Pull-the-Tail Flapping Butterfly

  • [Rather Simple] How to fold an origami butterfly that flaps its wings when you pull the tail. This model borrows the action mechanism of the traditional flapping bird. If you have trouble making the butterfly flap, here's what to do. Learn how to fold the traditional flapping bird and then come back here and try again. Here's my flapping bird tutorial: • How to make Origami Fl... but for your first try it's best if you use just one sheet of paper rather than stacking several. The flapping mechanism of this butterfly is the same as the flapping bird, so if you master that model, this one should be a lot easier. The idea to design a pull-the-tail flapping butterfly was given to me by Andy Mangal (though I've probably attempted to do it before as evidenced by this video • Bulldog / Butterfly / ... which is also a pull-the-tail butterfly but looks more like a crane).

I have a question, Jeremy. How do you come up with all of your original origami models? Do you just say, "Hey, what happens if I do these folds and see what it looks like?" or is there some sort of process or way of folding it?

This flapping butterfly is a bit harder to fold than the traditional flapping bird, but it flaps just as well, at least it should, since it uses the same flapping mechanism. But I think this butterfly's flapping mechanism even works a little better because it's less likely to tear at the tail than the traditional flapping bird. That's because the tail comes from the middle of the paper instead of from a corner, so it does not have any raw edges which tear easily. Were you able to get it to flap?

Sorry you're having trouble getting the wings to flap. I recommend learning how to fold the Traditional Flapping Bird... ua-cam.com/video/y49BzQiNuJ4/v-deo.html and when you can make that one flap, come back here and try again. It's the same mechanism so it should be lot easier.

You don't need to make a tutorial of it, so just tell me if you want me to do that. Thanks, and Happy Folding!

When you do make the video, make sure that you post a link to it in a comment on the Super Deluxe Dragon video (not here on this butterfly video) so we can see it (I'll have to approve the link comment... and I definitely will!).
