I've had questions like this from my family about my studying, and it made me so sad. If anything, I will work harder on my Russian because now is the time for more understanding and acceptance between different people, not less. There is the misunderstanding that if only we understood each other there would be peace in the world 🌍 and we would live happily ever after. The reason why there have been, are and will be conflicts between countries is because of opposing interests. For example, Angela Merkel speaks fluent Russian and Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin speaks fluent German, and yet they never agreed with each other because the interests of Germany 🇩🇪and/or of the EU 🇪🇺 didn’t align with those of Russia 🇷🇺. Therefore, lack of language comprehension was not the issue.
@revilo178 You’re right, but you’re talking about people, us, who study other languages and their culture. For example, the Russian people didn’t start the war, Vladimir. Vladimirovich Putin did. That means that countries (governments) and their elites (ruling classes, corporations) have interests, real or imagined, and they will go to war to defend them. We have no control over them; for example our disastrous war in Iraq 🇮🇶, that was George W. Bush’s decision, not ours.

I wanted to learn Russian because I wanted a window to an extraordinarily rich and complex culture that has always been on the margins of my own western worldview. As far as I'm concerned none of that has changed. If we learned only the things pertaining to cultures that have never been involved in wars, we would learn nothing at all. Nobody - country or person - amounts only to his worst actions. And to judge somebody by his worst moments would only mean missing out on his best. The way I see it, the best way to prevent future conflicts among peoples is by building bridges and learning to see the world from the other's perspective, not by cutting ties and digging blind trenches. I admire Russia and it's culture, although I of course regret the war. And I wish nothing but peace and well being to everybody involved in this conflict.
I remember meeting some Russian female exchange students at my university in the 1970s. They would sing beautiful Russian songs to me in the evening. I remember their kindness and love. That was more than 50 years ago. I will continue studying Russian.
Very true. Language itself is neutral, with a great deal of potential for good. Politicians with bad intentions who weaponise it are the problem. Let's keep studying so we can talk with people all over the world and try to undo that hatred 💪☮
I am only just starting to dabble learn Russian, but don't worry no matter the political situation it won't make me stop. I think the language and people are beautiful. Politics is ugly and personal, but it shouldn't affect the languages someone learns. That's just silly to me. I mean, I am also very seriously studying German, even though my great grandfathers fought against Germany in WW2.

I have just found your channel in the past few days and I am very impressed. You are an excellent teacher. I studied Russian in college in the United States in the1980s and with the current world situation.... for some very odd reason...... it caused me to pull out my old textbooks and then come online to find some UA-cam channels that would help me start all over again with learning Russian as I have not used it in 40 years and have forgotten everything. I'm starting to learn Russian again starting with the alphabet. Russian has a beautiful sound to it. I have many countries in my line. Russian, Polish, Hungarian, German, Lithuanian. And I don't let any bad politics spoil that richness I have inside.

This put many things in perspective that I can’t even talk about it. But some countries have so much freedom, that the understanding of what that freedom takes to maintain, gets lost with a generation that only focus is to deny nature itself. One truth is that the world is control by evil humans, that give us brakes in between.
I am Corsican and not so long ago people in the streets still spoke corsican as their native language. Not anymore... Corsican is very closely related to italian, in its vocabulary and structure, but because we became french in 1769 and because of the fact italy fought alongside germany during WW2 many of our grandparents and parents didn't teach our "historical" language. Today our language is slowly dying and nobody really uses it on a daily basis outside of older people. (even though most people could if they made an effort) it all started because of politics, it all started because some people want you to believe that a language is an ideology

Thank you very much for this video. This is the reason why I started learning Russian. I am Spanish and speak 4 other languages. To speak another language is to possess another soul, as you well say and I have been a long life admirer of the Russian soul and the culture it has produced. My heart bleeds for the Ukranian people but also for the Russian population, a people who has suffered so much throughout the centuries and will now again be set back. Last week I was at a concert in Edinburgh where Shostakovich's Cello Concerto was played. I was glad that the audience expressed their solidarity with the Russian people at the concert. I hope the promotion of understanding between peoples will continue and I'll do what I can to encourage it. I dedicated 40 years of my life to teaching languages and broadening students horizons, so I wish you and all your compatriots all the very best.

