Home Free's gorgeous new cover of Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms," with a stunningly pure arrangement from Club For Five. The original song has been an integral part of my musical experience from a very young age, so I'm quite pleased to see that Home Free did the original justice with their cover ❤
Mmmmmmm = nightmare for sheet music .
When a world class bass make the 😯 face you know it’s… you know pretty okay.
Just like you, in england i used to listen to dire straits version of this on the way to soccer with my dad. Some of my earliest memories are of this song, and sultans of swing but most importantly local hero as im a Newcastle fan. they did something i didn’t think anyone could do with it, and add another level of emotion. Just purely beautiful. I’m lost for words and so emotional right now! Brings back memories

If I were to imagine what the Choir at Heavens Gates sounds like ...This is it!
At a Bash, Tim told me he called up Club for Five to talk about their arrangement and they just gave it to him. He said he tweaked it some. This is one of the things I love about most Acappella groups. They are so generous about sharing. Whether it's arrangements or learning new techniques (as Tim did with several bass singers).
Very Interesting.
That's one of my biggest reasons why I love Acapella music, besides the incredible voices. They all seem like such a tight knit group. They are supportive of each other. Not really trying to 1up each other.
I wish more groups did this, honestly. Sure, it might not be the most creative thing ever, but I don't always want immense creativity. Sometimes I think it's really cool just to hear different voices perform pieces I already know and love.
No
Tuukka Haapaniemi is great bass singer for the group Club For Five, Peter could probably check some of their cover like Sassy
I love the in depth analysis and reaction. You're almost like the male bass version of Charismatic Voice.
That's why I subscribe and support both!
I came here right after watching the Charismatic Voice! The only difference I see is he doesn't fan out as much... lol
Adam Chance explained in the bts, that this has been a favorite song of his since middle school. I’m so thankful that HF covered this hauntingly, beautiful song! This is my favorite cover on LOTF! Phenomenal!
This was such a wonderful tribute for Veteran's Day, I love the haunting, delicate delivery.
This song also holds special meaning to me. My father passed away 37 years ago when I was 15. Dire Sraits was his all time favourite band and we played this song at his funeral.
i watched another reaction to this video and was NOT going to listen to any others because of the way the other reaction affected me. I was a blubbering mess.
I'm so glad I decided to watch your reaction and analysis. I totally agree with you that it would have had more impact if they didn't use reverb when they said "But we have just one world". That would have sounded way better.
When you closed your eyes at the beginning and were feeling the music wash over you, I started to cry because I knew you would react to this song respectfully and beautifully. And you did. I love watching your reactions.
The lighting (bright from the windows behind, ghostly/translucent when Chance & Tim are standing in front of the windows) adds a lot to the etherial feel. At that Ab point you noted, it sounds as if there is a giant cathedral organ effect. Wow! And great explanation, Peter. Thank you.
Great reaction! I agree that Home Free did this justice and did it the right way. There's power in the breathy, almost vulnerable tone in the verses. The background harmonies were superb. They have a good sense of which songs they can goof around and play with, and which ones to take special care of. And once again Home Free has sent out an important message that many people didn't know they needed. The way Home Free shows their patriotism, and approaches sensitive social issues is to be commended. They have again opened up a conversation across the globe.
I've been thinking about this a lot since it came out and then your review helped me coalesce some thoughts. Knopfler's guitar is so iconic to this song that I didn't recognize the opening bars until Tim started singing. The soft, almost mumbled, lyrics of the original are a prayer by a weary warrior.
Home Free makes the prayer a hymn.
So NICE to hear someone sing the praises of Tuukka!!!! So many people don't know him... their acapella is limited to HF and VP...which is cool, really cool, but there are so many WONDERFUL acapella groups out there.... although Club for Five isn't always acapella.
Thank you for your reaction to this new rendition of one of my favorite songs!
Another song where Tim Foust sings the opening (solo for the first verse) is an older Home Free called "What We Ain't Got". There's a sort of follow-up narrative about that song on a live video called "Home Free Oxygen". Tim Foust also does some beautiful duets with Peter Hollens - their "Green Sleeves" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (both on Peter Hollens channel) are gorgeous as are Tim's duets with Chris Rupp (on Chris Rupp's channel).
You didn't mention it, but I saw your pleased smile when they text painted "starlight" in such a divine way.
I was thinking there was something I wanted different in the "we only have one world" part and you explained what it was.
