spite thy first of all, she is NOT a disturbance, there’s literally no other way she can communicate while she’s frustrated. second, “disturbance” is not a threat.
I think this has more to do with the mother’s reaction. She told the flight attendant that the child could have a meltdown and scratch people. I think the captain made a decision based off the future threat she posed-all relayed by the flight attendant.
I agree. And, if the child reacts that way to being hungry, why didn’t the mother bring snacks for her “picky eater”? It’s not up to the airline to have an assortment of foods on board. Parents need to take responsiblity..... and THINK ahead.
Yes because an 8 year old girl is so dangerous and gonna crash a plane. An 8 year old autistic girl who can’t control how her brain is is such a terrible disturbance to everyone and she should be not allowed to fly on planes because of how her brain is.
@@carolbentley4718 Ok but what if that child has a routine and is used to a hot meal at that time in her day? Is mum supposed to bring an oven onboard to cook for her? Maybe they thought there would be something suitable on offer, maybe they had burnt through all the preplanned snacks for reasons such as delays. You don't know. Your ignorance is outstanding. "Picky eating" (more accurately restrictive eating) in autism is very common and extremely stressful to deal with for both the autistic individual and their parents, so for everybody else's comfort, does that mean they should never go on holiday or travel? I'm sure the parents tried their best to accommodate their daughter as much as they could. Ignorant comments like yours make you no better than the people who booted her off the flight. Educate yourself
@@moonlight-fs8fz me too. I can't understand how people who are clearly mentally unwell get kicked off but kids who are purposefully being annoying get away with it
I have a kid with Autism. As a parent, you know your child's triggers and you are prepared for them. Her parents failed her. They expected others to deal with their lack of preparation. I would have had Mac & cheese ready to go. (The only food my son would eat consistently.)
Great comment! I always bring my battery powered hot plate so I can boil water on the plane, and cook the macaroni that I purchased in the airport gift shop. (You can't bring food through airport security, dummdumb 🙄)
The original comment and all of these replies were 100% written by the airline staff and lawyers 😂😂😂 This is one of the dumbest comments ever written, and nobody who has a kid with autism would ever say something so ignorant.
As a parent of a child with autism, it is the parents responsibility to make sure they have everything they need for their child to thrive in outside environments. This mother should have packed or bought food prior and been prepared for this flight it is noones responsibility, but the caregiver of the child. She also could have communicated better to the flight attendant....
100% agree!! This was my first thought especially knowing what the predictable outcome was and than saying how picky she is?? Mom dropped the ball, put herself in this situation, let her daughter down - I wasn't there to see the whole thing unfold to justify whether the Captain overreacted.
Bollucks Maria. You can’t take the home with you, you can only do your best. There is an infinite things that can alter a situation for a child with Autism like mine that you are so unprepared for, you can prepare the best you can (And you should) but you need a little luck and some empathy and common sense from the world around you too. As someone who is trained in safety critical operations like the Pilot, we are trained to operate safely amongst challenging conditions like this. She is not a rowdy band of hooligans chanting and singing over the noise of your safety systems. They caved into the pressure of pleasing passengers.
I don't agree with you when a mother ask for hot food from the flight and willing to pay it was their fault and refuse and the kosher even said what the outcome gonna be
Странно Хрипы this is disgusting. You’re saying just because someone has an illness they can’t control they should be killed. HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE HOW WRONG THAT IS.i don’t care if it’s a joke it’s disgusting. You really need to educate yourself more because if you really saw how life was for us you might be able to understand how wrong this is.
If the mother had not made them aware that this girl could be a threat they could have stayed but after the mother TOLD THEM she could get upset and have a fit and start scratching someone....she became a threat and they had to remove her, The mother caused all this nonsense and I wonder why the mother didn't get her some favorite foods for the trip if she KNEW the child acted crazy if she gets hungry?
*"How about if we wait for her to have a melt down... and then you'll want to help her." In other words, "It will be your fault, if she goes off the rails, not mine."*
That comment is what hurt her cause. The pilot might have made a snap decision to re-land the plane because of the kids massive tantrum, plus that entitled comment. Chaos of a plane is completely different from chaos in your house.
Toddler: *makes earpeircing scream for 8 hours in a row* Pilot and Airline: This is fine and completely not distracting. This girl: *Makes quitet noises* Airline: Then it is treason.
Ok fifth time trying to reply and I have to say my brother would most likely be more annoying because he is very loud me and parents have separate rooms and across the hallway with their door and my door closed I can hear my brother crying across the hall and in one incident you see my brother was crying so hard not only could I hear him in the basement while he was all the way upstairs when I picked him up I could feel his sweat and when he was done I could hear him kind of gasping for air and if they think the girl was annoying and would be a threat think again well what the airline did with that comment was kind of immature was the captain did was kind of dude yet reasonable (kind of) to why do I say this well if something did happen well what about all the other passengers safety and if not that then wouldn't the captain be nervous that could not only affect this plane but also all the passengers on board but still the whole thing with the flight attendant and airline comment all of that downright rude and immature what the captain did in the middle (also my brother is only 5months and we haven't actually been in a plane yet with him do to the pandemic so don't blame him)
