I’ve never seen someone get so excited about an aeolian cadence. That was epic!!! 😂 Masterful piece by Pentatonix. Absolutely loved it and had chills the entire song.
One of the things I love about this is how Scott is using less of his breathy pop sound and we can hear a bit of the lovely resonance he is capable of producing. You get a bit of that in Sound of Silence as well. He has such a beautiful voice (in any style)
I noticed that as well, Torch, and loved it. His voice is so rich and perfectly suited for this genre if he wanted to do more. PTX always blows me away.
My Italian born fluently bilingual husband says that the actual pronunciation was spot on, but had a regional dialectic sound to it, as opposed to "true" Firenza Italian. So, whoever his linguistic coach was may have very well had a Spanish influence to it.
This makes sense. I’m a native English speaker and studied French in school (Parisian). I also grew up listening to my grandmother and her sisters speak Quebecois to each other. I didn’t understand much of the difference between these two dialects, because everybody from my teachers to my grandmother and great-aunts spoke English natively. You can hear some idiomatic differences, of course, but it wasn’t until I landed next to a guy from Montreal at work that I finally understood the difference between how French sounds vs. how Quebecois sounds.
From another Italian, Scott's consonants are good, but his vowels are inconsistent (closed when they should be open, and vice-versa), which is a little unsettling for people like me who speak "classic" Italian.
@@LunaKat9 I believe that is what my husband was referring to in his comment about dialectic sounding. Apparently you can go 20 km down the road in Italy and hear a completely different sounding dialect, which can be quite different from "classical" Italian.
He is absolutely right about dialects and their variations, and dialects are unfortunately dying rapidly. However for actors, singers, and performers in general, language coaches don't teach dialects unless specifically required, they teach "official Italian" which has precise pronunciation rules. Any and all opera singers will confirm this fact. When performing, even Italian artists learn how to water down their regional inflections, and it really all comes down to specific sounds. Scott does a very good job, but his vowels are not on point, which is more evident because his consonants are. And that is ok :) I can assure you that my pronunciation of foreign languages is definitely not always spot on LOL!

I just loved this reaction. There have been so many reactions, and it was such a joy to watch someone who genuinely knew and appreciated what was going on. Being a baritone/bass myself, I loved hearing you talk about "morning voice." My wife says first thing in the morning, my voice will sometimes make her toes curl. I thoroughly enjoy your reactions. They give me a bit of an education. I am, originally, self-taught, mainly because my mother would constantly tell me I couldn't sing to save my life, and she forgot that she raised me to perceive such as a challenge rather than a commentary. So I started watching training videos and going to karaoke nights and such to practice what was in the videos. Pretty soon, I realized that maybe I had progressed sufficiently. So I gave her a private "concert" of a few bars of a song, and she gave me an "eh" response. So I figured out that no matter what, I was forever going to be that guy who was a fish that learned to swim as a really little boy, qualified as a lifeguard at 13 and should have been a "professional" swimmer (whatever that is), and couldn't carry a tune to save his life, but who was a wizard on the soccer field and baseball diamond. I would never be anything else. I hope I never idealized my kids that way, but I am sure I have blind spots about them as she did with us. I was the brain, my sister was the beauty, my brother was the charmer, and so on. I think, to some degree, we all tend to idealize our children, especially if they have strengths where we lack strength and try to live vicariously through them because of it. Anyway, the whole point was to tell you that I enjoy having a more formal bent to your reactions, as it reinforces the occasional lessons that I have taken to improve a voice that was natural but untrained. I will likely never be professional in the music world, especially not beginning at 65, going on 66, but I took the lessons not to start a career, but to refine beyond what I was able to teach myself. Thanks for helping to further refine my understanding of a group I adore.

Because, as a singer myself, it’s hard to listen to “talk” about how great it is without giving actual musical critique; like, vocal technique, chest voice, falsetto, belting an E flat, chord structures, interweaving of harmonies, percussion talk, etc. You nail it every time.Thank you so much! And can we just mention how very difficult it is for Kevin to “beat box” at such slow tempos? I would think that would be harder. I'm glad to have your appreciation :) it definitely takes a whole different set of skills to keep a beatbox pattern feeling full and interesting at slower tempi -- you have to do just enough to make it engaging, but not so much that it pulls too much attention from the voices

