It's a total myth that things aren't "built to last" anymore, in fact the older stuff broke more, just the things still left around are the ones which happened to survive, so you end up with a well known phenomenon called survivorship bias. And by the way, those TVs had solid glass on them because it was needed to help maintain the vacuum. Usually when TVs broke, it was because the CRT went out, and overall their displays faded with age much faster than any of today's TV. Sure, they're still watchable, but the phosphors age regardless of whether the TV has been used, so the color accuracy deteriorates.

Because they are, and he's right. Plasmas form when a high voltage (~300 V) is passed through a low-pressure gas. Because it works at a partial vacuum, the glass on the screen has to be thick enough to handle at least around 10 PSI. In contrast, a LCD is just tough enough to keep the liquid from leaking out. Additionally, the pixels need walls to prevent the plasma from leaking out and lighting adjacent pixels, which strengthens the screen even more. If you ever picked up a plasma TV, you'd know there's a whole lot more glass than an LCD.