I feel so sorry for the parents in that situation. Their lot in life is hard enough as it is. United Airlines just went ahead and made it a lot harder. With the public humiliation being the cherry on top.
We should start a nationwide boycott of United Airlines. Maybe get some autism advocacy organizations involved in organizing that boycott. This should get a lot more publicity than just one CBS news station.
I like how all the comments are skimming over that me fact that the mom said she’ll start screaming and scratching. That’s kind of a threat to other passengers.
Screaming is not a threat, and she probably meant scratching herself (it's a common way of stimming for some autistic people), unlikely the mother would have allowed her to scratch another person without disciplining her.
@@dinohall2595 and it's hard to scratch people from a plane seat. maybe her mum next to her, but that'd be agression rather than frustration which seems more like the way this would play out.
Same. Flew from Europe to US all the while listening to a baby scream nonstop almost all the time. But god forbid a special needs kid need their, well, special needs right?
The girl has a disability. According to the Americans with disabilities act companies have to make reasonable accommodations for passengers with disabilities. I would argue that selling a hot meal to an autistic child to prevent a meltdown is a reasonable accommodation.
Jen Chub I bet United airlines will be plagued with so many lawsuits for the future if they do not change. Not only the autism issue, what about dragging a passenger off a plane in an in humane way?
The captain is uneducated and doesn't deserve to be in that position in which he has control over so many people's lives if he doesn't know what an autistic person is, and if he thinks they're a "threat"
Karla It doesn’t have to do with being uneducated. If she was being disruptive, the captain may not have had a choice. We try to be as accommodating as possible, but sometimes it isn’t enough. We don’t like having to remove people from flights, ever. What worse yet is it required a diversion.
@@karla3153 if she was saying “boom boom you will all die” then I would understand how she could be seen as a threat. Other than that, not a threat. If she starts running around the plane screaming at people, it could be seen as a threat. She was in her seat making noise. Yes, it is annoying but little kids are so much worse. The mother asked for a meal so she wouldn’t get upset and she was told she couldn’t have one.
I have a brother who is autistic and often makes noises like this when he’s frustrated or just in general. I can’t believe people, especially the full grown adults who were working on that plane, do not understand that children may have different spectrums of autism. Some people can only say so much and some can only make noises such as this to express their feelings. People are so ignorant and uneducated. This is disturbing and heart-breaking.
HDXD her kid is special needs, she ask for certain accomadations, they refused even they they have to accommodate by law and the parent then said if she doesn’t get her specific needs she will have a violent meltdown which is worse for everyone involved and more of an issue and inconvenience rather than just giving the girl the specific accomadations she needs.even then they gave her the hot meal and everything was fine, the problem was over with yet the pilot decided to “emergency land” and take that amount of hassle just to throw off the autistic girl and her family because he was uncomfortable with having an autistic girl on his flight
if the passenger is disrupting the flight they should removed from the flight regardless of your disability. I once had a mentally disabled individual disrupt a movie I was watching. I was watching Lord of the rings at a Cinema and these mentally ill people spent the entire time making strange noises which ruined the experience for me. If you cannot sit still for a movie without making loud noises then you should not be in cinemas, planes, buses trains, ships, or anything else where there would be a captive audience.
Especially when adults with autism get shamed because they have to live at home and they get harassed for it. it’s absolutely disgusting that people have the RUDENESS and lack of education and brains to say stuff that could get them beat up, shot, stabbed, or kicked out of a place. I hope people who shame autistic adults for living at home do get beat up maybe they’ll learn to keep their mouth shut in public. I’d deck somebody if they said anything rude to me, tough luck, where I am from you don’t discriminate anyone if you do you’ll be sorry, people I know would smack the daylights out of an angry discriminatory Karen or Karl anyday.
Michael Stewart Are you kidding me guy? Your not very smart if you say stupid stuff like that. Somebody’s gonna smack or shoot you if you say dumb stuff like that. I’ve heard enough of your rude, discriminatory nonsense. Take your trash elsewhere.
I'm autistic. Her mother suggested that she might scratch which suggests violence. The airline had no choice once the mother mentioned possible violence. She should be carrying snacks. I fly with a huge sack of chewy candy. Why? Because I'm less likely to freak out and disturb people if I've got something tasty and chewy to pop my ears and keep me occupied. The airline did what they needed to do. If I'm on a plane and I see another autistic person melt down, I will melt down. Maybe don't fly if you can't handle bringing everything she needs for a trip? And never ever bring up violence.
