I wouldn't say you should be a person who always takes harsh path of taking a beating for non violence. There's different ways to handle diff situations. Its his growth that is inspiring and how much he changed.
@@Crystalhair2024 You're right, there are many different situacions we must deal on diferent ways in our lives. The message the anime gives us is that we should always try our best to find the best path to deal with these situacions, the path that hurt as few people as possible
@@Crystalhair2024it depends. Thorfinn acts always using reason, in this scene he plays on his opponent's weakness (which is honor) challeging him to knock him out in exchange of a meeting with Canute. I don't know if you read the manga, but after that he takes this "no violence" philosophy in different ways
IIRC, Cnut was tired of his courtiers praising him to the heavens, saying that there was nothing that he couldn't do. As an object lesson, he had them carry his throne down to the beach at low tide, and with his entire court watching, spent several hours commanding, berating, and raging at the tide to stop advancing. Of course, it didn't, and once the water reached the foot of his throne, he turned to those assembled there and said, "See? I am but a man. There are things I cannot do, only God can".
Nine-hundred years ago, the English historian Henry of Huntingdon wrote down an older Anglo-Saxon story/myth of King Canute who claimed the throne of England in 1016. The story was of appalling arrogance. King Canute insisted that his throne be taken to the edge of the ocean where he thereupon commanded the tide not to rise. But rise it did, lapping his feet and beginning to swallow the chair. The courtiers rushed him back. The King thereby proclaimed the following: “Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws.” (There are so many pictures of it) King Canute then hung his gold crown on a crucifix, and never wore it again. Later historians, however, have shown that the myth was intended to serve a somewhat deeper purpose. A slightly better interpretation says that the king was tired of being surrounded by flatterers, courtiers, and people who imagined that the power of the throne was greater than the power of God. By throwing the throne into the sea, he wanted to show the supporters of the court that they were wrong. There are certain things that a government cannot do. These include controlling the elements of nature. Therefore, the king's actions were particularly modest from the beginning. He knew that the sea would rise. He taught his court a lesson that he hoped would affect the entire kingdom: there are limits to what a government can accomplish by issuing edicts. A government must defer to nature and nature's God as the true masters of the universe. Respecting what you cannot control is the beginning of wisdom.
It drives me nuts when people say season two is bad and boring, man look at this shit, this is art, peak storytelling and character development, people are insanely delusion! Every fucking episode of this season made my eyes tier up and that's crazy!
It's just that season 1 appealed to a wider audience than the target audience base. People could ignore the writing and subtext cause there was enough action in between but once the themes and characters became the focus it didn't appeal to them anymore
This moment was in making since episode 2. I could never in a lifetime could have predicted how much weight thors' words to thorfinn "you have no enemies" will carry with itself in future.
but yeah, as for the meat of the discussion between Canute, Thorfinn, and Einar... it really does come back to ends and means. the intention, vs. the reality of what it takes. Canute's argument is basically that his end goal is unreachable without the measures he's taking. he's still blaming the situation for forcing his hand. just like he blamed god in the past, for setting humanity up to fail, and abandoning them in their suffering. just like Sweyn blamed the crown for controlling the king... demanding that he pursue and maintain power, and presenting human suffering as simply what the position costs. Canute comes at things from a top-down perspective, with the idea being that, if he can consolidate power within his own hands, then he can position himself as the highest authority, and use that position as he sees fit, so as to bring his intentions into reality. if bloodshed is required along the way, then he will simply direct his personal frustration at god, and blame the circumstance for forcing his hand. it was never his aim to be destructive, but if it is the most fortuitous path, then it must be because fate is cruel. Thorfinn comes at things from a bottom-up perspective, seeing each person as an equal by default, no matter how lowly. he considers every individual to be reachable somehow, with the right approach and a lot of hard work. Thorfinn is willing to do the work, while knowing that there is no substitute or short cut. and Einar is right there with him, making an incredibly good point about the work that went into making this farm, just so Canute could steal it. it takes a lot of hard work from common people to make a farm. acquiring it the way Canute intends is just him taking a scoundrel's shortcut. and, relevant to that: can Canute even maintain it? he killed a good number of the guys who actually knew how to run this farm, so who is Canute expecting to tend the land once he's got it? to me, this feels like a common oversight for Canute. on the same token, who will live in utopia once it's built? who is paradise for? who can make it, and who can maintain it? certainly not a conqueror who's never maintained peace in his life. Canute leaves a trail of bodies wherever he goes, claiming this is the price he pays for the maintenance of the power he needs. the power is, of course, for creating a peace that will belong to his people... but only the ones who manage to survive Canute in the first place. what a bitter victory that would be. as Canute makes his decisions, such as the choice to take Ketil's farm, he becomes less relatable to ordinary people. he's more and more isolated from the perspective of a common man, and far less sympathetic to the struggles of his subjects. he makes decisions that will hurt them, and he understands how much they must hate him. Einar's presence here is so important, because his class of person was about as "considered" as that village of people that Askeladd slaughtered in order to feed his men on their way through Mercia. civilians drop like flies whenever Canute pursues the means to whatever end he's chasing, as they always have whenever vikings come around. why would an average person care about whatever Canute thinks he's building? and of course, I think Canute understands and is frustrated by the futility inherent to it all. it's as I said about Ketil... if you want power, you have to either earn it by proving you deserve it, or take it by being the strongest guy in the room. Canute would prefer to earn that right... but he's fallen into the "might makes right" mentality instead. at the outset, patricide was his primary means of securing the throne. when it comes to superiority, this culture only legitimizes violence. from Canute's standpoint, what other opportunities were afforded to him? and yet, Thorfinn and Einar have been afforded zero opportunities. that is how some people live, and it's all they've had to work with. using only their two hands, hard work, and hope, they were able to grow their wheat. it's one small step, but it's an actual, tangible, productive thing. it's one more productive thing than the king has done yet. it took everything they had, even when what they had was nothing. if you're empty, you can fit anything inside you. starting from scratch, all you have left to do is grow. Canute's inflated sense of power and authority has only left him feeling more and more trapped, and more and more bitter about that. in the first place, Canute was provided a picturesque childhood by Ragnar, and saw his perfect image of the world destroyed. he's been disappointed by the world ever since, so his attempts at betterment come from a place of resentment, first and foremost. Thorfinn went through hell. at the beginning of this season, he said nothing good would come of him staying alive, and that nothing good had ever happened to him. every time he's improved, it's always been a pleasant surprise that the world would have good in it too. and now, Thorfinn has quite a lot of things in this world that he really loves, and wants to preserve. even flawed as they are. none of it is perfect... but perfection was never required. even Thors sought redemption, they all start from a flawed place. the message is that it is never too late to start trying. it's never too late to change. and that's why Thorfinn has to try to say something to Canute here and now. Canute is wrong, but he doesn't have to keep being wrong. you can start improving at any time.
