    A little advice: 1) Try to switch on the "fill-in" and it will sound more like a live drummer playing with you when you switch drum variations. 2) Connect some external switches like: volume pedal for drum volume, and a double switch like Boss FC7 for drum variation 3) Assign one of the knobs 7 - 8 or 9 as drum stop/start. And you never have to bend anymore while you're playing live. *I even assigned patch increase/decrease in "mode 3" to 2 of the pedals that I don't have to bend and turn the knobs when I want to change to next or previous song.* 😉
    I hope this helps you. Have fun! 😊

    I love the depth of understanding you demonstrate. You've obviously spent a LOT of time getting fluent with all the different knobs and settings.
    What you were saying at the end there about accessibility: this is something I find with pedalboards in general. I'm surprised that no-one has really addressed this issue any further than just offering foot-switches to rack or desk-mounted gear, or offering computer apps to edit all those parameters (not so helpful in a live situation).
    I kinda like the idea of a rack or stand-mount device that has all the knobs and displays and is fully integrated with the pedals that do the kinds of functions you most need in a live situation.
    Thanks for your videos in general. I'm an older guy (nearly 67) who is getting into (trying to get into) looping for the first time ever, and yours are amongst the most helpful guides I've found so far.

    • @EmilyMcVicker
      @EmilyMcVicker  Рік тому +1

      That’s so awesome! It’s great to hear from you. Yeah, I’m surprised about that too. It seems like the companies beef up their products with all kinds of capabilities, but so few people actually implement them in the live game time situation, the accessibility seems looked over 🤷‍♀️
      But my loop pedal has enabled me to play all kinds of gigs that I wouldn’t have been able to previously. so I am always considering practicality. The Looper is supposed to work for me lol it’s not my job to show off all the things it technically can do… well… Except for here on this channel lol

      @@EmilyMcVicker Yeah. I've got a Fractal FX8 pedal (which I love!) and its architecture is at least as deep and formidable as the RC600. In fact, the guy I traded it off just found it too complicated, and I totally get that.
      Like the RC600, it has a small screen, with small buttons to select parameters. Unlike the RC600, it has a great little app to tun on the computer that gives you relatively simple access to all that functionality. So simple. Sit or stand in front of the computer and experiment on the device at your feet
      That makes all the difference.
      I'd love to see Boss come up with something similar. Hey... you're something of an ambassador for Boss here. Maybe you could have a word with them? ;-)

    Hi Emily. My name is Bridget and I am from New Zealand. I just bought an RC-600 to use for gigging last week. Have my first gig next Saturday so it is a quick turn around to figure everything out and your videos have been so helpful so thank you. They are super engaging and fun to watch with an easy way of getting info across. With the drum beats, I assigned button 8 to be the rhythm start/stop which makes it super accessible mid song. Still trying to figure out ways to make it sound more natural way of incorporating them.
    Thank you for all your videos - I have watched so many in the last week. You are incredible at what you do.

    I have the RC 500 and I use the FS 7. On the FS 7 I have the B switch set to Rhythm Start and Stop.
    I use that for 1 bar or even 1 beat Rhythm Breaks. Of course this is all start and stop, but I sometimes just want Rhythm Stop Start.
    You are right about the figiting that is required to move through the Rythm stettings with your hands can be cumbersone and not so conveinient in the live moment, but If you know a track and a beat you want to use for a specific song then You obviously have to put it into a memory bank and know what you have set there. You can set different Rhythmn Variations for different tracks so if you want a Chorus variation beat you can put it to a different track.
    You are awesome, Love your energy and your channel. Keep on Looping in the free world.