Personally I think you are very lucky to be born into & come from such a beautiful culture as Russia. The language itself is absolutely incredible because it can be so precise in the way someone can communicate with another. Currently, I am learning to read, write and speak Russian because, as a writer, I want to know the depths of communication within the framework of this country that greatly values art and education. I am an American who often times wishes I was born into this culture. Although the world is experiencing this major conflict, I will not let it affect me or deter me from learning to speak Russian.

@@jasonjackson5696 Hah! Hah! I once tutored a lazy algebra student, making no progress. I soon resigned in favor of a very young math tutor who was only age 18. I learned he developed a crush on her (he was age 16) and so he put more effort into his studies. But it never lasted long. Some twenty years later, I ran into a relative of his, working as an electrician. He reported to me that this lazy student had dropped out of high school but was faking it on his job resume, claiming that he held a high school diploma even though it was not true.
@@hinchlnt - Maybe if you would’ve made the subject more interesting and relative to life, he may have stayed with you. However, there are some students who cannot relate to or want to understand a subject. I was that kind of student myself, even in college. I have tutored students in a variety of subjects and lecture and what I have learned is interest and progress go hand-in-hand. I have a really good sense of humor and I use it in teaching moments all of the time to break routine, boredom or disinterest.
@Rob Scovell I would definitely fit right in because I read and study a lot about the human condition and what drives thinking and that eventually leads to a the creation of cultures. I intentionally went to a a restaurant in Saint Petersburg called Pushkin, which was the hub of creative thinking from all over Europe. Many different types of brilliant artists would gather at this restaurant, back in the mid-1800s, and feed off of each other and contribute to one another. It was a place of change and the spearhead of thinking outside the box. That influence rippled across all of Russia and is a large part of why the culture is the way it is and why most Russians are educated.
Anna, your words are so deep, it has touched me in great depth. I continue to study and learn the language because it has become my 3rd language regardless of the level I achieve. What an eloquent and good video, thank you for this. The year is 2022 and in these modern contemporary times, if we as a species haven’t figured out we shouldn’t “cancel” an entire culture over the actions of an elite (or radical) few, that’s a sad state of things. Culture and race phobias should be dead but I digress. I think you’re right, that most people didn’t really think to stop learning Russian over this. Didn’t cross people’s minds until insecurity made people say “my decision with Russian” etc. The rational response would be, if you are a student of the language, to take it more seriously. I know that language CAN be a politically charged topic, the examples of Irish and Ukrainian come to mind, but it shouldn’t be politicized for clout or virtue signaling. You don’t have language without culture, which you can’t have without people. Language IS culture and it’s people, it’s not a superficial fashion statement to say “oh I’m learning X language” it’s part of human identity. So anyone who is dropping a language over geopolitical upsets obviously didn’t take to heart what make all languages and cultures so special. It should be normal to not have dumping all things X culture the immediate reaction. I understand that maybe some individuals who are ACTUALLY close to the situation may be venting some raw emotions in dealing with this situation, but they are an exception to a situation where “canceling” a language over these things is, frankly, morally and objectively moronic. Maybe some people want to take a small (hopefully temporary break) from Russian studies while they wrap their head around this. But to see all of these wonderful, smart, kind, and amazing language teachers feel a pressure to apologize or buckle from their work is sad. Sad and telling. I’m in Oregon, the state with one of (if not the) highest populations of Russian speaking people in The States. I really hope they are weathering this, and that no one has any Rusphobia towards them. Many of them are from Ukraine and Belarus as well, but Russian as a lingua franca helps unite their smaller sub cultures into a larger slavic immigrant community. But I don’t exactly trust a person with the outlook of “Oh I’m so disgusted by current events I’m just axing my studies and canceling anything to do with Russia AND I’m going to blast social media with my decision” to have enough critical thought to come across some of these people, hear them speak Russian, and not have an immediate prejudice against them for something that the prejudiced person doesn’t even understand. Learning languages has been a lifelong dream, but something I thought was unobtainable for me until recently. Russian, Arabic, and Mandarin are my white whales so to speak, and Russian is something I started a little under a year ago to be acquainted with in studies. I fell so in love with the fierce familial love common in slavic cultures, and the art and history. My immediate social circles thought it was an eccentric language for me to learn but… maybe I will be a Russian interpreter in the future. I know Oregon has opportunities for it. But I was focused on Spanish and Norwegian mainly, now I find myself regretting not being more entrenched in Russian. But now that’s changing. Thanks to you and a solid group of other content creators, I have a wonderful place to start. All of that long winded thought dump to say: thank YOU, and the rest of the Russian teaching community, for your generosity, intelligence, and admirability for sticking to your own language and culture, showing some pride, and doing life changing work. Thoughts and prayers to all of you caught up in this mess.

