    I am a retired class A Water and Wastewater operator in Florida. For years I had the use of chemical thanks and had 3 for a Bi-O-filter for my 8,000 gal Koi pond. once a month I open up a drain valve to get rid of the sediment waste.. it does help to use on other plants. I know the concentration is very small.l..but it does works great.... now you got me thinking on expanding to grow food from my Bio-filters.......retired here but still working.....thanks. JT

    at 12:00 the height of the overflow does not matter when doing a siphon. the limiting factor is the point that the air enters. equilibrium is the top of the blue solids tank on one extreme, and then the intake of the flow into the plants on the other. the lowest water level would be equal to the bottom of the discharge of the solids filter.
    if you wanted an actual limit, remove one of the elbows from the inverted p-trap and put in a Tee. the top of the tee would allow air to enter and break the siphon.
    it seems that at 17:00 you had figured that out and fixed.....

    Wouldn't the Duckweed compete for the Nitrates in the water that come from the fish/Worms? At some point that would end in the duck weed dieing off and shocking the fish and the plants with an ammonia spike or cause a lack of growth in the desired veggies due to less nitrates for food?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  5 років тому +5

      Since making this video, I don't promote growing duckweed in an aquaponics system. Yes, it does rob nutrients from the other plants.

    Maybe I didn’t quite get it but I’m wondering about the earthworms in the planting beds, do they live in these rough rocks (I’m thinking of normal earthworms and feel like they won’t live just in a rock bed) and are they fine with being flooded every 45 minutes ?

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  6 років тому +1

      Yes, they live fine in the rocks and no, they don't have issues with the grow beds flooding with water. Red wiggler worms in the grow beds is a very common practice.

    Love your honesty as you go through the process Shawn. I discovered Duck weed as a food source for fish when I put some in a back yard pond and had 10 little guppie fish in there - I forgot to feed them for about two weeks but they were all alive and then I stopped feeding them at all and the duck weed would feed them all. I used the excess duck weed as a brilliant compost booster!

    You can also make a tea out of moringga and other products. In the Philippines it's used in many dishes and soups. Plus now they even make moringga spreads and ice cream. I was able to visit a restaurant there called Bohol Bee Farm where they made ice cream. It's a very nutritious plant. When I read about it, they even say it can cure malnutrition. Do look more into it. You may just be surprised at the other uses you can learn about.

    Hey Shawn,
    Something you may want to try for the critter control is to install some mesh type netting around and over your grow beds. If they can't get to your crops they can't lay their eggs on them.
    If you get a small enough mesh size this will actually take care of most all of the pest problems and provide shade for more tender crops.
    Note: you can introduce beneficials, etc. into the netted areas. GOD Bless and keep you.

    Looks GREAT! Nice addition with the duckweed, my favorite part of the system! You should dry and store the surplus!

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  4 роки тому

      actually, removed the duckweed grow bed. It's a plant that sucks up a lot of nutrients and robs it from the other plants. We now recommend a high quality fish feed, along with other items such as moringa leaves, black soldier flies, and etc.

    • @gregoryhalye8907
      @gregoryhalye8907 4 роки тому

      @@thehealthawakening use a much smaller duckweed container for feed. Excess can be dried and then ground and processed into pellets.
      Fish solid waste can be great fertilizer for a ground garden bed.
      You may also want to look into raising freshwater crustaceans like freshwater oysters, shrimp, and lobster or crayfish. They are also great for helping to break down excess solid waste as well as vegetable and animal products you wish to dispose of. Freshwater lobsters (from Australia) are also quite excellent eating... and can handily take care of excess duckweed and dead fish. Many people simply simply put a filter screen on the output in their swirl filter and just keep a few in there.

    A couple of questions from a missionary in Papua New Guinea
    1. What sort of businesses can I get IBC's from?
    2. Why did you paint the IBC's? Was the Color important?
    3. How do the Bell syphons work?
    4. How much food do the fish need per day per fish?
    5. Could you have used smaller diameter piping to save money?
    6. Could the grow beds have been shallower to reduce the amount of media you needed?
    7. Is duckweed found all over the world? Not sure if I can get it in PNG, if not I'll need an alternative because fish food will be too expensive.
    8. What kind of fish are you using?
    9. How fast do they grow and reproduce?
    Loved the video, very informative

    • @thehealthawakening
      @thehealthawakening  8 років тому +1

      +Watchman Five 1. you would have to search your local area 2. painting keeps algae from growing, color is important to keep it from heating the water 3. bell siphons - please research UA-cam, many great videos on them 4. I feed them enough to where they eat it within 10 to 15 minutes 5. You need to be more concerned about water flow, going cheap will hinder your system. 6. It's just a common choice as in depth and such, I'm sure you can try it, but river rock is cheap. 7. It's common in many places, don't know about your area. You will have to research that one, but there is many alternatives 8. Tilapia 9. They will grow out in about 6 to 9 months.

    Undo the bolts on the top rails and slip the tanks out to cut the rails with the sawzall. Doesn't endanger your tanks that way and allows you to use the saw. I have a saw and not the bolt cutter. Removing the tank for cutting also allows you to mark the tank and cut straighter lines :)

    Great video. I’m not sure if it would work but I think it would be interesting if you also added a hydroponic vertical garden also using the fish tank water. You could add a second pump to supply it and then it could either drain back into the fish tank or into the filter beds. I love the set up you have tho and plan to try to make something similar just smaller scale this summer.

    Wow what a amazing video I have watched more of this type of video than one can imagine. Your video has made everything about the system so much clearer than all of the others combined. I have a almost 4000 sq ft green house that I purchased used and I'm in the process of setting up I want to produce fish and veggies for my family and to be able to also sell to supplement to cost of the system. Do you have any update on your system and your progress?
