My buddy and I have been talking for years about wanting to have a twist rudder setup like this! It's fantastic to see someone actually use that setup, and for a moment had hopes this would be widely available. We have used twist rudder setups for years in Flight Sims. Superb stuff, I want one! The Quad is pretty amazing too!!
Awesome, I need to get one Stingray for myself. For those thrilling fast Aerobatic FPV i could do with it. Hope Curtisyoungblood ships to mainland china? :D
I've been wanting to see someone do a collective-pitch quadcopter (I've been calling it "CQ") for years now! This is spectacular, not only in functionality, but in simplicity. I'm absolutely floored by what you've come up with and really looking forward to the other features you said you'll be adding in the future. Way to go!!!
Well done Curtis! This is why America rocks! People like you with the knowledge and motivation to make something this cool without the resources of all the big companies. Very impressed!
I was trying to working in one variable pitch quad around a year ago, but due to lack of time and not a clean idea on how to do it, I ended up dropping the project. This looks much much better than what I was going for. Really awesome
Bought it. Loved it. Belts stripped. Belts on back order for months. Its a high maintenance quad but so much fun to fly and soooooooo easy. I would call it intermediate at its hardest. Not for indoor flying though as it is fast.
Saw the Hall of Fame bridge in the background. Right near where I went to college! Cant wait for these var pitch multis to become widespread/affordable!
FliteTest I went to Stark State College. I received my Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology there. Taking a closer look at it, one of my favorite classes there (Machine Tools) is only about 1,000ft from your HQ, haha. I posted on your FB page, but if those junkyards are still there, they would make a cool FPV video.
That is some crazy ingenuity. so simple yet complex at the same time I don't understand it. Looking forward to having something like that in the near future.
The single stick radio from back in the day was referred to as a "Cuddle Box" because you would actually cuddle the transmitter in your arm like you were holding a baby. The throttle was a slider on the side of the box, so the arm that was cuddling the transmitter would control the throttle and the other hand on the single stick. I've been to and flown with Curtis at many events, he is one of the best in the business he is actually one of the main reasons I got into flying helicopters and doing FAI/FC3. And he is a super nice guy to boot!
Wow !! You guys actually got the OG CYB on deck !! This a good look for you guys! Oh yeah I enjoy watching you guys evolve into better pilots and programmers! I've grabbed some great info from you guys regarding quads and tri's. Keep up the good work.
Well...I was up in the air in so man ways on which quad or tri rotor to buy, many many on the market. To build or not to build, FPV, or just camera...questions after questions. I think my questions have been answered with this set up. Simply awesome design, and well engineered. Coming from Curtis, what would one expect?
Very nice to see that someone has taken what MIT developed 3 years ago in the lab, combined it with the basic design of a 4x4 RC car and created a functional product. Very impressed
The idea he had of racing in the Grand Canyon is awesome! I'd love to see either FPV racing with planes or helicopters or quads there. It'll be like pod racing but on a smaller scale
Beautiful! After I saw this video, I do not day-dreaming about 'classical' quadcopter style anymore (four motors, no servos). This one is in my dreams now (unfortunately, no money to buy)!
WOW that quad looks like amazing! 3D seems like no problem considering it has 4 blades! It looks like you dont have to worry about bogging at all! Great video!
Love to have that controller setup (and bird) for my disabled grandson. He manages to fly his copters and quad, but with very limited left hand mobility, that would be a great plus!
Love the video, great craft and ingenuity. Really wish there was more to this episode...wanted to see David fly it! They had two, he couldn't even show us his attempt to fly? Would've been nice to see them race a makeshift course!
I am 100% a surface guy at heart but I have watched about 15 or 20 of these videos and I have to tell you it looks like a ton of fun to fly I have checked out the beginners videos and I am seriously considering a starter plain any ideas for a plane rtf under $150 ? Keep up the good work!!!
Wow multi rotors just took a whole new track with that baby. and only one motor, and autorotation is now possible with a multirotor. Great Vid guys as always.
HE'S FLYING IT UPSIDE DOWN! HE'S CUTTING GRASS FOR FUN! HE'S DOING SOME HARD ASS MANOEUVRES LIKE THEY'RE HOVERING! Charpu flies fast and crashes a lot - not comparable.
I had the chance to hang with Curtis during the 1996 World Helicopter Championships (Real full size) is Salem, Oregon. I was the Technical Inspector of all the helicopters during the event.
That's just sick! :P And all on just one motor. Curious: Is it more efficient to run a motor on each rotor or a single motor to run all the rotors at once? Or is it just a matter of tastes?
This is a game changer all other Multi rotors will have to start upping there game now loving the belt drive cheaper than motors/ esc 's to replace if you duff it great love it
I don't think so. I guess a crash will cost a lot more. When a rotor breaks it will bend the boom and probably destroy the rotors mechanic and the servo. Having done this to a couple of helis tails, I can tell you, it hurts a bit ^^
Finally someone had the same idea I've thought about that but I am only 14 so there is no way I could make one. Good job on the the quad. Now all we need to make is a c collective pitch rc plane

