the past and got to Marvin Gaye "Let's Get It On", I immediately heard that drum and said, Man, Anderson Paak has got it just like that.
