YOU GUYS, we FINALLY figured out that NOBODY CARES about scales and music theory!!! Lmao no but for real, for those of you who don't have time for that stuff but still want to learn piano, check out the brand new Piano Jumpstart which doesn't require any reading music or theory at all! pianojumpstart.com/
Today history has been made.
Once I saw this in theaters I instanly thought, "Charles has *gotta* make a video on this!"
but- but I care about music theory and scales :(
Scales help with walks and bridges and solos. Wtf are you talking about?
any chance that this will be added to your existing academy courses?
Jack Black rickrolled us with the chord progression
Came down here to say the same, but you beat me to it.😆
damn, same :D always someone quicker around
I'm gonna "umm actually" so hard right now. For the most part, yes, yes he does.
But actually, there is a one note difference from us getting rickrolled. This song is a [ IV-V-iii-vi ], but Never Gonna Give You Up is a [ ii7-V-iii-vi ] progression, which basically means the base note of the first chord in this song is a minor third up from the base note in Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up, so in theory, we are one note away from being rickrolled, effectively rickrolling us, but not actually.
Fun fact though, this song DOES have the same progression as Rick Astley's other number one hit single, Together Forever.
I SWEAR I HEARD IT TOO HGUHGUYGUYJBJ
I thought I was crazy lol
If they used the Rickroll progression on PURPOSE then this gets even more legendary than already is.
I was just about to say... At first it tickled my brain like "why does that sound so familiar?"
No it’s just a common emotionally sounding chord progression
I thought the exact same thing
@@RobinsMusic it's not that common, and they're both in the same somewhat uncommon key of Bbm or Db/C#
I'm guessing someone pitch shifted it and chopped it up to fit. Pretty damn funny.

That chord progression is phenomenal, it really just tells you that Bowser's never gonna give her up
Or let her down.
Or run around and desert her.
or make her cry
Or say goodbye
Or tell a lie and hurt her
Jack Black has always been a fascinating musician to me. This guy has one of be best vocals in the world, but instead of using his musical talents seriously in pushing his musical career to the very top of the ladder (where I believe he belongs), he's like "No, that's against my nature" and he sings purely for entertainment and laughs. If you love music, you cannot NOT love Jack Black. He's the Man.
No one genre nor metier can contain the phenomenalnous of.....Jack Black.
Jack Black is nowhere near one of the best singers in the world.
@@steveng6721he is not the best singer but the best performer. Not taking away from his skills at all, but while he wouldnt be as impressive just sitting down and being serious, he takes the stuff he already has and sells it BIG
Stickin' it to the man

I can't believe I just got rickrolled by a chord progression
You know the rules and so do I.
Yup it's (IV-V-iii-vi), the meme progression.
I was just about to say the same thing!
Crazy😂😂
Bro, I saw your comment, and I thought the Rickroll was going to be something more explicit but I didn't expect that
Going with the "simp Bowser" route was ABSOLUTELY the right choice for the movie.
They opened with a shot of him basically destroying a city with his fire breath to show how dangerous he is, but balanced it out with him being a simp. Exactly how it should be.
They made him simultaneously terrifying and absurd. That's the sweet spot pocket for Bowser's character.
And Jack NAILED that balance vocally
agreed. Because you can see that he’s absolutely ridiculous… but he’s like that stalker you know is dangerous. It’s objectively absurd, but terrible to be in the sights of
A simp for my twin.
So BFF with 616 Thanos over shared disappointments and hopes?
I would describe Jack Black's style like a good shitpost.
He makes it seems so silly, almost low effort, but there's a ton of skill and know-how involved.
He’s 100% a walking, talking, human mashup.
When you actually put in a ton of effort to make the song sound low effort
"High-effort low-brow" ironic comedy is a genuine art imho, and the thing that separates a good shitpost from a shit post.
@@BrassCole It’s Weird Al type stuff
Like max0r editing but as a person
The Piano says "Ludwig Von Koopa", which is the name of one of the Koopalings introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. All their names are based on different musicians.
Really? Did I miss that? Who's Lemmy, Iggy, Morton, Wendy, Roy, and Larry?
@@SeraphsWitness Those are Bowser's other koopalings.
@@froddobaggins Duh. I'm asking what musician's they're supposedly based on.
@@SeraphsWitness Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, Iggy Pop from the Stooges, Wendy O Williams from the Plasmatics, Roy Orbison, Larry Mullen Jr from U2 (this one is disputed).
Morton is named after Morton Downey Jr. who was a talk show host so he is an exception.
@@TyranBatten Crazy, I never knew. I mean, Ludwig is obvious because of the hair coupled with the name.
0:34 "How do you describe what this is? It's the whole energy of Jack Black"
I'd call it 'Silly, but Sincere'. He's goofy as all hell, but also so incredibly genuine as a performer that there's no choice but to respond in kind. It's such a rare quality, yet one that Jack Black has in spades
Black jack of spades ♠️
Weird Al Jankovic and Jack Black are brothers from another mother. Exceptionally skilled musicians that not only wow us with their music, but also make us laugh. Tim Minchin also does great music comedy, but with a different flair.