Little brother, I only came across you last weekend when looking for reviews of another Penta song and am hooked. Your voice is killer, there's something sexy and touches deep to the core when you hear a bass voice. Then when watching you during your reviews, you don't hold back and you see your emotions which makes it all the more exciting and touching to see you get excited, as with Mitch and at the end. I enjoyed this song from Pentatonix when I heard it for the first time but, I gotta say, I enjoyed it even more hearing you dissect it. I know very little about music. I've had the fortune of being a part of a worship band who loves music and when I hear them dissect songs, it's somehow such a joy to me because the enthusiasm for it is contagious. Scott's pronunciation of Italian is amazing. Only the [e] in "sei" and in "c'è" are more open than what he's pronouncing. (Italian is my native language). Still, his pronunciation is great
I have no musical training, but have always loved hearing talented singers & musicians. I love PTX for so many reasons, and really appreciate you commenting on 2 items in this piece. One is the riff that Mitch pulled off right toward the end. It seemed to me there was an interesting (perhaps a half-tone change?) shift in there that I don't remember hearing before. The other is your comment on the bass line - not being crazy low, but so very lovely. I've always thought that part of what makes Mitch's lovely high register sound so wonderful is the contrast to the buttery bass line. Thank you for your reaction. I always enjoy learning from you!
love your analysis Peter on this epic piece of music it's a shame no reactor has ever mentioned how Kevin is keeping up the very high background harmony together with Kirstie and sometimes alone when Kirstie and Scott [and later with Mitch] are belting together. most people forget that next to his amazing beatboxing skills he is also a tenor and he uses that more often in various songs that people realize.

Actually a few other reactors mentioned vibrato, changing the chest to the head voice but of course, you as a musician noticed all these and even more. Above everything I would put your facial expression - it is simply the best! All the time I watched your handsome face, and I noticed that immense emotions ... pleasure, admiration ... I felt the same way, too. So I am very pleased that you as bass singer always pay attention to Matt. And give us the analysis, which is professional but understandable for us non-experts (although I know quite a lot about the music, the theory included). Can you imagine the song without bass and rhythm section? Yes, here stand out Kirstin, Scott and Mitch, but Kevin and Matt posed a basis for the whole song. Scott, he is remarkable both in singing and in Italian language. There is no American accent, he has done an excellent job. Of course, you know Italian, also as opera singer. Let me mention some general facts regarding languages you mentioned: although all three languages that you mention are Romance languages, is quite a difference between the Italian and Spanish, not to mention the Portuguese, given that grammatically the same roots and the same group of languages. The closest vocabulary is between Italian and French, and Spanish and Portuguese (89%). Maybe I notice quite a difference in pronunciation better because I speak several languages and because I am European. Who knows. Anyway, great, great reaction, thank you.
In the introduction of Bocelli and Dion, Foster, the co writer, said that translating to Italian was extremely difficult. There is a very good live version of this from their I♡radio performance. Might be fun to hear just for your own pleasure. I think it is amazing how Kevin goes effortlessly from percussion to vocal throughout the entire song.
Way back in the Sing Off, Ben Folds suggested that sometimes they tend to rush a bit (they'd been singing as a quintet for a few months at that point), and that there are some points where they can take their time with a note or a phrase. This song almost feels like the culmination of that suggestion. And the result is amazing.

I came across this video (as I watch many reactions) and was very impressed on many levels. Yes, this cover is absolutely amazing, but what I found as so much more interesting is that you Mr. Barber are both highly learned on the subject and quite equally emotive in your expressions. Being deaf in one ear myself I perhaps don't experience the depth of any given musical performance, but seeing the subtleties of your expressions truly touched me. When Mitch first began singing and through that sequence I watched in awe how it touched you. The head tilt, subtle smile, lighting of your eyes, the light nod, eyebrow raise and knit, etc. A depth of emotional resonance much like your very voice. It was almost as if watching someone falling in love, if only for an instant. I'll definitely be watching more of your reactions. Thank you. :-)

In just the past several weeks, I have begun listening to reaction videos for the first time--primarily reactions to Pentatonix Hallelujah and The Prayer. Of the 20 or so I listened to, I enjoyed Peter's analysis the most! I guess there's a place for "reaction listeners" who just say things like "that was crazy!" But as a singer myself, I so enjoy someone like Peter who has a more sophisticated analysis of the song, the arrangement, and the voices. Now that I've found Peter, I look forward to listening to other reactions he's posted to other songs!!

So ... after pretty much binge watching Pentatonix reaction videos in the last few days, this video was suggested to me by UA-cam. And since I'm a simple girl who can always be lured in by anything with "bass singer" in the title, I ended up sitting here with a big smile on my face after watching your reaction. I am in no way a person with much knowledge when it comes to music. I can't play an instrument, can't read music, and my singing is only appropriate for the shower. But I did grow up with opera and classical music and, for some reason, ended up with a very good ear for music. Scott italian is actually very good (I'm Italian) the only minor "glitches" are the double "L" in "Stella" (Star) which lacks emphasis and sounds a bit like "Stela" (with only one L) and the the "E" in "Sei" (you are) which should be more open.

Vibrato is interruptive. As awesome as Mitch and Scott was (incredible Italian), Kirstin always makes the climax and intensity (Pentatonix sound).

