Exactly. Pretty dangerous could be because the co2 you pass out and drown. Simply get a slice of paper light it and drop in and ofcourse you never go alone.
It's lack of oxygen, not abundance of co2 that kill you in confined spaces, because rust, bacteria and microorganisms already consumed it. Co2 poisoning is quite a rare thing, plus you will notice it right away, but you cant sense lack of oxygen in the air. You are probably thinking about carbon monoxide, which has nothing to do wtih thing case.

I have been thinking that I would love to come and help but I want to catch up to current videos first to see where he needs help. From where I am now in the series it looks like he needs serious help in work safety. He needs chainsaw chaps so he won’t loose a leg or a foot if the saw slips. The funny thing is, the smoking above an open vat of gasoline is perfectly safe. You can put out a cigarette in gasoline repeatedly and consistently without any effort. You cannot get gasoline fumes to light with a cigarette; it is the cigarette lighter that is dangerous. The really dangerous safety violation was entering an enclosed space without any safety precautions on a shitty rickety ladder without any possibility of anyone helping him if he collapses. This was Russian roulette levels of stupid. If there's no oxygen in there because it was consumed and it was not ventilated properly; you don't feel a danger and you don't feel out of breath. You just suddenly feel woozy and collapse. If someone goes in to help you, they will die too and on that shitty ladder there's no way they can help you or drag you out of there. Your body doesn't feel low O2, it feels high CO2, that's why hyperventilating before keeping your breath for as long as possible is dangerous; you can suddenly pass out before you can surface for air because you purged the CO2 but still ran out of O2.
So, your going to need to buy that little section of land that the well is on from your neighbour and get the new property lines registered with the relevant authorities. Soon. Your neighbour is more than happy to let you invest a bunch of money into fixing up his old well. He might even be fine with you using it for the next few decades. But the nice neighbour wont own that land forever and you don't know what the next owner will do. Thats ignoring the possibility of the neighbour changing his mind at any time after you finish building all the relevant infrastructure needed to make full use of that well and then just seizing everything you installed and denying you access. Afterall, it is his well and it is on his land, so anything you install in it to pump out water he could commandeer with little legal trouble. Water security is an extremely important thing and leaving it up to the whips of future land owners is risky business. At the very least you should discuss the possibility.

Having a gentleman's agreement and being neighbourly is all fine and dandy, but it won't hold up in court. So it's better to have something agreed to and documented with the authority. This is especially true for land usage. I had a friend who bought a bit of land to build a cabin on that did not have access to the county roads, he needed to go through a neighbour's land in order to access his own land. Which was fine because the neighbour was good with it. But then the neighbour died and the new owners didn't want him passing through their land and they blocked access as is their legal right. It cost him a lot of time, money and suffering to get that sorted out and a new road built on a piece of land bought from another neighbour along the dividing line. Having the legal rights to access and make use of land is a really big deal and if you don't understand this then you need to shut up and stop passing around dangerous advice.

That small entrance you found in the bottom of the well might be an old water mine (yes those are a thing in portugal ) that was caped off when they built that new well. It basically means that previouse to the construction of that well there was a mine conected to that spring that stored the water in a horizontal way rather than vertically (like a normal well) and it would be accessed in a lower point of the land. These water mines can have hundreds of meters in length and can pass through various pieces of land until they reach the point of access.

