- Richard Hammond compares two hot-hatches - the up market Peugeot 206 GTi, and on the lower end of the budget - the Proton Lotus GTi. He tests both car's performance and handling and weighs up both of their pro's and con's to see if price makes a big difference when it comes to performance.

Many years ago I bought an almost new ex Lotus Satria GTi with 8000 miles on the clock for almost half price (about 8k). It went like a rocket, but the range was only about 200 miles on a tank of fuel. Sadly, it was written off on the motorway courtesy of being rear-ended by white van man! The good news was that I got more back from the insurance company than I paid for it!

+Raja Mudzaffar not really. The CPS is the engine type, Cam Profiling System. I believe the limited edition R3s are quite similar with the GTi. I agree Proton should reintroduce the GTi and Putra
intergratypezero Yes, I agree with you. My opinion is actually based on the satria GTi already marking the success of Proton in developing a fine sport car. It's already got the name from it. Thus, Proton should actually introduce better satria GTi, so that the name will keep getting attention which apparently will increase peoples perception on the Proton too like how mitsu did with the EVO model.

As much as I like the engineering progress of today's Proton, the old Satria GTi (alongside the Putra) would still get my solid vote. In fact, I would love to own those two cars in mint, unmodified conditions and in manual. :3

@@fxjh21 i doubt its the ORIGINAL satria gti. Its probably the converted model. The original GTI would usually cost over 15k & above

GTI only came in manual, sell mine off a few years ago for RM12k, the biggest regret in my 33 years of life

Satria Neo is a good car. Remember satria s2000 rally car. Proton Iriz is a good handling car. Also can turn into a rally car. Go test an Iriz, you will be amazed. My family has 2 Iriz, a 2015 and 2019 models. Rides like a continental car, adsorb bumbs, potholes and patches of resurface roads with ease and comfort.
The proton is more interesting than the 206
I thought the 206 GTI had blown it's head for a minute there, look at all those fumes from the exhaust haha!

That Satria GTi is still a gem. Here in Malaysia, a completely unmolested example, can go for as far as £20,000.

It was the Talbot Sunbeam not Horizon that got Lotusised.
206 gti was first 136 bhp & they did an estate version then it got a power up grade to 180 bhp
206 Gti had138bhp not 136bhp and Gti 180 has 177bhp and the SW estate didn't have the Gti 180's Engine
i know the estate was only avalieble in 136, i well the versions well tested did 136hp & 180

Love the PEUGEOT 205GTi 1.9cc and l adore SATRIA GTi (R3)...sadly both cars can only be had if you live in Malaysia, b'coz it is cheap to insure and the R3 spec only sold in Malaysia.

The proton was literally a mitsibushi colt. they could have gone the extra mile and put a turbo and AWD to make a evo version.
It wasn't the Horizon It was the Chrysler Sunbeam that Lotus worked on..
They should have called it the Lotus Proton!

kinda agree with you. the neo cps is available in the, well, cps. just a few steps away from becoming a CFE. but the problem was they discontinued the satria neo. ah well... 138hp of turbo fury in something that tiny. damn...
If they fit the CFE in the Neo, The police cars will have a hard time trying to catch them. The Neo is light (because it's a sports hatch) and the CFE makes about 138HP with a low-boost turbo. If the owners are smart enough to increase the boost, the police will have no chance. Even with the CPS it's almost perfect. But I do want one with a CFE though. It's gonna be an awesome track car.

The french made good cars, my neighbor drives a 2007 Naza (Peugout) 206 and it's still going strong

Not the best of Proton Cars, its called the Satria in Malaysia, usually owned by Uni students with a budget for a starter car. Then comes the Suprima S and Preve which matches the Honda City and Toyota Vios..... well atleast on a budget point of view.....

A range of 25 miles? That's 40 kms, that's just straight up incorrect. Maybe I misheard the video but I get anywhere up to 400km a tank, 300km on average. What? The tank is like 30 litres which is tiny but like not that tiny

Weird because most of peugeot last around 7-10 years while proton gti still hot sales and stillin use for racing.
Here in malaysia peugeot is rubbish. Costly to maintain and easy to breakdown. Most importantly it got ugly front and rear look compared to satria gti