I didn't grasp Einar's point the first time because I was nervous about him talking to Canute! It was seeing reactions afterward that caused me to notice it. What you said about Canute is what I was going to say next episode! Less brilliantly, but with the same point. ;^.^ I feel like Thorfinn is in it for both the King and the farm if I'm honest. He doesn't like seeing Canute like this.
@@thatxavianxfeline723 yeah, I feel like Thorfinn understands that Canute's goal doesn't align with his actions here. when he said that he'd never forgive god for watching from on high as humanity struggled, that was said within the context of his grief for Ragnar, and his acceptance of the fact that Sweyn wanted him dead. it is situations like that which disgust Canute, and that makes the things he's done all the more bitter. when he talks about his convictions, you can tell the contradictions are killing him inside. he considers that to be his sacrifice... he'll go against his own morals, in the hopes that eventually he'll have enough control to silence the turmoil in the world. but how will he address the hearts of those he leads? Einar is correct... Canute chooses who he leads based on pragmatism. the difference between those he commands, and the people he crushes with that force, is simply a matter of utility. Canute is trying to utilize the intimidating brute force of warrior culture, while simultaneously attempting to solve it by the time he reaches his utopian goal. could vikings expect to be welcomed into paradise? my answer would be: only if they could manage not to fuck it up. it reminds me of season 1 episode 10... Thorfinn has a dream about his family living in Vinland. then, there's an invasion on the beach, and suddenly Thors' death replays itself before him. and it's striking that, as a child, he could've been a resident of Vinland. but as his self in that moment, he's more likely to be one of the invaders on the beach. when he goes to look out over the English countryside, he notes that it is beautiful and prosperous... as nice as he could ever imagine Vinland being. but Vinland isn't just a nice looking piece of the earth. it is a place far away from war, slavery, and strife. and as Thorfinn is at that point, he makes his own hell anywhere he goes. (EDIT: this also has ties to Askeladd's view of Avalon as a paradise where heroes hide away, and ordinary people can't reach. Askeladd thinks it makes sense that Artorius wouldn't return to a world like this one, and it's not lost on him that he is part of the problem. paradise isn't for people like him, because it wouldn't be paradise for long if they let him in. the river from season 2 episode 9 is more in line with the environment that warrior culture naturally produces.) the problem with vikings entering paradise is that, if they arrive, it won't be paradise anymore. ruining it is the thing they do best. they don't know how or why to maintain peace. and if Canute intends to utilize warriors for the brutal qualities that they are known for, then anyone who could've benefited from the creation of utopia will be crushed beneath the feet of men who could never see the value in it, even if they had it. the culture needs to change. Thorfinn is taking on the much harder task of addressing this, but it is the necessary work that begs to be done. Thorfinn has already done the work of changing himself. he has to believe that there are avenues for that same type of change in others. and you're right, I don't think Canute is exempt from Thorfinn's expectation.
This is the peak of anime. "I have no enemies" is definitely one of the top 5 moments in all fiction I've read/watched. This episode was by very very very far the best thing I've watched in 2023 Also, your summary at the end of this video made me realise how much Canute's character resembles Marika from Elden Ring.
I've noticed that a lot of people like to point out flaws in the "I have no enemies" ideology and I think they all miss the point 1) For starters no ideology can be followed 100% to its logical extreme. And the mindset of having no enemies DOES NOT mean you can't defend yourself. But rather you just shouldn't see people as opponents or adversaries in every little interaction. Most people are just trying to live their lives in peace and even if conflict does come up, 99% of it in daily life can be solved without violence or arguments. 2) They may be anime only so they're under the impression that since Thorfinn took a beating here that the show is saying taking a beating and enduring is what you should do if someone is violent against you. No, this is the choice Thorfinn made in this moment to appeal to warriors. It doesn't mean that it is always the appropriate response, even if some one is trying to hurt you. The story explores that further on.
This is the episode I always cry at. Absolutely best moment as Thorfin finally realizes his fathers words. Saying that he can’t hit anyone if he tries to negotiate for peace is one of the most powerful sentences said in this whole show. Everything that is said during these few minutes is absolutely essential to everything Thorfin learned and tries to convey. I also love the music choices in this moment and the respect we see from the Vikings a they realize what a beast Thorfin truly is. They all stayed there in silence as they witnessed a heroic moment unfolding in front of their eyes. And it is a big sign that they don’t belittle Thorfin for not fighting back because they realize he COULD (considering no normal person can take that many hits) but he chooses not to. I think some of these Vikings may have had a moral crisis later on when they actually reflect on what happened and that here are different ways of living. And let’s not forget about Olmar, being there are the perfect moment to witness such a powerful moment of inner strength that showed him: there are other ways. You don’t have to obey to your society rules
What's really interesting is the actual historical Canute was said to have done this, commanding the waves to cease. However it was different historically than in the narrative - historically he was showing the power of God through a sense of devotion - in this narrative he's being defiant - in both cases he's showing the waves are under God's control.