*_Fun Fact:_** Apparently Jack Black produces an original song for every character he plays in a movie just for the heck of it. He even did one for his role in Jumanji and if you watch the Graham Norton interview, it's a flawless masterpiece too. This man truly is a national treasure*
i cant keep a straight face watching this video knowing charles doesnt recognise the chord progression
I instantly knew the first time I heard this in theaters that Jack Black wrote Peaches.
It just has such a dumb, yet powerful, feeling to it. I love it.
Fun Fact:
The chord in Bowser’s song is called the “Royal road progression” (王道進行, ōdo shinkō) in Japanese pop music/anime songs, and it’s popular because of it’s uplifting effect
Here’s a very good video explaining it: m.ua-cam.com/video/6aezSL_GvZA/v-deo.html&pp=ygUUSmFwYW5lc2UgbXVzaWMgY2hvcmQ%3D

@@THEBIGBEEFIS ? It's not a rickroll or anything
@@THEBIGBEEFIS i tested it its actually what he's talking about
I am so much more fucking pissed that it’s NOT a Rick Roll
Thank you for sharing this! I had no idea, this is pretty cool stuff.
The brilliance of JBs vocal is that he sings so gratuitously over the top while still sounding sincere
The brilliance of the vocals is the fact that it’s Jack Black
You don’t understand. I NEED this song to be nominated for an Oscar.
Jack Black deserves a grammy award
I need it to win 😊
I'd be fun to see the Oscars rickrolled 🤣
It's already confirmed that it's nominated.
Oscar is going to let you down
I was just thinking "Hold up, I recognize that chord progression"
We just got Rickrolled by Bowser, didn't we?
Yes…yes we did
I love Jack Black's parodies because they are not just crummy copies of a song with the lyrics swapped out, they are their own amazing songs- with the added benefit of being really funny.
Parodies can be bangers, just look at weird al
Weird Al Yankovic looks at you
Isn't that kind of the entire point of Tenacious D?
I'd say, for example, that this *could* be a parody of NGGYU, but we don't know. JB would have to be the one to say if it's supposed to be!
@@jimskywaker4345 Example: "Dare to be Stupid" vs. Devo (as well as "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones, covered by the Go Go Rockets for Spiderman: Homecoming)
I really want to see Jack Black star in a medieval period film. Not exactly sure why, but I just really think he would have a hell of a time with it.
I am convinced that Jack Black would work perfectly in basically any film
He would make an amazing bard.
would be great to see him as some sort of medieval play actor
He was in the mandolorian
He kicked it real old school in the movie Year One
Of course jack black would rick roll everybody with a simple chord progression
I feel very subtly rick-rolled
Bowser is never gonna give up Peach.
FYI It's called Royal Road Progression. It's very common and popular in Japan's music industry.
Like Rainbow Road?
Considering how Nintendo writes Bowser as a character, especially in the Paper Mario Series, Jack Black was the absolute perfect choice for Bowser. I thought before seeing the movie that it wouldn't be great or too over the top, and I was dead wrong. It was really well done.
I felt that it had the same vibe as mario and luigi superstar saga
@@jimskywaker4345 I agree, and it worked really well. The humor alone is worth playing Superstar Saga.
Honestly, given Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser is even more a lovestruck idiot in recent memory and thus his portrayal here is especially fitting.
6:45 I'm pretty sure the piano says Ludwig Von Koopa. He's the eldest member of the Koopalings apparently. It surprises me everyday how they managed to pack this many easter eggs and references into the Mario Movie. It's amazing.
best Koopaling
It’s my name sorta
Reference to Beethoven, actually!
@@wyattstevens8574 it's both a koopaling references and a Beethoven reference
Jack Black pours his soul into everything he does, no matter how goofy, and I love him for it
I applaud him doing it so seriously.
Including record store nerd /maniac in High Fidelity! That's where I first took notice of Whirlwind Jack.
Chord progression is such a "You're no stranger to loooveee..." evocation.
It being in the anime chord progression totally fits.
4 5 3 6, The Anime chords
That song was one of the best parts of that movie. Jack Black is a national treasure.
Wait, so the movie just rick rolled us all by having Jack Black as Bowser sings a love song for princess Peach? I think there is a point where memes go to far...
bruh bowser be like that tho. Don’t be dramatic. It’s a goofy kids movie not a cinematic master showcase in filmography.
shut up cynic, enjoy the movie
Its actually the star power theme slowed down but it does sound just like Rickroll
@@TheUpa Nice catch. I did not hear that.
@@TheUpawhich one? isn't the default one just a two chord loop?
I love that, other that the obvious rickroll, this is the Royal Road Progression, which is one of the most used and loved progressions in Japan, so it adds that japanese pop vibe to the song fitting the Nintendo aesthetic. Absolutely genius.
Have you ever seen the video where they turn "Never gonna give you up" into an anime intro?
Random fact: it was John Spiker (Tenacious D’s bassist) who played the piano on Peaches!
Spiker sounds like the name of one of Bowser's henchmen.
I LOVE when songs don't start in "the key" ...so like....that Gb major chord followed by the Ab major chord feels like a five of five...but it's actually a natural chord within the "actual key" of Bbm! Part of Your World does that too and it's just so cool!!
i dont know what any of that means but i liked your comment anyways
How do we know if the 4-5-3-6 progression is major or minor? We never see the 1 chord show up, but I don't think that means it *isn't* major.
Charles I LOVE how you're started highlighting the keys on the keyboard on the bottom as you play them. It's made it super easy and fun to watch and feel like I'm playing along.
As someone that's also into animation, they modeled and animated this movie so incredibly well. Just watching Bowser sing, someone programed all those movements
If I remember correctly, this chord progression is like the I-V-vi-IV of Japan. They used it for a ton of anime music and jpop. I found a whole video essay of it somewhere on UA-cam.
There are a few western popular music that uses it and it just so happens, at least 2 of them are from Rick Astley
David Bennett? He says it is like the "1-5-6-4" or "6-4-1-5" of Japan.
@@wyattstevens8574 Yeah, that was probably it.
So this song shares a chord progression with never gonna give you up and I hereby demand a remix

