Home Free's gorgeous new cover of Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms," with a stunningly pure arrangement from Club For Five. The original song has been an integral part of my musical experience from a very young age, so I'm quite pleased to see that Home Free did the original justice with their cover ❤
Just like you, in england i used to listen to dire straits version of this on the way to soccer with my dad. Some of my earliest memories are of this song, and sultans of swing but most importantly local hero as im a Newcastle fan. they did something i didn’t think anyone could do with it, and add another level of emotion. Just purely beautiful. I’m lost for words and so emotional right now! Brings back memories
At a Bash, Tim told me he called up Club for Five to talk about their arrangement and they just gave it to him. He said he tweaked it some. This is one of the things I love about most Acappella groups. They are so generous about sharing. Whether it's arrangements or learning new techniques (as Tim did with several bass singers).
That's one of my biggest reasons why I love Acapella music, besides the incredible voices. They all seem like such a tight knit group. They are supportive of each other. Not really trying to 1up each other.
I wish more groups did this, honestly. Sure, it might not be the most creative thing ever, but I don't always want immense creativity. Sometimes I think it's really cool just to hear different voices perform pieces I already know and love.
Great critique! We cried when hearing this, not only for their wondrous talent and arrangement, but for my Air-force dad who gave his life for a young family.
In my opinion, Home Free always respects the music and stays true to the intent and spirit of the song. So true here, and in many other covers that they have done.
This song also holds special meaning to me. My father passed away 37 years ago when I was 15. Dire Sraits was his all time favourite band and we played this song at his funeral. i watched another reaction to this video and was NOT going to listen to any others because of the way the other reaction affected me. I was a blubbering mess. I'm so glad I decided to watch your reaction and analysis. I totally agree with you that it would have had more impact if they didn't use reverb when they said "But we have just one world". That would have sounded way better. When you closed your eyes at the beginning and were feeling the music wash over you, I started to cry because I knew you would react to this song respectfully and beautifully. And you did. I love watching your reactions.
Adam Chance explained in the bts, that this has been a favorite song of his since middle school. I’m so thankful that HF covered this hauntingly, beautiful song! This is my favorite cover on LOTF! Phenomenal!
My pet peeve is reactors who don't know THE ORIGINAL SONG. Dire Straits has been with me since my childhood, I love them - especially this song. And Tuukka, ah! ❤ This is such a beatiful version and I looove you for knowing the background of it. 🤗
Great reaction! I agree that Home Free did this justice and did it the right way. There's power in the breathy, almost vulnerable tone in the verses. The background harmonies were superb. They have a good sense of which songs they can goof around and play with, and which ones to take special care of. And once again Home Free has sent out an important message that many people didn't know they needed. The way Home Free shows their patriotism, and approaches sensitive social issues is to be commended. They have again opened up a conversation across the globe.
It's one of the guys best songs. I'm a big fan of Home Free. Unfortunately, I only understand part of your comment because I don't really speak English, but I'm always learning new things. Greetings from Switzerland (translated from google)
As a music geek and also a veteran of two wars, I commend you on your excellent analysis of the composition. More so, I admire the reverence you seem to hold for message. I haven't seen much of that in most other reactions. Thank you!
The lighting (bright from the windows behind, ghostly/translucent when Chance & Tim are standing in front of the windows) adds a lot to the etherial feel. At that Ab point you noted, it sounds as if there is a giant cathedral organ effect. Wow! And great explanation, Peter. Thank you.
I've been thinking about this a lot since it came out and then your review helped me coalesce some thoughts. Knopfler's guitar is so iconic to this song that I didn't recognize the opening bars until Tim started singing. The soft, almost mumbled, lyrics of the original are a prayer by a weary warrior. Home Free makes the prayer a hymn.
You didn't mention it, but I saw your pleased smile when they text painted "starlight" in such a divine way. I was thinking there was something I wanted different in the "we only have one world" part and you explained what it was. Great reaction as always, Peter! Thank you! 🥰🙏
Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥
Love this song, another masterpiece from HF. Tim and Chance's voices are phenomenal. Tim's super deep bass sends goosebumps down my spine. A very emotional song that hasn't lost any of its relevance. These guys did a damn good job, wow! Like your detailed reaction, thanks!
Ethereal. Haunting. Gut wrenching. Soul stirring. Angelic. The only thing missing was the seraphic choir backing them up. Excuse me while I track down my soul and stuff it back into my body...