At 09:36, I was so happy to see you get so hyped for Thorfinn. I was on the same page as you there, and I was incredibly excited by how he shut all of the warriors up with his declaration! 15:02; how emotional you immediately got after the famous line, "I don't have any enemies" mirrored my own almost *exactly*. I love how visible that hit to your gut was! It's one of my favorite parts of your reactions--how genuine you are giving them. I knew you'd be emotional here, and from the very start, I've been waiting for it. This is my favorite moment of the entire series, for reference. Thinking of the pride this would inspire in both Thors and Askeladd makes me very happy. 34:42 I have commentary on this, but I'm going to save it for next episode. You may realize it before I get to tell you, but in case you don't, I'll be here. :D Also, the number of views and likes this video has received has gone up by more than 10 while I wrote this comment. I think many people share my opinion. Thank you, Luke. I hope you'll enjoy the final episodes of this journey, but I want to extend sincere gratitude that I was able to follow you through it. Keep up the fantastic work! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I was so excited for this reaction because of the last reaction. because yeah, watching Thorfinn get beat up isn't what you'd hope for. but Vinland Saga manages to pull it off in the most satisfying way. Thorfinn is still that scrappy kid we knew. and for him, getting beat up like this used to be so normal that it's barely anything of consequence. plus Thorfinn has a bet going, so even while taking 100 hits, he still has a strategy. what he's doing is such a subtle show of skill, and a really rewarding payoff for all the years we know he spent fighting, while still being a pacifistic solution. his goal here isn't to "beat" anyone... he just has to endure without fainting or dying, and they'll let him talk to Canute. Thorfinn's not losing. he's a true warrior, and he's determined to win the fight that matters. but that doesn't mean he can't get pissed the hell off. I mean, who would have more right? Thorfinn has been putting in so much effort, in the midst of all these men, none of whom have stopped to think even once about what they're ruining or why, or whether it's worth it, or if any other course of action could possibly be better than the absolute horse shit situation they've concocted here. not a thought toward whether all these deaths were optional. Drott literally wants to see Thorfinn die right here, for absolutely no reason. Snake says this couldn't have been solved with conversation... if it could, they would've just done that. but did they try? really? people treat this kind of nonviolent strategy like it's naively simple, but even just getting people to take this notion seriously is a huge pain in the ass. and Snake is really standing here, saying that verbal negotiation is so easy, and it _for sure_ would've happened already if it were possible... while also being the first to dismiss the approach, and trying to discourage the one guy who's actually trying to make it work. and because Thorfinn is an absolute legend, he can treat this like it's just a pain in the ass. Drott would be too much for most people to handle, but Thorfinn is uniquely capable, and his endurance reveals this behavior for what it really is. this is the behavior of an immature person with an adult body's worth of strength. when men have the ability to use force and intimidation to get whatever they want, they get used to the idea that nobody can tell them _no._ they throw their weight around for no reason, and never take responsibility for their reckless and ill-considered actions. this is childish. and Thorfinn knows, because it's how he used to act when he was a child. but then Thorfinn grew up. and then this is everything, right here: "I just met all of you today. we don't know anything about each other. we have no reason to hate each other. so why do we have to hit each other? it's stupid. it's just Canute and Ketil who are feuding with each other. the two leaders could settle this over a game of hnefatafl. there's no need to gather all these men, and shed all this blood. we just met today." "you are not my enemies. I don't have any enemies." that one's worthy of tears. just thinking back to Thors in the very beginning... he was always so awkward. he never quite knew what to say to Thorfinn. there was too much to convey, he didn't know how to put it, and he didn't have nearly enough time to figure it out. this whole set of ideas would've taken Thorfinn's entire childhood's worth of teaching, if Thors could've lived and raised him. knowing the magnitude of what this single line means to Thorfinn, it makes all the sense in the world. this thing that Thors wanted to communicate to his son, back when Thorfinn was just six years old... Thors was able to say it right after all. across all that time, Thorfinn never forgot it, and now he finally knows what it means.
@@thatxavianxfeline723 aaaaaa I really really really want season 3... I can't imagine them failing to continue this adaptation, after _these_ seasons. the folks who worked on this clearly had a huge amount of love for the source material, and I really want them to have the opportunity to show us their vision for the continuing story!!