Yes I also agree. Maybe the ancients hated the Roman Empire, but it did not stop them from learning Latin because they had no choice. Likewise, the modern nations might not be fond of Great Britain nor the United States, but they still learn English. I studied German in college because of the rich culture and history of German speaking peoples. It had nothing to do with any admiration of Hitler. Likewise, Russian is one of my principal target languages today, but not because I love Putin, because I do not.
You say that because you haven't lived in Russia. I was there some years and could see this coming. Actually I was a huge huge lover of Russian culture and language before living there. But I lost my interest in Russian language much before the current war, when living there I saw the massive massive massive hate they have against the Western world and the massive brainwashing they have, plus the incredibly retrograde mentality. This happens to most lovers of Russia and to many Slavic philology students when they go there, they get terrified. Before people were not aware of what's going on in Russia, and with this war all those things are coming to light. Plus, now it is obvious that within the following decades Russia will be totally isolated from the world (even more than now) and will be very dangerous for any Westerner to go there, therefore people quit learning Russian. The fact that Russian people are so passively accomplice of what Putin is doing doesn't help neither. People who are actually (for real) against Putin are a tiny minority and even them have plenty of veiled hate against the West. I am into arts and literature, and you would expect Russian people who are into those things to be more "open minded", but many of them are pro-Putin and if they are not they are not really against Putin ideas, their opposition is really slight. The person of the video says she doesn't want to feel weird while walking on the street for being Russian, while Ukrainian people are dying and being tortured on the streets because the passive mentality of the Russian population as a whole has led Russia to have such a dictator for many years.

Oh girl thanks for the encouragement. I really do like the Russian language. I am 45 now and it gives me a great brain workout. It is definitely complex but I never seem to feel defeated by the difficulty. Somehow I remain intrigued and keep pushing myself to stay with it. Спасибо

I have Russian on dad's side. I had Russian landlords for a while in my youth and was sad when they left. They were the nicest people I've ever met. It sickens me that politics ruins everything.

I am happy to have started learning Russian last October after several years of thinking about it. And I won’t give up. Now it’s more important than ever to understand each other. If it’s still possible, I would like to visit a language school in Russia this summer. And I hope a solution which is acceptable for both/all parties involved in this already long lasting conflict will soon be negotiated. Om shanti❤️ P.S. I feel sad that ignorant people judge you and others for speaking Russian. As you mentioned, throughout history, Russian-speaking people have given us many beautiful things---poetry, literature, dance, music, etc. I will NEVER give up learning Russian because I deeply appreciate my Russian-speaking friends ---past and present and also, cultural greats from the Russian speaking world. I studied Russian in college in the United States in the1980s and with the current world situation.... for some very odd reason...... it caused me to pull out my old textbooks and then come online to find some UA-cam channels that would help me start all over again with learning Russian as I have not used it in 40 years and have forgotten everything. I'm starting to learn Russian again starting with the alphabet. Russian has a beautiful sound to it. I have many countries in my line. Russian, Polish, Hungarian, German, Lithuanian. And I don't let any bad politics spoil that richness I have inside.

This put many things in perspective that I can’t even talk about it. But some countries have so much freedom, that the understanding of what that freedom takes to maintain, gets lost with a generation that only focus is to deny nature itself. One truth is that the world is control by evil humans, that give us brakes in between.
I am Corsican and not so long ago people in the streets still spoke corsican as their native language. Not anymore... Corsican is very closely related to italian, in its vocabulary and structure, but because we became french in 1769 and because of the fact italy fought alongside germany during WW2 many of our grandparents and parents didn't teach our "historical" language. Today our language is slowly dying and nobody really uses it on a daily basis outside of older people. (even though most people could if they made an effort) it all started because of politics, it all started because some people want you to believe that a language is an ideology

Great thoughts, extremely grounded. Language is experiential, not based on abstractions or arbitrary categorizations on a map. I've been following the responses by many Russian teachers to these ongoing events, and this is the one that has resonated most with me so far.