You guys really need to use this on the rotor dr1 series, would make for a killer bad guy drone!
Wow, look at miniquads now! ZoeFPV, 3Ding all over the place! Multirotors have come so far, from when Chad Kapper and David Windestal first did tricopters. Love to watch the old content sometimes...
This is the future of military drones. The future of helicopters too. Also imagine small quadcopters like Nano QX doing this stuff in the coming 2 years...
spazman13579 This looks better than the helicoter. Can probably do more. And 15 years ago or even 5 years ago the technology was not the same as today. These kind of quadcopters are kind a new. Didn't saw as many and as advanced of them 5 years ago. Future means future. It doesn't mean oh the helicoter was around for 15 years ago why no drones today? Its takes a few years to get the technology right. Look at the robot drones... they are only beginning to show their potential. But robots has been around for 40 years. Get it?
spazman13579 To be honest, this quad introduces all of the negative things you don't want in a quad. Collective pitch, belt drive/shaft drive, one motor are all bad ideas. Leave that stuff in the hard to trim and fly helicopter models.
***** Mostly because of all the mechanical moving parts that can fail. When they invented a processor that could control the rpm's of motors with fixed pitch propellers, the need for changing propeller pitch mechanically went away. On the positive side for propeller pitch control, flying upside down and doing in place flips becomes possible which 'normal' multi-copters can't do.

alishanmao you were the one who got me into redcat.
I think this quad is in need of a re-launch!
It was way too many years ahead of its time.
@@Mark-DibbleI remember watching this 10 years ago, time flies

Man, where is this stuff today? As a helicopter/fpv pilot, this would be the perfect combo!
Amazing-I wonder if there are any plans for a scaled down version too.

one of the best videos ever , i love it :) congrats to you Curtis
This is a great advance in RC
Jay Gambles ta rien vu en rc tu débarque !
Tareq you got one of these?..im looking for other guys in Dubai who do..maybe do our own version of the redbull races...:)
encore cette connerie d'engin c'est nuls !
Saw the Hall of Fame bridge in the background. Right near where I went to college!

Where did you go to college?
FliteTest

BTW - I'm on your site under username "rcbif" and have a few projects on there, and of course here on youtube.

Very nice! Now that you mention it I do recognize your user name.

Extreme FPV RC Racing....sweet. Sponsored and televised. That could be huge.
"HA"
says 2019
DRL
I completely love that heli - wasn't keen on how it looked at first - but oh boy can it fly. Kudos to the designer and pilot. Truly amazing!
My brother has been waiting for this ever since he first saw multirotors
Collective pitch mulirotor developments like this will soon give birth to the first gas, and nitro multi's!!! Anybody else stoked to see that!?!?!?!?!
I already saw a picture, months before this video, where a guy made a quad by connecting four huge gas powered helis by their tails.
Just wait until someone figures out how to construct a man-carrying version of this.
I'll imaginate that this spring but don't thinks birth so quick. Nice job.
Alonzo Branson
Whenever I think of human carrying collective pitch quadcopters, I think of the giant ships in the movie "Avatar"
Nicolas Otala In 3D I hope;-)
The simplicity of this design is just stunning..
That is incredible. What an innovative twist on multirotors. And that guy is an amazing pilot.
That is some crazy ingenuity. so simple yet complex at the same time I don't understand it. Looking forward to having something like that in the near future.
This is CRAZY to look back at!
This is a Mean machine! This design has room for so much potential in the future

WOW, Curtis Youngblood, Flitetest stepping it up again in a major way!!!
Must see more! I'd love to see more of the mechanics and flight of this. I'd say this deserved a 25 minute episode, not 8! :)
Wow !! You guys actually got the OG CYB on deck !! This a good look for you guys! Oh yeah I enjoy watching you guys evolve into better pilots and programmers! I've grabbed some great info from you guys regarding quads and tri's. Keep up the good work.
Amazing.... Great to see people who work outside the box. Thanks for the video.
Wow that is an amazing piece of machinery!! Well done Curtis!
geez!! That's the best quadcopter I've ever seen, great stuff!!
simply breathtaking. this multicopter world is balooning and I love it!

Can this carry a Go Pro on a 3D gimbals? Like a phantom?
As someone who's flown R/C Helis, planes, and on-road gas for many years....I want one!!

That does not answer his question.
Didn't expect to see you here
I'm sure it can, but it wasn't really built for that per se.
EpicWaterDrop I know right! people are so stupid
The idea he had of racing in the Grand Canyon is awesome! I'd love to see either FPV racing with planes or helicopters or quads there. It'll be like pod racing but on a smaller scale
That's great that Curtis finally got it out for the pubic to own damn I sure can't wait to see one up close in action someday at a flying field?
Ive never been much on regular quads but that one is a Game Changer.
Did not expect to be so impressed by this!
There's a lot of possibility
Beautiful!

