- This super nostalgic, delicious and satisfying ingredient is perfect for home or restaurant use. It's one of my favorite things that I grew up eating.
Hot Italian Tempeh Sausage' with pasta hit the spot. I make in big batches and freeze into portions for later.
This is AWESOME! And I'll be working up a couple more dishes to apply it too soon.

The book referenced that i've read is called, Food of Bodhisatvas
THE RECIPE:
HOT Italian TEMPEH / TOFU Sausage crumble
2, 200g Blocks Tempeh
1 450g black EXTRA Super firm TOFU
2 TBS Fennel seeds, ground and pound
2 TBS Oregano
1 TBS Garlic, granulated
1 TBS Onion, granulated
1 teaspoon Red Pepper flakes (for spicy)
3/4 teaspoon White peppercorn, ground and pound
1 teaspoon Smoked Paprika
1 lemon zested (optional)
1 cup Olive oil
½ Cup Red wine (optional)
1 garlic clove, sliced
2 Star Anise, whole
On low heat, heat oil with fresh garlic and star anise, until hot.
Combine rest of the seasonings in a bowl,
Slowly add hot oil and let sit for a minute.
With a fork, whisk in red wine
Marinate 30 mins or overnight
Roast 30 minutes
For best results, cool and then use for recipes.
The longer it sits after roasting the better and more intense the flavor gets.

There are three reasons to go plant-based:
1. Save the animals.
2. Save the planet.
3. Save yourself.
No matter which reason or combination thereof gets people eating more plants, all three are the knock-on benefits. Some channels just don't want the drama in their comments.

And honestly, I am becoming tired of a few certain channels that seem to not care about animals, or at least not show it... it feels their main focus is to sell their products - books, food items, membership, clothing... The strongest message I get from you is that of practicing compassion through veganism - and I very much appreciate it. I think we can all benefit from spending some time paying extra attention to that - no matter where we are in the journey. As you spoke of factory “farming” and it not being allowed to be filmed anymore, you reminded me of the movie “Soylent Green” where they hid the source of food from the public. We’re there now. Not with animal source in the film (I’m trying not to give the plot away), but we’re so close to that point. It’s unthinkable. Yet here we are.

The book Soylent Green is based on, was inspired by the theories of a scientist who is still alive and still trying to defend his theories. Even though he has been proven to have been *overwhelmingly* wrong about the effects of human population growth.
He's an entomologist. But it turns out *human* *beings* *are* *not* *butterflies*
When people point out that his theories were right about butterflies but *astronomically* wrong about people, his defense is "my research was peer reviewed". It's embarrassing to watch. And pathetic. Don't be like him.
If you *genuinely* think we're anywhere *near* that point, you're spending *way* too much time on the internet. And it's undermining your connection to reality. This is ideological capture taken to the level of psychopathy.

Thank you for what you said about factory farming. I saw a film about slaughterhouses and factory farms when I was a teen (a long time ago), and I was horrified and that opened my eyes. Haven’t eaten animals since.
Factory farms are not only devastating for the animals, they’re not good for people employed in them either.

Don't worry about it, Derek. There will always be critics out there, sharing their personal preferences and how you should accommodate them. It's not your job, nor is it possible to cater to everyone's individual preferences. This is your channel, and you get to cook however way you want. Your passion for vegan cooking is what I'm addicted to, as well as your creativity. There are a lot of other whole food vegan UA-camrs out there that I also follow to meet my husband's and my goal in our older years for oil-free, low fat, yet tasty vegan food. We love animals and the earth, and we also love our human animal selves. It's an easy swap for us to do oil free-baking and stir frying with aquafaba, homemade broth with parchment paper in the oven. Can't wait to try out your gorgeous looking tofu & tempeh Italian sausage recipe!

Im going to a wedding in February (mother of the groom here) there will be 150 guests ......148 of them will be consuming steak, chicken & shrimp and various other animal products.....2 of us, myself and 1 other woman are the only plant based eaters.....im appalled...i thought in this day and age the numbers on my side would be much higher.
This looks so delicious! I am retiring at the end of this month (yippee!!!!) and my immediate plans are to cook, cook, cook! I live alone and try to keep my meals simple because my job is demanding. I'm so looking forward to having the time and energy to cook meals like this one!

I've been mostly vegetarian due to health issues in an area that veggies available are salad veg and thats about it. I have stayed away from tofu and tempeh because I didn't know what the flavor profile was, what the difference was between them or how to prepare/cook-bake them. Two videos from you and I have an understanding of the ingredients, and my vegetarian meal options have expanded! Very grateful.
I appreciate "the ramblings"-I learn something from every single video-I'm a healthier vegetarian. So many people aren't aware of how much flavor a dish has once the meat is removed. Serving any of your recipes is an eye opener and even if it's served on the side in a hearty amount....we know there just isn't a flavor comparison.

I restarted my vegan journey a couple months ago even stronger since discovering your videos. You talk about finding the right textures and flavors to be "good enough" and it's completely changed the way I view cooking, especially tofu! I sometimes feel like a massive weirdo buying three (or more) blocks of tofu when I go to the store, but not only is it cheaper than the meat alternatives, I know it's a lot safer to prepare and I can make whatever my heart (and tongue) is craving. I haven't gotten into cooking with mushrooms, but it's on my list to try and experiment with. So thank you for making and sharing videos!

Omgoodness Frankie reminded me of my beautiful nonna! Im Australian Italian and raised in an Italian household and can relate to everything you said as an ethical vegan. Thank you for always talking about the animals and not being shy to speak the truth and not making it just a plant based cooking show like so many others. It’s a bit like the plant based doctors only talking about the health aspect ..but now Dr Frank Sabatino does advocate for the animals also …the planet and spirituality.

3:05 I could not agree more. I dove into the oil free end of the plant-based pool and IMMEDIATELY discovered how many flavor and texture rough edges fats smooth over. I'm absolutely convinced new vegans aren't missing meat so much as they're missing the animal fat content.
These days, I'm working on a balance of minimal oil and the absolute least added sweeteners I can stand.

I confess, I am a no-added-oils cook/eater, and it has helped me in a lot of ways, and my taste buds have changed in that I no longer crave it, and I don't miss it.
But I do not criticize you for using it. I understand the why. I welcome the challenges of making things w/o the added oil, and most of the time it works just fine.
I make a killer spicy Italian sausage much like this that I use with pasta and pizzas, but I use soya (textured soy). 😋

I get the being bye yourself. That’s my life. It’s been for quite awhile now. I like it. Thank you for being so transparent and sharing your story. I can’t wait to make this dish! I to grew up eating Italian foods and love them so much! I found out I had celiac about 30 years ago and was crushed 😢 but found alternatives along the way and made my own pasta and breads from scratch. They are the best! You know what’s in them. Then when I went vegan almost 7 years ago finding alternatives for everything just brought so much joy finding a healthier and compassionate way of eating is a win win!! I am making a vegan "sausage" pizza tonight with this! If you find yourself traveling to Oregon in your van...the Jackson Wellsprings in Ashland is a hippy/spiritual/low-end trailer park scene with campgrounds, an Olympic pool, dry and steam sauna, hot tub, and events...it's a hot spring, and the campsite bathroom has scorching hot water 24 hours a day, never runs out! There are 2 beautiful Buddhist temples here too. I love your guest chef idea, I want to beg Rooted, a vegan restaurant that just opened its second location in Medford (not the town you would think supports 3 vegan restaurants, it's odd) to contact you. For years I have always bought spices whole and used herbs fresh or frozen , it is just remarkable how much better it is. I also love using garlic and onion fresh as well as granulated for super flavor.