@@kamuyking551 Me too! There's one scene in particular that may happen in Season 3 that I'm actually a bit scared of seeing--it's sort of like the Fruits Basket Therapy Effect. I know I should see it, but just reading it kept me from sleeping due to the timing. **SPOILERS ARE LURKING BELOW** The scene I'm referring to is the death of one of the Vikings; it's literally all of my mortal fears put on paper. An important member of my family left us before the new year, and I read that scene in April when I was considering what experiencing death may feel like/fearing it was as was depicted by the scene in question for my loved one. It was both traumatizing and validating to see someone else had considered it. On a brighter note, however, I am especially excited for the moment with Thorfinn and Garm! Here's to hoping we'll get there: 🍻
@@thatxavianxfeline723 aaaah, yeah, I 100% get what you're talking about. for context: [SPOILERS] I have read up through the Baltic Sea War arc, but I haven't ventured farther past that, mostly because I've vaguely heard that the story is being really depressing right now, and trying to follow that monthly would probably leave me in a pretty bad state. but I at least know to look forward to season 3. my family actually suffered a loss when I was young... I was around 10 years old, and it was someone even younger than me who passed. and I went through a long period of very similar grief and anxiety to what you're talking about, and used Fruits Basket as one of my sort of "security blanket" pieces of media. so many of the sentiments that Tohru expresses for the people she loves felt like the exact sort of things that I wanted the people I love to know, both those still with me, and not. and given how much a loss like that hurts... there's no reason to consciously cause any further suffering in this world, to the best of our abilities. we don't need any more of it... especially when companionship is the single most valuable cure for that kind of fear and hopelessness. if there's any uncertainty about whether this life is all we have, then we have to do our best with what we've got. there's no point wasting it on harm. not when that time could be spent caring about people, and creating a warm home, and making things just a little bit easier to bear. that was Tohru's answer to the pain of missing her mom... to make sure that the qualities her mom had didn't disappear, because Tohru kept them. I worry about that scene too, but I think Vinland Saga is simply showing the other side of that same coin. when your legacy is violence and destruction, what are the things people take from you, into the world of the future? those of us who are still alive can start making our impact matter today, because it isn't too late for us. even in the small ways, like what Tohru does for the Sohmas, it still matters a lot.
@@thatxavianxfeline723 also [SPOILERS] GUDRID AND HILD. I am so eager to see both of them. I want them to make Grudrid so goofy... in general, Vinland Saga really needs to get more women into the plot because they're always amazing. Arnheid was fantastic this season, but I cannot wait for the rest of the girls.
Please dont apologise for your tangents Luke. Thank you for sharing your experiences and life observations with us. Like you said, we, humans, learn from other humans' life experiences and opinions, and yours are very insightful. Vinland saga is such a deep, symbolic and philosophical anime that brings out these insightful thoughts and topics of conversations. On these Vinland Weekends, it often feels like we're a lil community sitting at a table discussing about life. Topics like people changing, regrets and resolve. Is Canute right or wrong. Is the greater good superior to the losses caught in crossfire. Having enemies or not. Above all, can Thorfinn talk-no-jutsu his way out of this.
😂 on the manga Thorfinn looks more beat up, the anime could not add the details of his face, but I would recommend you the manga, it has a stunning art style, the mangaka loves details, and for a long time everything he does is beautiful, I don't know if you have read manga, if you do, Vinland Saga could be a good option for you! 😊
@@CrossriderBankai23 . [Spoiler] Since the handshake scene was shifted, it was necessary to change his face, imagine the handshake scene with his beaten up face lol
15:05 Peakland Saga!! That was the moment when Thorfinn truly understood what his father said. I got goosebumps and was convinced that this story was a masterpiece. The message of this anime is very simple, but realistic and profound. There is a lot that people all over the world can learn from it in real life. Just as Arnheid was a symbol of the socially vulnerable, such as women and children, I felt that Knut was a symbol and spokesperson for all those in power, and Einar was a symbol and spokesperson for ordinary working-class people.
21:04 the exact moment Einar realizes that Thorfinn's life has been insane. 31:32 oh, but he does understand _why_ Thorfinn stabbed Canute in the face now.
@@thatxavianxfeline723 one of the funniest parts of this whole scenario is how Canute and Thorfinn are clearly seeing each other as old friends who unfortunately happen to be on opposing sides of this situation... but Einar's having none of it. I once heard someone say that in this conversation, every time Canute opens his mouth, Einar's ready to shut it for him. Einar legitimately has some of the most valid points in this whole conversation, and all Canute can really say to any of it is that he always knew he'd be hated, and that he'd deserve it. and Thorfinn's whole point is like... idk... Canute could just knock it off. he could stop at any time, he's the damn king, he's got options that wouldn't suck this bad. it really is kind of just the Ketil situation but on a much larger scale. the guy with the authority might have to lead the culture in a direction that doesn't suck, by being the first to decide to make better choices.
Luke, I love your reactions, you're one of my favorite - if not my favorite - reactors on UA-cam. But man, the fact that you watched what is imo one of the top 2 most iconic Vinland Saga episodes/moments and calls it THORFINN GETS ANGRY had me laughing. 😅 Anyways great vid.
I don't know if it will get adapted or not, but if hypothetically they adapt the manga to that point, then this ideology of Thorfinn "I have no enemies" will create one of the most beautiful scenes I have seen. That was the point that I actually cried 😢. Because I am not going to lie. When I first saw this scene, I totally had my doubts of whether it will be worth it or not for taking this level of risk. But when that payoff comes, it comes hard man😊.❤❤
I love that Thorfinn won everyone's respect by taking a beating and still standing. He found a way to prove he was a warrior without resorting to violence on his own. Make sure you google how Thorfinn looked in the manga when this happened. I think the anime messed up his face.

something really cool about the netflix dub, aleks le, the english va of thorfinn actually pushed heavily for the exact wording of the i have no enemies scene cos netflix wanted to change it a bit for the dub
OH MAN I WAS WAITING! Again, as I've mentioned before that when i was reading these chapters in the manga, i was completely stuck into them & just wasn't stoping myself cuz it's THAT good! But seeing these moments getting animated just hit as hard as ever 🤌 Thorfinn finally gradually realising what Thors been trying to teach him since he's a kid, to become someone even his father wasn't able to! This story is something else man, the writing is just so God damn PERFECT 🛐 (also i love it Luke when you cry at the exact moment i do it's really wholesome 😭) Also, i really wish that all the shows that's been upvoted for the replacement are just as good as Vinland Saga! Like everything I've seen people commenting about from *Monster* to *Rainbow* to *Dorohedoro* to my own pick *Ping Pong the Animation* are all extremely well written shows as well, so hoping we keep this pace with every new lineup from now on for these Friday slots 🤝
32:00 i would like to hear what would you answer to Canute, he asked Thorffin what he will do, what do you think Thorffin will answer and what would you answer, how do you end this in peaceful way how Thorffin wants?
