Was standing at Lime Street station waiting for a train to London just after this came out. As this song started playing in my headphones I glanced up the platform and there were the whole band waiting for the same train. One of those weird serendipitous moments in life.
Amy was there with her band, also performing. She was spellbound, and the song never left her head, until Ronson convinced her to record it, she sings it all the time.
i met dave, he is the biggest celeb iv ever met and i liked him, he ate a pie from my mums buffet before it was allowed, i found it cool because he was beinig himself, take care dave ,regartd chris.....
Looked it up after Noel Gallagher said that he'd met the girl with the ginger hair: lead singer Dave McCabe wrote this song about ex-gf and NYC make-up artist Valerie Star
yes they were really tight. And to add to that is that instrument quality at Jools is always the best of any television show you almost believe its a studio recording
On TOTP, it may well of sounded like the studio version. Because I think you had to mime singing and playing instruments on there, rather than play live The backing track would of been the studio recording. Totally forgot about this great sounding song.
@@wilfred3751Well from 1991 onwards you could have *Live Vocals* on TOTP but very few performed totally live, but we had Later.. With Jools Holland for that! 👍🏻
Winehouse & Ronson turned it into something you would hear wandering through the Yogurt aisle in Tesco - this here, live & kicking, is the definitive version of the definitive version.
The Nova Twins came to Hastings several years ago and played in a pub as part of our version of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). They were fab and I’m so pleased they are getting recognition.
McCabe:”She told me on Jools Holland's Hootenanny (2006 TV show) that she really liked 'Valerie' and when we played it, I remember her looking at me and smiling.”
Zutons, you guys are from Liverpool! Been listening to Paul and Ringo and others at the White House with Obama. Sorry! I will now listen to you on Spotify. Liverpool and Britain are a guarantee of good musical stuff. Thing is what we get down here in Buenos Aires on the radio is mostly rhe product... Cumbia villera... Shakira, Shakira... Ricky Martin... And then the big oldies over and over. Didn't know of your existence. Anyway I do love Amy and now I see she loved you, so l bet I'll become a fan ;)!!!! Thanks so very much!!!!
I first heard this version by The Zutons. In fact, the first track and performance by this band I saw was "You Will, You Won't" on Jools Holland as well, which featured on a DVD called 'Cool Britania'. Apparently The Zutons didn't get much air play in The States and Latin America. My brother introduced me to this song. I didn't even know Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse had covered it until I heard it on a college radio station in Mexico City that played mostly alternative and indie stuff (still does). The year after Amy's passing, I watched a tribute to her on the Grammys, and the unbearable Bruno Mars showed up to perform "Valerie". That's when I notice Americans' blatant ignorance. They didn't even know it was indeed a cover version by Mark Ronson featuring Amy. I mean, it wasn't even part of Amy discography. As for The Zutons, I don't know if they're still on the road. It seems it was purely a British thing.

So cool...I love coincidences like that.
One of the best British songs of the 00s. Their first album was fantastic.
Yes, it was.
👍
Tired of hanging around was good too
Went to shit after that
This is a great example of how good and how capable this band is. Sterling musicianship top to bottom.

Aha me too!
Abi is beautiful and a great musician as well.
The super song is almost 20 years old???? WhereTF has the time gone? Crazy!!!!!!
Another great band from Liverpool
I love this original version, especially after reading the interview with Valerie. Now I understand the lyrics, makes me feel a little blue 😔
This performance is incredible. I almost thought I was looking at a TOTP video, this sounds almost exactly like the studio version!

Such a superb band. Must listen to the albums again. I used to have them on repeat. Dave McCabe one of the great songwriters of our times ❤

The original and still the best. An absolutely brilliant song!! 👍🏽🎶🎵🎼
Loved it then and still holding up.
great band great song
*Anyone here in 2024? Just seen these sing this at the M&S Arena Liverpool for Jurgen Klopps final Swan song for Liverpool FC* 🙏
No but I’m from the other side of the pond and very jealous- Wish me and my Hubby could have seen it too.
God I miss the early 2000s 😢 so much good music circa 2004-2009
I don't understand why this band didn't make it to stay together. They are kind of unique having a single sax in a pop band. I love it.
This is just gold
Great voice!
Amazing song, so unique - both this and the Amy Winehouse version are fantastic in their own right, but this is such an excellent live performance
I really like Bruno Mars's version too. He did it as a tribute to Amy Winehouse at the American Music Awards.
Such a great vibe!!!
The Nova Twins came to Hastings several years ago and played in a pub as part of our version of Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). They were fab and I’m so pleased they are getting recognition.

"Amy Amy what a terrible shamey, now you're up in heaven with old Patrick Swayze".
The original and best version.

Anyone here on 2050? Man the early 2000s were a trip. Glad we won the revolution. That was a close call!
