Welcome back! The tutorial starts at 2:27
I FOUND A WAY!
If you’re watching this video because you’re like me and run a PC and also have an iMac available to you and wondered if you can use it as a second monitor…. Well you’re in luck!
I as you all know use a Windows 10 PC for all my gaming, editing and streaming and my GF uses the 2017 5k iMac for all of the work she does. She’s able to use my 4K display by simply plugging in the required Thunderbolt cable from the iMac to the PC but I unfortunately cannot do the same from my PC to her iMac.
Apple stopped supporting the idea of using an iMac as a display from 2015 onwards on all iMacs. A real shame.
Link to article: support.apple.com/en-au/HT204592
So, after a lot of research and mucking around I found a solution.
Step 1: Install Windows 10 on the iMac using Bootcamp and get a Windows 10 Home or Pro licence to activate the OS.
Step 2: Make sure your Windows 10 PC and the iMac are on the same network. Ethernet or Wifi...doesn’t really matter.
Step 3: On the iMac in Windows 10 goto - Settings - System - Projecting to this PC and configure the settings as needed.
Step 4: On the PC goto Action Centre in the bottom right corner of your desktop.
Step 5: Click Project
Step 6: Click Connect To A Wireless Display and then select the iMac which should appear.
Step 7: Wait a few seconds for the display to get configured and then all you need to do is adjust the resolution of the iMac for scaling reasons.
You can follow along as I show you the settings in the video but your mileage may vary.
---------------
So as you know this isn’t necessarily the best option for video quality but it’s technically a free solution which is already built in to Windows 10 and Apple technically doesn’t offer an alternative.
Thanks for watching as always and if you have any questions about my setup or if you have any issues than please let me know!
See you in the next video! Cheers!

Nice video. You should rename the video How to Use a 5k iMac running Windows 10 Bootcamp as a second monitor . I was expecting to use the iMac as a second monitor without running bootcamp . Thanks
Thank you so much for this comment. I noticed the views and like ratio, and since UA-cam got rid of dislikes, I can't tell from my phone.
Thanks for letting us know yeah I think everyone already knows about bootcamp but what we need to know isn’t in this video
Exactly
same.. I was like wait what?! Clicked right off.. not helpful . But he got a view and these comments. Hopefully change the title.
@@sunny19886 Have you figured it out since lol, since this comment was a year ago
This is great...after getting my iMac to run on Windows 10 your instruction worked perfectly. I only had a stability problem when my Mac was connected to a WiFi extender but once directly connected it works perfectly. You saved my home office experience!
Life saver, saved me a lot of money with docking station, cables. This works great
This works flawlessly for my late 2013 27" iMac for which Apple doesn't support the target diaplay function. Thank you so much!🙏
I have no clue you could do this, really helpful...I found my old windows 10 tablet and that is now my third monitor. Very helpful, thank you!
Followed this tutorial and it works superbly.
The only step that seemed to be missing was when I needed to install the wireless display function through the windows settings.
When i tried to connect my iMac Pro with windows intalled i receive the following message: this tool does not support Miracat reception. Can you help me?
Oh duh, I didn't even consider this. Great idea! Not the target display mode I was hoping for, but this will save me a couple hundred dollars. Thank you!!!
@@SocialHardware It ended up costing me £1300 because I foolishly bought a new iMAC off the back of this video. It would have been the perfect set-up for me if it had worked. Miracast not supported on my 2019 iMAC and none of the usual fixes work.
@@bigynboy same issue
@@bigynboy same thing did you find a solution
@@friendlytester6861 Unfortunately no - or at least not a cost effective one. I ended up getting a Mac Mini and monitor (that I could also connect my work laptop too.
Worked as instructed. I updated my iMac 2011 to Windows 10 and then used this method. Works a dream and adds a great extended screen to my work and personal laptops!
How to update iMac to windows??
