Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (Live At Montreux1980)

- Опубліковано 18 вер 2012
- Marvin Gaye is an American legend. He was signed to the fledgling Motown label in 1961 by label founder Berry Gordy and later that year he married Gordy's sister. He scored a total of 39 US Top 40 singles for the label including such classics as "Let's Get It On", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Inner City Blues", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "What's Going On" and of course "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", all of which are included on this DVD. Marvin Gaye died in 1984, shot by his father following an argument, and was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987.
With a running time of around 100 minutes, this DVD captures Marvin Gaye at the very height of his powers and combines outstanding music with a scintillating live performance.

Marvin was so often trapped between being high as a kite, a state of different levels of depression, utter confusion and inner rambling chaos that when he had a normal moment of sanity and peace, he would write, create and produce songs based upon his journey and how he saw things through those experiences. His demons were relentless and he fought them for a long time. May God grant him eternal peace and rest his soul.
So true
😔
You really knew him?
Looks like he is fighting them right now.
It's a constant struggle
“Don’t punish me with brutality Come on talk to me so you can see what’s going on” that line always sends chills down my back because it’s so raw

Brother referred to us ALL!! Humanity...ALL!! How did we regress so much!
@Sean R Our behavior has regressed on so many levels. Blame who or what you want. I've lived a long time and have seen us take for granted and abuse what we used to be thankful for.
Dig that! 👊🏽
@Will Rich Thanks so much! Always one of my favorites through the years and I've lived many!
43 years ago and still one of the best songs ever performed, by one of the best ever vocalists.

Brotha UR on point! It’s still relevant! Well spoken truth!

It’s a worry, for the “protest and socially aware songs” that have been recorded down the years, nothing changes.
@@reginaldthomasbrown6115 I kind of agree but to my mind the songs remain the same, we just deal with the same old stuff that comes around like a merry go round

I actually don't have the words for this. High art, social philosophy, theology, and theater in one incredible moment. Marvin was truly one of the greats.
Actually you had great words for it, thank you!
It would be amazing if his concerts were theatrical because his songs/albums were stories from top to bottom and would have been great for him

What a beautiful human being, there will never be another like Marvin. indeed Marvin sang about the issues and struggles of just not only black folk but the world as a whole. I saw Marvin in concert a long time ago and I think I was the only white boy there, seeing him live was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Marvin was touched, he had to be in order for him to write and sing what he did. I miss you my brother!

What a beautiful and touching story to share. Marvin was truly one of a kind. There will never be another like him.
Smokey Robinson said he visited Marvin while he was writing the Album "What's Going On"...
He said Marvin told him "God is Writing this"...
As We have Witness....this Album is Timeless.....and Prophetic...
Thanks Marvin for being the Messenger....
He was spiritual.Great singer
@Will Rich No Disrespect....but I said ALBUM....What going on is just one song on the ALBUM....and just happen to be the title of the Album...
The Whole Album is a Classic and one of the Best ALBUM of All Times...
So no Disrespect.....The ALBUM is the Centerpiece which deals with various Truths in Life.....
From Paris.
True.
It is no coincidence that this song and album were released during this time period. When I 1st heard this song, I was in college at a predominantly white university (early 1970’s).
He was so much on point then and it is still relevant today. How profound and profedic
This album still gives me chills.
This man was genius....one of the most amazing singers of all time. Lucky Americans....be proud of him
Lucky us humans
He didnt win not one grammy for this album. Thats when I stopped watching the grammy award show. This song is timeless and still played. Our children's children's children will know who Brotha Marvin Pense Gaye is,.
Agreed. Marvin Gaye didn't fit the agenda so he didn't receive an award for his genius.
It's definitely a gem. However the truth is, it's a song that grew on many with time.
Only love can conquer hate, one of the most powerful lines in any lyric. Ever.
Cedar Shoals EVER
@Sean R It starts with self. Breaking the chains of hate/hurt/anger etc. I've heard & witnessed those not having experienced it in their personal life. As the saying goes, "hurt people hurt people." "Love" really is "the greatest of all these." (1 Corinthians 13:13) It takes healing of self for change to start. Sadly, there are those not wanting or willing 2 take the steps. All the best.
@Sean R GM, I'll respond to question later. Heading out to work. Stay safe and have a nice Tuesday.✌🏾
#SeanR Good morning,
I listened again closely to "Marvin Gaye's" song, he was a spiritual person and he was speaking about his individual thoughts and how he felt. Also, the need for people to come together. Wish he was here to get his thoughts accurately, but then again he left his music and listening to this live recording you hear his thoughts on matters. Yes, self introspection is needed. Also, admitting and then correcting self when I see errors. This is a humbling thing and it doesn't make a person small. It's a growth in character. Pride of self is good, but too much can lead to disaster. Look at the results. (Ecclesiastes 8:9) Take care and stay safe during these "trying" & "changing times." {2Tim. 3:1} The Bibles prophecies are truly being seen and fulfilled.
@@autumnsmom1117 Very well spoken. Nothing (good or bad) ever happens that doesn't start on the individual level. We cant do anything together until we (each) have that desire in our heart as individuals. I still use Marvin's line as a daily influence / reminder. Another is Seals and Crofts "Take us up, always up"
Marvin Gaye is in heaven now. He used the talent God gave him.

Sad state of the world we live in brother. The people “above us” making the decisions make to much money off of our pain when will everyone realise?
Let's give a shout-out to the those underrated HORNS 🙌🏾

True, but T Pain has and had a really great voice before everyone thought he was hidin' behind the auto tune effect when it was merely a simple effect, which eventually started a trend. So, your comment is just a waste of a comment. Go check T Pain's more recent videos, not that I'm a fan of his, but... it's the same ol' comment. Please.

This song brings back so many memories. Remember when it was released. Civil rights protest, Vietnam war. It was so iconic then as now. He expressed the feelings of so many people at the time.
