The important thing is that we remember to delete all robot-kicking videos before the robots get smart enough to watch UA-cam. They wouldn't be so happy after watching their ancestors get kicked by a human. That's how we'd end.
The really cool thing about the Boston Dynamics robots is that the fact we kind of feel bad when we see them kicked and toyed with is a great indicator of just how well they're programmed. Because we see them react as we'd expect it triggers an empathetic response, which means Boston Dynamics has really nailed the algorithms to have them maintain balance, etc. the same way an organic, living creature would.

Even if the arm control (among other things) was up to par, there is still no real reason to make it bipedal. there's a very good reason why the bots getting shoved and kicked around are four-legged.
Boston Dynamics also has human-shaped robots that they kick around. While they are more susceptible to falling over, in some of their videos it is used to demonstrate how the robot can analyze its surroundings to quickly get back up on its feet. The 2-legged robots from BD are shown in demonstrations picking up and moving heavy objects, so I get that is one purpose of making something 2 legged. But the Method robot is far from achieving anything close, even when they have such a huge budget.
Being bi-pedal does have advantages, a bi-pedal robot will be smaller and therefor lighter, it will also (in theory) be more maneuverable, we also have a really easy time gathering data on bi-pedal motion because humans are bi-pedal (if you didn't know) and whereas gathering data on wild animals or just animals in general can be difficult for a variety of reasons humans can easily participate in experiments and perform tricky actions on repeat.
In theory it would be best to have both, monkey around and then stand on its legs to lift and carry things. Designing the feet is the most difficult in my view, as stability starts at the ankles, where you need fine control but it also supports the entire weight. Also you would need leg extenders to mimick the hips etc. To be honest mimicking human walking is not that difficult, but simplifying it is. Even when we get it down, which shouldn't take too long if they are coding right, it will never be efficient, because the amount of parts wear is insane compared to wheels. They would break down all the time.
the ultimate goal is to have a full body control interface like pacific rim. and to look cool AF. if those aren't real reason to develop and build a bipedal mech then I guess you never watched anime or sci-fi as a kid. While having them walk in the DMZ is nonsense without a sufficient power supply... I could imagine a tethered robot still being useful in warehouses / factories - maybe. Depending on whether it can do stuff that a forklift can not do.
I wonder if we'll ever invent a semi-cheap power source that has a reasonable size and weight so that it can be easily carried by a robot, and that can supply virtually endless power. Like some kind of fusion cell or something. Relatively small power supplies that can produce copious amount of energy are one of the biggest hurdles in creating autonomous robots that can function independently for hours. Batteries have got really good in the past couple of decades, but they still have a really limited capacity, especially if they need to move something the size and weight of a truck. Internal combustion engines are, perhaps, the thing that currently works best, and is what's used in heavy machinery, but they are really noisy and polluting. But, maybe, they are currently the only reasonable option, until we invent small fusion generators that can supply gigawatts of energy for days at end.
you must have a gigantic D and a great writing team! your speech is flawless well suited to the context and all the jockes. I'm in love with this channel. Hope for the best to you and your team!
As a robotisist myself, I have to inform you that that big bipedal monstrosity is pretty much a china doll. It's cool don't get me wrong but if it fell it would pretty much break every part of it's body. It's kind of a problem with big bipedal robots in general, and by big I mean anything bigger than 10in.
Oh Captain my captain. I recently found out about your channel through the video of your (intern's) talk at the Blender conference. I love it! You're an inspiration. Please keep at it for a million years.
A thing or two about Vitaly Bulgarov 3D modelling process; he actually uses engineering software to concept a lot of his 3D work. This allows him to create components that can easily be adapted for real world scale 3D printing. Obviously hes not designing sub surface electrical components, but with the software he uses he can create surfaces that can house those components. The 3D cad data he creates can be used for computerized construction of the robot. This is why a lot of film studios love to hire him. He creates some super badass designs, and they can easily be constructed as an animatronics. He speeds that design process along greatly. Brian brings up a good point though about the movement issues he sees with the robot that touch on the fact that concepting something that looks like it has a good center of gravity doesn't necessarily mean it has a good center of gravity. As a 3D artist, you don't learn much about creating something that actually works in the real world, you learn about making something that LOOKS like it works in the real world.
Yeah, he kind of brushed Vitaly off as some scribbler. Vitaly is an incredible artist and guy. That kitbashing comment? Vitaly is the guy who makes the kits everyone else bashes with. I don't think there's another hardsurface designer in the industry who can make work that's so well thought out both functionally and aesthetically.
Surprising no one, it never went on sale in 2017. They've pushed the date back year after year and it looks like it'll never be a real product in its current form. They never figured out how to get it to walk and balance over any complex obstacles or how to transport the large amount of power it would need to operate. The legs aren't able to carry momentum like an electric car's wheels can so it uses way more power than an electric car, but can only carry a fraction of the weight so the big batteries of an electric vehicle are super impractical for a bipedal robot.
Been going on a bit of a binge with your videos lately. And while it was a short mention, love the little nostalgia trip near the start. Heard the music and thought it sounded familiar...and then you showed the locket. Funny enough, I have a DVD of the movie sitting right next to me. That said, I love your videos...and I'm gonna be a very busy person playing catch up since I found your channel.