Great reaction as always, Peter! Thank you! 🥰🙏
This song hit me right in the heart. As a veteran, I know that we should all be moved by this song.
If you notice, when Tim and Adam were standing in front of the window, they appear somewhat ghostly, as if to seem that they were some of those that did not make it.
The background harmonies sound like a pipe organ to me. Beautiful!
Thanks for your detailed analysis. I appreciate reactions from singers.
I've seen them in concert several times. Tim singing Ring of Fire..you feel it in your stomach!! Adam also does a solo for a solid 10 mins doing what he does..they are all amazing!
I love Tim's lower voice and the way it is so smooth, rich and clean. Not sure where this was shot, but a lot of the cemetery shots look a lot like the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Galt, CA. This place holds a lot of meaning and emotions for me as my grandfather, who was a Navy man commissioned on the battleship USS Missouri {BB-63} during WW II which was known as the surrender site of the Empire of Japan, is buried in this cemetery. This song is very haunting for me.
My pet peeve is reactors who don't know THE ORIGINAL SONG. Dire Straits has been with me since my childhood, I love them - especially this song. And Tuukka, ah! ❤ This is such a beatiful version and I looove you for knowing the background of it. 🤗
Loved your reaction to this haunting beautiful song. It is a pleasure to hear your commentary on the various aspects of voice, arrangement and techniques. I learn something new each time you do a reaction. Thank you for reacting to this one. It is certainly a beautiful cover of an equally beautiful original.
Haunting, Mesmerizing, Magical and a Beautiful Masterpice.
This is an amazing teaching experience for us to understand how music is used to create a sense of the emotion and words se we can feel it too
Is it because Tim's natural speaking voice is so low that
he never sounds forced whilst going very low. Enjoy the
your detailed reactions. Have you done "Snowglobe"?
Great to hear your perspective as a bass....really interesting
Another awesome reaction, Peter! I love your musical knowledge - I've sung barbershop for 30 years, and terms like "wall of sound" are definitely in our vocabulary. I love this song, and I'm glad they did a version of this haunting song.
Hello Dorothy how are you doing today?
Thank you for your reaction to Home Free and their take on this song. I appreciate you doing the breakdown of the song. It give us more of an insight into how the guys put the song together.
I love when they do 5-part harmony like they were able to do in the interludes. It seems to give a much bigger feel than just 4 parts.
This song gives me chills! The harmonies are superb! I love your reactions, I feel I learn so much! Thank you.
I absolutely love your reactions ❣ ❤ ♥
Home Free!!! They can’t be beat! Beautifully haunting!
Beautiful, and I'm going to have to stop crying so I can type anywhere close to correctly. As always, wonderful analysis and in-depth knowledge of the song. I really enjoy hearing your perspective, and learning about the various vocal techniques. Bravo to Club For Five and Home Free for the beautiful rendition, and to you for adding a unique depth to it with your analysis and commentary. ❤
What a sweet treat surprise to have a second reaction from you this week! And what a beautiful piece from Home Free.It all left me speechless. All I can say is thank you for taking time out of your crazy schedule to share this with us.
It's a grind but I love being able to do it, and I'm glad people like you appreciate it :)
I agree, this is one of my favorite chill and goose bump inducing Dire Straits songs! Mark Knopfler's guitar is just plain haunting
You have a wonderful voice. Love it when you sing along. Really appreciate your professional perspective.. just subscribed!
This was so great, I love your breakdowns! Thanks for the reaction Peter!
This young sir is just a Phenomenal rendition by these guys. Adam and Tim were just awesome!!! Love the whole arrangement by all these guys. Thank you for your reaction!!!
This is such a moving arrangement, I really enjoyed this so much and so glad that Club for shared this arrangements. I love how choral it gets, it's so beautiful
i did hear it live, and it was soft.
Totally agree with your suggestion they could have not echoed the "one world". Great reaction. I had never heard this song before. It is beautiful and Home Free did a fabulous Job - I even listened to the original.
Oh I was hoping you'd react to this one. I can listen to this for hours. The harmony has me enthralled and I love it when Adam sings for a change. Great listening to your analysis and appreciation for talent (composition, performance and production). I would just add that I really liked the video concept as well.