Few will be able to afford the stingray but the ability to slice through wind and make smooth fast dives is the holy grail of FPV multirotor flight.
Hooray for Texas!!
Love the video, great craft and ingenuity. Really wish there was more to this episode...wanted to see David fly it! They had two, he couldn't even show us his attempt to fly? Would've been nice to see them race a makeshift course!
Actually had the opportunity to meet Curtis at our local Heli meet. Awesome guy.

Amazing engineering. Greatest quadrocopter I ever saw .. (sorry for my english)
Best Quad I've seen so far
We need to get our hands on one of these.
Great throwback episode. Phenomenal pilot!!!
This is absolutely insane!! I don't do anything RC but dang I've gotta have this!
Amazing. Makes me want to rethink my next investment. So light and agile. Variable pitch is dope.
curtis youngblood is an icon. glad hes from good old texas! but seriously, this guy just took it to a whole new level. quadrotor racing. YES PLEASE
Geez I can’t get enough of David’s hello at the beginning
holy cow... is this the first kwad?
This is still one of my favourite episodes
I want to see David fly it!
yeah that would be very cool
Too hard for him, nobody at FT can fly 3D
Very amazing. Thank you for this perfect video
That is just about the coolest thing I've ever seen! WOW
Curtis you invented an amazing quad :-) You made history in rc-heliflight again !
I would love to see an updated version of this!
I would love to see the Flite Test guys do there own hands on review of this awesome quad
how has this thing not blown up!?!
And this thing was never heard of or shown off again.
Wow multi rotors just took a whole new track with that baby.
and only one motor, and autorotation is now possible with a multirotor.

BTW stubby, have you become a flat earther yet? If not I suggest watching _Level with Me (2023)_ by Hibbeler Productions
wow! this guy is the future of quads!
Holy crap, i want!!!! Best of all the 3d axis worlds.
I am just curious, how does that achieve yaw motion with neither a tail rotor nor a diffrence in motor speed?
Such a nice idea and as David says, an amazing pilot.
That's just sick! :P And all on just one motor.
Curious: Is it more efficient to run a motor on each rotor or a single motor to run all the rotors at once? Or is it just a matter of tastes?
A huge breakthrough in multirotors! and more impressive than Amazon using multirotors to delivery products one by one in the very distant future.
I was a bit skeptical at first but now IM GETTING ONE!
I WANT ONE!!!!
dude is unreal. thats amazing flying.
Josh and David from FliteTest & Curtis Youngblood, with his Stingray 500 3D Quad Copter, simply Amazingly Awesome :-)
this looks very cool, would of liked to see Josh and David fly it and hear their feed back
Absolutely SPECTACULAR!
IVE been waiting SO LONG for this
most crazy video ever, this guy is a genius, plus an awesome pilot!
The real game changing part is having autorotation and the FC is designed by a real EE pro. Love his stick arrangement.
Man that was awesome! I always wanted to see one of these in action. ☺
That is so completely unnatural...I LOVE IT!!! CP quadcopter, pure genius.
woow!!!!!!!!!!!! thats awsome.. glad i didn't get an ordinary quad just yet.. i knew something good is coming up..
Do you think you could make a swappable EDF?
Brilliant design wish I could buy one
2020 And I still can't buy a fullsize version...
Am I gonna have to build it myself?
Electric or Turbine...
This looks Awesome!!!! Very well designed!!!!
Finally someone had the same idea I've thought about that but I am only 14 so there is no way I could make one. Good job on the the quad. Now all we need to make is a c collective pitch rc plane
You guys really need to use this on the rotor dr1 series, would make for a killer bad guy drone!
Tick Tocks (however is spelt) from a Quad. Freaking amazing! Super sweet!
That honestly looks cooler than regular 3d helis.
Great Video!!...one question though, how dose the yaw work if there is only one motor?
I want to know it too i just dont get it HOW DOES YAW WORK????
Makes me ponder what it would take to do a variable pitch tri copter.
Bring this back!
This design is so epic!
Wow, look at miniquads now! ZoeFPV, 3Ding all over the place! Multirotors have come so far, from when Chad Kapper and David Windestal first did tricopters. Love to watch the old content sometimes...
I hope we have some Cars in the Future they can fly like these cool Thing!
Amazing Quadcopter! Great Work Dude!
Awsome video i hope to get one some day alittle exspensive for the kit but would have alot of fun with it though
This is the future of military drones. The future of helicopters too. Also imagine small quadcopters like Nano QX doing this stuff in the coming 2 years...
This idea is based off a 3D helicopter, which have been around for 15+ years. How is this the "future of military drones"?

Dasdfjkl If a single motor on a quad stops working, you're going down anyways.