15:10 Man i still remenebr watching this with my brother. We didnt know what to do against this magnificent scene so we just clapped at it. Like after a good movie in the cinema. It's just so masterfully done.
24:20 Ive also seen many examples of both, and gone through many attempts to changes, failures, some actual changes ect, and i imagine its different for everyone, but for me atleast, i 'feel' in an odd way that i understand and partly agree with what you said, but also sort of interpret it or feel about it the inverse way. People who want to change via their will struggle over time, some succeeding, sometimes an ongoing struggle of 2 steps forward 1 back and slow progress, and ive seen complete shocking backsliding of someone who had been different for a decade and suddenly revert and self destruct entirely, ect. I cant claim to really know how we all work as ive seen so mahy contradicting and varied examples that its hard to parse any clear standard. For me atleast though, the times ive felt or seen the sort of overnight snap changes, its not been because of a conscious rational choice (be it change for good or ill), but something just happens that changes the person regardless of their desires, shame, hope, or 'will'. The snap changes that ive experienced were not a choice, or a striving or something i wanted and worked toward, it was a happening... wether we call it a realization, wether its about circumstances or not, it wasnt about a thought process or emotional turmoil of 'oh man this sucks, i need to change things' it was just like opening your eyes and seeing things differently than you did prior, and thus responses and behavior changed automatically. Being scolded, shamed, losing one thing after another, reading a smart book, attended a good church session or AA meeting, these sort of things matter in the process i think, but ultimately things i strived at for years often only changed when "I" (the ego) gave up trying to force anything or strive for outcomes. Worry about consequences and how to best achieve a particular thing, atleast in my experience, didnt incite the sort of changes intended. I imagine this is going to vary for everyone, and from where i see things now, i dont even believe in the concept of free will, but i do think it matters what we experience to every degree, including what we 'try' to do or want to do even when failing, what those around us do or say to reward, punish, educate, or help us. Its just, the efforts dont necessarily transform into change until something clicks and theres not much control one can have over such things imo, sometimes its a long path one paves, sometimes something simply 'happens' that forces change, sometimes its a realization... sometimes it can seem rather random. For me, all the mental entanglement of wanting this that or the other, trying to change xyz, beating myself up over every shortcoming and hating every failure, in hindsight seemed to be the biggest barrier for those moments that ultimately translate to change. Thats just my experience of the thing tho, and its quite vague and ineffable really... but this is what went through my mind at this discussion.
Analyzing Canute's current state is incredibly fascinating. As you mentioned, he is now doing the same things that the 'bad kings' of the past did-accumulating power and using it. Moreover, he's doing this more thoroughly than any king before him. He despises the Viking traditions, resents the Christian God, hides his true nature, and relentlessly makes rational decisions. In this way, he could be seen as Askeladd's true successor. However, this is eating away at him, pushing him into a state resembling schizophrenia, as evidenced by his frequent conversations with his father's ghost. If he continues on this path, he may end up as a mad king, clinging to the ideal of creating a peaceful and prosperous utopia.
"To thine own self be true." So if you change for any other reason than for yourself, you aren't being true to who you are and there for the change is superficial. That's what I think.
24:02 Agreed. You cant help someone who does not want to be helped. Likewise, the person can only ever change if they themselves want to change. 17:20 Dare I say one of the best scenes in ALL anime! The ''you have no enemies'' scene hit so damn hard!
36:33 Luke, an anime that's coming out now is based on this moment in a way, it's called Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction. Only 18 episodes. THERE ARE A LOT of strong scenes, critical of capitalism, xenophobia... I think you would really enjoy watching it. It has no problem being shown here on UA-cam, there are no R18 scenes. The author is known to be one of the most brilliant authors if not the most brilliant alive. I believe you will like it a lot.
had my kawk out for season 1 psycho Thorfinn surfacing for a second there. The hype gets me every fucking time. abused this scene too many times from every single reactor's POV😭
Isn´t the will to change the first sign of change? The second one is actually how people change, learn and grow over time.. it´s still change. The first one is more like a realization.. like a bigot realizing their bigotry is stupid and flawed.. the brain can´t just go back after it made a realization like that. That one is very definitive and easy to see.. it´s not habbit, but belief. But someone trying to break a habbit, can´t just do so with the snap of a finger, unless the habbit is part of a belief that gets shattered over night.. of course, there´re people who try and fail.. but change being slow and steady doesn´t make it less real, no? Edit: Aaand I fell into the trap of commenting too early xD
22:00 You are right, one person acts they changed and the other has actually stopped doing what they were doing. To expand your point, I would say the people who don't change are the ones who don't love themselves and only live for the recognition of others. And so they continue doing what is not good for them from time to time because it's not their will. The people who can change overnight are the ones that had that slippery slope and can get back on track. They live for themselves and take their own well-being into account, rather than putting up appearances. The latter will be alright, the former... will dig themselves an early grave. It is very easy to dismiss that as it being their choice and that they are going on a downward spiral, but the only option for them will be help from outside. Whilst they might be willing to change and they can see what they are doing is wrong, they will need that help from someone else. Encourage them to change for the better, day in, day out, until it becomes a habit.

as for "the end doesnt justifying the means", if it trully doesnt, means Erwin is a horrible man who killed hundreds of men by his command for the "future of humanity" aka utopia Canute is dreaming about. But because people know Erwin's sacrifices' great results and do not Canute's they define the first as good and the second as bad. And there many more examples of bad things and, at first look, "evil" people creating great future/life, so maybe ends do justifying the end?