It's already been said but I want to repeat because it may save a life - enclosed spaces are very dangerous. You must always ventilate them first. Have someone who is able to properly assist you and is aware of the basic dangers of enclosed spaces. If someone collapses in an enclosed space NEVER follow them in - you will die too. Use the rescue line or SCBA to rescue. 1 - Ventilate Space (continuously if possible) 2 - Make sure others aware of danger - do not follow you in if you collapse unexpectedly 3 - Use rescue line to pull casualties to safety. If this is not avail do not enter, await for rescue services. 4 - Ensure rescue services are aware of potential gas hazard - many rescues have gone wrong when people entered unaware of the risk. Stay safe - watch the many good training videos on youtube of enclose spaces training.
Hi brother,do not enter in well alone, because some time ground gases may be gather in well &it may be causing lack of oxygen or positiones gases. also use additional roap with safety belt for additional security.
This well was open for quite a while before he entered it , so bad gasses are long gone. falling in that well is like falling in the water , only a bit deeper. If you want to eliminate all risks, stay at home and wait till you re dead.
You best remove some dirt around the opening/top so no rainwater, or other water can come in from the top, that will pollute your well. Je moet de bovenkant rondom uitgraven zodat de deksel en put rand hoger ligt als de omgeving. Oppervlaktewater mag niet in de put komen, bij bijvoorbeel veel regenval enzo. Verder goed bezig !! The brickwork is usually extended well above the ground level for this reason. Is suspect this well was intentionally reduced in height when it was capped.
it isnt just up it is down as well... I don't know how deep bedrock is where they are but if you arent down into the bedrock surface ground water can 100% penetrate in to that well. I highly recommend getting water tests
You should never enter a confined space like this without measuring the oxygen level first. The min. safe oxygen level is 19.5%. An alternative might be to blow fresh air to just above the water level by using a large diameter flexible hose attached to a fan at ground level. Many people and rescuers have died in confined spaces.
On Sundays I watch "ghost town living" and on Mondays I watch Project Kamp. This episode had some ghost town living vibes with the gopro and the cave exploration.
Project camp : The feed pipe indicates a spring at the other end which means using a locator beacon on a fish tape and a transceiver above the ground will help you to locate the spring ...an old well like this typically has a spring that needs cleaned and maintained at a remote location and the well you have discovered holds the volume a household needs...it was easier to build the water tank closer to the lane and the spring water is piped in to it....
I think you are incorrect there. The pipe shows no running water but the Well definitely fills up from the bottom. Also at the bottom you can see the spring-head (rock face) in a specially built archway. Historically as mentioned in other comments, this spring-head was accessed by a water mine (tunnel) which can be seen in an earlier video. It is located further down the hill. The pipe we see here is more likely a partially blocked overflow in this 'new' Well 👍

From previous experience, to protect from snakes or other similar getting into the well, use some type of seal around the perimeter before reinstalling the lid.

You dont want to fall down into the well. Because initially you can swim, but when you get tired, you will drown in the well. I have seen that happen several times in India. Wells are handy, but they are also really dangerous. You be ware! Greetings, Jeff
That was rather scary to watch in general. I liked how he was talking about going down when a brick was ready to fall down there, luckily he waited and moved it back to a safer spot.
That's not the scary part. Someone could have chucked down a ladder (they were filming after all). The really scary part is enclosed spaces. If the level of oxygen is too low, you don't feel it; there's no warning; everything is just normal until it is not and you feel a bit woozy before you pass out. There's no way to help you with that shitty ladder if there's no rope tied around you to pull you out.
I'm shocked at the lit cigarette over the pouring gasoline! Shocked! I'd have told those people to pack up and leave immediately! That's totally insane!, and you're all lucky the whole place didn't go up in flames, with the smoking guy (especially) sent to the emergency room's burn unit, only to die in day one.
Is there a gap in the side wall to slide a pipe in? If you can slide it to the middle and then via the hatch mount your down tube and pump assembly with a hose clamp so you can disconnect it in the future and make sure you leave enough length in the pipe to slide it out without it dropping.

We have granite, mimosas, brumbles and brooms in the South of the Serra da Gardunha. And I have to tell you something: That guy with the digger, if you wanna get rid of the mimosas, you have to call him. Digging out the roots is the only way to prevent that they are not coming back.
It is. That is the sediment that fills over the years, its just what the watter brings. For wells its not a typically a problem as long as the intake valve is way above it so it would not collect any if it. For drinking wells its good to clean it every 10 or so years. Those guys should store or use it directly in the garden because its high neutriant stuff.

I own a house in Portugal. Western Algarve near Lagos. When my Dad first bought the place the 2 huge old wells had about 15m of water in them - now they are down to about 1.5m or 5ft deep. They will become unusable soon. The water table has been depleted so much by avocado farmers and golf courses. One of the wells has what looks like a cave coming in from the side as well. Is there anyone in Portugal who still digs these wells out? I think the base of the wells is solid rock.I was told nobody does that any more. Would be such a shame to go to mains water.
i was wondering about liability insurance. A few safety rules being broken for sure. As the land owner you also have responsibilities to the people doing work for you. You need to be aware of this. I am sure no one wants anyone to come to harm. I have done a lot of work with contractors, and know how slip-shod they can be. I would not have allowed them to have alcohol on site, and I would have insisted on hard hats and safety lines. The well shaft itself looks to be badly lined.

