Trying to FIX: Faulty Xbox One X No Display

  • Hi, in this video I attempt to fix a faulty Xbox One X which doesn't display on the television. I purchased it from a viewer named Myron who has attempted some work on the HDMI Retimer Chip. I need to replace the HDMI chip and also 3 missing components. This is the full length version. If you want the quick version please see • Trying to FIX: Faulty ...
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

The funny thing about those tiny components is that when you want them to stay on they'll fly off from the force of a mosquito's fart.
However, when you WANT to take them off a board they're attached with some kind of titanium alloy solder that demands a tube of flux, 5000 degree temps and 4 hours work per component.
The joy of fixing electronics, haha.
I knocked off a couple 1mm resistors and a capacitor off my 60GB PS3 and the came off with the slightest tap. When *trying* to take off their neighbor components (same exact components) it was nearly impossible 😅

      Lmaoo !
Also I was wondering something about the components you put in place. How do they actually set themselves in place ? I thought that you just had to place them well and put heat on them for several minues and that's all but in this video Vince mentionned that the components were doing a "little dance" etc. Also it moved and a second later he said "there we go it's in place". That's the part I don't get, how does it goes from moving to strongly attached in a second ? Thanks !

I did the same! I though, hmmm, this new format is garbage... Very few ear piercing continuity beeps, no pinging microscopic components across the room, no joy of fault discovery or sudden realisation of what everyone else was screaming at the screen for 5 minutes ;-)
It didn't make for good viewing at all. I like all those things and more, even the ear blasting beeps. I watched it anyway, then saw it was the 'Quick Version'. Thank goodness the original format remains unchanged! Phew.

I love how when you replaced the resistors and capacitor, they were a little wonky, but as you heated the board to pull the broken hdmi chip off to replace it, when the leaded solder melted, the surface tension aligned them perfectly. MacGyvering the Sync button was just pure gold :)

Thanks Vince for another nice video. I suggest you two advices for hot air desoldering. If you don't wanna stress the board with hi temperature I add some low-melt solder to solder pads around the chip. (I bought it from Northridge fix and really changed my life...) and the last one... protect the board before using hot air. I use kapton tape or simple aluminium foil folded many times. You save a lot of time and no more damages to nearby components. Keep on your videos, you rock!

Great vid vince and well done on the repair. In the case of that connector and the pulled pads - what I've done in the past is use the strand core off a multi stranded wire, it's typically thinner than any enamel wire you can get off the shelf (earphone cables have some of the finest - albeit enameled wire that i can find which may be ideal for your purpose) then after soldering it in use something blunt - i use the round portion of one of those pointy dental picks to smoosh the copper wire down and gently stoke it, the copper is so maliable that it will eventually start smoothing flat (remember being copper it will also become more brittle) once it's as flat as you feel comfortable i coat in UV mask then when thats cured i flatten the mask down with 1000grit sandpaper to make it level with the rest of the board, heat up the topside of the board with your hot air gun for a few mins so it can absorb the heat and melt the solder, then place the connector down and hit it the back of the board with the gun - it should take now with that and lead free solder..... if not, get some 140c solder for next time, not ideal but better than nothing. The hard drive didn't sound healthy i'd plug into a pc and run some sort of integrity scan or disk tool to ensure it's not bad or a full format on the console iteself if possible. Thanks again :)

  • @martinnash007
    @martinnash007 2 роки тому

Hi. Great repair. You got there in the end. I think that you need some low melt solder or a board pre-heater to heat the underside of the board prior to working on the top side. Those ground planes sap the heat away so quickly and efficiently unfortunately.

    Hi Vince,
As always I enjoyed your video.
I just had a thought about the broken connector. It might be a good idea to get a new connector and just using whatever pads is left on the motherboard to hold it. It sure is better then a bodge wire. And also as you mentioned some pads are just grounds. And from what I understand USB don't need all those pins to work, so maybe you are lucky that the ones you need is still on there.

Hi Vince, why not use some low melt solder like Chip Quick on the legs of the chip to mix it with the unleaded factory solder and lower it's melting temperature? You could apply it with a soldering iron to the legs so that it mixes up good and then apply heat and take the chip off. I think it could save you time and prolonged exposure of the board to heat. I think Chip Quick has a melting temperature of 80-90 degrees and can really lower the overall melting temperature when mixed with the factory solder.

Vince what I would suggest I know it would have been more work, but think I would suggest doing wires for all the pins on the USB next time, that way it will reflow level, plus would also connect all the pins evenly, I know plastic is the worst thing to have around a heat gun, and electronics as plastic melts way more easier. great fix video, I am wondering whether the one capacitor would be 1ohm seen as the one on your board came up as 1.25 ohm, and the 2 ohm that you fitted came up as 2.25 ohm. as an outsider guess and not knowing too much about electronics, apart from knowing some basics, basically car maintenance from the early 90's.

Cheers AR. 5 or 10 times smaller!!!! 0.1mm is already hard enough to manage. Do you think 0.01 or 0.02mm be OK for something like a USB port on the power pins or would it likely burn through. I presume on data lines it would be OK? I might get some :-)

@@Mymatevince for data pins should be fine, power pins usually uses more pins connected together 0.01mm is about 17mA an 0.02mm 33ma

Hi vince, tip when measuring low value resistors short your test probs together first and make a note of the reading this will be the resistance of your leads then take this off your reading of the low value resistor your measuring also i would invest in some fine tiped gold plated test leads there not that expensive from ebay.

Vince where do you get your components from? Do you buy strips or books? I want to fix a laptop as a project and require some components. I know the values I need.

I would suggest to look for them on AliExpress, and buy them from the same seller to save on shipping costs.

Hey Vince. If your wire is causing the connection to be too raised from the other pads just put a bit of wire on all the pads. Not really an option for a larger number of pads but i think you could make it work here.

The issue is definitely the thermal pads they are incredibly tiny and dont even cover the chips properly.

You could use tiny wires from something like a usb cable shielding or just multi-threaded tiny cable to solder those pins for the connector. I've done it - it works absolutely fine.

file down the ends of your hot tweezers Vince... They come in all kinds of ends so I did the same to mine and they work much better now that they are finer.

Just a couple of tips: if you are a right-handed person I would suggest you to hold the hot air gun with the left hand and tweezers with the right one. You don't really need any precision in pointing the nozzle towards the board - 1 cm to the side won't make things worse. But you could surely benefit from holding the tweezers with your right hand, this makes a difference (IMO). And the second one - sharpen your tweezers with some file or a piece of sand paper, this helps a lot. Of course it's easier just to buy some new precision tweezers to work with SMDs, but if you already have those just by sharpening them you could save some money.

Did you try that other chip back on your xbox? Only asking because you had the exact same fault after replacing it with the working one then discovered it was in 4K mode. I was wondering if the missing resistors was the fault?

I had a blank screen, but had sound. Hard reset 6 or 7 times and same thing. I watch this, hard reset and held the power and sync for 15+ seconds and my xbox turned on and went to home screen like normal. Did I mess up and just get lucky? I swear I've always used the power and eject button to bring that screen up but even that usually didnt work for me.
