  • We have a decision to make!
    We were finally able to have our private well drilled. Unfortunately though, we went 680' down and have a water flow of only 1/2 gallon per minute. Now we need to decide what to do. We have three options...
    The first part of this video is where we are educated about by a gentlemen who has been drilling wells his entire life. We learn about well drilling and pumps (starts at 26 seconds) and the second half is where we (Rich & Kathie) discuss our three options as to what to do about the minimal flow rate (starts at 7 minutes). We can just leave it be and put off more decisions until next year when we have more money, we can use it as is because we have about 900 gallons of water storage, or we can frack it (hydro-frack, hydrofracking, hydraulic fracturing) Decisions, decisions.....but we did make a decision so be sure to check out that video here: • FRACKING OUR WELL - A ...
    A big thank you to Ron, Paul, and Victor of Sterling Well Drilling. We appreciate all your hard work!

    My family farm in Oregon has the best water in the area, 200ft deep and unlimited water. Over the years land around us have been bought up turned into Vineyards, with barely any water. In fact, I watch daily trips with a giant clear water tank trucked up to them.
    Dad always said our well was the most valuable asset on the farm.
    ....and likely why my parents lived into thier 90's. RIP
    btw, I recently bought a $5k bison deep well hand pump.
    ...for the end of Times. Sadly 😥

      Yes, water is the absolute most important aspect of any homestead. Glad you guys are good. Sounds like they had a nice long life.

    Why would you use 100 gallons per person? We have 5 people and barely use 30 gallons

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  2 роки тому

      Wow! Thats amazing that 5 of you are able to use so little! The average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons per day. That does not necessarily mean that is what we will use, but when you add in animals, gardens, etc. it can add up pretty quickly. You can check out this link at USGS: www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/water-qa-how-much-water-do-i-use-home-each-day

    You will be ok if you got good static water level

    Thank you so much for making a posting these videos. My wife and I bought our dream property in the north Georgia mountains last November. For now, we are putting in two RV sites for us and our family to visit. We are having tough luck with our well at the moment. They went to 600 feet and like you, we have a half a gallon per minute flow rate. The disappointment was difficult to describe but I know you all understand. We have decided to hydro-frack it. Seeing your videos is so helpful. May I ask, is your flow rate still good? Any issues we should consider? We are going through the same decision process you guys already endured and like you, our budget is shot to heck over this whole thing. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

      Man I really feel for you. Our well is absolutely still flowing, and it’s doing pretty good. We are planning on putting a well pump in the spring because we’re starting our build. I really hope the fracking works for you, it was a really tough decision for us to make. For us it worked out OK please let us know how it turns out for you. And, It was good to have a deep well because we have a lot of water storage in the pipe. That’s an advantage even with a slow flow rate. Our well pump is going to go down approximately 400 feet. So that’s just something to think about with the low flow rate. Good luck

    it is always something on the homestead ... is a saying we are always saying to each other to keep from crying sometimes! we understand the disappointment. our natural spring has gone dry for the second summer. this week however we have received 2.5" inches of rain with more in the forecast!

      Take all the rain you can get for now! It has been very dry so I hope for the best for you, but not too much at once😮

      @@HiddenValleyHomestead We have a playlist of all the water on the homestead. We did frack and it worked out ok, better than we expected anyway, but then we were blessed with somewhat of a surprise this winter that we hope stays true - it's now artesian! It was a drought when we drilled it (which could explain all the problems) but now it is literally overflowing so we are hoping that stays true because we have some plans for the overflow! Thanks so much for watching all our videos. We are going to catch up on yours tonight!

    Our pump house (many of our neighbors just have the system sitting out on their land - it does not need to be in a structure at all) - has the pressure tank, the water softener, an additional filter (looks like a large SCUBA tank), and all of this sits a bit from our house... it works great!

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  6 років тому

      Ray Hayden interesting. i was under the impression that everything would move from the pump house into our house once it’s built. Never thought about leaving it out there.

    Hey Guys! We've watched a bunch of your vid's now. We have a solution to your water situation. Our situation is we have a spring, and a cistern. The problem... abundant flow but NOT enough water catchment (i.e. a cistern), or galvanized water tanks to hold the flow. You can calculate your monthly or quarterly needs in terms of # of animals, and your own use. Our estimate with 2 Geese, 10 chickens, 3 turkeys, 10 dogs (6 Papillions, 3 Australian Shepherds, and 1 Shitsu). They use about 50 gallons each day. We Kelly, me and her Mom -- use about 40 gallons each day. As we are still in the RV for now using a foot flush toilet, I'm not filling a toilet tank each time we go pee or poo. So based on these numbers about 90 Gallons x 30 days, 2700 gallons monthly. If you have 1/2 a gallon per minute, you can in essence achieve your goals easily. The calculation is: 60 minutes in an hour x 24 hours = 1440 minutes daily x 1/2 Gallon = 720 Gallons each day. In 1 month you'd yield a maximum of 21,600 Gallons with your pump running continually over that month. My suggestion is to use a smaller capacity pump that the flow is LESS like 1/2 Gallon per minute OR less, and one that can pump up 700' of head. Possibly a smart pump that knows if there is NO water in the pump it stops until the water level has -- refilled itself. You pump that water into cisterns either concrete (in ground 1-2K gallons each) OR Get a 10-20K Gallon Metal cistern above ground. You can do a DIY Cistern for not very much ($600) for a 5' Diameter x 8' Tall Culvert and create your own 1100 Gallon cistern -- and add these on as time goes by. Here is a video on that: ua-cam.com/video/3zwDkASpqTk/v-deo.html So you use your well to fill above or underground tanks, then you use a $200 pump 220v from your cisterns to pressurize your pressure tanks, and then feed your house like we do. If you want more info on how we did our water system. We started by developing our spring you can see that video here . offgridhomesteading.seodle.com/2016/07/developed-spring-flowing-with-fresh-spring-water-after-clean-up/ But the principle is the same. Your SOURCE is the well, our SOURCE was the hillside. It all leads to tanks that can then be pumped up to the homestead and made useable. offgridhomesteading.seodle.com/2016/08/off-grid-solar-panel-build-12v-water-pumping-solution-without-batteries/ I hope that helps. If you'd like to talk with us more about this, message us on facebook.com/offgridhomesteading (I dont post our phone in public forums).

      Hey there! For some reason this message was spammed and I only just learned about checking my spam folder. Ugh...so I am sorry that I did not respond sooner! Your suggestion was great. We did consider that option and it would work fine probably but we really have no way of knowing exactly how many animals we will have or how many people will end up living with or around us sharing the system so we really wanted to make sure we had more than enough. We still plan on doing the cistern but for rain water catchment near the greenhouse and animals. We are also considering a way to create a pond somewhere downstream - we have a small somewhat seasonal creek - but that will be in the future. Thank you so much again for your help! You are very knowledgeable and we appreciate your taking the time to share it all :-)

      Absolutely! I’m glad your flow has increased from the fracking. Very Informative video, My knowledge of Fracking was only of HydroFracking using the chemicals and I’m glad they were able to do it just with water that’s awesome and if you’d like to reach out directly you can go to our Facebook page facebook.com/offgridhomesteading and we can share our phone number and contact information on a private message there if you like.
