    I am a retired class A Water and Wastewater operator in Florida. For years I had the use of chemical thanks and had 3 for a Bi-O-filter for my 8,000 gal Koi pond. once a month I open up a drain valve to get rid of the sediment waste.. it does help to use on other plants. I know the concentration is very small.l..but it does works great.... now you got me thinking on expanding to grow food from my Bio-filters.......retired here but still working.....thanks. JT

    at 12:00 the height of the overflow does not matter when doing a siphon. the limiting factor is the point that the air enters. equilibrium is the top of the blue solids tank on one extreme, and then the intake of the flow into the plants on the other. the lowest water level would be equal to the bottom of the discharge of the solids filter.
    if you wanted an actual limit, remove one of the elbows from the inverted p-trap and put in a Tee. the top of the tee would allow air to enter and break the siphon.
    it seems that at 17:00 you had figured that out and fixed.....

    Maybe I didn’t quite get it but I’m wondering about the earthworms in the planting beds, do they live in these rough rocks (I’m thinking of normal earthworms and feel like they won’t live just in a rock bed) and are they fine with being flooded every 45 minutes ?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  6 років тому +1

      Yes, they live fine in the rocks and no, they don't have issues with the grow beds flooding with water. Red wiggler worms in the grow beds is a very common practice.

    Shawn, Great set up and very informative video. You are truly doing a blessed work for the community. Thank you and wish you much success. As far as insect and unwanted bugs prevention, incorporate African Marigold, garlic, onions, chives, basil, etc. in and around your system which will virtually eliminate all the unwanted creatures.

    Wouldn't the Duckweed compete for the Nitrates in the water that come from the fish/Worms? At some point that would end in the duck weed dieing off and shocking the fish and the plants with an ammonia spike or cause a lack of growth in the desired veggies due to less nitrates for food?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  5 років тому +5

      Since making this video, I don't promote growing duckweed in an aquaponics system. Yes, it does rob nutrients from the other plants.

    Love your honesty as you go through the process Shawn. I discovered Duck weed as a food source for fish when I put some in a back yard pond and had 10 little guppie fish in there - I forgot to feed them for about two weeks but they were all alive and then I stopped feeding them at all and the duck weed would feed them all. I used the excess duck weed as a brilliant compost booster!

    I'm think about getting into aquaponics myself and I really like your setup. Do you know how many gallons of water the grow bed holds with the media in it? Trying to work out how I am going to support the grow beds because I want to split a tote in half and put it underneath the grow beds for a dual sump to save space.

      I calculated the cubic area of my grow beds and figure 80% of it was taken by the grow media (river rock in my case).

    Hey Shawn,
    Something you may want to try for the critter control is to install some mesh type netting around and over your grow beds. If they can't get to your crops they can't lay their eggs on them.
    If you get a small enough mesh size this will actually take care of most all of the pest problems and provide shade for more tender crops.
    Note: you can introduce beneficials, etc. into the netted areas. GOD Bless and keep you.

      actually, removed the duckweed grow bed. It's a plant that sucks up a lot of nutrients and robs it from the other plants. We now recommend a high quality fish feed, along with other items such as moringa leaves, black soldier flies, and etc.

      @@thehealthawakening use a much smaller duckweed container for feed. Excess can be dried and then ground and processed into pellets.
      Fish solid waste can be great fertilizer for a ground garden bed.
      You may also want to look into raising freshwater crustaceans like freshwater oysters, shrimp, and lobster or crayfish. They are also great for helping to break down excess solid waste as well as vegetable and animal products you wish to dispose of. Freshwater lobsters (from Australia) are also quite excellent eating... and can handily take care of excess duckweed and dead fish. Many people simply simply put a filter screen on the output in their swirl filter and just keep a few in there.

    You can also make a tea out of moringga and other products. In the Philippines it's used in many dishes and soups. Plus now they even make moringga spreads and ice cream. I was able to visit a restaurant there called Bohol Bee Farm where they made ice cream. It's a very nutritious plant. When I read about it, they even say it can cure malnutrition. Do look more into it. You may just be surprised at the other uses you can learn about.

    Great video, and nice system. I wouldn't have added a swirl filter for your system as you don't have any DWC beds, but I love it's simplistic design. I didn't hear you mention what kind of fish your using, but most of the regular fish used for aquaponics will eat your caterpillars. It means keeping up with it by hand, but throw them in the tank and will make a great treat for your fish. The one thing that seems like might be an inconvenience with your system is how high off the ground the fish tanks are. When it comes time to harvest your fish you might have some trouble catching them without maybe a stool. Only other thing I would say is that the nitrogen cycle is ammonium to nitrites to nitrates. It's the nitrates that the plants utilize as fuel. Again, great video. This is the first of your videos I've found, but looking forward to watching the rest.

    • @AlariRuns
      @AlariRuns 8 років тому +1

      +AlariRuns Oh ... one more thought. You can freeze excess duckweed for later use when maybe it's not producing as well thanks to weather or what not.

    Very informative video. Thanks for posting. I'm thinking of doing a smaller setup featuring one IBC of fish, and a top and bottom for plants in my back yard. I was thinking of setting the fish tank into the ground much like you did for the sump pit so I could look down on the fish. As well as growing stuff I thought it'd be nice to treat it as an aquarium of sorts. It also mean that if I planned the layout, the waist height grow beds could then drain straight back into the fish tank, rather than going to a sump tank first, and then if I left the pipes draining the solids from the fish tank to eject the solids as you had it set up initially without the pipe to let in air, I could rely on the siphon effect to feed the plants without needing to purchase a pump. Is there any reason you can think about why this wouldn't work or what potential problems taking that approach would cause for me before I do anything rash? :P

    • @WiseguyWill

    Good video! very well presented. Have some additional questions:
    1. What did you use to paint everything blue?
    2. Did you consider using black to greater reduce any possible algae growing in fish tank and grow beds?
    3. What size PVC pipes are you using for the grow beds?
    4. Do you have any trouble maintaining adequate water pressure with that many outlets?
    5. How long does it take to fill your grow beds ?
    6. How many gallons does your pump move and the head height?
    7. Are you using a SLO pipe (solid lift overflow) in your fish tanks to uplift the waste on the bottom and in corners of fish tank?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  7 років тому

      1. latex paint
      2. no, lighter color is better for us due to the extreme heat in our area
      3. in the video (2"), but you can use various sizes
      4. no, not at all
      5. on the average 30 minutes to 40 minutes
      6. about 975
      7. no
