I most certainly agree. I am really glad that hardwarecanucks has grabbed some major sponsors and increased their content output significantly in recent times. Especially case reviews and sound equipment testing is amazing and provide much in-depth detail not found anywhere else (at least not as compact and nice to listen to). Mix in some display reviews on the channel and I'd be even more happy :D Although I already subscribed ages ago.
7 Years later, this laptop can still handle some modern games, at 30-40 FPS at medium. Although I did rebuild mine customly so the CPU (i7 4940MX) and RAM (16GB) are significantly upgraded.
I agree this is the first real review I have found that covers elements such as heat/cooling. I was surprised to find these things overlooked in most other reviews as they are major criticisms for gaming laptops.
It's a decent laptop if you're on a budget, but I prefer the GS series, it surprises me that even though the GS line is near ultrabook thinness the GS actually stays considerably cooler (and quieter) than something from the GE (and GT I might add) line while maintaining the same graphical power.
Thomas K Its also a great way to get dust and the like into your laptop, and given I have never seen a laptop with factory removable dust filters and opening one up to clean it voids your warranty, this is a major issue. Also top intakes struggle if you try to run the laptop with the screen closed, which is a major annoyance if you run an external display. Personally I'd just like to see more laptops that have correct use of heat pipes and vapor chambers, these have been common in desktops cpu coolers and graphics cards for years (including the nvidia reference cards). Basically the use of unassisted copper or even aluminum heat sinks and low diameter blowers results in the poor performance that has become the normal in the laptop market, and saves only $30-$50 at most off the price of these devices.
Thomas K Thats cool, its hardly a common feature, but does it work well enough? For instance at the filers easy to clean, do they block much airflow ect?
Thomas K except the top intakes do nothing since these notebooks are still overheating and throttling at 94 degrees for normal gaming sessions after about 10 minutes. I had 2 gs70 ghost pros, even changed the thermal paste... Still crap. Take it from me, the gs/gt/he lineup need to be redone with cooling and noise in mind. For now the G750 from Asus is still the best for those. Nothing comes close to cooling.
i love your reviews, they are so interesting and give you more info than anything! well good luck with your new videos hope you the best for the future of you're channel, from a loyal subscriber Kishen
Your videos are just so amazing. Were you a film director, or a cinematographer before you made UA-cam videos? And your reviews really cover everything and probably the only UA-cam reviewer I have seen that has 0% Bias, if there is a problem you will mention it. The thermal imagining thing was amazing, never seen someone use that before.
HardwareCanucks I am thinking about buying this laptop with the same specs except it has an i5-4200h processor instead of the i7, is that going to make a huge difference for gaming? And can i still run games like bf4 on high quality?
An excellent review! I have been using the GE70 for two years now and I can concur that this review is SPOT ON in all aspects. While the downsides to the GE70 are not significant enough for me to consider a new machine at this time, the machine is PAINFULLY slow ... something I wish I had addressed on day 1!
i still use this laptop now in 2020 ahahah, works like a charm, had to take out the hd and replace it with an ssd though but other than that... 6 years and still running well.
I bought this model and I regret nothing. The shop I bought it in put in an SSD without warranty void and it's hella fast. Without the fan on, it's super quiet from my experience and the material doesn't look that bad if you take some care with it. The keyboard is definitely a wow factor among my friends and the sound is really loud with great quality. Overall great pc. Great review.
This is definitely one of the best reviewers ever. Really helped me before I decide to buy this laptop. Most of the cons don't really affect me, as I don't expect to game on the go (without a charger), nor do I expect to take my laptop with me unless I need to work on extensive PC software, as I will have a tablet for everything else. Speaking of tablets, this laptop is compatible with the new Nvidia Shield Tablet, which can remotely play games from your GeForce GTX computer right on the tablet from anywhere with a WiFi connection. The tablet has an optional controller (you need it), much like an xbox controller. So the Shield Tablet could play any PC game remotely so you wouldn't need to take the laptop anyway. This way you can game for a few hours (the tablet doesn't do any of the hard work, only 1080p video rendering and data transfer). I have to admit, this laptop is a great deal, especially if you're a student, as you can purchase it via the Windows Store for only $1169 (Lists an i7-4701HQ compared to a 4700HQ, not that it makes much of a difference).