@rachelfourie9083100% and I’m autistic as well. Just because we are disabled that does not mean the rules shouldn’t apply to us and using it as an excuse to get away with things is unacceptable.
I’m sorry, but none of you have autism like her or my children if you’re capable or writing these posts online. Don’t pull that card, I’m sick of hearing it.
In my opinion, the parents needed to let the airline know beforehand, of their daughter's requirements during the flight. Even better, they could have had food in a thermos container, knowing how their daughter would act when hungry. The parents are responsible for their daughters care.
So a screaming child who can CONTROL what their doing can go on a plane but a girl who CANT control what shes doing gets kicked off....WHAT KIND OF LOGIC IS THAT!?
The child you are speaking of was screaming, not a physical threat which the mother used the threat of her child having a tantrum to get what she wanted.
Each crew is different everyone makes a different call.. different situations different people on bored allots of factors. It’s something to talk about but I wouldn’t go yelling at them for making the decision if you listen to all the facts displayed in the video it’s not that shocking. She implies that her daughter could go into a kicking scratching tantrum and she’s much bigger than that little boy. I’m not saying it was the best decision overall but it what they felt was best for the liability and “safety” of the passengers.
The parents were supposed to make prior arrangements with the airlines with regards to their special needs child and informing them over his/her conditions that might trigger discomfort to other passengers or trigger safety concerns for the crew. Most airlines would gladly accommodate, assuming early arrangements had been made.
Mom’s phrasing is what did it, basically demanded to give her a hot meal from 1st class or she will have a ‘meltdown’ and start to ‘scratch’. This was repeated to the pilot, and he said nope, not on my plane. Was justified, the mom caused it not the girl.
What kind of danger shall a young girl pose? There are around thirty or more men on that plane. Does anyone really believe that she could not be held back if she really act violent. Mindset of cowards...
@@bigjohn4445 WOW. And this comes from an actual man. There is scientific consensus that men in an academic sense increasingly fall behind in shool, because they are not allowed to move and because the shool focuses to much on training polite behaviour instead of skills. There was a kid with autism who once sat behind me in the plane. He was very excited and nervous at the same time because this was his first time on a plane. He was making lots of noise but his father kept calling him down in a productive way. I was the opposite of disgruntled; I felt heart warmed at the father and son bond! His father and I got talking and he explained the situation to me and I told him truthfully that I was not bothered and that I understood :) he was never removed from the plane nor warned by any flight staff. So why did united kick this girl off the plane?
to be fair most people who have to sit near autists on plains wouldn't enjoy it and if anything would be disgruntled why should everybody suffer because this girl is a picky eater.
FlaGaLiner - because the idiot mother threatened the crew with the girl's behaviour. She was not kicked off because she is autistic - but because the mother indicated that there would be a problem if she didn't get her own way. And by 'she' I mean the bint mother, not the brat. The example you give is a parent that knows how to parent their child correctly - This mother made zero attempt beforehand to secure help for the child prior to the journey. And it is clearly not a surprise to the mother that the brat behaves as it does. I absolutely support United in this case.
You make me so happy! I love it when people understand these things and are so kind because my little sister has a rare disability and it makes me sad that I have to explain all this stuff to adults when I'm 11
United kicked her off the plane because her mother threatened the staff saying that she would have a meltdown, screech, and scratch other people if they didn't get food. That's a threat. The airline did nothing wrong.
I feel for the girl. I'm sorry she was treated that way. But I also believe her parents could have planned better to make her flight smoother. You can pack food or snacks for her. Or preorder a meal on the flight. But making a threat is not ok. The staff is not paid to cater to your child. Some are kind enough to assist you but to demand it is a totally wrong.
This is worded so well and compassionate for the child. I also thought it was strange when the mother was like, well you’re gonna want to give that first-class food. If she knew ahead of time what it’s going to be like, then why couldn’t she prepare ahead of time?
I have another suggestion: Talk to her doctor about the behavioral issues, and see if she needs a sedative. If yes, bring it with you everywhere you go
Ķäsane Ťeam2649 Telling the crew "she has autism she's gonna make noise" doesn't necessarily make it alright. Maybe in some cases it does, but usually it's like saying to the police "I'm mentally unstable, I'm gonna shoot people" see, it's still a problem.
Actually yeah you can’t say “well if you don’t give her the meal she wants she’s going to have a tantrum and attack people” on a flight. Immediate dismissal, that’s a totally unacceptable thing to say to an airline attendant.
Clearly the mother knows how her daughter acts when hungry or thirsty. Why was she clearly NOT prepared for that possibility prior to board the plane? This was not the airlines responsibility.
That's what I thought as well. I know parents who bring along activity bags and snacks for their kids while on flight. She should also have packed some food for her child as well. I mean, she's had her daughter for 15 years, one would think she should have been prepared for when her child acts out by now.

