  • These odd stars were placed in Super Mario 64 alongside an intended challenge, but in the end, they are broken and most players skipped them entirely. Why is this the case? These aren't even Mario 64 speedrun skips.

Blast to the lonely mushroom in TTM comes to mind. You're supposed to find a pink bob-omb who is very well hidden, then tip toe your way a narrow passage to get to the cannon and then have one shot at the star or else you're dead. Interesting fact about the mountainside star, they blocked the hidden/secret path in DS remake/port forcing you to take the intended path. The only other star I can think of that had a slightly similar change is the caged star in Whomps Fortress where the design of the cage was changed slightly.
I'll probably update this comment or make a second one with a list of star changes between the original and the remake. Which will show that Nintendo didn't completely know which stars could be cheesed and which ones required you to obtain them legitimately.
I'll let all of you know once I do my research.

    • @GamingReinvented
      @GamingReinvented 3 роки тому +11

Well they did, except there's also a ? block in the level with a Power Flower, and Luigi's ability lets him go right through their wall and get the star early anyway. This plus Luigi's insane jumping abilities basically trivialised the entire level in the DS version anyway.

    • @justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313
      @justsomesimplenuclearbirbs4313 3 роки тому +4

Which means the patch they tried to give can still be ignored if you know what you're doing.
But still, the changes to the DS version not only removed some stars but changed them to something completely different.
Although I didn't think to use Luigi in Tall Tall Mountain for that particular star, I didn't remember where the exclamation box was in that level so I forgot about Luigi's invisibility power. Kinda just did most of Tall Tall Mountain legitimately rather than use an exploit.
And I think my ego is trying to talk, so I'm just going to shut up now.

The Secret of the Haunted Books star in BBH (I think that’s what it’s called) is inaccessible in the DS remake unless you hit the books as intended. They put a semi-invisible wall around that mini balcony in the piano room. I don’t think Luigi can get through it with the invisibility power flower either.

Annoyingly, though, that means that you can't exit the slide after collecting the coins, to the 100 coin star either requires you to manage to collect it on the slide or to use the wing cap to collect a bunch of floating coins.

When I was a kid, I never understood Stand Tall on the 4 Pillars. To get to Eyerock's place, I entered the pyramid the normal way and did either a well timed kick in midair or a ledge grab, I don't remember which, from the top of the structure in the pyramid to get into the hole. Also, I thought Eyerock's star was a Castle Secret Star instead of a Shifting Sand Land star.

IKR? It’s like, it’s not that hard to jump from near the entrance to the pyramid (where you would logically start to go for the Star) to the ledge with the Star without any power-ups, items, or special maneuvers, and there is nothing that tells the player to do so, even subconsciously. In fact, not even the official Nintendo Power Player’s Guide for SM64 ever mentions walking around the pyramid using those ledges as even an option, let alone as the intended method! It just says to jump up the ledges to reach the Star or use a Shell or Wing Cap to get up there.
Oh yeah, I forgot; there’s also a Shell and a Wing Cap _right there by the entrance to the pyramid_ that can both be used to scale the front of the pyramid to reach the Star easily without using any ledges at all! If anything, the game seems to be saying to use _those,_ not the ledges, to reach the Star!
And unlike some broken Stars (like Shocking Arrow-Lifts, Secret of the Haunted Bookshelf, Into the Wild Blue, or Get A Hand), where at least the _name_ indicates the intended way to get them, nothing about “Shining Atop the Pyramid” suggests using those walkways. Why would anyone even realize that you were supposed to do that?

I think in this video, the only one that applies is actually the arrow lifts. For the others, it's much more organic to find the stars the intended way. The first is an open level design and your target is clear, plus you can raise the water level as a central mechanic of the level. You're very likely to get this star without even experiencing the lifts on the first try.
The latter two here assume the player already knows where that star is, and that's the only reason why the player would cheese to get there early. I know when I was a kid I wasn't abusing the air-kick to move Mario backward mid-air, especially when attempting it could've risked falling to my death.
The Pyramid side-entrance is very obvious, visible and accessible compared to popping the top, which is the result of an unintuitive sequence. The first thing you're gonna do when you get inside (from the side entrance) is explore it and climb to the star. You're not hunting for secrets to get in the pyramid early to cheese a star you don't know would be more easily accessible via an unknown puzzle.

    Here's a suggestion - Snowman's Land Star 1 - Snowman's Big Head.
You're supposed to scale the giant snowman and use the penguin to avoid the wind to reach the star, but you can bypass all of this by using the cannon to shoot to the top of the snowman (by aiming for the tree on the top). Now, only problem is that with this being Star 1, the Cannon won't be open yet. But the interesting thing about the Cannon in Snowman's Land is that it is right next to the spot where Mario starts in the course. It would not be unreasonable for a new player realizing that they need to reach the top of the giant snowman top see the Cannon at the beginning of the course and assume that this is the way to get up there. The only difficulty is that you'd need to find the Bob-omb-buddy, who is tucked away inside the Igloo, which a New player might not even locate until Star 6 when you need to enter the Igloo. But if a player were to stumble upon it whilst perhaps looking for Bob-omb-buddy, they may enter for a look and find him. An experienced player who already knows B-O-B's location would have no difficulty in entering the Igloo, talking to him and then going back outside to use the Cannon.
I do find it odd that Snowman's land has this Cannon, but hides the B-O-B from you until Star 6, for which you don't even need him. Makes me wonder why a cannon was even included in this level since it is never actually needed, but it is a handy tool for achieving star 1 instead of using the path you are supposed to take.
I'm not really bothered about whether it is actually any easier or quicker to use the alternative path, but I just find it so interesting that this shortcut to Star 1 exists, when there is seemingly no other use for the Cannon.