True, but there was one wearing hi viz (like what's the point? Will it keep your shirt clean?) The smoking whilst filling up the generator in the middle of mimosa also had my toes curl. I guess fumes don't linger around long in open air but still. There must be reasons why you're not allowed to smoke at a gas station. Makes me wonder, these guys, were they of an official company or just friends of the neighbours helping out? I see that in NL too: if it's informal agricultural action, the H&S guidelines are often let loose. And it's all fun and games until something happens. Then everyone pays strict attention for a while until they return to the informal happy go lucky state of mind. (drinking lots of beer to celibrate that the first cut is packed and loaded and driving a few kilometers back to the farm with at least 15 people from down the road on top of the trailer loaded with hay (must be at least 4 meters high) and a few people in and on the tractor. Good fun but quite dangerous when you think of it.
@@Roosmarijn035 I' am/was a civil engineer. first thing.. the smoking and gasoline... not very dangerous 1 in a million like chances of going wrong, you actually have to make gasoline in to aerosol in order to be in substantial danger, all the dry straw around them was more dangerous than the gasoline itself. but yeah dont do it just because it normally its ok is not good enough. The vest, its mandatory in all constructions sites some of the guys have gotten so used to them that they use them in any work situation.. (helmets they take them off the moment you are not looking) they become quite uncomfortable specially in the sun. Now in this specific situation a lot more safety gear would be needed A LOT more. first thing for any of the guys going down a harness and a life line would be mandatory, also when the well was emptied the walls should have been contravened to prevent possible collapse, and obviously the helmets and gloves. ironically enough out of all of the dangers they put themselves at the cigarette on the gasoline was probably the smaller of them all
Makes me curious as to how old that well is. I can see that it was hand dug and shored up with red brick and mortar. My best guess is about 75 years or older.
In later videos they uncover an underground water cistern beneath the large shed ruin. It is dry but it has a similar looking pipe at the top. Perhaps water used to go to there but is now blocked, so it just seeps into the land & back into the original water-mine, which he shows briefly in an earlier video downhill in the undergrowth.

You should raise the wall of the well above grade by a foot or two to prevent runoff from contaminating your water

Project camp : The feed pipe indicates a spring at the other end which means using a locator beacon on a fish tape and a transceiver above the ground will help you to locate the spring ...an old well like this typically has a spring that needs cleaned and maintained at a remote location and the well you have discovered holds the volume a household needs...it was easier to build the water tank closer to the lane and the spring water is piped in to it....
I think you are incorrect there. The pipe shows no running water but the Well definitely fills up from the bottom.
Also at the bottom you can see the spring-head (rock face) in a specially built archway.
Historically as mentioned in other comments, this spring-head was accessed by a water mine (tunnel) which can be seen in an earlier video. It is located further down the hill.
The pipe we see here is more likely a partially blocked overflow in this 'new' Well 👍
That POV from the well cleaner started out as my POV on a Saturday night. Some beers laying around, friend standing in front of me smoking a cigarette. haha

Look like that well was dug to chase a spring and when they found it's rock face they built up. That small cave is likely the springs spill point.

Confined space entry and working under a suspended load are the first two that made me wince. If planning for the unexpected is considered bullish!t in Portugal, I think I would skip working there.

There's a lot of countries and I can tell you that my country is not content with negligence and worker deaths/injuries. We had 29 work related deaths in 2019 with 5.3 million inhabitants. That's about 1820 deaths if our population was as big as America's.
During my years as industrial worker and constructor, I have learned that safety is #1 and I glad you have it in mind...

From previous experience, to protect from snakes or other similar getting into the well, use some type of seal around the perimeter before reinstalling the lid.

You dont want to fall down into the well. Because initially you can swim, but when you get tired, you will drown in the well. I have seen that happen several times in India. Wells are handy, but they are also really dangerous. You be ware!

That was rather scary to watch in general. I liked how he was talking about going down when a brick was ready to fall down there, luckily he waited and moved it back to a safer spot.
That's not the scary part. Someone could have chucked down a ladder (they were filming after all). The really scary part is enclosed spaces. If the level of oxygen is too low, you don't feel it; there's no warning; everything is just normal until it is not and you feel a bit woozy before you pass out. There's no way to help you with that shitty ladder if there's no rope tied around you to pull you out.
I'm shocked at the lit cigarette over the pouring gasoline! Shocked! I'd have told those people to pack up and leave immediately! That's totally insane!, and you're all lucky the whole place didn't go up in flames, with the smoking guy (especially) sent to the emergency room's burn unit, only to die in day one.
Neighbor probably wondering why they want to use that old septic tank as a well. lol

Is there a gap in the side wall to slide a pipe in? If you can slide it to the middle and then via the hatch mount your down tube and pump assembly with a hose clamp so you can disconnect it in the future and make sure you leave enough length in the pipe to slide it out without it dropping.