5:25 yeah, we have to uphold thorfinn's legacy uk, i atleast do the best to hold myself back even when if i get triggered sometimes from random ppl not liking the animes i like, i still try, its hard, much harder than what thorfinn went thru(XD), but i still try
14:00 I may have already said this under a previous video, but what you said about how it makes no sense to "come to a negotiation table with nothing but war," when your supposed goal is peace, and what you said later at around 30:30 about the logic of "the ends justify the means," reminds me a lot of a principle that's essential to anarchist philosophy, the principle of "unity of means and ends." It's the core difference that distinguishes anarchists from communists. On paper anarchists and communists both have the same goal, they both want to abolish class differences and other hierarchies, they want to abolish the state in order to create an egalitarian and stateless society. But the difference is that communists, at least the ones who subscribe to the vision of Karl Marx, imagine that they'll be able to use the power of the state in order to slowly and gradually abolish the state. Anarchists are very critical of this idea, they'll argue that the power of the state will inevitably corrupt you, because once you start looking at problems through the lens of state power, once you start thinking of the state as your means of resolving problems, there'll always be another excuse for why you can't abolish the state just yet, you'll always be able to say that there's this one last issue that you want to resolve first using the power of the state, before you're willing to abolish it. I think that a similar philosophical disagreement can be seen playing out between Thorfinn and Canute, Thorfinn doesn't talk about the state he just talks about violence, but it all boils down to the same idea, after all a state is defined as an organization that tries to enforce its monopoly on 'legitimate' violence within the territory that it controls, and then uses that violence to enforce its will upon its subjects. That's what Canute wants to do, he wants to use the violent power that he has as King of England and Denmark, in order to force people to obey his will, and theoretically use that power to build towards some kind of utopia. But this creates a perverse incentive, he'll always be able to find an excuse for why he has to maintain that power, why he has to make sacrifices for the greater good because he has to fund his soldiers or scare people into obeying him, it's hard to imagine how an approach that is so centered around using the violent power of the state, could ever get to the point where the state is actually abolished and where an actual utopia is created in which people are no longer controlled through violence and fear. But then on the other hand there's Thorfinn, his ambitions are similar, but he wants to achieve them in a less self-contradictory way, he wants to create a peaceful society through peaceful means, putting him more on the side of anarchists in the communist/anarchist debate, because his means and his ends are aligned instead of contradicting one another.
You said you like different opnions so here we go. Back in Lockdown ive only have the socials to connect to the world. Troughout it i could see things that i didnt see it before, conditions that others go through just because the way they are born and i thought just bad luck, you know? With this new information in mind, i could see other persons that dindt follow, and i start splitng a part from that ones i could, but not all of them. Going back to normal life, i realise that there was more people that i should split a part, but i couldnt, they share with me the same places, the same lives, i just could have control of it, i just started back to may old habits, but this time i have in mind all that previous information, i just need to survive, dont get crazy. That been said, i dont think keep old habits is a declaration the person is faking, problaly is something that she cant run from or fight with her strength right now.
Canute's motives are weird cuz it's like as you said he's more of like a "good tyrant" he genuinely believes that the world is so ugly with all the war and slavery and pretty much is like thorfinn but instead of NOT fighting at all he's fighting so that the world doesn't need to fight any longer although power might take over sometimes like how he killed his brother, all for "lost love" as he mentioned ..love that is equal among all humanity including vikings , also don't know if you know this but he does make an effort so that people losing their life is something that is as minimal as possible he doesn't want to kill he just needs wealth and land "strength" to build his paradise. Hope that makes you understand him a lil bit more .. me personally i see it as unrealistic but you gotta respect the man's ambitions
@@Ash_Wen-li that IS true .. ig that IS the one flaw (well there are many flaws with his idea tbh cuz i simply can't see how it's even possible) but also i feel like he's not exhausting all options before taking over. for an example he COULD maybe raise taxes on the farms even more or even take it from somewhere else that wouldn't include fighting and gradually but peacefully build the paradise he wants . But sometimes when it all fails there's really no other options he will have to be hated in order to achieve his dream, it doesn't matter if you're a good tyrant you're still just a tyrant to them
34:56 True, Canute's conscious self is unaware he became slave to the Crown, but his subconscious is screaming he is doing horrible things. That's why he keeps seeing his father's head approving his most nefarious actions: That's not a ghost, but the portion of his mind who doesn't approve his choices and keeps showing Canute how similar he has become to king Sweyn. 35:28 I think Askeladd would agree with you. Remember when the young prince asked the man why he chose him to become king instead of claiming the throne for himself? (episode 22 of season 1) Askeladd answered it was because Canute was different from himself and king Sweyn, being not a Viking. Now Canute is proclaiming he is the Viking chief of all Viking chiefs. He has become what both him and Askeladd fought against.
@@redactedsouls6367 I think he likes the show or else why would he watch these reactions? He's just trolling and pretending that he doesn't like the show but deep down he does, basically he's a tsundere.

Kanute makes total sense from secular perspective. Symbol of law is Themis, blindfolded deity with weights and sword. Whom Themis will be without a sword? Annoying blind woman. Peace rests on edges of spears. Thats how Pax Romana, Pax Mongolica, Pax Britannica, Pax Russia, Pax Americana function: one centre of violence which does not allow violence for the rest, securing peace inside its sphere of control. Kanute going to build his own Pax, shutting all violent conflicts inside his empire. Only problem that people outside have no such privilege and will be harmed for sake of upholding the order. However his philosophy is flawed: he thinks God's order causes suffering, although it is obvious that violation of this order causes suffering and will end only if people will stop wrestling with God. All crimes which caused Canute to think about his rebellion were caused by people paying little to no attention to God.