Shining atop the pyramid is also a star that can easily obtained by not doing what is intended. Judging by the fact the out side of the pyramid is climbable, they must've wanted you to go all the way around the level, through the tox box quicksand pit, and climb up the pyramid, but you can easily just fly to the star or ride a shell up the side of the pyramid. This star always made me wonder why they made it so easy to obtain.

The first console I ever owned was a DS, so the DS version of this game holds a very special place in my heart.
With that in mind, I never did stand atop the 4 pillars correctly. I would go in the pyramid the normal way and then use Mario’s ballon power up to fly into the boss area. When I learned about the intended way I was amazed. Seeing the pyramid explode long after I had finished the game was mind blowing. I thought the pillars that were being referred to was the hands somehow.
I also never did the cool cool mountain wall jumping star correctly either. I would use luigi’s backflip spin to get up there instead. It was just so much easier and I was usually playing as Luigi anyways.
I remember specifically not being able to long jump past the wet dry world arrow lifts and always found it annoying that it forced me to wait for them to move. Furthermore when you get zapped, you’d be locked in place while the arrow lift kept moving below you, often causing you to fall off.

Blast to the lonely mushroom in Tall Tall Mountain. If you head to the section with the Ukiki and the log there's a fly guy you can bounce off to float straight to the star. A million times easier.

I would argue that the "Wallkicks Will Work" in "Cool Cool Mountain" is a broken star! The intended way to get to that star area is to use the cannon, but even as a 7-year-old playing the game for the very first time, I was able to figure out how to simply jump down the mountain to that area or use a "Spin-Drift" to glide my way down there. Meaning, the intended method of opening the cannon for that star is probably rarely ever used even for beginners.
Granted, in my case in-particular, as a child playing Mario 64 for the first time, I didn't even know how to properly perform a "Wallkick" nor even what that was. I was unaware of that mechanic, so I ended up acquiring all 120 stars without ever wall-jumping. This includes areas like "Coins Amass In A Maze" within the "Rainbow Ride" stage. For that star, I would either use the cannon or carpets to get to the very top of the structure and simply fall down repeatedly from there to grab all the red coins rather than performing a walljump. I can attest that it is possible to acquire all 120 stars in the game without ever wall-kicking since I did so the very first time I played the game. Incidentally, the "Wallkicks Will Work" star, contrary to its name, doesn't require wallkicks nor the cannon to acquire even for noobs.

The baby penguin star in CCM. You’re supposed to walk/slide down the mountain the long way, but instead you can take a pretty easy slide down the side of the mountain straight to the bottom.
CCM also has Wall Kicks Will Work, which can be obtained without any Wall Kicks whatsoever and without using the cannon to blast you over to that area just by falling onto the icy platform from above. Even if you miss the platform with the Star, you’ll have still skipped the cannon.
There’s also one of the volcano Stars in LLL, which you can get by just long jumping from where the other Star is, making the elevators completely and utterly useless.
Speaking of LLL, the log-rolling Star can be obtained sans log just by using the Wing Cap or a Shell.
Then there’s Get a Hand in TTC, which you can reach even while the clock is stopped by just falling from above rather than using the hand.
In WF, there’s Shoot into the Wild Blue. You’re supposed to use the cannon to launch yourself to the pole and slide down to the Star, but a simple Wall Kick will get you there easily.
Finally, in BBH, you’re supposed to go through the library past some books literally flying off the shelves to hit Mario and then solve a puzzle by kicking three books on a shelf in a specific order… but once again, you can just Wall Kick to reach the platform with the Star.

Didn't expect shoot into the wild blue to not be mentioned. When I first played the game I found aiming cannons really hard and what I did was jumped and kicked from the top to the platform that's slightly lower, where the top of the pole is. Obviously took a few tries, but that's how I got that star for the first time ever.

0:40 I was actually watching a streamer play SM64 for the first time the other day and he did this completely by accident, it was hilarious. He had no idea what had just happened lol

Me: even the "broken" stars in M64 are the most fun/genius gameplays in gaming history

Some other examples I can think of...
    - Red hot log rolling in LLL: I don't think I ever atually used the log, itself, since the Wing Cap makes it trivial. Or even without the Wing cap, you can just long jump toward the star, fall in the lava and bounce out.
    - Collect the caps in DDD: the text clearly implies that you're meant to use the vanish and metal cap at the same time which is cool and all, but you don't even need the metal cap at all. Just grab the vanish cap and swim into the cage. Most new players, however, WILL do it the intended way for the simple coolness factor or combining the vanish and metal caps.
    - Into the igloo: Some peple told me that you're supposed to get to the ignoo entrance with the Koopa shell. I never ever did that, always just went halfway up the snowman and jumped there.
    - Not a star, but the first carpet in Rainbow ride is completely and easily skippable by long jumping to the pole that leads up the exact same place.
