You say that X is a bad position for crouch because it conflicts with moving with WASD but I think deus ex comes with movement bound to the arrow keys by default, checkmate!
For real though the controls are bonkers. From that era where they assumed you would be using the whole keyboard and not necessarily even have a mouse I think?
I think in the hacking you can even press alt+underlined letter on the UI to access buttons rather than using the mouse.