I disagree. Canute knows that suffering is caused by ignoring God's law. But because of original sin, people are fated to sin. That means that there's a large chunk of people that will suffer and never see paradise. Canute is defying God by creating a paradise on Earth (or laying the seeds for it), despite God saying it's impossible.
@@Ash_Wen-li people are not fated to sin. They have freedom to choose it and not repent after falling there. Calvinists are long proved to be wrong. And God don't need to explicitly say that paradise without him is impossible. It is literally impossible. God is the source of all good, evil is the vacuum of God's energy. Outside of God's context you cannot build paradise, only pseudo utopias (pretty facades with scary secrets). The further from God you'll build your order, the more grotesque it will be. He said humans are lost wondering what is good and evil. Isn't his endeavour is just another reflection of this wandering and being lost? Canute and Torfinn are the conflict of enlightenment and Christian ideas, pseudo-utopia against true Heaven. I know Torfinn is not Christian, but his rules are reflection basics

15:00 The power of those words, driving any viewer to tears, from the sheer respect and inspiration of Thorfinn's growth. The GOAT.
Yes, FINALLY!!!
that praise is so transcendental
Thorfinn is someone everybody in the world should look up for. He's the person you should inspire to be.
I wouldn't say you should be a person who always takes harsh path of taking a beating for non violence. There's different ways to handle diff situations. Its his growth that is inspiring and how much he changed.
@@Crystalhair2024 I mean he only takes a beating like this once. The rest of the story is seeing him tested in different ways
@@Ash_Wen-li Did you read the new chapter? Am so freaking scared for what's about to go down cuz I don't see this ending well 😭
@@Crystalhair2024 You're right, there are many different situacions we must deal on diferent ways in our lives.
"That messenger certainly is used to taking a beating."
ASKELADD RAISED THAT MAN 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
27:50 This scene is said to be based on the tale "King Canute and the Tide," as written by the historian Henry of Huntingdon.
The King thereby proclaimed the following: “Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws.” (There are so many pictures of it)
King Canute then hung his gold crown on a crucifix, and never wore it again.
A underrated part of the "I have no enemies" part is that Thorfinn has the same sparkle in his eyes that Thorkell noticed in Thors and Canute...
It drives me nuts when people say season two is bad and boring, man look at this shit, this is art, peak storytelling and character development, people are insanely delusion! Every fucking episode of this season made my eyes tier up and that's crazy!

@@virtualmartiniI see it all the time. Consider yourself lucky
This moment was in making since episode 2. I could never in a lifetime could have predicted how much weight thors' words to thorfinn "you have no enemies" will carry with itself in future.
Here we go. The peak of Vinland Saga. I was waiting for this episode
but yeah, as for the meat of the discussion between Canute, Thorfinn, and Einar... it really does come back to ends and means. the intention, vs. the reality of what it takes.
Askeladd thinks it makes sense that Artorius wouldn't return to a world like this one, and it's not lost on him that he is part of the problem. paradise isn't for people like him, because it wouldn't be paradise for long if they let him in. the river from season 2 episode 9 is more in line with the environment that warrior culture naturally produces.)
the problem with vikings entering paradise is that, if they arrive, it won't be paradise anymore. ruining it is the thing they do best. they don't know how or why to maintain peace. and if Canute intends to utilize warriors for the brutal qualities that they are known for, then anyone who could've benefited from the creation of utopia will be crushed beneath the feet of men who could never see the value in it, even if they had it.
the culture needs to change.
This episode was by very very very far the best thing I've watched in 2023
Also, your summary at the end of this video made me realise how much Canute's character resembles Marika from Elden Ring.
I've noticed that a lot of people like to point out flaws in the "I have no enemies" ideology and I think they all miss the point
1) For starters no ideology can be followed 100% to its logical extreme.
Snake's inner monologue when Einar was holding him back: Damn this farmer got insane grip strength
I laughed too hard at this😂
This is the episode I always cry at.
Also, the number of views and likes this video has received has gone up by more than 10 while I wrote this comment.
Drott would be too much for most people to handle, but Thorfinn is uniquely capable, and his endurance reveals this behavior for what it really is. this is the behavior of an immature person with an adult body's worth of strength. when men have the ability to use force and intimidation to get whatever they want, they get used to the idea that nobody can tell them _no._ they throw their weight around for no reason, and never take responsibility for their reckless and ill-considered actions. this is childish. and Thorfinn knows, because it's how he used to act when he was a child. but then Thorfinn grew up.
and then this is everything, right here:
"I just met all of you today. we don't know anything about each other. we have no reason to hate each other. so why do we have to hit each other? it's stupid. it's just Canute and Ketil who are feuding with each other. the two leaders could settle this over a game of hnefatafl. there's no need to gather all these men, and shed all this blood. we just met today."
"you are not my enemies. I don't have any enemies."
that one's worthy of tears.
just thinking back to Thors in the very beginning... he was always so awkward. he never quite knew what to say to Thorfinn. there was too much to convey, he didn't know how to put it, and he didn't have nearly enough time to figure it out. this whole set of ideas would've taken Thorfinn's entire childhood's worth of teaching, if Thors could've lived and raised him. knowing the magnitude of what this single line means to Thorfinn, it makes all the sense in the world. this thing that Thors wanted to communicate to his son, back when Thorfinn was just six years old... Thors was able to say it right after all. across all that time, Thorfinn never forgot it, and now he finally knows what it means.
Beautifully said.
**SPOILERS ARE LURKING BELOW**
The scene I'm referring to is the death of one of the Vikings; it's literally all of my mortal fears put on paper.