ua-cam.com/video/rcN8ORIwExM/v-deo.html not a bot, just what you asked for hahaha
They exist!
Jack Black always had that thing where everything he does is kind of buffoonish, but his voice and sense of music and especially the cliches is so damned good you can't not be impressed if you're a musician. "Sasquatch" from the TV show is an amazing tune.
Definitely a funny and catchy song! It had me crying laughing in the theaters for sure! Bowser's piano in the movie says "Ludwig Von Koopa" like one of the Kooplings from the games, and a play on Beethoven, to answer your near end of video question lol
This song has been stuck in my head for a week now since I saw this movie 😂 It is absolutely unironically so amazing
We heard the song and it just remained
I have a feeling I'll go the same way (just watched the movie today)
If you love this song, and you love Jack Blacks whole "unironically good" situation, then I highly recomend checking out Tenacious D. The exact same situation
The piano said "Ludwig Von Koopa"
I'm glad you made tis video. The song is so simple and catchy. People in my theater were singing it after the end credits rolled. Jack Black is a master of his craft.
I think my favorite takeaway from this song existing is the fact that everyone is doing like a deep dive into Jack Black's personal band that he's had for decades at this point and so not only did Jack get to have fun making this song, but now people can discover either a taste of music they didn't have before or an appreciation for music they never would have heard otherwise, but I just really really enjoy the avenue that giving Jack Black specifically a song created, he nailed it as Bowser like I knew he would but the fact they Simped him up just added more to the song and they just did right by Jack and Bowser and just all of us, just everyone benefits from this, this was awesome
When you’re just playing the simple chord progression, it sounds like never gonna give you up lol
Came here to say this, glad I wasn't the only one who heard it
Holy crap that has to be on purpose
Watched the movie yesterday but in French, discovered Jack Black was the one voicing Bowser in English and it suddenly made a lot of sense that they made Bowser sing
The piano says "Ludwig Von Koopa" on it. It is the name of one of Bowser's Koopalings, and they are all named after musicians, this one specifically was named after Beethoven
I love watching you process and explain music in real time. I love your genuine enjoyment of just experiencing all these little pieces that create a whole and all the possibilities. Its wonderful
Royal road ftw. Love that progression. So much Japanese music uses it, it's like the national chord progression.
6:45 It was clearer in the movie - the writing on the piano is "Ludwig von koopa". Nice little reference, considering the koopalings weren't in the film
Of course this was an intentional chord progression. Jack Black (one half of the legendary power duo, Tenacious D, alongside his brother, KG) is one of, if not *the* most genius composers of our age.
Jack is a straight up comedic genius
can’t believe jack black rick rolled us all with that chord progression
My guy, while i really appreciate your breakdowns of the music pieces and the wisdom you bestow upon us with a passion unrivaled, i still want to congratulate you on your physical progression. You look good man.
As always, thanks for the in-depth analysis. Good stuff!

