"That's the real story of the minotaur!?" You better believe it, Mark. Greek mythology gets downright weird in spots, and this is one of them. According to legend, when King Minos was competing for the throne of Crete, he prayed to Poseidon, god of the sea, to send him a snow-white bull as a sign of support. (As Crete is an island, having the god of the sea on your side was kind of a trump card.) The snow-white bull would then be killed in honor of Poseidon. Except, well, the bull was such a spectacular specimen that Minos decided it was just too good to sacrifice. Instead, he sacrificed one of his own bulls to Poseidon. Poseidon, being a Greek god, did not take kindly to getting short-changed. So, since Minos loved the bull so much, he made Minos' queen, Pasiphae, love the bull even more. She contacted the craftsman, Daedalos (or _Daidalos_ ) to build a hollow wooden cow, and... well, the pictures in the game cover the next bit. (They're from actual Greek art.) Being the unnatural offspring that he was -- a monster, literally a warning from the gods -- the minotaur turned savage as soon as he was weaned from his mother's milk. Being a monster, he had no natural food supply, and had to eat human flesh. On the advice of the Oracle at Delphi, Minos had _Daidalos_ create a massive labyrinth to contain the minotaur, where he remained until Theseus, aided in some versions by Minos' daughter Ariadne, killed him (in order to end the regular tribute of young men and women that were fed to the monster).
Nice too meet some one who has the same passion for Greek myths In some versions of the story Hera also cursed the king with a unhappy family when he was born became of Zeus being his dada
This comment is kind of a joke, just so you know. As much as I enjoy various Ancient Greek stories and the like, one has to wonder how that story would've turned out if the Cretians decided to make regular deliveries of _actual_ food to the Minotaur instead of just concluding that he just ate people. I know that he's a monster and all, but c'mon, no need to assume he _just_ eats people right off the bat.
Lmao... I thought I misheard that! Replayed, and YEP... He definitely said nipples. (Thinking about that, it would be sad, wouldn't it? A life with barely any nipples. Such a shame.)
So if almost everything was a hallucination, does that mean that the scene when he kills the dog stuck in a trap, is actually Jim finding his daughter asleep in the other room and strangling her there? If so, the moment when Diane screams when seeing Jim in the cabin could be his wife finding the daughter dead, and the scream somehow making it through to him. She calls the cops, Jim waddles around tripping, then strangles her, thinking she's Diane, and the cops burst inside just a few seconds too late. Wow...
wow...doesnt this imply that if Mark had chosen to ignore the dog then he might have gotten an alternate ending where Jim killed his wife but didnt kill his daughter?
The puzzle in the beginning refers to the birth of the Minotaur: the queen (Pasiphae?) was cursed to fall in love with one of the prize bulls (of whom the king didn't want to sacrifice). Pasiphae was cursed by Poseidon to love the bull, and so she snuck out in an enchanted bronze cow (made by Daedalus, who agreed to help her), and.. The Minotaur was conceived. It's the actual way it goes.
Sean Mark Winchester Dont forget that she had a bronze metal cow made for her to hide inside of so that the bull wouldnt kill her..... And she was forced to fall in love with the bull because her husband refused to sacrifice it to the gods.
The ending is quite obvious, to me, at least. Seeing as many people find it confusing, and also saying that the game is about the fourth wall breaking, I will try to explain it, and to justified that this game is only about hallucinations, instead of meta. So what is real and what is hallucinating in this game? Well, for the real part, it's up until the part where he consumed the pills, the interrogation part, and the final part where Jim drops tears on his hand. *_All else is a hallucination._* What happened in reality, is that Jim consumed the Horns given by the Pizza delivery guy(who want to spread disorder on society or something), causing him to hallucinates about the mansion. The hallucinations eventually lead him attempting to strangle Daine(the SM grandma), before he comes to realization for a moment, that what he had done, is instead strangled his wife and daughter. Most likely called by other people in the hotel, polices arrived and arrested Jim, and then the interrogation scene happened. Afterwards, Jim is without questions guilty for his action, and thus put into the prison cell for that. He slept while drowning in confusion and grieve. This time, perhaps dreaming, or still under the effect of the drugs, he dreamt that he is just a fictional character in video game, and a white door appeared in his cell, allowing him to escape back to his room, waking up on his desk. At this point, he is still dreaming in the cell, but in the dream, he thought that he just consumed the pills and fall asleep. The mansion, the cell, all just a nightmare, even the caretaker(who is now likely a manifestation of his inner voice trying to lie to himself) convinces him. Jim tried to leave his house to see his wife, his inner self, a.k.a the "caretaker", tried to stop him from realizing the truth. Through an absurd dream sequence where he utilizes gun and OS, he deleted and defeated his caretaker- the Horns - the maze. Alas, rushing to the hotel, he finally meets his wife. As he tried to reach out to her, he wakes up. In the cell. Well, moral of the story: don't eat drugs given by a pizza delivery guy, I guess?