Internal combustion engines are, perhaps, the thing that currently works best, and is what's used in heavy machinery, but they are really noisy and polluting. But, maybe, they are currently the only reasonable option, until we invent small fusion generators that can supply gigawatts of energy for days at end.
I really like that little nod to the Blade Runner: Final Cut DVD "suitcase" @ 01:29 😊
you must have a gigantic D and a great writing team! your speech is flawless well suited to the context and all the jockes. I'm in love with this channel. Hope for the best to you and your team!
Amazing how you showed a picture from Flight of the Navigator and some years later you upload a video explaining every detail of it
Always so excited when I get a channel notification for you!
the fact that Netflix hasn’t given you a show yet is stupid as hell
Thats exactly what I think LMAO
i prefer watching captain disillusion on youtube more than on netflix
holy shit imagine how much money netflix would make h o l y s h i t
@@catapillie UA-cam originals?
@@prateekpanwar646 eh. don't think so. i think CD is just fine like this, to be honest.
Please keep at it for a million years.
the Classic Necklace CGI Was a hint for Flight of The Navigator, or maybe He... You know LOVES THE MOVIE
Alan loves it. Captain doesn't.
Love when your notification pops up!
Victor Ventresca Support him on Patreon and you could have watched this ten minutes early ;)
Victor Ventresca same!
Yeah, and he recently worked with Boston Dynamics on Atlas' shell.
Also he’s hot
@@WinglessWallaby Appearance of functionality doesn't make it functional
@@noxabellus "Both functionally and aesthetically"
"Remember how the first ever use of CGI reflection mapping in a film..." Your intern sure does!
Loving the ‘reaction’ on kicking the Boston dynamics dog-like robot, gets better every time.
“This thing is not taking my job Brian!” lol
This is why I only create practical robots
Wut??

look buddy, now im an engineer, that means I solve practical problems.
0:02 And 4 years later, he actually made a video about that!
I mean, eeh, Intern Alan did
The heart locker makes a lot more sense, now!
I live for Captain D getting angry at the various clips of the robodog being kicked, lol
I swear this channel NEEDS to blow up. Too much quality!
When it's 2019 and you have never heard of this machine that was supposed to be released in 2017 lol
I'm ready to be disillusioned yet again!
Damn, I just got that flight of the navigator reference for some unknown reason.
FYI the demilitarised zone is the most militarised area in the world. Mildly ironic
2022 and again Captain was right as always
0:09 Yes Captain... we remember 😌
It's almost late 2017, where's our perfectly lit, shiny giant robot
ua-cam.com/video/8MK8ghffDcI/v-deo.html Jin Ho Yang is lier and arrested.
The fact that they never thought to give it more legs for stability is crazy.
Man, that NASA engineer has D&D 3.5e books on his shelf. This feeling? This is pride.
One day we will get a Long D, and it will be great.
Not unless CD responds to those spam emails. :P

I bet captain is really offended by the silver surfer too.
It's 2021 and I never heard of that robot being a real thing. Just like the phone bracelet.
It’s 2020 & both the comments about “The Method” and “Boston Dynamics Robot” are quite accurate so far! While the former got a reboot, it is yet to gain real world traction but the later is now slowly getting to hit the shelves of top tech reviewers on the planet (talk about terrifying)! This guy isn’t so disillusioned after all 😃
Oh shit, it's the ship from the Flight of the Navigator again! 😉
Haha, are you also going back thru CD's videos after watching his latest? Each video is always so phenomenal, I absolutely adore the guy. Hope you're having a great weekend, man 😉👍🏻
Yo 4:33, that fan art is BOSS. 😂
"And give him a taste of his own medicine!" *rolls up sleeve in anger*
Some of the best material on UA-cam. You are dope, Capt D!
Its been 2020 and this robot yet to exist

Flight of the Navigator is one of the most underrated movies of the 80s
When you only realize now that the metallic vehicle in the beginning locket is from flight of the navagator.
This guy is made better content back in 2017 then I have seen in like years
AAAAH The Music INSTANTLY threw me through Nostalgia land. I LOVE FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR!!!
2023.....still waiting on that robot to drop, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany day now.
Ha! I'm binging old episodes because I just saw the Flight of the Navigator episode!
It must be hard to put on that flesh coloured paint everyday
As a time traveller from the year 2023 i can confirm i have never seen this thing and we have yet to have battle mechs in war
nice foreshadowing, the flight of the navigator necklace and then last year you made a flight of the navigator video almost 5 years later!
2020 and I haven't heard of this since then.
it's been 6 years and i just noticed the thumbnail...

0:04 what film was that? I would love if you could tell us more about it... 😉
I'm from the future ... just found out the 'version 2' ran out of funding in 2019, and the company behind this expensive mess was audited in 2021 by the Korean government.
Hmm, that 'metallic sci-fi vehicle' seems very familiar...
You deserve medal for that thumbnail.