PFFF you can easily change the underclocking settings in the performance tab under power management, I've done this on my laptop however prepare for a very short battery life. (This is assuming they haven't done some weird bios thing)
From a performance standpoint you do suffer, but given the notebook draws ~100W, underclocking the components makes sense to maintain within power limits of the 49Wh battery.
HardwareCanucks Even my i3 laptop with a gt630m draws about 80W under load... and even then, that's under load. Most of the time its using barely anything (lasting up to 4 hours on a 47Wh battery), and windows automatically underclocks the processor depending on the requirements. I'd much rather have the ability for a snappy processor (ie rendering a 30s clip or compressing a file quickly) and potentially using a chunk of the battery to do so, because honestly, if you don't have the laptop plugged in, what are the chances you're gaming, so why does it need to be limmited? A very poor move in my opinion.
Today i bought this one but with upgrades 16ram and 7200 rpm 1 tb .Because of this video i was looking so bad for the cons but after all day use there are no fingerprints on it and its really silent, when u turn on the turbo fan you have to put your ear on the left side of the laptop to hear it ... This laptop is awesome ,totaly a DOPE especially the keyboard !!! (NO FLEX he got a defect one probably or mine is fixed i dont know ...) Amazing laptop Buy with confidence :)
Hi, I contacted MSI and they told me the sticker at the back of the computer doesn't really matter! As long as you have proof of purchase, the warranty remains valid. The sticker is just there to discourage noobs from messing up the laptop. You should have mentioned that once the back panel is removed, you can install up to 2 mSATA drives that ARE capable of RAID! I just did this on my GE70, and no longer need to listen to that stupid hard drive, which I have allocated for mass storage while booting on a 128GB mSATA SSD.
I know this is quiet old but I ended up finding the 15 inch version like new at a pawn shop for $200.00 I was able to talk him down to $100. I am super happy to have this in my collection. Still plays most games quiet well
Very good, honest & excellent review, just what I needed to make my choice for my budget decisions. Thanks for your time, effort and professionalism. Best Wishes/Blessings Keith
I'm using GP70 where the back configuration should be around the same. indeed i can't fully remove the back cover while that last screw is covered by that sticker, but with the openings from other screws location, i can still manage to replace my HDD with an SSD, plus adding another piece of 4gb ram there. the only thing i missed out on is the msata slot for msata SSD, which i think is not applicable for the GE series.
I'm most likely going to get this, and I don't feel the paddy clicky thing, (don't really care what is called) is rough or anything cause if your gaming most people will use use a mouse
I literally just got mine, and came with a 1TB 7200 drive, so far its been running super quiet... although that fan does make a noise, but I guess the speakers make up for that, this is my first decent laptop that I have Ever bought so I hope it'll last as long as possible. I have also opted to buy a mouse separately as I always have trouble with track-pads.
I own one of these badass macihne but i found that the fan noise is reduced in the i7 47200 hq version compared to the 47100 hq version which my freind had i think its a lot of difference and msi didnt mention it on their catalog ... recomend this coz its run well maybe it get hot sometimes but it all done after putting a cooling pad under it
Subbed! Clean review and I very much liked the presentation. You identified the pain points well. I'd like to point out that the enormous heat buildup can cause more than just sweaty hands -the internal power socket can become "loose" over time to the point where you'll be unable to charge at all. Ref: 2nd GE70 in repair center for resoldering.
can you review the lenovo y510p model 95385820 id really appreciate that because i am planning on buying it. also can you give me a suggestion on which one to buy, between the msi or the lenovo? id really appreciate that
i bought this laptop in September of 2014 its now march 2015. a component burnt out on the mb rendering the wireless useless. it also popped up the blue screen saying dpc watchdog violation error. i have sent the notebook into rma for repair, hopefully this is not an issue with these models.
Can I get a metal briefcase type container to put this in that opens to be played if I am somewhere in public such as airports? Preferable with charger hole? It would be nice to have a lockable container so it won't be stolen.
Is the warranty sticker placed in a position where if you remove the back plate to upgrade components and you don't damage the sticker, then you don't void the warranty?