This game's existence is such a revival of what almost every horror game is missing these days (Minus those like the Outlast franchise and many others, I'm sure); an overwhelming sense of dread and macabre atmosphere. The tension and build-up leading to well-done, subtle jumpscares, if you can even call them that, are absolutely great.
@@zombiecarnivore I think people think too much about the meta stuff. Sure it's overdone, but what of it? I don't think it should change your thoughts about it :)
Is this... Is this Stephen King the Game? This is chuck full of references to all his Books :O Either that or he was a huge inspiration to these people :D Absolutely magnificant :D
the art style of this game, the music, the general designs of the landscapes GENUINELY freak me out and i love it. an enjoyable nightmare, thanks Mark :)
I like the part where he arrives in the room with that hand sculpture and whispers "What the fuck..." and then the character also says "What the fuck..."
+Lexy Shannon oh my gosh yes, they're amazing, I especially liked the first and third, not so much the second but I don't think I read that one all at the same time, so that might've been my bad for breaking the experience. I totally recommend them!
I'm wondering if the meta-game ending isn't as meta as we're lead to believe. Jim was likely experiencing the effects of the drug in some way, be it a high or withdrawal. He kept saying that the murder of his wife "had to be a nightmare", and what better way to console yourself than to convince yourself nothing actually matters? And then bam, he wakes up. It was all a nightmare, a figment of a game dev's mind. He has the Caretaker to assure him he's in a game, and upon killing the caretaker what happens? He hallucinates his dead wife in a jail cell. I think the ending actually upheld all of the crazy stuff Jim experienced because he furthered himself into his head and refused to see the world for what it was: it _wasn't_ a game. The story of the Minotaur and the labyrinth is that the Minotaur _can't_ leave. Jim is now perpetually stuck in a horrendous reality shaped by fear.
@Joseph Park So the lore of the Minotaur is that Daedalus was asked to create a labyrinth so complex that the Minotaur is unable to leave, trapping it there forever. Theseus (some Greek hero) ends up killing the Minotaur in the labyrinth. While there's probably some other spin off of the old tale, the main story has it where the Minotaur is trapped and killed.
This game was a fucking drug trip in itself and I fucking loved every second of it. It seemed weird at first but I got really into it. The story was fucking amazing and the older gaming style of it was really nice too. Please play more games like this if they're out there because I adored this!! I love horror and everything about this was right up my alley. The fact that some aspects of it were handmade too... Fucking loved it, amazing game! Love ya loads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just rewatched this because I remembered how good the game was, but had forgotten the ending. Seeing the main menu screen at the beginning vs the end... The look on his face. He knows what is going to happen. But we just think it's a game. It's just a game, right?
I feel like Markiplier would literally do all of his narration even if we were nonexistent. Like especially when the singing comes on and he's like "is that your mom singing?" hahaha
Isnt a coincidence that this game is called Horns of Fear as like *LAYERS OF FEAR* as well? one was about an artist that was trapped inside his own "layered" hellscape because he was a pretty "bad" person, this is a guy that ended up as a paranormal journalist that always wanted to be an artist like the protagonist in Layers of Fear. The Minotaur's Labyrinth myth fits quite well with the game giving the sensation that you cant escape from your own twisted demons because they are from deep inside your own innermost darkness inside your heart, and when you start to wander off the path into the unknown you will end up losing yourself and everything you love and care, well at least is what i got from this game i think.
This will forever be my top inspiration for working toward being a makeup artist and special effects artist and maybe voice actor in the future. This is beautiful. It has a message. It’s unfathomably great. Pixoala rocks.
I see a lot of folks that are disappointed with the meta ending in this game. Personally, I agree with Mark. I loved every second of this game, and I'm satisfied with the story that it tells. You may disagree with me, as everyone has their own opinion, but, as I said, I agree that this game was amazing at every point.
it wasn't even meta. it was purely that jim murdered his wife and daughter under influance of the drugs (the granny and dog) the beginning and interrogation is true as is when tears fall into his hand, AKA him breaking through the drugs for a second to truly realize what he did