Thank you very much for this video. This is the reason why I started learning Russian. I am Spanish and speak 4 other languages. To speak another language is to possess another soul, as you well say and I have been a long life admirer of the Russian soul and the culture it has produced. My heart bleeds for the Ukranian people but also for the Russian population, a people who has suffered so much throughout the centuries and will now again be set back. Last week I was at a concert in Edinburgh where Shostakovich's Cello Concerto was played. I was glad that the audience expressed their solidarity with the Russian people at the concert. I hope the promotion of understanding between peoples will continue and I'll do what I can to encourage it. I dedicated 40 years of my life to teaching languages and broadening students horizons, so I wish you and all your compatriots all the very best.

Personally I think you are very lucky to be born into & come from such a beautiful culture as Russia. The language itself is absolutely incredible because it can be so precise in the way someone can communicate with another.
Currently, I am learning to read, write and speak Russian because, as a writer, I want to know the depths of communication within the framework of this country that greatly values art and education. I am an American who often times wishes I was born into this culture.
Although the world is experiencing this major conflict, I will not let it affect me or deter me from learning to speak Russian.

@@jasonjackson5696 Hah! Hah! I once tutored a lazy algebra student, making no progress. I soon resigned in favor of a very young math tutor who was only age 18. I learned he developed a crush on her (he was age 16) and so he put more effort into his studies. But it never lasted long. Some twenty years later, I ran into a relative of his, working as an electrician. He reported to me that this lazy student had dropped out of high school but was faking it on his job resume, claiming that he held a high school diploma even though it was not true.
@@hinchlnt - Maybe if you would’ve made the subject more interesting and relative to life, he may have stayed with you. However, there are some students who cannot relate to or want to understand a subject. I was that kind of student myself, even in college.
I have tutored students in a variety of subjects and lecture and what I have learned is interest and progress go hand-in-hand. I have a really good sense of humor and I use it in teaching moments all of the time to break routine, boredom or disinterest.
@Rob Scovell I would definitely fit right in because I read and study a lot about the human condition and what drives thinking and that eventually leads to a the creation of cultures. I intentionally went to a a restaurant in Saint Petersburg called Pushkin, which was the hub of creative thinking from all over Europe. Many different types of brilliant artists would gather at this restaurant, back in the mid-1800s, and feed off of each other and contribute to one another. It was a place of change and the spearhead of thinking outside the box. That influence rippled across all of Russia and is a large part of why the culture is the way it is and why most Russians are educated.
I will never stop learning Russian language.