Love this laptop, might be 2021 nearly 2022 now but after customly rebuilding mine Upgrading CPU (i7 4940MX), RAM(16GB), and Storage(256GBmSATA + 1TB HDD), this laptop is still viable option for modern gaming at medium/low at 30-40FPS.
@@purple03282 Not tested it, however I have tested a pretty graphically intense game known as stormworks, it gets a good 60-70fps min settings at 1080p. I have also tested GTA 4, which uses a similar engine to GTA 5, and it gets around 54fps at high 1080p
Can you compare the MSI GE60 and GX60 (r9m290x + a10 APU)? They say the gx60 really sucks because of bottleneck issue but i haven't seen any comparison side to side bf4 ultra settings with the ge60 and gx60 can you recommend which is which?
Was looking at getting this, but the keyboard flex and warranty policy preventing user upgrade of ram, etc.. and lack of trackpad buttons ... is a deal breaker....
Maxi86inAction Maybe not the ram, but going from a single mechanical drive to a SSD is a major advantage. This is especially so in a laptop as often they are exposed to shock or used in a vibration inducing environment, which can cause stutters and lag due to emergency head parks and also quickly kills the mechanical drive, with the potential for loss of data in sudden deaths such as being dropped while running. Finally bootup times are much more important in a laptop since you will often shutdown and start the machine may times in a day. All considered the warrenty void if opened is a deal breaker for many people, hence manufactures like Alienware allow "basic upgrades" without voiding users warranty.
Your reviews are really excellent, much better done than other reviews I've watched. I would love to see a review of the MSI GT70 Dragon to see how it compares to the Apache and the Alienware 17 computers. I am thinking very seriously about getting a dragon but one review I watched said the temperature was reaching 98c yikes! how does it not fail when so hot? I do a lot of photography so it would be great if you could say more about the quality of colors on the laptop screens and how they compare to an IPS. thanks
Would you recommend this laptop for someone that pretends to keep playing video games by 4-5 years from now? I mean, do you think it will run future games as smooth as the ones we play today?
I hope you see my question !!! Does it only heat up when u play intense games like battlefield 4 ?? Or does it heat up even if you're using it like browsing the internet or whatever??? PLZ ANSWER QUICK :)
Really good review! I was actually considering getting this laptop... But with the flex in the keyboard, the awkwardly loud cooling fans & etc... Maybe not.
in regards to the heat the laptop is generating, i have heard that most of the time the heat the laptop generates, it damages the wireless card. is this true for this series and if it is, is there anyway to reduce such a risk?
it is nice on the design and the audio ... but with not good battery and too much noise ... i have only one question .. whats the name of the track on this video? i really appreciate :D
For an extra 130$ you can buy the upgraded version of this laptop and have a 128Gb ssd. As for the loud fan, for gods sake you are trying to play demanding new games on a laptop what did you expect? For the money you can build a very good desktop that has greater performance and is quiet. And try carrying that in the plane, at the beach, at your friends lan party, at your girlfriends place to watch a movie, at work etc. Point is, you cant have it all people.
Kurosaki990Ichigo Hey! What type do you mean by the upgraded version that has a 128Gb ssd? I was looking around trying to find it, but to no avail. I found a ton of msi models they are selling, but not the one which is similar to this, but with an 128Gb ssd for only ~130$ extra.
With a better battery and warranty policy I would have decided on this by now. Is there a better choice than this in the market now which does not weigh more and cost less than $1500 ?
How is the connection to the internet? Like the wifi chip. Is it one of the bests you can get? I really need to know because I have a big house. :/ thanks!
Damn I want the GE60 apache pro but it cost likes $2000 in singappre. Amd could you guys take a look at the gigabyte p35w v2 , it's a very slim gaming notebook with up to 870m.too bad it's not so popular
nice done video as allways! in this pricesection you can definitly find some more attractive laptops for both, gaming and working. the overall quality and the rather cheap mousepad is pretty dissapointing! also i think modern laptops, especially at a pricepoint over 1000$, should have a ssd as a standard inside, because i can easíly add a external hdd for collecting data. a 128GB ssd is rather cheap to get these days...
Bought this one few weeks ago, a little bit disappointing because a day after GT series got a discount :/ But anyway it's going to be really good for studies and some gaming for me :) Really great reveiw! keep it up!