Here's to hoping we'll get there: 🍻
@@thatxavianxfeline723 aaaah, yeah, I 100% get what you're talking about. for context:
[SPOILERS]
I have read up through the Baltic Sea War arc, but I haven't ventured farther past that, mostly because I've vaguely heard that the story is being really depressing right now, and trying to follow that monthly would probably leave me in a pretty bad state. but I at least know to look forward to season 3.
my family actually suffered a loss when I was young...

GUDRID AND HILD.

My favorite manga and anime ever
Literally nothing will ever top this
15:05 Peakland Saga!!
I absolutely love this season and these final few episode's payoff is absolutely amazing. Had me in tears too
21:04 the exact moment Einar realizes that Thorfinn's life has been insane.
31:32 oh, but he does understand _why_ Thorfinn stabbed Canute in the face now.
I hadn't really grasped those concepts, but the way you delivered them was very funny!
@@kamuyking551 your comments on every video are so goated lmao really made me love vinland saga so much more
@@ameerioo4757 thank you for taking the time to read any of them! tbh, increasing Vinland Saga appreciation is all I could ever ask for.☺
Luke, I love your reactions, you're one of my favorite - if not my favorite - reactors on UA-cam.
But man, the fact that you watched what is imo one of the top 2 most iconic Vinland Saga episodes/moments and calls it THORFINN GETS ANGRY had me laughing. 😅
Anyways great vid.
But when that payoff comes, it comes hard man😊.❤❤
*music swells* I have no enemies. Chills, every time.
I love that Thorfinn won everyone's respect by taking a beating and still standing. He found a way to prove he was a warrior without resorting to violence on his own.
Make sure you google how Thorfinn looked in the manga when this happened. I think the anime messed up his face.
If Thorfinn had an ego: bruh i could take 10 of you Jomsvikings at once
Nine-hundred years ago, the English historian Henry of Huntingdon wrote down an older Anglo-Saxon story/myth of King Canute who claimed the throne of England in 1016. The story was of appalling arrogance.
King Canute insisted that his throne be taken to the edge of the ocean where he thereupon commanded the tide not to rise. But rise it did, lapping his feet and beginning to swallow the chair. The courtiers rushed him back.
Respecting what you cannot control is the beginning of wisdom.

something really cool about the netflix dub, aleks le, the english va of thorfinn actually pushed heavily for the exact wording of the i have no enemies scene cos netflix wanted to change it a bit for the dub
This story is something else man, the writing is just so God damn PERFECT 🛐 (also i love it Luke when you cry at the exact moment i do it's really wholesome 😭)
Also, i really wish that all the shows that's been upvoted for the replacement are just as good as Vinland Saga! Like everything I've seen people commenting about from *Monster* to *Rainbow* to *Dorohedoro* to my own pick *Ping Pong the Animation* are all extremely well written shows as well, so hoping we keep this pace with every new lineup from now on for these Friday slots 🤝
"I have no enemies."
It really makes me cry to think of the twists and turns in the story before Thorfinn said this.
32:00 i would like to hear what would you answer to Canute, he asked Thorffin what he will do, what do you think Thorffin will answer and what would you answer, how do you end this in peaceful way how Thorffin wants?
Yeaa
What makes it so beautiful... is that Thors was once called the Troll, and now Thorfinn has a trollnose. True poetry at work.

Canelo, a boxer also uses this same tactic as thorfin to mitigate damage when getting hit
Thats just my experience of the thing tho, and its quite vague and ineffable really... but this is what went through my mind at this discussion.
this is a masterclass on making a character feel epic without betraying his writing, fucking amazing
15:00 PEAK MOMENT ❤

Sometimes to do good, you must commit evil. A paradox that continues to stump humanity even now.
This is way Vinland is masterpiece they show the poetry and some best quotes in this anime so deep meaning
"I don't have any enemies" is one of my favorite quotes among all animes. I apply this to my life too.
Thorfinn be like: I DIDNT HEAR NO BELL
One of the best episodes in any anime

Thorfinn can be a really good stunt actor
Ppl can change without becoming drasticaly someone else, what you explained is still a change. If they go back they go back, some ppl don't.
But tbh tho, that scene when thorfinn raised his hair hit WAY harder in the manga
had my kawk out for season 1 psycho Thorfinn surfacing for a second there. The hype gets me every fucking time. abused this scene too many times from every single reactor's POV😭
17:50 Not just one of the best scenes in Vinland - one of the best in all of anime.
Canute is not threatening to kill everyone on the farm (at this point); he is only threatening Thorfinn.
Canute completely steals the season in this one episode, great character.

That are still alive 😊
14:00 I may have already said this under a previous video, but what you said about how it makes no sense to "come to a negotiation table with nothing but war," when your supposed goal is peace, and what you said later at around 30:30 about the logic of "the ends justify the means," reminds me a lot of a principle that's essential to anarchist philosophy, the principle of "unity of means and ends."
It's the core difference that distinguishes anarchists from communists.
*FU*CKING I HAVE NO ENEMIES!!!*
Canute is just a bit tunnel visioned because he has no good advisors
@@Ash_Wen-li that IS true .. ig that IS the one flaw (well there are many flaws with his idea tbh cuz i simply can't see how it's even possible) but also i feel like he's not exhausting all options before taking over. for an example he COULD maybe raise taxes on the farms even more or even take it from somewhere else that wouldn't include fighting and gradually but peacefully build the paradise he wants . But sometimes when it all fails there's really no other options he will have to be hated in order to achieve his dream, it doesn't matter if you're a good tyrant you're still just a tyrant to them
I can't wait for episode 23 now just 1 more day
I have no enemies, No one has any!