I've waited for reactors with music background to analyze this wonderful piece since the premier came out. I enjoy this video. Thank you for the reaction. 💙
Love your analysis as always, keep on👑
I absolutely love this cover but after listening to your comments, I do like your idea of dropping out the echo on world. I can hear it in my head and omg even more impact. Love your in-depth reactions.
Smashing the👍🏼 and leaving a comment for the algorithm gods.
The thing I love about it is how haunting it is.....
This song is 🔥, thank you for your review & reaction 😀
An interesting song for you take to take a look at, is Home Free's cover of "Elvira". The OG Oak Ridge Boys are featured. There might be some interesting things you could tell us about aging and how that effects the singing voice. Tim and Richard Sterban of the Oaks have a nice back-and-forth on the "oom pappa mow mow". This performance was arranged by Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay. So, there is definitely a heavy bass influence.
Couldn’t wait for your reaction to this 😬
Wonderful! 💗
Hello Walker how are you doing today?
Thanks for telling us about Club for Five. I wasn't familiar with them.
I was really hoping you critiqued this one. I heard the audio of it quite a while back and thought you'd dig it.
I first heard this song from a group called Celtic Thunder but the lead is a tenor. So the first time I heard Home Frees version, it was very different despite being also the same. Home Free always does fantastic
Love all the content Peter! So happy I found this channel, makes me want get into acappela, and learn how to project my voice in a better way!
Fantastic!
You can always tell when Tim and Chance go low. Lol at their hands
Thanks for the singing breakdown. Very interesting. Also, thanks for your reaction.
Adam did do some sound effects at the end you would hear the whistling wind sound that is Adam doing that
Hello Patricia..
Thank you for a beautiful reaction. I have been listening to your reactions for while now (and subscribed). Take a look/listen to some of the other hymns and “almost” hymns they do - How Great Thou Art is the best example I can think of - Adam Rupp is usually singing and not beatboxing in those, just like here. Adam starts the “it is well…” of the second hymn, so you get to hear him sing finally. He is a tenor.
I absolutely love this song and Home Free's stunningly beautiful cover. Thank you for an amazing reaction and analysis for us laymen. I'm going to go right now and listen to the original. (Please react to Tim Foust and Austin Brown cover of "My Maria" and HF's "Mary, Did You Know?")
Wonderful cover for an amazing Mark Knophler composition who wrote it I believe for the Falklands war. He writes such beautiful music and lyrics and a guitar god.
Tim enunciates....i like the clarity....he doesn't sacrifice diction for art..... in high school the low b was the extent of my range......no one else in the choir could get to the "c" ...the director would often have me ad lib the low notes in the 100 voice choir....my lone voice really didn't mar the arrangement but just added some fullness
Would love to hear your reaction to The Tenors ~ Who wants to live forever ❤
I hear the vibrations of Tim's voice in a tactile way. Deep basses have that effect especially if the vocalist can sing them relaxed way.
Love the videos
I've been going through a Pentatonix/Home Free video binge and came across a couple of your analysis videos. Interesting to hear someone who is knowledgeable break down something I just enjoy as a listener (a base voice). When I was a kid a group - the Oak Ridge Boys - had a huge hit with a song called Elvira. I'd be interested to know how you think the base singer in that group compares to some of these amazing singers of today. The best version would be their 1981 recording the on they had the hit with - they also did a "40 years later" version and a version with Home Free which is a lot of fun.
amazing thanks!
I’m loving your channel! I thoroughly enjoy your analysis.
I know I had kids. But I think I’m part dude.
Since my hand is messed up, I decided to work on some voice stuff. Turns out I can now get down to D#2 with only a little force down. But I can growl an E1.
That’s NUTS for a female. I need to go to a OB/GYN and check under my hood. Lol
Romeo and Juliet, and Brothers In Arms are two the best ever. IMO. HF did more than a good rendition of this deep, moving entreaty against making war.
Great reaction...love Home Free. Another amazing artist to react to is Marcelito Pomoy singing The Prayer on the Wishbus. He is amazing. You won’t believe what you are hearing. No vocal training. Raised himself on the street from the age of seven. He is a kind, humble and very talented young man. Please....and thank you. Enjoy! 👍
Your commentary is like attending a university music lecture. You touch your nose too much. Did you have braces. You move from slough to straight back. I'm glad I watched. Liked.
ADAM did the wind sound at the start and end, with the flag waving in the breeze, but sang the rest, No other sounds from him.
5 voices. Adam Rup (beatboxer) is singing on this one.
