  • Along with building our dream home, we've gotten multiple questions and comments that need to be addressed. So I thought I'd have a talk it out session with you guys and gals, to answer all the questions, and go over our vision for our property as we build our dream home. As you know by now, this isn't just a dream home, but a dream property. The home is just a place to lay our heads. The real fun happens on our property.

I love your channel and happy to be included in the progress you are making on your property. You are a creative person and my goodness you have propagated many more trees than you ever cut down. People, who are not in action and creating, freak out about destruction because they do not know how or do not have the drive to out create it. I definitely think this is why some react so strongly to the smallest of destruction even if it in the direction of building something wonderful and useful.

My thought exactly!! Don’t worry about what people think, or their reactions, even though it can hurt a bit with nasty comments, but you know, and most of us who follows you know, what kind of person you are and we can see the bigger picture and think, Outside of the glimpses that you share, and you are a garden sowing growing person!! Of course you care about trees, forests, habitat and wildlife so you would never hurt or destroy Mother Nature so, don’t care what " they " think and do you!! Could I suggest a small thing here. Plant some pollinator shade plants and flowers in between your rhododendrons or as undergrowth in your forest area.. 😊 it would look so beautiful and be a gift for wildlife ❤ Love what you do Mike, and thank you for sharing your journey with us 🙏🏽 your house is going to be epic! Looking forward to follow along and see the progress 😊

I had to cut down 4 trees last year. Midnight plum, standard apple, maple, and elm. Some were 10 years old, others more than 20. A few weeks after, I planted 18 evergreens and I have at least 6 fruit trees to plant this spring. Sometimes you have to tear things down to rebuild better.

Every home that’s built has had trees removed in order to open the area. Our house was built more than 20 years ago and there were some old White Pines that had to be removed. I had them chipped and we used every bit of those trees to create paths through the woods. Today, there are so many new and self sown White Pines that we share them with other gardeners.

There are always going to be people who complain about cutting down trees. This is your dream home & property. You have put in the labor and time to be able to make this dream come true. Don't let others make you feel bad about it. Man has been shaping nature in one way or another, for 1000's of years, and will continue to do so. All gardeners play God, deciding what will stay and what will go. If done with awareness and sensitivity, that's OK. You can't always create without some destruction.

Trees come down every day just to make the lumber to build a house, so to have to remove a few trees in order to build the house- well, it just has to happen! You'll plant more than enough trees and shrubs to cover any losses. Don't worry about what someone said. My grandmother used to say that in order to make a cake, you have to have to break some eggs. Soon you'll get back to propagation and planting! You'll look back at these comments a couple of years from now, the house will be long finished, your nursery will have grown hugely, and the girls will be a lot bigger with the standard kid issues - and you'll shake your head! Don't stress someone's comments; stress the house and family right now! Keep filming whatever videos you want to, and we'll still be here, cheering you on!! I'm about to move across country to start my own ornamental plant nursery, and I guarantee you that a whole lot of bushes, brush, trees and dirt is going to come out of that land in order to make that happen! I'll film, of course, but I'm not sure I'll post right away. As for your fears over your project - I absolutely get it! Best of luck to you all!

Mike, I don't know how many years I've been following your channel. I stumbled on to it while searching for how-to videos on propagating azalea & hydrangea cuttings from my great grandparent's near 500 acre homestead in southern Alabama, of which I inherited 45 acres. What I stumbled across while searching was your fig videos & remembered there was still one old fig tree where my grand parents house stood & how my cousins & I loved eating the figs right off the trees, along with all the other fruits & vegetables they grew. This started a new addiction/obsession for me, my first cutting is starting it's 5th season, so I guess I've been following you 6 years. I've rooted dozens of cuttings since, SAVING grandma's one remaining fig tree & taken at least a dozen back to bama, sharing them with my cousins & planting one at my little cabin there. I spend normally 4 to 6 weeks a year there in the Spring & Fall, making the 600 mile, 9.5 hr trip each way to take care of the property. I did my 1st "select" timber cut in 2014 & hopefully will get another one in before I leave this planet, as I'm approaching 70. I was devastated at first, seeing all the damage left by the cut, but even with hurricane Zeta blowing through a few yrs back, I now have a thick, healthy forest again. So you alert your nahsayer's it's called land management. I've learned so much & gotten so many ideas from your channel & Shelly's, I'll be here until the end. Besides the knowledge I've gained, I love the passion you exude in your videos, love & knowledge you share with your "little buddies" & look forward to your new videos every week & share your channel with friends & family. Thanks again. Cheers 🍻