I just wanna thank you. Every time I watch your stuff you remind me that I need to practice
Literally just came from the Roal Road progression video with the sound still in my head. Immediately rung all the right bells, feels almost unreal.
That's the Royal road progression!
Mario music has used it along with a bunch of anime and Japanese pop/video game music. It's Japan's "4 chords"
This song is like a flashback, warm nights, almost left behind, suitcase of memories…
Damn you! 😂
Your videos get me so exited and I always end up going to play something myself
One day I’ll save up and get a piano again! I MISS it
I play by ear and it’s really interesting to hear you verbalize concepts only my ears understand. I leaned about add 9 today. SUBSCRIBED!
I think every second time in the verse the F minor 7 is changed to a F major. I learned it a few days ago right after I watched the movie. I was positively surprised that Jack Black sings it in the original, the song was translated to german - it was funny but not even close to the Jack Black version.
Love your content! Greetings from germany.
Fab song. Lives rent-free in my head.
Also, I wish Central Park was a more popular show. I'd love to hear your analysis on some of the songs.
It just hits me hard every time he plays the chord progression.
Bless you soul rick astly
This song has been stuck in my head for the last 3 days and not even the loss of ones child can compare to the agony I've been feeling all those days.
He NEEDS the Grammy and Oscar next year
I saw a comment elsewhere that really nailed it: Jack Black writes his songs to be parody and funny, but performs them as if they came from the very soul of humanity itself - emotional, deep, full effort.
These chords are super common in anime and japanaese music. You'll hear it everywhere.
Great, both the artwork with Jack Black and your reaction video 😂❤
Also - you didn’t mention in the video - is the Fm7 chord transforming to F major 7 to have a more dramatic dominant sound
Jack Black is a tremendous musical talent but it's the comedy that he executes with such serious precision that gets me every time.
On a related note, I was just relistening to Old and Wise off of the Alan Parons Project album Eye in the Sky, and he uses that same exact device you discuss around 3:15. He couples it with a Picardy third to great effect. It's an elegantly simple tension/release cadence.
Hey Charles! We'd love to see you playing and singing a COVER of Peaches!
Did not expect this breakdown. But thank you!
I've had this song stuck in my head since I saw the movie a week ago.
Seems like a chord progression that is used Time After Time.
The Db chord is actually played with an F in the bass (after the Bb minor) to go back to the Gb chord, which makes total sense
Some people called it royal road progression 😊😊, anyway thanks for reviewing this awesome "peaches"
Charles, have you ever done a video where you take well known ad jingles and flesh them out into actual "songs".
There's definitely something that makes a jingle a jingle. Really curious if you could parse out what makes that so.
Great video here, as always!

I love this song! The instrumental, alone seems pretty simple to play but with the chorus, it’s a whole different story. The scores in the entire movie are absolutely incredible and I highly recommend listening to them because they are so good!
Also, at 6:50, it says Ludwig von Koopa. His name is a reference to Beethoven, from what I can remember. That’s why his name is signed on the piano.

It's the Platonic Ideal of an 80's Power Ballad.
At 1:20: My guy, that chord progression is the cheekiest RickRoll of all time.
About 2 minutes in to the breakdown video, and for some reason the piano progression felt nostalgically familiar - it reminds me of the chorus of "Busses and Trains" by Bachelor Girl, so much I had to pause this video to relisten to that song and got gut-punched by nostalgia for my childhood of the 90's.
This Song Is Exceptional. Even Though It's A Basic Piano Piece, There Is Some Scent In The Lyrics And Speed Of The Vocals That Are Really Warming.
This really shows Bowser is never gonna give up loving Peach
Hey Charles could you do a video on Deceptive Cadences and their famous uses in music? I always find the most iconic and memorable music uses deceptive cadences since our ear never naturally wants to go that way but always loves how it's resolved
THIS MADE ME SO HAPPYY
It says “Ludwig Von Koopa” on the piano, i had a great laugh in the theater when i saw it