I appreciate how you drew attention to the "word painting". It's a detail that arrangers shouldn't forget to utilize. I wouldn't have noticed it when casually listening; but, from now on, I'll be struck by it every time I listen to this arrangement. Thank you.
I'm one of Tim's patrons & he sent a Patreon email today with a link to the video. In the email, he commented, "Chris Chatham and I adapted an arrangement by Susanna Hietala and Jouni Kannisto of Club for Five." Enjoyed your breakdown of the harmonies, etc.
I've seen them in concert several times. Tim singing Ring of Fire..you feel it in your stomach!! Adam also does a solo for a solid 10 mins doing what he does..they are all amazing!
I love Tim's lower voice and the way it is so smooth, rich and clean. Not sure where this was shot, but a lot of the cemetery shots look a lot like the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Galt, CA. This place holds a lot of meaning and emotions for me as my grandfather, who was a Navy man commissioned on the battleship USS Missouri {BB-63} during WW II which was known as the surrender site of the Empire of Japan, is buried in this cemetery. This song is very haunting for me.
I loved this. It’s so hauntingly beautiful. I loved the black and white film too. Tim and Chance looked ghost like in the windows. Tim’s lows were beautiful. It’s just a stunning rendition. Good reaction Peter.
Of all the many reaction videos I have watched, by professional singers and vocal coaches, Peter Barber's analyses are by far the best. He knows his business. When he pauses, it is a teaching moment, a learning experience. Thank you.
So NICE to hear someone sing the praises of Tuukka!!!! So many people don't know him... their acapella is limited to HF and VP...which is cool, really cool, but there are so many WONDERFUL acapella groups out there.... although Club for Five isn't always acapella.
Loved your reaction to this haunting beautiful song. It is a pleasure to hear your commentary on the various aspects of voice, arrangement and techniques. I learn something new each time you do a reaction. Thank you for reacting to this one. It is certainly a beautiful cover of an equally beautiful original.
Thank you so much for name-checking Club For Five. I'd been a bit busy when I first listened to this video, and hadn't gone and listened to the original. Thanks to you, I've done so and am blown away!
Is it because Tim's natural speaking voice is so low that he never sounds forced whilst going very low. Enjoy the your detailed reactions. Have you done "Snowglobe"?
Another awesome reaction, Peter! I love your musical knowledge - I've sung barbershop for 30 years, and terms like "wall of sound" are definitely in our vocabulary. I love this song, and I'm glad they did a version of this haunting song.
Thank you for your reaction to Home Free and their take on this song. I appreciate you doing the breakdown of the song. It give us more of an insight into how the guys put the song together.
If you notice, when Tim and Adam were standing in front of the window, they appear somewhat ghostly, as if to seem that they were some of those that did not make it.
Love your reactions brother. I appreciate other reactors, but it’s a breath of fresh air to watch your reactions/breakdowns from someone with the experience and knowledge you have. Keep it up man!
I have sung with many chorale groups and even some barbershop....but I learn something new every time I watch one of your reactions. I have been waiting for you to do this. As the daughter of a WW2 vet and the mother of a Marine who fought in Iraq, this song says on my heartstrings. Those last two note....sound just like a pipe organ.
Another song where Tim Foust sings the opening (solo for the first verse) is an older Home Free called "What We Ain't Got". There's a sort of follow-up narrative about that song on a live video called "Home Free Oxygen". Tim Foust also does some beautiful duets with Peter Hollens - their "Green Sleeves" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (both on Peter Hollens channel) are gorgeous as are Tim's duets with Chris Rupp (on Chris Rupp's channel).
I've heard all three versions of this song that you mentioned. Dire Strait, Club for Five and now Home Free. They are all beautiful. However, Home Free's version affected me the most. Bass adds so much to this song that you don't get in the Original Dire Strait version I grew up with. I love Tuukka's voice and people should definitely check him and C45 out, but in this song he is very gravelly, almost breaking? Tim's smooth tones through most of the verses he sings just adds so much emotion. And not enough can be said about the supporting cast and the difference between just singing a song and feeling the song you're singing. Great song, great cover of it, and a great reaction.
I've also listened to all 3 many times and I agree with you. I think some people get all caught up in How deep a bass sings and don't pay enough attention to the tone.
I agree have listened to all three and Tim's smoother tones throughout add that very haunting sound. C45s version is very good and I like it more than the original
This young sir is just a Phenomenal rendition by these guys. Adam and Tim were just awesome!!! Love the whole arrangement by all these guys. Thank you for your reaction!!!
Thank you for your reaction & analysis. I have always loved this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural bass was awesome, also Chance's solos & so were all the guys doing 5 part harmonies.