I actually own this laptop and have had it for about 2 years. I have a question though, because recently I've noticed the temperatures are closer to 90°C (the throttling point, I believe) than I thought they were, but according to this review, hovering around 85-90°C is normal for the GPU? (The CPU is around 80-85°C).
Thanks for the awesome review! But you refer to the 1 TB 7200 RPM hard drive as "painfully slow"? Shit, man; if that's painfully slow, then I would love to see this laptop with one or two SSDs in it! My computer takes about 11 seconds to boot from me pressing the power button until it's complete. I can't imagine how much faster a solid state drive would be. I mean, I'm more than happy with what I have now. :)
Hello, i'm from brazil, and here this laptop with a plus 120 gb samsung 840 evo ssd costs 2070 dollars. My other options was to choose a clevo/sager with almost the same configs for 1970 dollars( 8gb ram) or one clevo with an nvidia gtx 850m ddr3 and a 15.6 ips full hd screen for 1570 dollars(8gb ram). In your opinion? What is the best option for me? In the end, this MSI is worth the 2070 dollars in my scenario? Thanks, and very nice review.
That's the laptop I got for my birthday it is amazing for gaming can pretty much handle anything I throw at it and really good for the price only downside is cooling and I got a cooling pad for it so I'm all good.
My CX70 from MSI has similar heat problems. These laptops don't have very good heat distribution/management, unlike their GS series. Not sure about their GT line.
Is this laptop worth it ? I would be using it for playing World of Warcraft and as I am a graphic designer I would be using Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Premiere and After Effects. These are the things I would be mainly using for. And I would be playing sometimes for like 5 hours of WoW. Do u know any other better alternative for around this price ? I am currently using Asus K53SV which is shit and is having some issues with the screen where it flickers in between. Not going to buy a Asus again.
I bought the same laptop but with a different configuration, I7 4710hq, 16gb of ram, 1 tb hard disk + a 128GB SSD, and of course the Gtx 860m 2GB ddr5, how would you compare it to this one you just reviewed?
I have a question. I'm completely confused because of choosing this notebook vs acer vn7-791g. Acer has a better graphic card, two fan but low contrast display. Which one would you prefer.
I got this laptop.. hasn't come yet... Unfortunately there weren't any reviews or anything when I ordered.... The photos looked amazing and I didn't think it was so shiny...wasn't expecting so many fingerprints.... Anyway.. This was my budget and being honest I don't think there's a better laptop for this price point. My other option was the Sager NP6268s... which now I'm thinking I may have been better off with.... Overall however.. I think this laptop is pretty awesome... Little worried about fingerprints and maintenance... Any advice on keeping fingerprints and dirt at bay? Been reading about rubbing wax and all that... is that recommended? Wanna keep my laptop looking new.....
Yea kinda guessed that would be the answer.. but as you said... don't wanna be constantly wiping it down.... Anyway.. Thanks so much for replying... Really love your videos.. hope you guys keep up the awesome work!

Interesting product, I was moreso impressed with the actual review though - outstanding quality, and extremely informative!
Can you compare the MSI GE60 and GX60 (r9m290x + a10 APU)?
They say the gx60 really sucks because of bottleneck issue but i haven't seen any comparison side to side bf4 ultra settings with the ge60 and gx60
can you recommend which is which?
Was looking at getting this, but the keyboard flex and warranty policy preventing user upgrade of ram, etc.. and lack of trackpad buttons ... is a deal breaker....
I think you would Not want to upgrade the ram weithin the First year of warranty, after that you can
Maxi86inAction
Maybe not the ram, but going from a single mechanical drive to a SSD is a major advantage.
All considered the warrenty void if opened is a deal breaker for many people, hence manufactures like Alienware allow "basic upgrades" without voiding users warranty.
my main problem with it is the sound!!! if its actually that loud while playing games, i would brake it instantly
My God that snow , Make the MSI like a Cold Blooded Killer and making it awesome review somehow :D
WOW!!
I´ve never seen such a good review before.
Realy good work!
Subbed + liked.
Super helpful. Thank you for pointing out the faults.
Maybe not.
Really good review! Trance music rocks too :)
Great review, incredible professional. I upvoted you.
in regards to the heat the laptop is generating, i have heard that most of the time the heat the laptop generates, it damages the wireless card. is this true for this series and if it is, is there anyway to reduce such a risk?