Do both PCs need to be running the same Windows? My desktop pc windows 11 does not detect the imac bootcamp Windows 10
Does It work with imac 27 2019? Because in my case there is no "Projecting to this PC" option in windows 10 system settings(
What is the best resolution for it? my iMac unable to expand window to full screen.
Just wanted to say thank you. All working here. I found that when I renamed my bootcamp PC I had to restart the bootcamp before it would allow me to connect, even though it was showing the bootcamp PC on the old name.
I have a 2019 5k retina 27" I have loaded windows 11 in BootCamp but unable to get this to work? Any thoughts ? Thanks
Hello,i have imac 2011 ("27), but i can't connect with my windows laptop (asus rog strix). I used a wire mini display port to mini display port. Please help me🙏
So I have a gaming pc and I have a Mac book pro. I wanted to Connect my pc to Mac book pro so I can have dual monitors for only running on windows. Is it possible I have to use any type of connectors or Adapter to have dual monitor setup?
Under "Projecting to this PC", all the functions are greyed out, perhaps due to lack of Miracast support by iMac. Any solution?
Hi have followed the tutorial and put Windows 10 on however the options when I get to the Projecting to your PC are all greyed out and I cannot chose any options - any ideas?
Hi there, I’ve gone through all of the steps, and when trying to connect I get a blue screen with the same warning about the hardware not designed for wireless projection. It fails to bring up the pc screen. This happens for both wireless and ethernet connected. Any further suggestions? Thanks very much
hi

does my Imac still use it's own memory when I do that or will it rely on the main computer?
Hello Bro!
please show what HDMI cable to used and how to connect? Because my Imac have only USB type-C

So I tried this with my 2020 iMac and still coming into the same issue "This device doesn't support receiving Miracast, so you can't project to it wirelessly." I attempted to install wireless display but still nothing. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hello, I have a problem in the agency, I should connect a windows pc all'imac 21" 2017late (with win 10 bootcamp) you can use both? Does it take a particular switch or cable? At the center apple I have proposed a usb/vga but it seems unlikely. Thanks in advance
I have a laptop running windows 11, will it still connect as I note the Bootcamp only allows Windows 10?
Do you have to activate windows 10 pro/home before the display detection will work?
hey i hope you read this, but can this work if i have a macbook running bootcamp? i want to connect my imac to my mac that is already running windows but the thunderbolt cables dont support and this seems to maybe being my only solution? please help.. thank you.
Great! Thank you. I have a question. Could you connect a MacBook Pro using this method? I'm assuming the problem lies with the OS on the iMac and therefore once Windows is installed it will accept being used as a display screen.
the problem I encounter is that my device never shows up in the pc I have done it before but for some reason now it never shows up in the connections is there a way to fix this ?
I habe a pc and i use a iMac from 2010 as a monitor but i always habe to unplug and plug in the connector for ut to work as a PC monitor is there any way to go around that problem
Will you be able to use mouse and keyboard that is connected to the iMac?
Hi, I have a iMac 21,5 Late 2015 and I want to use it as a monitor. Is this the only way or it's supported by the cable method? Thanks.
Using this method is it posisble to create a script that start at the startup that execute this automatically?
Do you know which version of Windows 10 was used for this? I can't get it to work with Win10 20H2
HI, I was wondering if this would be possible using a small Mac Book Air as the extra screen. What about if I use a Mini thunderbolt cable between the PC and Mac Book Air? It will be possible to configure it that way?
Hi there, so my wife is working from home so we set up windows 10 on her 5K iMac and tried to project but for some reason her work PC wouldn’t connect??

Hi, I tried to follow all the steps showed in the Video but on the windows in my iMac it throws me a error message saying "This device doesn't support receiving Miracast, so you can't project to it wirelessly".
Can you please help me resolving this issue that I am facing ?
Is it possible to use the IMAC as the primary monitor if you don’t have another monitor?
So, is your iMac connected to the PC tower as well via hdmi or display port? or is it receiving the information from the pc via the network? in the latter case, wouldn't you get video lag if you are playing a game?
