Just a tip for removing the DVD drive or working on the mainboard.
The HDD always goes out first and goes in last. This is why the DVD drive caddy has this nose on the side.
You don't need to fiddle around like you did in this video.
The thermal paste was always like this even when the console came out. It's more like a glue then a paste.
I wish I had this remover for it back then. 😅

There where a few caps near the gpu/cpu that need to be replaced since they are bulging

Great guide as usual! I got an xbox a few months ago and did these steps back then but this is the best tutorial on yt! I've just got a PS3 and been following your guides on jailbreaking with the Evilnat CFW and setting up webman and multilane for playing backups!

One other thing I would recommend is replacing the rubber band in the DVD drive. I haven't had an issue with the Phillips drives with that, but every Samsung drive had an issue with it. I've saved so much money buying a couple of Xbox's with a "stuck DVD drive" that the only issue was needed a new rubber band.

Know what works well for this? Those small hair rubber bands you find in stores like Target in the beauty section. They're usually clear as they're worn in hair for braids and so forth. Stretch 'em out and they're almost a perfect fit for the drive. :)

I hate that gunk under the heatsinks. WD40 on a rag takes care of that paste really well. Just wipe off the WD40 with some alcohol after. For those tall caps by the CPU and GPU, with those bulging, the console will eventually stop powering on. I ran into several, and those are almost always bulging. Console5 is a great place to get capacitors for multiple retro consoles.

You have bad (swollen) capacitors around your CPU and they need to be replaced. I just did this job on a 1.6 that would not turn on after sitting for a year.

Yeah, there are some other challenges. I just hope that those that do at least this much to their system can do something to extend their life. My first Xbox back in the 2000s literally burned up while I was out visiting family for a bit locally. Came home to a burning smell and a dead PSU. Didn't even know it was a thing and that it could have been prevented.

Wow, that's a scary thing to happen! I think I'll be keeping my consoles unplugged unless I am using them. Thank you for all of your hard work on these videos. You truly make the easiest to understand videos in the gaming community.@@blainelocklair

I tried that Nexus fan in order to reduce noise. Temps ran higher than the original fan, requiring me to increase the speed, and then it wasn't nearly so quiet. In the end I reinstalled the original fan (after cleaning it and applying a drop of oil to the bearing).