Hi. Sorry I have been double timing bass appreciation with a tenor of all things. I have been more involved with looking at the creation of music and lyrics for emotional content examination lately than with pure voice production.
Unusual for them to run with 5 part harmonies and no beatboxing.
There was a funny short they put out that shows Tim's big white dog laying right behind where Chance is during the shoot.
I think this version is better than Mark Knopfler's original. This one makes me tear up every single time I hear it. I think you might have missed a part at the end as you had your eyes closed during the phrase "every man has to die". Tim is silhouetted against the window at that moment. It's very ethereal and powerful. Maybe you've watched it again, but in case you hadn't I wanted to call it to your attention.
When is your version Peter!
Dire Straits is from Australia, not England
I've listened to all three versions, in my opinion, Home Free sang it best. Tim to me is a better base singer. Love them, and this version of the song.
Have you ever been told you look like the actor that plays Dexter?
Great reaction dude. not sure if it's your cup of tea, but I'd love to hear your reaction of Tim's bass in Honey I'm Good , Home Free cover of of Andy Grammars song. if nothing it's a great fun video
Tim can hit at least 5 octaves
I always thought I was a bass but my friends all tell me that I’m lower than Barry White; is there a male voice that is lower than bass??
Basso profundo or contrabass.
I have to say, even though I am here for your excellent observations and analysis, it is particularly hard to hear this song stopped/started/chopped up. It pretty much is a prayer and somehow feels not proper to dissect it but rather we should just bathe in the sonic experience. I know it is not rational but it is how I feel.
The initial key is actually G#2, descending into a D2 at the lowest. That's about as low as I can go full chest, which is PATENTLY obvious if you ever hear me sing. I can go subharmonic down to about a D1, but that is the current subfloor of my register. Granted, I am 100% untrained.
Is this referring to suns or sons?
G1 chest from Tim ???
You need to let them sing we dont need you to let us no how smart you are by telling us something ever time thay do something
I don't have the openness in my lower register, my voice almost always feels constricted and only ever feels open at the bottom when I'm fully cleared out (or have a cold lol). Is there something wrong? I feel like my voice is naturally placed at a Bass 1 day-to-day, but I can go as low if not lower than Tim if my throat is open and fully relaxed like it's supposed to. My natural voice doesn't feel healthy but when I'm sick or have my voice cleared out really well it feels really healthy... Do I have a sinus problem or way higher blockage than normal?
BRUH 7:53
I listened to Club for five's version but the harmonies were too loud and "rushed" and they didn't give the bass any space at all. I prefer Home Free's version.
Can you react to home free ring of fire
i'm like 90% sure his Ab/G#s were fried. as the champ of chest-fry i assumed you'd share the opinion lol
and the ones mixed into the harmony were caked in effects so they could have been growl tbh because they were very meaty
Silly moment here. My daughter says I like to hear you speak the same way she likes Markiplier. In conversational speech y'all do sound very much alike. Pretty sharp for a 15 yr old girl that can't sing a lick.
Can you react to d-low beatbox?!?!?
I loveee watching beatboxers so maybe I'll do that sometime soon 👀
@@PeterBarber he does a lot of throat bass and inward bass that I think your going to love
So is it “worlds” and “suns” or “worlds” and “sons”? Given the title, it could be “sons”
Always enjoy your breakdown reactions. For a pure bass singer who holds the Guinness World Record for the lowest recorded frequency, 0.189hz and an official 10 octave vocal range which he can unoffically add two more octaves to, I'd like to see your reaction to Tim Storms, your choice of his songs or interviews!
Heres a good link; ua-cam.com/video/xtAltg0ZIrY/v-deo.html
I wonder if they used echoboy effect for this song. I use it a bit and sounds like that
Mmm is not a vowel...
Ok, great rendition, however.. they miss the most important piece that makes this song .. The guitar in the original is a voice on it's own, for me.. they needed to bring the guitar part more to the foreground.
The guitar is missing.. the voice of the guitar is missing... it answers every line in the verses.. listen to the original... The guitar needs a solo voice, not background harmony....
To me the guitar has always been the "soldiers" voice..... answering Mark's verses
Other than that.. great cover.. exceptional artist...
again my interpretation...
Thank you for your interpretation -- I fully agree that the guitar adds a special element to the original
I thumbed down because you won't let them sing. Stop pausing.
Too much talking, maybe?