Speaking of trees; we bought a house three years ago. My Mom rented the house for years and the landlady financed the house for us when Mom passed away. Everyone loved my Mom so much and she wanted us to have the house. The minute we signed the papers which we are bound to legally, the sewer broke down. It took us three years to get a grant/loan from the USDA and finally had our sewer replaced by a reputable plumber. The point is we had an old, very large Mulberry in the backyard right by our sewer line. We didn't have the money to cut down the tree but the plumber had to tear out roots just to get to the sewer, and there were roots in the sewer line clear out to the middle of our backyard. There were roots under our sidewalk, and under our house. I know because when the plumber dug up the ground, and went on break, I took a look. I imagine that every inch of our house has Mulberry and Elm tree roots under it. The roots were massive! They had to ground up roots in the sewer line under the house in the pipes leading to the toilet and bathroom with their rooter machine. I love trees in the right place, but not in the backyard corner of our house. You can be sure that I will be extremely careful where I plant any trees, In our yard we will probably grow dwarf trees.

Mike, I think that what are doing is great. Thank you for sharing your build with us. I know that you guys are excited about this and you are living the American dream. For all of the people that have complained about the cutting of the trees, let them. You are building your house in the area you want it, sometimes for progress, things have to go. I will truly enjoy watching the progress on your house. I want to thank you for all of the videos you produce, and I have learned a lot from them. Please keep up the good work. I live in south Louisiana and like seeing what others do in other parts of the country.

It's really strange that anyone would think that THEY aren't living on land that was cleared to make space for where THEY live. My husband and I moved from Northeast Ohio to Coastal South Carolina and I had to put a metal decorative flag at the "driveway" opening so we could find it! We cleared wild wisteria vines, wild grape vines, trees, whatever we had to to create the oasis we love. We plan and build well together but he's the 100 extra nails guy and I like to build things with moving or tweaking them. I like to live with things a little bit and see if they'd work better another way. Drove him nuts at first, but after having him change a few big things up he likes to live with it a little while before making them permanent too. We used tree scraps for creating wooden toothbrush holders, candle holders, end tables, etc. I love seeing them and remembering where we started here and where we are. You'll always have negative Nellie's! Lots of us are loving your excitement and seeing your joy at creating your new home!! You get 1 life. And you, sir, are an inspiration to make your 1 life one you can look back on and be proud of!! Godspeed!

Hey Mike! I’ve been watching your videos for almost 4 years now. I think It started with the Japanese Maples or Willows because my wife and I moved into our 1/2 acre property in Northeast PA and I wanted to grow some. Cutting down trees or removing/digging soil is a part of change. I’ve been removing a bunch of non-native/not pollinator friendly bushes and grass that were left behind by the previous owners and replacing them with native wildflowers to attract pollinators and bugs that go after aphids/other pests to protect our vegetable garden.
I’ve had neighbours ask me (not in a nasty way, more curious) why I’m cutting down trees and removing grass only to replace them with more trees and “weeds”.
I just explain that I’m replacing them with native (ash, maples, birches, eastern redbuds, wildflowers) or beneficial/ non-invasive trees such as sweet chestnuts, willows, and ginkgo’s. (Plus some tropicals like bananas and canna’s b/c they look great)
I know I’m rambling (sorry haha) but my point is that with what you’re doing to replace and rejuvenate the property is more than enough to offset less than a handful of trees. Plus, it’s not like you’re leveling the entire 10 acres and putting in concrete or decimating the wildlife permanently. You’re an inspiration! You got me into gardening and growing (and figs…thanks haha) and I’ve even made my own Instagram to share with other people my journey and what I’m growing here in Northeast PA. If it weren’t for you Mike, I wouldn’t have known how to germinate Japanese Maples, or how to propagate willow from cuttings, or how to root grapes from cuttings. I appreciate all you do and man, you, your wife, and kids deserve to have a home after all you’ve helped us with. Thank you!!