      Thanks friend! You sound like pro. It’s pretty clever some of the work arounds people have and how everyone chooses their own tricks.
      I always try to make my transitions smooth as possible so I don’t really want to be messing with the pedal at all. So it feels natural. But if I wanted to use the drums, I would either have to pre-plan my arrangement a little more, or I would have to futz with my settings. That’s probably the main caveat for me

    This is a fantastic demo.. I've been researching this model for some time. I do simple loops with the VE-8 Boss pedal in my acoustic shows, but I'm wanting to go further. My problem with loop performances is that you sit there and watch a person, build, build, build.. and then finally get a song going. It's interesting to me.. the musician in a crowd, but I can tell that normal folks are losing focus. So.. I want to loop more and keep it fun, but don't want to get too caught up in it. Your songs seem to be just right. You take a moment to build (but not too long), and your energy is high throughout the tune. Great job! Great vids. I've subscribed and will be watching your content. 🤘

    Hi Emily! You can actually record the drums to a track like a normal instrument. Another option is to trigger each sound via midi and play the drums as you want :)

    • @EmilyMcVicker
      @EmilyMcVicker  2 роки тому +2

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. I played with having one track with just plain drums. But I’m pretty sure it doesn’t record the sound of the drums, it just plays along to an empty track. Because it will allows you to change the style after you’ve recorded.
      I’m interested in how you use the midi!

    Hi Emily, without a separate footswitch you are very limited with possibilities to handle the internal drums. For example, there are midi boards, witch you can program f. e. fills, breaks, different drums while you play live. What I agree is the sound from the drums, don't like em that much, that's the reason why I use the "beatbuddy" foot pedal with really fantastic sounds connected in my case via midi with the Boss rc - 500. At the end, it's all a matter of taste. Everyone can see and feel your passion for music. Thanks for sharing🙏I enjoy your videos.... You can use the software to create your own tracks and set everything there (intro, fills, variations, song parts, pauses, etc.).: it takes some time but if you always stick to the same patterns to perform the same things it will do the job. A way to have more control for improvisation could be to use something like a beatstep (midi in ch 10) and play/sequence it live.

    Really great video!! I' m running a home studio, lot of (rack) synth's, keyboards, workstations, digital piano's, acoustic and electric guitars etc. Have a Presonus 64S mixing console , in combination with Studio One. I realized that I was slowly making or creating music whithin the computer. So a couple of weeks ago, I decided to buy a Roland SPD-SX Pro Sampler / Drum pad. Just to record my own rythm's. No longer use Superior Drummer for the drum parts (MIDI patterns). Just create them by myself. I'm playing a little bit of guitar also, but, always recording in Studio one, and then, you know, using the mouse for copying, comping etc. No creative process anymore. So I Googled for a looper pedaL. There where two best pedals, for me. The Boss and the Headrush. So, I'm a guy who's reviewing everything. And a lot of reviews about the Boss, lot of reviews about the Headrush. But I decided to order the Boss, because of your review. Why? Because how you're presenting your video, just great!! Your're not always in tune with your voice, but it doesn' t matter. It is just how you present you'r creativity with the Boss pedal.
    Regards,
    Mark Hofland

    It's complicated for sure. As you say the drum rhythms are a good idea when streaming or practicing at home. However, for a live show when you need to stay connected with the audience, not a good idea. Just my opinion. You can't beat humans playing drums and a bass guitarist pun intended. Nice Vid. Your harmonies are awesome. I Just got a RC600, but been using a RC500 for ages and use the drums a lot. Defiantly recommend assigning rythem start stop to an external switch like a boss FS-7. The RC600 had 2 ctrl switch inputs. Total of 4 switch so you could use one for Rhythm start & stop, another for variation etc. I think the RC600 drums are ok wish, maybe for practicing. but not great. I don't like any of the snares, but the cajon is cool. Personally one of the main reasons I got the RC600 it to use rhythms I've made in Ableton. I will use channels 1-3 for guitar and bass, then 4-6 for rhythms I've made. eg 4 for high hats, 5 for kick and snare, 6 for percussion (congas). Then I can control the feel of the drums and use 64 bar loops with lots of variation like a real drummer.

Why the hack do I put all this into a single box which can only be placed wrong - either I put it on the table and can´t operate the buttons with my feet or I put it on the floor and constantly have to bend down. Why don´t I simply make a device that I can operate with my hands and connect it to a footswitch to use the buttons to step on?