Are you aware that often now the only food on the plane is in first class? Mom should have brought food along for this eventuality, but she was willing to pay not pandering for a free meal.

Well the screaming kids, whatever it annoys people but it does not cause physical harm to anyone. The mother borderline threatened them by saying " lets just wait for her to have a meltdown and then she is crying and tries to scratch" The scratch part is what had the UA pilot worried, not that she was going to scream.
The problem with the screaming kid videos is that it DID do physical harm to the ear drums! For 8 hours, that is just horrifying to listen to, and probably dangerous.
I get that it's not ok to kick them put of the flight but I mean... if the mother knows her daughter will have a melt down when she's hungry or thirsty, shouldn't she be prepared and take food (that the girl wants to eat) and something to drink with her? If she knows her so well she shouldn't be putting her in situations where she acts out.
If food is here thing that mom is going to still have a horrible time in life. Feel for her too, besides the flight. It would seem from afar that this girl can only be appeased by eating.

Edit: to everyone saying you can’t bring food on a plane. I can confidently say that MOST planes allow you to bring snacks, as long as they were purchased after TSA checkpoint....
I have autism and let me say this is not my most people think it is. She wasn’t kicked off the plane because she had autism. She was kicked off the plane because her family believes she should receive special treatment and said that she would scratch them if she didn’t get it. Just because you have autism doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply to you or that you can get exception to the rules , it’s not a school where they can provide special education classes. It’s a plane, where every single passengers expected to follow the rules, regardless of disability. Shame on her parents for thinking she should get exceptional treatment and threaten disorderly behavior if the crew didn’t comply. Autism or not they still have a duty to discipline her and clearly they aren’t doing that. It’s not really the autistic girls fault rather it’s the parents for not disciplining her and taking her on a flight thinking the crew should give her whatever she wants regardless of the rules. Should have travelled by car instead. The victimhood mentality in society is real, we’re quick to label people as victims based on race gender or disability etc without looking at the story. The old saying goes you can’t judge a book by its cover. As mentioned in the beginning of my comment I have autism and although I am high functioning now it was worse when I was younger, when I was 6 I went on a flight to Disney world and was exited to be on my best behavior and would be kept for Disney world and punished if I misbehaved, the same was expected of me again when I flew a second time at age 11. My parents told me I was to follow the rules like everyone else on board and I have no right to hurt other people just because I’m mad, although I always naturally had an instinct that hurting other people was wrong anyway but still my parents taught scratching and other forms of hitting is not ok. Read or watch the story before labeling someone as a victim. Ditch the victim mentally and embrace open mindedness
i don’t have ASD, but i work with children on the spectrum and i have been involved in autism studies for years, correct me if im wrong i don’t want to assume anything i may not know. Based on my knowledge, autism affects everyone who has it in different ways, hence why its a “spectrum”. For example, some have fluent speech while others are non-verbal. Some are able to care for themselves independently but others need support. Regardless of what the needs are, legally, according to the ADA, individuals with ASD are considered disabled and need to be provided with appropriate accommodations so they can be in a safe environment. I don’t think its special treatment, this girl might not have the best form of impulsion control compared to others with ASD. Everyones brains are different including those with autism. It may also be hard to tell considering past diagnoses like aspergers and kanners no longer exist and have simply been merged into the spectrum. I think this is wrong and the airplane staff failed to follow ADA so provide specific needs. And if the pilot felt uncomfortable, well, then there should have been support staff for the girl or the airline staff needs training on how to accomodate for people with disabilities.
@@jarmamiiim autistic as well and I’m going to say that it is the parents responsibility to inform the airline prior to boarding to arrange accommodations as needed. Just because someone is disabled does not mean they shouldn’t be following the rules just like everyone else. I solely agree that her parents were entitled and they landed because the mother was threatening flight attendants with her daughters meltdown which puts everyone else at risk, not because their daughter is autistic. I feel like a lot of parents are setting their autistic kids up for failure because they coddle them and never teach them boundaries or ever holding them accountable. And yes they are capable of learning no matter where they are on the spectrum. Accommodations should be provided however, their daughter does not give the parents an excuse to be entitled. They are being terrible role models and doing her a disservice by teaching her that this is okay.
Yes, the mother should have been more responsible and brought food. But screaming isn't a threat. Babies, toddlers, and even drunks scream all the time on planes, and they don't get kicked out.
+marcel Chocano Yes, they can. You can buy food at the airport, and then bring onto the plane, as long as it's after the security checkpoint. I once brought pizza onto a plane.
marcelo Chocano Yes they can. But,it HAS to be from the places in the Airport.I've brought Chick-Fil-A on a plane before ((of course it was from the airport)).
Sounds more like the pilot didn’t want the kids parents on the flight.. because seriously she was like “oh well if you don’t give me what I want then you’re going to suffer the consequences” her mom is a problematic customer. The end.
I don't even think it was that. I think it was more the mother's reaction like the crew had to sell her a first class meal. Like you saw her reaction here (she didn't hide it). I feel like that may have played a part in them getting kicked off. God bless you.
Hmmm, The brat screaming, running down the aisle and kicking seats and people while the parents do nothing doesn't get asked to leave, but an innocent child with a medical explanation for her behavior and she calmed down after she ate was asked to leave, something wrong with that picture and that dog definitely doesn't hunt.
“Brat” she has a condition she cannot control. And she was literally calming down, and not being a threat to anyone. All they did was kick her off for no reason, making her family not be able to go their destination, and delaying other’s arrival.