I'm glad to have your appreciation :) it definitely takes a whole different set of skills to keep a beatbox pattern feeling full and interesting at slower tempi -- you have to do just enough to make it engaging, but not so much that it pulls too much attention from the voices

Your voice is killer, there's something sexy and touches deep to the core when you hear a bass voice. I enjoyed this song from Pentatonix when I heard it for the first time but, I gotta say, I enjoyed it even more hearing you dissect it. I know very little about music. I've had the fortune of being a part of a worship band who loves music and when I hear them dissect songs, it's somehow such a joy to me because the enthusiasm for it is contagious. Scott's pronunciation of Italian is amazing. Only the [e] in "sei" and in "c'è" are more open than what he's pronouncing. (Italian is my native language). Still, his pronunciation is great
I have no musical training, but have always loved hearing talented singers & musicians. I love PTX for so many reasons, and really appreciate you commenting on 2 items in this piece. One is the riff that Mitch pulled off right toward the end. It seemed to me there was an interesting (perhaps a half-tone change?) shift in there that I don't remember hearing before. The other is your comment on the bass line - not being crazy low, but so very lovely. I've always thought that part of what makes Mitch's lovely high register sound so wonderful is the contrast to the buttery bass line. Thank you for your reaction. I always enjoy learning from you!

Actually a few other reactors mentioned vibrato, changing the chest to the head voice but of course, you as a musician noticed all these and even more. Above everything I would put your facial expression - it is simply the best! All the time I watched your handsome face, and I noticed that immense emotions ... pleasure, admiration ... I felt the same way, too.
So I am very pleased that you as bass singer always pay attention to Matt. And give us the analysis, which is professional but understandable for us non-experts (although I know quite a lot about the music, the theory included). Can you imagine the song without bass and rhythm section? Yes, here stand out Kirstin, Scott and Mitch, but Kevin and Matt posed a basis for the whole song.
Scott, he is remarkable both in singing and in Italian language. There is no American accent, he has done an excellent job. Of course, you know Italian, also as opera singer.
Let me mention some general facts regarding languages you mentioned: although all three languages that you mention are Romance languages, is quite a difference between the Italian and Spanish, not to mention the Portuguese, given that grammatically the same roots and the same group of languages. The closest vocabulary is between Italian and French, and Spanish and Portuguese (89%). Maybe I notice quite a difference in pronunciation better because I speak several languages and because I am European. Who knows.

I completely agree. This is truly one of my favorite songs and Pentatonix version is now my at the top.
Way back in the Sing Off, Ben Folds suggested that sometimes they tend to rush a bit (they'd been singing as a quintet for a few months at that point), and that there are some points where they can take their time with a note or a phrase. This song almost feels like the culmination of that suggestion. And the result is amazing.
Drumming with Jarvis often mentions tension and release and the use of space in music. Pentatonix nails those elements.

I came across this video (as I watch many reactions) and was very impressed on many levels. Yes, this cover is absolutely amazing, but what I found as so much more interesting is that you Mr. Barber are both highly learned on the subject and quite equally emotive in your expressions. Being deaf in one ear myself I perhaps don't experience the depth of any given musical performance, but seeing the subtleties of your expressions truly touched me. When Mitch first began singing and through that sequence I watched in awe how it touched you. The head tilt, subtle smile, lighting of your eyes, the light nod, eyebrow raise and knit, etc. A depth of emotional resonance much like your very voice. It was almost as if watching someone falling in love, if only for an instant. I'll definitely be watching more of your reactions. Thank you. :-)
I'm also deaf in one ear and I've always wondered how I would have experienced music if I had two functioning ears... But at the same time I'm grateful at least one of them is working and I can enjoy masterpieces like these.

In just the past several weeks, I have begun listening to reaction videos for the first time--primarily reactions to Pentatonix Hallelujah and The Prayer. Of the 20 or so I listened to, I enjoyed Peter's analysis the most! I guess there's a place for "reaction listeners" who just say things like "that was crazy!" But as a singer myself, I so enjoy someone like Peter who has a more sophisticated analysis of the song, the arrangement, and the voices. Now that I've found Peter, I look forward to listening to other reactions he's posted to other songs!!

Enjoyed your reaction. Very informative and entertaining. The arrangement on this is pretty cool. It’s traditionally a duet and PTX are still able to feature their vocalists by trading off the duet parts. Starts with Mitch/Scott, then Scott/Kirstie, then Mitch/Kirstie and back to Scott/Mitch with a little Matt thrown in. Loved it!

So ... after pretty much binge watching Pentatonix reaction videos in the last few days, this video was suggested to me by UA-cam. And since I'm a simple girl who can always be lured in by anything with "bass singer" in the title, I ended up sitting here with a big smile on my face after watching your reaction. I am in no way a person with much knowledge when it comes to music. I can't play an instrument, can't read music, and my singing is only appropriate for the shower. But I did grow up with opera and classical music and, for some reason, ended up with a very good ear for music. I love how you managed to put into words the many reasons why I absolutely adore Pentatonix. So thank you! This just made me very very happy. I'd also like to say that your voice makes me wish you'd read out the phone book or something. Because damn, it's comforting. I'm pretty sure your singing voice will make me cry. Scott italian is actually very good (I'm Italian) the only minor "glitches" are the double "L" in "Stella" (Star) which lacks emphasis and sounds a bit like "Stela" (with only one L) and the the "E" in "Sei" (you are) which should be more open.