Beautiful, and I'm going to have to stop crying so I can type anywhere close to correctly. As always, wonderful analysis and in-depth knowledge of the song. I really enjoy hearing your perspective, and learning about the various vocal techniques. Bravo to Club For Five and Home Free for the beautiful rendition, and to you for adding a unique depth to it with your analysis and commentary. ❤
What a sweet treat surprise to have a second reaction from you this week! And what a beautiful piece from Home Free.It all left me speechless. All I can say is thank you for taking time out of your crazy schedule to share this with us.
I absolutely love this cover but after listening to your comments, I do like your idea of dropping out the echo on world. I can hear it in my head and omg even more impact. Love your in-depth reactions.
I've waited for reactors with music background to analyze this wonderful piece since the premier came out. I enjoy this video. Thank you for the reaction. 💙
Thank you Peter! This is hauntingly beautiful and I love everything about it from the beauty of their voices to the cinematography. Wondering if the sound of the wind in a couple of places ( I think shortly after the start of the intro and again towards the end ) is a sound effect by Adam layered in? It's really cool! I appreciate your detailed analysis! Loving Home Free so much! Phenomenally talented gentlemen!
It's nice to hear a fellow bass singer's perspective on this group. I have zero knowledge of my own bass vocals, so I got a good education today! Thanks buddy
Totally agree with your suggestion they could have not echoed the "one world". Great reaction. I had never heard this song before. It is beautiful and Home Free did a fabulous Job - I even listened to the original.
This is such a moving arrangement, I really enjoyed this so much and so glad that Club for shared this arrangements. I love how choral it gets, it's so beautiful
Oh I was hoping you'd react to this one. I can listen to this for hours. The harmony has me enthralled and I love it when Adam sings for a change. Great listening to your analysis and appreciation for talent (composition, performance and production). I would just add that I really liked the video concept as well.
If I remember rightly the original is in G#m as well. My dad gave me his old stereo complete with turntable when I was 9 or 10, along with the Brothers in Arms album on vinyl. I listened to that a lot. It was a big part in me picking up the guitar.
I first heard this song from a group called Celtic Thunder but the lead is a tenor. So the first time I heard Home Frees version, it was very different despite being also the same. Home Free always does fantastic
An interesting song for you take to take a look at, is Home Free's cover of "Elvira". The OG Oak Ridge Boys are featured. There might be some interesting things you could tell us about aging and how that effects the singing voice. Tim and Richard Sterban of the Oaks have a nice back-and-forth on the "oom pappa mow mow". This performance was arranged by Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay. So, there is definitely a heavy bass influence.
Thank you so much for telling us of your background with this song. I very much enjoyed your analysis of the song, and I enjoy seeing things from a singers point of view. I have heard it mentioned that Adam has som e wind sound effects in there a couple of times, but without headphones I am not able to pick them out. This will go right to the top of my Home Free playlist.
Wonderful cover for an amazing Mark Knophler composition who wrote it I believe for the Falklands war. He writes such beautiful music and lyrics and a guitar god.
There was no percussion unless some of the wind sounds that are in the video. Adam sings in a tenor voice when he does get to sing so he added to the tenors. The bass was beautiful in this and I love to hear a lot of bass so this made my ears very happy.
Thank you for a beautiful reaction. I have been listening to your reactions for while now (and subscribed). Take a look/listen to some of the other hymns and “almost” hymns they do - How Great Thou Art is the best example I can think of - Adam Rupp is usually singing and not beatboxing in those, just like here. Adam starts the “it is well…” of the second hymn, so you get to hear him sing finally. He is a tenor.
Tim enunciates....i like the clarity....he doesn't sacrifice diction for art..... in high school the low b was the extent of my range......no one else in the choir could get to the "c" ...the director would often have me ad lib the low notes in the 100 voice choir....my lone voice really didn't mar the arrangement but just added some fullness
Great reaction...love Home Free. Another amazing artist to react to is Marcelito Pomoy singing The Prayer on the Wishbus. He is amazing. You won’t believe what you are hearing. No vocal training. Raised himself on the street from the age of seven. He is a kind, humble and very talented young man. Please....and thank you. Enjoy! 👍
Home Free's gorgeous new cover of Dire Strait's "Brothers In Arms," with a stunningly pure arrangement from Club For Five. The original song has been an integral part of my musical experience from a very young age, so I'm quite pleased to see that Home Free did the original justice with their cover ❤
Mmmmmmm = nightmare for sheet music .
When a world class bass make the 😯 face you know it’s… you know pretty okay.