The year is 2022 and in these modern contemporary times, if we as a species haven’t figured out we shouldn’t “cancel” an entire culture over the actions of an elite (or radical) few, that’s a sad state of things. Culture and race phobias should be dead but I digress.
I think you’re right, that most people didn’t really think to stop learning Russian over this. Didn’t cross people’s minds until insecurity made people say “my decision with Russian” etc. The rational response would be, if you are a student of the language, to take it more seriously. I know that language CAN be a politically charged topic, the examples of Irish and Ukrainian come to mind, but it shouldn’t be politicized for clout or virtue signaling. You don’t have language without culture, which you can’t have without people. Language IS culture and it’s people, it’s not a superficial fashion statement to say “oh I’m learning X language” it’s part of human identity. So anyone who is dropping a language over geopolitical upsets obviously didn’t take to heart what make all languages and cultures so special. It should be normal to not have dumping all things X culture the immediate reaction.
I understand that maybe some individuals who are ACTUALLY close to the situation may be venting some raw emotions in dealing with this situation, but they are an exception to a situation where “canceling” a language over these things is, frankly, morally and objectively moronic. Maybe some people want to take a small (hopefully temporary break) from Russian studies while they wrap their head around this. But to see all of these wonderful, smart, kind, and amazing language teachers feel a pressure to apologize or buckle from their work is sad. Sad and telling.
I’m in Oregon, the state with one of (if not the) highest populations of Russian speaking people in The States. I really hope they are weathering this, and that no one has any Rusphobia towards them. Many of them are from Ukraine and Belarus as well, but Russian as a lingua franca helps unite their smaller sub cultures into a larger slavic immigrant community. But I don’t exactly trust a person with the outlook of “Oh I’m so disgusted by current events I’m just axing my studies and canceling anything to do with Russia AND I’m going to blast social media with my decision” to have enough critical thought to come across some of these people, hear them speak Russian, and not have an immediate prejudice against them for something that the prejudiced person doesn’t even understand.
Learning languages has been a lifelong dream, but something I thought was unobtainable for me until recently. Russian, Arabic, and Mandarin are my white whales so to speak, and Russian is something I started a little under a year ago to be acquainted with in studies. I fell so in love with the fierce familial love common in slavic cultures, and the art and history. My immediate social circles thought it was an eccentric language for me to learn but… maybe I will be a Russian interpreter in the future. I know Oregon has opportunities for it. But I was focused on Spanish and Norwegian mainly, now I find myself regretting not being more entrenched in Russian. But now that’s changing. Thanks to you and a solid group of other content creators, I have a wonderful place to start.
All of that long winded thought dump to say: thank YOU, and the rest of the Russian teaching community, for your generosity, intelligence, and admirability for sticking to your own language and culture, showing some pride, and doing life changing work.
Thoughts and prayers to all of you caught up in this mess.
As human civilization continues to develop, I pray and hope that people of the world will someday soon learn to respect, admire, and enjoy the beauty of different languages/cultures in a harmonious and peaceful universe. Yes I also agree. Maybe the ancients hated the Roman Empire, but it did not stop them from learning Latin because they had no choice. Likewise, the modern nations might not be fond of Great Britain nor the United States, but they still learn English. I studied German in college because of the rich culture and history of German speaking peoples. It had nothing to do with any admiration of Hitler. Likewise, Russian is one of my principal target languages today, but not because I love Putin, because I do not.

You say that because you haven't lived in Russia. I was there some years and could see this coming. Actually I was a huge huge lover of Russian culture and language before living there. But I lost my interest in Russian language much before the current war, when living there I saw the massive massive massive hate they have against the Western world and the massive brainwashing they have, plus the incredibly retrograde mentality. This happens to most lovers of Russia and to many Slavic philology students when they go there, they get terrified. Before people were not aware of what's going on in Russia, and with this war all those things are coming to light. Plus, now it is obvious that within the following decades Russia will be totally isolated from the world (even more than now) and will be very dangerous for any Westerner to go there, therefore people quit learning Russian. The fact that Russian people are so passively accomplice of what Putin is doing doesn't help neither. People who are actually (for real) against Putin are a tiny minority and even them have plenty of veiled hate against the West. I am into arts and literature, and you would expect Russian people who are into those things to be more "open minded", but many of them are pro-Putin and if they are not they are not really against Putin ideas, their opposition is really slight. The person of the video says she doesn't want to feel weird while walking on the street for being Russian, while Ukrainian people are dying and being tortured on the streets because the passive mentality of the Russian population as a whole has led Russia to have such a dictator for many years.

I have Russian on dad's side. I had Russian landlords for a while in my youth and was sad when they left. They were the nicest people I've ever met. It sickens me that politics ruins everything.

I am happy to have started learning Russian last October after several years of thinking about it. And I won’t give up. Now it’s more important than ever to understand each other. If it’s still possible, I would like to visit a language school in Russia this summer.
And I hope a solution which is acceptable for both/all parties involved in this already long lasting conflict will soon be negotiated.

Dear Teacher Anna Cher, Thank you for your video. I'm a beginner in Russian but I have been surrounded by Russian and Ukranian people and culture for many years in the U.S . I feel sad that ignorant people judge you and others for speaking Russian. As you mentioned, throughout history, Russian-speaking people have given us many beautiful things---poetry, literature, dance, music, etc.
I will NEVER give up learning Russian because I deeply appreciate my Russian-speaking friends ---past and present and also, cultural greats from the Russian speaking world. I hope one day that my Russian is very good enough to be able to sing my favorite songs with feeling and joy.