BTW: So you have granite, mimosas and brumbles. Mhmm..., so I guess your land is located in the Centro, maybe Beira Beixa? We have granite, mimosas, brumbles and brooms in the South of the Serra da Gardunha. And I have to tell you something: That guy with the digger, if you wanna get rid of the mimosas, you have to call him. Digging out the roots is the only way to prevent that they are not coming back.

It is. That is the sediment that fills over the years, its just what the watter brings. For wells its not a typically a problem as long as the intake valve is way above it so it would not collect any if it. For drinking wells its good to clean it every 10 or so years. Those guys should store or use it directly in the garden because its high neutriant stuff.

I own a house in Portugal. Western Algarve near Lagos. When my Dad first bought the place the 2 huge old wells had about 15m of water in them - now they are down to about 1.5m or 5ft deep. They will become unusable soon. The water table has been depleted so much by avocado farmers and golf courses. One of the wells has what looks like a cave coming in from the side as well.
Is there anyone in Portugal who still digs these wells out? I think the base of the wells is solid rock.I was told nobody does that any more. Would be such a shame to go to mains water.
i was wondering about liability insurance. A few safety rules being broken for sure. As the land owner you also have responsibilities to the people doing work for you. You need to be aware of this. I am sure no one wants anyone to come to harm. I have done a lot of work with contractors, and know how slip-shod they can be. I would not have allowed them to have alcohol on site, and I would have insisted on hard hats and safety lines. The well shaft itself looks to be badly lined.
ufurtunatly that sort of crew would cost a fair bit more of money, but yes you are absolutely right. Thankfully everything worked out ok. like 99% of the times.. problem is that 1%
True, but there was one wearing hi viz (like what's the point? Will it keep your shirt clean?) The smoking whilst filling up the generator in the middle of mimosa also had my toes curl. I guess fumes don't linger around long in open air but still. There must be reasons why you're not allowed to smoke at a gas station. Makes me wonder, these guys, were they of an official company or just friends of the neighbours helping out? I see that in NL too: if it's informal agricultural action, the H&S guidelines are often let loose. And it's all fun and games until something happens. Then everyone pays strict attention for a while until they return to the informal happy go lucky state of mind. (drinking lots of beer to celibrate that the first cut is packed and loaded and driving a few kilometers back to the farm with at least 15 people from down the road on top of the trailer loaded with hay (must be at least 4 meters high) and a few people in and on the tractor. Good fun but quite dangerous when you think of it.

first thing.. the smoking and gasoline... not very dangerous 1 in a million like chances of going wrong, you actually have to make gasoline in to aerosol in order to be in substantial danger, all the dry straw around them was more dangerous than the gasoline itself. but yeah dont do it just because it normally its ok is not good enough.
The vest, its mandatory in all constructions sites some of the guys have gotten so used to them that they use them in any work situation.. (helmets they take them off the moment you are not looking) they become quite uncomfortable specially in the sun.
Now in this specific situation a lot more safety gear would be needed A LOT more.
first thing for any of the guys going down a harness and a life line would be mandatory, also when the well was emptied the walls should have been contravened to prevent possible collapse, and obviously the helmets and gloves.
ironically enough out of all of the dangers they put themselves at the cigarette on the gasoline was probably the smaller of them all

Makes me curious as to how old that well is. I can see that it was hand dug and shored up with red brick and mortar. My best guess is about 75 years or older.

I would guess its simply going into the earth and delivers water for the surrounding

Likely not an overflow but a pipe coming from a "water mine" as one would say in Portugal, feeding additional water to the well.
@@VascoHenr ... might have been a pipe from ground drain or roof gutters in years past. A hole in the ground is a good place to store excess water.
In later videos they uncover an underground water cistern beneath the large shed ruin. It is dry but it has a similar looking pipe at the top.
Perhaps water used to go to there but is now blocked, so it just seeps into the land & back into the original water-mine, which he shows briefly in an earlier video downhill in the undergrowth.

Would not wait some days for the 'dirt to sink down'. Last time we build a well we had a pump running for a day, to suck as much as possible dirt out.