Nice review.. it got all the needed details.. hope you can also do a review on
MSI GT70 Dominator Dragon-1886.. THanks.
it is nice on the design and the audio ... but with not good battery and too much noise ... i have only one question .. whats the name of the track on this video? i really appreciate :D
Ivar Klootwijk he means that you have to pay for to get an upgraded ssd
Ivar Klootwijk he means through xoticpc or something www.xoticpc.com/msi-ge70-apache-pro061-p-6957.html?wconfigure=yes
yes
I want to know the specifications of the GTX 860m version of this notebook?
can tell me how many "CUDA cores" he has?
With a better battery and warranty policy I would have decided on this by now. Is there a better choice than this in the market now which does not weigh more and cost less than $1500 ?
I JUST got it :) 1tb harddrive, 12gb ram, i7
me too, yeeeeey
How is the connection to the internet? Like the wifi chip. Is it one of the bests you can get? I really need to know because I have a big house. :/ thanks!
Damn I want the GE60 apache pro but it cost likes $2000 in singappre. Amd could you guys take a look at the gigabyte p35w v2 , it's a very slim gaming notebook with up to 870m.too bad it's not so popular
nice done video as allways!
in this pricesection you can definitly find some more attractive laptops for both,
gaming and working. the overall quality and the rather cheap mousepad is pretty dissapointing! also i think modern laptops, especially at a pricepoint over 1000$, should have a ssd as a standard inside, because i can easíly add a external hdd for collecting data. a 128GB ssd is rather cheap to get these days...
Will this run minesweeper smoothly?
ilja elias Lenes no, you need an alienware
ilja elias Lenes no minesweeper has way to good graphics........;)
Only on low grapichs... Sorry :/
At 20 fps, if that's playable. lol.
So whats the best available if not any of those?
Bought this one few weeks ago, a little bit disappointing because a day after GT series got a discount :/ But anyway it's going to be really good for studies and some gaming for me :) Really great reveiw! keep it up!
How looks The witcher 3 in this laptop? and is there cover foils on keyboard and logo? before unboxing? before first use?
Where do you guys mostly get the wallpapers? It looks nice
Yes more gaming notebook reviews please.
7:00 i was like,what is that,a plane? a whashing machine?
Review GT and GS and perhaps someday compare the 3 of them?
The keyboard shouldn't flex like that and the ports should be spaced out a bit more, other than than I like it very much.
Hello? ;p
Nice review guys. If you plan to review more gaming notebooks, can you review the Auros X7? Thanks!
Yes, we saw it at CES 2014, and will be requesting a review sample :D
HardwareCanucks could you also Review the Asus G750 series , with Maxwell GPU.
Thanks for that review. So what will be good to buy instead of this laptop?
Hey great review ....I was wondering what is your thoughts on Aorus x7-cf1 17.3 gaming laptop and is it possible for a review?
Is this laptop worth it ?
I would be using it for playing World of Warcraft and as I am a graphic designer I would be using Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Premiere and After Effects. These are the things I would be mainly using for. And I would be playing sometimes for like 5 hours of WoW.
Do u know any other better alternative for around this price ?
I am currently using Asus K53SV which is shit and is having some issues with the screen where it flickers in between. Not going to buy a Asus again.
Is the trackpad really that messed up? I need to know because I'm gonna purchase this if I can't find any razer' around my local area
I bought the same laptop but with a different configuration, I7 4710hq, 16gb of ram, 1 tb hard disk + a 128GB SSD, and of course the Gtx 860m 2GB ddr5, how would you compare it to this one you just reviewed?
Does this laptop generate a lot of heat? And can I also add an SSD using as a boot drive and the preinstall HDD as a storage?
ofc it generates a lot of heat, and yes there is a config with on or 2 ssd's in raid
I cannot find my Keyboard Lighting settings anymore? I have no idea what happened.
Did u go to film school? Or is it just experiance. Ur reviews truly look professional
Just use a microfibre cloth!
Yea kinda guessed that would be the answer.. but as you said... don't wanna be constantly wiping it down.... Anyway.. Thanks so much for replying...
Really love your videos.. hope you guys keep up the awesome work!