    Hey, Mike,
It's been a while. Glad to see you and your family are hangin' in there with your dreams. You really have done a lot with your property and it's looking great! Gonna have to backtrack to your fig trees to see what you've done with them and how they're doing.
[Remember] the fig tree I rooted from 3 root cuttings I took after our landlord decided to cut down the decades old tree on the side of our building? Two didn't make it but one did. Despite an occassional chomp from my cat when I put it in the window for a good sunning, 'Marcus' is a real trooper going on ?5 yrs.? this summer! It will be a looooong time before I ever see a fig on that tree, but I get so much pleasure knowing I saved that tree's lineage. 🌱🌿🌳😺
Just want to add, if certain persons have been following you for a bit they would have known what you had in mind for your family, and maybe should have made the decision whether to stay or not a lot sooner than now. At the same time, no need to unsubscribe. They could easily come and go, on and off, as they're interests guide them__no judgements, right(?).
Like me__I have lots of interests so, I toggle between them. The channels I REALLY find value in, I subscribe. Even if I don't consistently follow along I stay subscribed(and 'like')so they don't 'lose' much from YT. Your channel has been in that category for a little while cuz I live in an upstairs apartment with no yard or balcony to grow anything__I only have several overgrown houseplants that are in need of repotting soon. 😛 But I value your ingenuity when it comes to trying different approaches with the plants you're passionate about, as well as, how you and Shelly care for your family and steward your property. So, I stay suscribed. I'll have to check out how much your girls have grown, too! 😺
I do have a question: Do you have multiple accesses to the crawlspace on the build? I didn't notice any on the left side, looking from the back view. That would be a looong crawl if repairs/maintenance were needed. 😭 Count me as one who would be interested in seeing your house plans, too!
Love, Light, and Blessings for bringing your dreams to fruition. 🙏😇✨💫🌱🌿🌻🐝🌳🌎💖🙌😺

I was gone for a while but came back to find how to propagate a certain plant. Fortunately it was in time to see the first part of your home build. Love it!! Just a note: we are not here to serve our "stuff." Our stuff is suppose to serve us. It looks to me like you are stewarding your land, and that's its purpose. Care for it and it will provide for you. The trees gave you shade, and now they will keep you warm. Good job all around. Many blessings on this journey for you and Shelly and your sweet girls. I'm praying for you. Hope that's OK.

Rhododendrons and Japanese maples are two of my all time favourite beauties. (You could have even more months of flowering - up to 9, with some Camellias, but I'm sure you've weighed that up). Keep all the videos coming - walks, chicken barns, the lot. I can see big trees from an apartment I'm stopping in at the moment. I am a dedicated butt wiper!
I'm not crying about the trees but it is painful to watch them come down.
That should be enough firewood to get you through next Winter tho.
We have more trees in western Washington than there are people on the planet!👍

no, mike. i do not think there is any problem with taking down the trees. if a plant is in the way, it's a weed. with all the care that you give to your garden, it makes no sense to me for anyone to complain about what you do to your property. good luck. carmine.

Preface: I'm watching on our "Smart Tv" with my wife. My wife asked if we could watch the progress on your build, I responded, "Yes I want to see it too".
We like it as much as your plant videos, because you are the host!
I found you because 1 year ago, next month. A guy in an alley offered me a fig... you know how that turns out! 18 fig trees, plus 15 cuttings later I'm not going to rehab. No, no. No!
I'm one of the folks who asked about milling the "Tree". I'm no " Greener" than Ted Nuggent is, trees are here to use, animals are here for sustenance. I love animals in nature and sometimes on my plate.
I'm sorry you are receiving guff. It sounds as though you have the right perspective. We are looking forward to all your future videos. Period.
Now we are going to unpause your video, in Progress.
God Bless you and your family.

Well, four trees are nothing, compared to what some logging companies do. If you used the wood in some way, so much the better. Anyway I wish you and your family good luck with the build, and Happy Easter. Look forward to see progress......

I am surprised that you even give a second of thought to negative comments like that... During the time you have been creating videos, you have propagated so many plants and planting so many new trees that it should not be a concern.
Do what you have been doing and let us enjoy your content and don't even bother with negative comments... 👍🤗

So happy for your family on building your dream home! I was taken back at first but I'm so excited to see the build unfold! I'm sorry I haven't watched your videos in a bit but I'm trying to catch up on them but the last several months have been quite eventful for me and things are calming down so I look forward to catching up on your earlier videos. But I just have to watch the house build ones before I do. I never doubted that you would replace those trees one way or another. Looking forward to more guidance on plants and trees and I'm excited that my son in law is also a plant fanatic like me. Because of some of the tips that you helped me with I have passed on to him and he is having great success. I have introduced him to your channel but he is in nursing school and he and my daughter have a new baby girl born February 1st so they are keeping him busy but spring is almost here in Wyoming so we have been talking about plants and gardens. I successfully propagated several rose bushes and they will be planted in his garden this year. I need to find some full sun plants for my garden and look forward to planting each and every one! Plant videos, house videos either way I'm here to stay!