Do need an activated licens? I´ve set this up to boot my win10 on imac with an external ssd. everything seems to work fine, but whatever I do I can´t seem to identify the imac searching for a computer to project to. My TV however shows, but no computers 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks dude after 2 months of searching and finally found it. Thanks again 😊
i dont understand man i dont have a thunderbolt or whatever its called do i need it or does it work without it cus i put in the dvi and usb but the screen gets black and my main one too really need help man
Can’t believe this works as well as it does! Using an old MacBook Pro 2013 for my monitor wirelessly via 5g so can essentially use it most places in the house. Latency isn’t good enough for gaming really but can play videos & photoshop etc with no issues. There’s an option for enabling keyboard & mouse support so can use my trackpad too!!
This program works with window 11? there is any video to get helped with that?
Hi, thanks for the video and great explanation. Mine is iMac 4k 2017 model, i did everything as you explained in this video...however i cant still see my iMac on my PC to connect as wireless display. What could be the reason? thanks for your help.
mate I should have seen this at the start of COVID. You're a space saver!
I am getting this message on my iMac (late 2015) "this device does not support receiving miracast, so you can project to it wirelessly" i have also plugged this in as well with no luck. can you use parallels?
Hi, my iMac 5k 2019 does not support miracast. Do you know why is it not working?
Question- I have a Dell (windows) laptop from work and a new iMac is there a way I can just mirror the dell to my iMac or do I HAVE to download the Microsoft program on my iMac in order to do it? Please answer I’m working from home and this would work incredibly great.
I am having an all-in-one window 10 desktop and a 2013 Macbook pro, I am wondering if it is possible to make a dual monitor for these two?
hi , if pc is home network with imac but aditionaly connected to company vpn , then it will work ?
Can I use the iMac as the main screen for my Flight Sim or just as a secondary monitor.
Hi thanks for the video, is it possible send the screen on the Imac through the ethernet cable for example instead of wifi?
great idea considering that the price of 5K monitor is only slightly cheaper than the price of an iMac 5K 27!
Cool! Thanks for figuring it out and sharing with us! :)
Hello, do you need to activate /purchase a windows key in order to use this option ?
nice video and thanks for sharing your solution with us. im just wonderinf if its possible to connet windows and mac machine for display mirroring without installing windows on mac ? what i want to do is basicly send display informations from my macbook to my windows notebook. The reason for that is because i want to use my HP Envy 360 wich has (inbuild touch and pen ability) as a external Graphic Pen Display. is there a way to do that in your opinion?
I installed windows on my iMac but then it dosnt stop loading I got a new internet and it’s the same:( I have a pc that I just got and wanted to use the iMac as a second display any help with the issue?
Can this be done with a Macbook Pro Late 2013 version? I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work but I would love to make sure before creating a bootcamp.
can i use the imac as a second monitor with windows 10 but connected directly from the PC's GPU?
Will making my imac switch to windows delete all my current docs, pictures, etc?
I have an iMac and I'm just building a custom PC for gaming and streaming. Budget quite tight. You recon there's anyway to use the iMac as a monitor for it to save buying one? It's one of the thin iMac's too.
Hi Im quite desperate for help, so any help would be so appreciated! I need a screen for my pc since my screen just broke. The only availabe screen working is my Imac. Can i someone use the Imac as my main screen for the pc and not as a second screen? Ive tried using a hdmi and an adapter to connect the screen and pc, although the imac still reacts as an imac and not a screen, what do i do?
Really nice video. Please I need HELP. I have Windows 10 pro installed on a 2016 Imac, I'm trying to connect an audio device to the thunderbolt port but nothing is showing up
Hi, currently have a 2013 iMac 27" (on my left) and a 2015 iMac 5K 27" (straight ahead). I often 'connect' the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. My new job will force me to have a 'locked down' windows laptop (13" or 15") - likely to be placed on the right side of my desk.