I was saying that children behaving like brats while the parents do nothing don't get thrown off a plane, but a child with a medical condition and has an explanation for her behavior does don't make sense now does it? I accept your apology.
The family was treated very poorly. This child has a medical condition and the parents were trying to work with the flight crew and even said that they would pay for the meal from first class, but the airline didn't want to listen. The child ate and was calm, so why did United have to kick them off? There were no threats made, just a concern parent.
ReverendMary-Catherine Ryan. i agree if they cant act civilized stay home put up with misbehaving brats for who? for what? I fault the stupif ignorant parents who are cluelesd and have no consideration for anyone else
If you know your child is a picky eater and is prone to act up, you should prepare. Airlines allow you to take food on planes and there is no excuse for you to make your child suffer. You can even take homemade food if you put it in baggies or containers. This is no less irresponsible than forgetting a diabetic child's insulin.
+Katie Neves da Rocha, yes to a degree. It was a very poor decision on the captain to emergency land the plane instead of allowing the parent to purchase a first class meal for the child. I hope she wins the lawsuit.
When Brad Moore pilots a plane, let us know so we can duck for cover. They didn't win and were not entitled to a hot meal no matter how they threatened and cried to mommy. The other passengers have rights too

I think this has more to do with the mother’s reaction. She told the flight attendant that the child could have a meltdown and scratch people. I think the captain made a decision based off the future threat she posed-all relayed by the flight attendant.
Yeah, that really made her seem more dangerous than intended.

