Talking about your question: there's no a particular strategy that goes beyond the pure and simple dedication, love for music and constant seek for a better playing even if you are an experienced player! try to focus over small, simple things sqeezing the best out of them... even a complex piece of music can be split apart in many little section from which you can learn an universe of concepts!
