  • The Tongsheng TSDZ2 is a great little motor. For my full review please visit: ebikechoices.c...
I have converted and ridden over a hundred e-bikes using direct drive hub motors, geared hub motors, Bafang mid-drives and more recently Tongsheng TSDZ mid-drives.
I tended to stay away from the Tongsheng due to early reports of reliability issues, but they seem to have improved substantially.
Having ridden the 250w / 500w and 750w variants I prefer the way the TSDZ2 produces pedal assist through its torque sensor. It makes for a very smooth and intuitive ride.
I have ridden quite a few Bosch and Yamaha powered ebikes like the Cube Cross Hybrid, and the Tongsheng motor is closest to the Bosch in terms of general feel and performance (250w version).
I haven't experienced any problems yet, with the 20 or so kits I have installed, but the main weak points still seems to be the blue nylon gear, Torque sensor and sprag clutch.
Thankfully there is a good supply of affordable spare parts, and the motor is fairly easy to work on for the competent DIY ebike enthusiast.
I think if you looking for a fairly affordable mid-drive motor with torque sensor, the Tongsheng TSDZ2 is hard to beat. As long as you are willing to live with any long-term reliability issues that may emerge.

Great video, I would like to install one of these kits, my area is mostly flat with a few small hills. Would you say 250w will be plenty? I am being mindful of keeping everything legal at the same time.

How many kilometers can you drive, on a single charge, on a 10ah battery, on a Tongsheng TSDZ2 motor?

Great info. Do you know whether the biike is still rideable under pedal power if the sprag bearing was to fail?

Great video! Is the chain guard removable? I was thinking of adding this motor to a bicycle that already has a chainguard. Thanks.

Great video, but i still have one question.BBS01B or TSDZ2,both 36v 250w?Cadence sensor or torque sensor? Please tell me your opinion.
As for the problems during driving and breakdowns, which is more reliable.
Thanks in advance and greetings from Serbia.

Have you had any trouble fitting them on mountain bikes? I want to put one on my Schwinn Axum but I'm worried about clearance.

That looks very cool. I've been in two minds between the bbs01 and tsdz2 motors (both 250w models). I tend to lean towards the tsdz2 due to the pedal assist based on torque. How hard is it to replace the torque sensor if that fails? Is 250w enough to give adequate assist?

@@ebikechoices Would a 15% gradient be easier with a 350w or 500w version? I ask as I am in South Wales and I have a load of long steep hills on my journey home... several with some short, very steep inclines.
I see on the various UK forums people buying TSDZ2's with motors bigger than 250w but I thought that they were illegal in the UK. Then I read comments online that the Bosch/Yamaha/Brose motors are 250w nominal but actually go nearer 500w.
I suppose what I am asking, bottom line, is whether a 250w TSDZ2 really has the grunt for steep hills?
I enjoyed your video. It good to get the thoughts of someone who has ridden a variety of these motors. So confusing for those of us new to all of this.
EDIT: Ah, have read your excellent article and seen your comments regarding what size motor you have on your hybrid. Got it.

@@ebikechoices Thanks for replying Bob. I am just across the Channel in Swansea and my hills are very similar to yours. I found a website that someone had made, using google maps, to find the gradient of hills on British roads. I was shocked just how many on my route are in the 15 - 20% range with lots of brief very steeper bits.
I was up till the early hours having a good read of your blog and the associated comments. I really enjoyed it. In the past few weeks I have read quite a few blogs and forums on e-bikes but none were as clearly laid out, or importantly as informative, as yours is. You have a new fan.

Hi Bob, i have just fitted a tsdz2 to my ice adventure trike, i have turned the pedals while the trike is on the stand but the motor does not seem to do anything, i am unable to ride at the moment due to a broken foot, do you think the motor does not cut in because it is not sensing the torque while on the stand?

Great video, My bike shop installed the TSDZ2 about a month ago. One problem I have is that the motor doesn't kick in until I am going 6mph. Is there a way to adjust so it kicks in at 3mph or lower? Would adding more magnets on the rear wheel help ?

Also don't put one foot on the pedal while switching the unit on, cause this will mess with the torque sensor calibration. I don't have a TSDZ2 myself but I read it here www.electricbike.com/tsdz2-750w-mid-drive-torque-sensing/

Hi, I see that you do a lot with this e-assist. Did you ever ad a light system to it with a front and a rear mamp?
I want yo know if it works with the display, or if you need to use a separate button for it.