1). I really want to be able to connect this 'locked down' windows laptop to my 5K iMac. Allowing me to switch between remote working and personal / home use.
2). And still be able to use the 2013 iMac in TDM to use both screens together. Being able to use speakers, webcam, mac wireless keyboard and mac trackpad. If that is not possible.
3). Could I replace the 2013 iMac with a Apple Studio Display (straight ahead) and still be able to connect both the iMac 5K (moved to the left) and this 'locked down' windows laptop to the Apple Studio Display.
Any help would be really useful.
Great video and guidance. How did you get it to work over ethernet? I'm able to successfully project my PC laptop to my Windows 10 enabled late 2012 iMac but ONLY using my wireless network, NOT the same network over ethernet. The wireless display (2012 iMac) does not appear in my list of available displays when connected via ethernet. The projection over wireless is fine but quite laggy and I'd like to improve, plus be able to continue to use ethernet for PC laptop in general.
That’s awesome. Thank you. If I’m only using it as a monitor what’s the min space I should allocated for the windows 10?
Hello! Is it possible to use iMac as a second monitor by connecting it through wifi?
My iMac unfortunately is a late 2014 Retina and it seems like these do not allow this sort of use.
Hi, so it is also possible to do it with Parallel Desktop ?
Thanks for this video! How is the video quality? Is it just like a stream? I have an aging 5k imac and I'd love to use it's display for photo editing on my more power pc.
I have a late 2012 mac how do i connect it to my pc
Can this be done with a Windows operated laptop? I don't want to take up a lot of my working memory from my iMac and would like to leverage my iMac for working on larger documents (drag and drop), webcam and speakers etc.
How do i connect an apple monitor to my dell laptop, I want to use the apple monitor as a second screen
Thanks so much for this video, really helpful!
I have an old 2007 iMac and a brand new HP Envy. How can I pair?
Great! It's just excellent... However, have you tried playing video games and is the resolution the same and is there any lag or jitter or a drop in FPS?
Nice video. But, which cable did you use to connect them? I don't see that listed anywhere.
Hey, my mac is capped at 30 fps. Any fix?
hi, so it is a must to install Windows 10 in the iMac?
hey there awesome video quick question can you do this using Parallels or do you have to use bootcamp? with the software I'm using I hate to have to close out my safari to open up in bootcamp? smashed the like button
Good video. Is there any specific hardware that connects the two monitors or is it all done via Wi-Fi? It looks like you have a lot of cables connecting the monitors.
Cool workarround, I´m having really annoying lag issues, the iMac is wired directly to the router and the pc on wifi but literally 30 cm away from the router, any tips???
My iMac already runs Win10. My problem is I want to play Xbox one on my Mac BUT iMac does not have the option to be used as monitor or even better:
iMacs don't even have an HDMI port.
Any solutions? Pls help :(
Hi thanks for the video - I have an Apple iMac 21.5″ (2012) and I'm trying to connect it to my PC laptop (Dell) to use as a second screen - the iMac has OS 10.15 installed (I've heard the older OS version would have worked) - is it free to download Windows 10 on iMac with Bootcamp?
Thanks a lot! Your video help me to give a second live to my old Imac. Thanks again!!!
Can this work with 2 Imacs, one 2017 imac 5k working as a second monitor of a 2019 imac 5k (both with bootcamp windows 10)?
Hi. I have a PC laptop and I'm trying to connect my iMac as a second monitor now that I'm working from home but I'm having trouble. Can you help please.
Will this work if you are running windows with Parallels? Or just bootcamp?
i`ve tried this ut my imac late 2019 does not have the miracast support when in bootcamp...
it means you will use via network, so it will have a delay right?
This has worked so thanks - however the colour coming through on the Mac is red. Any ideas on how to sort that out??
Is it smooth like when it is connected thru wires? How's the latency?
will this work if I'm running windows 11 on my pc instead of 10?