Tuukka Haapaniemi is great bass singer for the group Club For Five, Peter could probably check some of their cover like Sassy
Great critique! We cried when hearing this, not only for their wondrous talent and arrangement, but for my Air-force dad who gave his life for a young family.

The back ground voices sound so much like an organ. It's mesmerizing!
I love the in depth analysis and reaction. You're almost like the male bass version of Charismatic Voice.
That's why I subscribe and support both!
I came here right after watching the Charismatic Voice! The only difference I see is he doesn't fan out as much... lol

This was such a wonderful tribute for Veteran's Day, I love the haunting, delicate delivery.

Thank you for your reaction to this new rendition of one of my favorite songs!
I've seen them in concert several times. Tim singing Ring of Fire..you feel it in your stomach!! Adam also does a solo for a solid 10 mins doing what he does..they are all amazing!
Haunting, Mesmerizing, Magical and a Beautiful Masterpice.

Hello Dorothy how are you doing today?
Thank you for your reaction to Home Free and their take on this song. I appreciate you doing the breakdown of the song. It give us more of an insight into how the guys put the song together.
The background harmonies sound like a pipe organ to me. Beautiful!
I agree, this is one of my favorite chill and goose bump inducing Dire Straits songs! Mark Knopfler's guitar is just plain haunting
Very good reaction. This is a long time favorite from my favorite band.
I agree with you about the word "world (s)." Silence can be louder than any word.
Love all the feels. One of my other current faves is Tiim & Austin's My Maria on Austin's channel. Just makes me happy.
I love when they do 5-part harmony like they were able to do in the interludes. It seems to give a much bigger feel than just 4 parts.
Thanks for your detailed analysis. I appreciate reactions from singers.
If you notice, when Tim and Adam were standing in front of the window, they appear somewhat ghostly, as if to seem that they were some of those that did not make it.
Thanks for the great work.
This young sir is just a Phenomenal rendition by these guys. Adam and Tim were just awesome!!! Love the whole arrangement by all these guys. Thank you for your reaction!!!
I absolutely love your reactions ❣ ❤ ♥
Thank you for your reaction & analysis. I have always loved this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural bass was awesome, also Chance's solos & so were all the guys doing 5 part harmonies.

It's a grind but I love being able to do it, and I'm glad people like you appreciate it :)
This song gives me chills! The harmonies are superb! I love your reactions, I feel I learn so much! Thank you.
This is an amazing teaching experience for us to understand how music is used to create a sense of the emotion and words se we can feel it too
Home Free!!! They can’t be beat! Beautifully haunting!
I absolutely love this cover but after listening to your comments, I do like your idea of dropping out the echo on world. I can hear it in my head and omg even more impact. Love your in-depth reactions.
Thank's again for the analysis and commentary. It was great to get your insight on such a beautiful rendition.
I've waited for reactors with music background to analyze this wonderful piece since the premier came out. I enjoy this video. Thank you for the reaction. 💙
The thing I love about it is how haunting it is.....
I hear the vibrations of Tim's voice in a tactile way. Deep basses have that effect especially if the vocalist can sing them relaxed way.
A fabulous analysis of a true gem. Thank you.
Thank you Peter! This is hauntingly beautiful and I love everything about it from the beauty of their voices to the cinematography. Wondering if the sound of the wind in a couple of places ( I think shortly after the start of the intro and again towards the end ) is a sound effect by Adam layered in? It's really cool! i did hear it live, and it was soft.

prayer like ethos .. i like that .. . good one Peter .. made my day ...
Man, I love your reactions. I also love that your voice has that Tim like chiaroscuro sound when you sing along. Nice work!!!
Thanks so much!
You have a wonderful voice. Love it when you sing along. Really appreciate your professional perspective.. just subscribed!
Thanks!
"How Great Thou Art" is another they did without percussion. I think they save that for their most reverent songs.
If I remember rightly the original is in G#m as well. My dad gave me his old stereo complete with turntable when I was 9 or 10, along with the Brothers in Arms album on vinyl. I listened to that a lot. It was a big part in me picking up the guitar.

Smashing the👍🏼 and leaving a comment for the algorithm gods.
I was really hoping you critiqued this one. I heard the audio of it quite a while back and thought you'd dig it.
Couldn’t wait for your reaction to this 😬
Thanks for telling us about Club for Five. I wasn't familiar with them.
Almost too much emotion in that song. It's like its barely contained but you feel it tearing at you. Amazing song. EPIC cover by the boys.
Thanks for the singing breakdown. Very interesting. Also, thanks for your reaction.
Love your analysis as always, keep on👑
Thank you for a beautiful reaction.
Wonderful! 💗
Hello Walker how are you doing today?
I was saving this! Thank you!
you had me at "world" lol
Love Home Free
Love all the content Peter! So happy I found this channel, makes me want get into acappela, and learn how to project my voice in a better way!
Fantastic!
Enjoy! 👍