13:14 - 13:30 WELCOME TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY, MARK. Specifically, the myth of the bull of Minos. Daedalus is the one who made the wooden cow suit and built the labyrinth. He was also Icarus' dad.
+Ballistika Games It wasn't a torture device in the legend. In the legend, Pasiphae (the Queen of Crete) commissioned Daedalus to build her a hollow device out of wood and a cow skin, stretched over top, so she could wheel up to the bull in its field and get it on.
The myth goes more or less like this: King Minos competed with his brothers for Vrete's throne, and he prayed to Poseidon to give him support. The god sent him a white bull as sign of his support, but Minos had to sacrifice it later in honour of Poseidon. The thing is... Minos didn't do it. It was one hell of a bull, so he thought "hey, Poseidon just wants a dead bull, right? He won't mind if I keep this one, right?" But greek gods usually don't like humans not doing what they're told. And so, as a punishment, the god made Pasiphae, Minos' wife, to fall in love with the bull. She asked Daedalus to make her the hollow wooden cow that others have mentioned, and well, she milked the bull (in some versions, the bull was Poseidon himself, which would make the Minotaur a demigod). And well, Asterios (the Minotaur's name) was born, he was wild and ferocious, so the king orderes Daedalus to build the maze so the monster couldn't get out of it. As a bonus point, the bull itself (still alive) went on a rampage and started wreaking havoc on the country, because Poseidon wasn't satisfied with just some bestiality. Tl;dr: Don't mess with the greek gods if you don't want the weirdest sex sessions.
This is one of the best horror games I’ve seen in a long time. Especially from such a lesser known team. The fact that in the very last scene it shows that the damn menu screen was foreshadowing the end of the game is fantastic. The character design, dialogue and artwork were all beautifully done. The design of the Caretaker has to be one of my favorite horror monster designs, there’s something about his eyes that’s just...I don’t even know. Phenomenal game, amazing job from everyone who worked on it. I’m so glad I watched this. Had me hooked from beginning to end!

The most surprising thing about this is that the protagonist has the common sense to try and leave the building when the monster thing shows up.
Also surprising that he'd go to a mansion to do paranormal investigation when he just took a pill that makes him trip balls for days.

Good job trying to put this twisted, weird meta world together bro.
the "it was all a dream" is kinda lame, but it could be the case.
Why can't... the Minotaur leave?...
This is exactly what I believe and no one can tell me anything different.

13:14 - 13:30 WELCOME TO GREEK MYTHOLOGY, MARK. Specifically, the myth of the bull of Minos. Daedalus is the one who made the wooden cow suit and built the labyrinth. He was also Icarus' dad.
Is it a wooden cow suite or the bronze cow they used in tortures? I thought it was the hollowed out bronze cow that they lit a fire under
+Ballistika Games It wasn't a torture device in the legend. In the legend, Pasiphae (the Queen of Crete) commissioned Daedalus to build her a hollow device out of wood and a cow skin, stretched over top, so she could wheel up to the bull in its field and get it on.
@@r0b0t1ctree6oh.. Well shit I'mma have to look more into mythology and shit, that's just weird lol
@@r0b0t1ctree6 Pasiphae was the queen of Crete, Minos was her husband.
The myth goes more or less like this:
King Minos competed with his brothers for Vrete's throne, and he prayed to Poseidon to give him support.