    Hi Emily, just one question about something that I tried yesterday but was not able to make work. Let's say you have 2 tracks, #1 for the verse and #2 for the chorus and at the end, you repeat the chorus a couple of times, and then you want to have a repetition only with the percussion or rhythm so the audience can sing along, and then at end of the song a repetition of the chorus with the track 2 and the rhythm on. So I tried pressing button 9 in mode 1, for "Start/stop all" function and it worked to stop the track, but when I pressed it again to restart it, it always sent me to track 1 and wouldn't resume the last track that was playing....is there a way to do it? I know I can press the particular start/stop button of track 2, but I was wondering if such a central start stop button existed, because, you know, I could have multiple tracks in parallel and want to stop/start all at the same time. Thanks in advance

    • @EmilyMcVicker
      @EmilyMcVicker  Рік тому

      Im confused do you want ur recorded “verse” and “chorus” to play at the same time? Cuz that’s what would happen if you pressed the all start- right?
      Are u using the built in rhythm? And you’re trying to play the rhythm without using ur recorded loops? There’s an option for that in the rhythm menu.
      What I would do, is just hit track 2 like ur saying. Sounds like you’re trying to do something else also… but i might not be understanding why that isn’t doing all u want it to.
      I have mastered the technique of “double tap” which really comes in handy. You can start and stop again really quickly to reset where in ur loops you are. But you HAVE TO DO IT IN TIME so the audience is none the wiser. Sounds like if you let the audience run the show for a second, you might have to do that to get back on the rails.
      Please clarify if I am misunderstanding you!

      @@EmilyMcVicker Hi Emily! Thank you so much for your reply. I hadn't read all at first on my phone. Sorry. I'm trying to cover "Chasing cars" from Snow Patrol, and the song has a moment where the chorus continues without the guitar, right? during that time the voice continues singing but this motivates the audience to sing louder...so, I will always have control, but yes, you mentioned the point of the double tap, sometimes it doesn't work for me and it was simpler a single click of the "All start/stop" button. I'm using the onboard rhythms. In my tests of a couple of days ago, when I pressed "All start-stop" everything stopped but only track 1 (verse) would always start. I was expecting that the "All" meant "all current/running tracks and rhythm" so when you press All Start, all the ones that were muted (active tracks) get triggered again. May this be due to a system bug? Thanks again.

      Supposedly, the 600 has the same sounds as the 10-R. Looks to be the case so far. The 10-R is easier to dial up what you want and add intros, fills, endings, and fades. However, the 10-R does add an auto fill every 4 measures that cannot be deleted, is limited to 2 tracks, and you cannot save the name of the memory. Still a great unit! The 600 gives you more control over all the parameters of the drums, but it takes more time to program them all. Still learning, but drum control plus more tracks is why I bought the 600 too. Still the 10-R is nice to have for quicker sessions. Hope that helps!

      For those who are interested Re: Maschine/RC600 sync
      To use Maschine MK3 and RC600 together you can use Maschine as the clock master and RC600 as the slave. This allows you to tap out the tempo on Maschine and RC600 is automatically at the same tempo. You can use “Loop Start” button on Maschine to play everything on RC600 as well as whatever you have on Maschine. This will cause all loops on the RC600 to play (and if you have the rhythm switched on that will play too). If you have nothing on RC600 then the rhythm will play if you have it enabled. There are 2 modes I’ve played with that seem to work well. 1: Machine records synths loops (the usual machine workflow, record drums/synths/pianos/etc). Once playing you then record to RC600 through a footswitch press to a track, effectively storing a bounced loop. 2: you use Maschine as a synth input device and you just record to RC600 as you would any other instrument. Using Quantize on RC600 really helps. I’m sure there’s a possibility of using RC600 as a clock master and it can then tell Maschine to play whatever you have loaded (eg a whole song with parts etc). I need to play with this. I have a NI keyboard too that integrates really well with Maschine for the record.

    You can add your own beats with the rhythm editor as well