"Picky eating" (more accurately restrictive eating) in autism is very common and extremely stressful to deal with for both the autistic individual and their parents, so for everybody else's comfort, does that mean they should never go on holiday or travel? This mother should have packed or bought food prior and been prepared for this flight it is noones responsibility, but the caregiver of the child. She also could have communicated better to the flight attendant....

Mom dropped the ball, put herself in this situation, let her daughter down - I wasn't there to see the whole thing unfold to justify whether the Captain overreacted.

"The captain said they weren't comfortable"
*kid screams for 8 hours*
captain: um okay
I doubt the cockpit even hears it that far away
The captain is uneducated and doesn't deserve to be in that position in which he has control over so many people's lives if he doesn't know what an autistic person is, and if he thinks they're a "threat"
Karla It doesn’t have to do with being uneducated. If she was being disruptive, the captain may not have had a choice. We try to be as accommodating as possible, but sometimes it isn’t enough. We don’t like having to remove people from flights, ever. What worse yet is it required a diversion.
Dark Sparkle No, the pilots can’t hear anything. It has nothing to do with that.
It wasn't the noises it was the fact the mother said if she didn't get a hot meal she would become violent

I hope people who shame autistic adults for living at home do get beat up maybe they’ll learn to keep their mouth shut in public.
Nah you're just ableist, just say that.

yeah for the comfort of everyone lets make an emergency landing and delay the flight
Cooper someone was thinking in there head man I’m gonna be late ugggghhh
The parents were supposed to make prior arrangements with the airlines with regards to their special needs child and informing them over his/her conditions that might trigger discomfort to other passengers or trigger safety concerns for the crew.
Need more people like you in the world. Thank you xx
to be fair most people who have to sit near autists on plains wouldn't enjoy it and if anything would be disgruntled why should everybody suffer because this girl is a picky eater.

What about all the screaming kid videos!?!?! The kid screaming for 8 hours from Germany to Newark???
Well the screaming kids, whatever it annoys people but it does not cause physical harm to anyone. The mother borderline threatened them by saying " lets just wait for her to have a meltdown and then she is crying and tries to scratch" The scratch part is what had the UA pilot worried, not that she was going to scream.
The lawsuit for that screaming 8 hour flight would be easy to win.
jhaveman I know, that was far worse!
Was not far worse, was not going to or will ever physically damage someone.
The problem with the screaming kid videos is that it DID do physical harm to the ear drums! For 8 hours, that is just horrifying to listen to, and probably dangerous.
The parents should have brought food on for their kid-demanding a first class meal or their will be violence? Seriously?
I get that it's not ok to kick them put of the flight but I mean... if the mother knows her daughter will have a melt down when she's hungry or thirsty, shouldn't she be prepared and take food (that the girl wants to eat) and something to drink with her? Juliana Rojas Then they should have a special plane so people arent annoyed.
R.I.P Lim Jahey that would be a good idea
You’ve must have never been on a plane before because you can NOT bring food on a plane that’s is a strict rule in the south
Agreed, well said. I have Aspergers btw.
God bless you.
i don’t have ASD, but i work with children on the spectrum and i have been involved in autism studies for years, correct me if im wrong i don’t want to assume anything i may not know.
Brilliant comment, thank you.

Sounds more like the pilot didn’t want the kids parents on the flight.. because seriously she was like “oh well if you don’t give me what I want then you’re going to suffer the consequences” her mom is a problematic customer. The end.

As a person with autism, I need to say the pilot is allowed to draw his own boundaries.
니콜 Reread my statement, I wasn't calling her ” brat” I was defending her.
