To switch into 4 low you needed to put it in neutral. if you don't it will go right back into 2wd. So he was never in 4 low
+Lone Wolf Exactly
And if you look, only the rear wheels were spinning
right
+Lone Wolf LoL, too funny, the whole time he thought he was in 4wd. I don't know if he doesn't read the manuals, or what. He does it with the other AWD car reviews, too. Doesn't switch off VSA and wonders why they don't climb the hill.
Glad you noticed that. I looked back down at the screen to see only the back wheels spinning as the host seemed pretty confused..
Then he thought shifting into 4 hi did the trick, haha.
Any biased channel would've edited out the wheel spin part, but these guys didn't, and there's nothing wrong with the wheel spin since they weren't in the right drive mode. This, I believe, is a very honest unbiased review.
THat was actually really impressive offroad performance for a stock vehicle like this. I know it's built more for the street, but damn! I'm shocked that you were able to tackle that kind of terrain in that vehicle. Good job, GM!
I don't honestly think you had it in 4-Lo. It was only spinning the rear tires which shows it was only in RWD.
I agree that was definetly not in 4Lo, if it was in 4Lo it would have been the best way to take that hill and we would have seen some front wheel spin. 4Hi is not how you take hills at low speeds.
that's the traction control for ya. the traction control should be turned off in the first place at least while 4wheeling.
The 4WD selector was most likely set on 4-LO but he seems to have forgotten to shift into neutral to let it engage. 4-HI worked because it can be engaged without shifting into neutral.
That’s the key Greg. Turn of Traction Control.
Or maybe put it into 4 low to begin with.
Dave I don't think you were in 4 wheel low to begin with. Didn't see you shift into and out of neutral after engaging it, which you need to do to activate 4 wheel low. So you are still in rear wheel drive even tho the dial was in 4 wheel low.
mycrazyadventurescalledlife agreed.
agree and also Traction control turns off in 4 LOW automatically.
Dave your car/truck reviews are about the best I have watched and I watch alot of them. Thank you for all the information, keep up the good work.
Hope you feel better soon, Dave. It was so much fun watching your expression as the Yukon took on that last challenge. You were obviously in your glory. :)
Larry Stoecker Voice is almost back at 100% - had a rough go of it for a few days... this day was the worst of it - Dave
Thats the ORV park is by my house.
I watched a lady get her brand new Hummer H3 stuck in that mud puddle halfway up the door sills when it was full. She saw a lifted F250 take an outside line and thought it was the same depth all the way through. That was a costly mistake.
It is amazing how much that park changes during the seasons.
Glad to see a video of my hometown!
6:56 locking rear dif engaged. Gota love a locker! haha Very impressive for street tires.
I am very impressed with this vehicle and with the reviewers driving.
Now I know what my truck can do thanks to you and I will put it to the test this winter when it snows.
Couple comments:
- First off, it's nice to see a 'real' off roading video on a new car! A lot of 'off road' videos out there are sponsored events and are literally nothing much more than just a dirt road with some puddles. Nice job!
- Sometimes it takes a couple thousand miles for the engine, and drive train, to fully loosen up, so it's not uncommon for the MPG numbers to jump up between brand spanking new and ~5,000 miles or so.
- If the transfer case like the old versions (and I presume it is) you have to put the transmission in neutral to shift into 4 low. I suspect (and noticed when you went to climb the muddy bank) that it was never actually in 4 low.
Overall, a very nice job though and was a heck of a lot better than the majority of the 'off road' videos that I don't even bother with anymore! Well done!
Nice job putting it through the paces. I see plenty people already commented on the 4LO procedure.
Thank you for the review. I am looking for an SUV to go off road sometimes. This is a really nice car, with a lot of new technology and safety features.
I love when these big suvs are taken off road because they are so capable. Only if people did it more often.
I am with my 07 yukon slt xl. Just got it. And took it out twice to the Mountains. I'm impressed. I live in Washington State. So that drive I seen him take would be the same driving conditions here by Yakima, WA. I drive the nearby mountains. Go hunting and huckleberry picking. I love the space of the vehicle!
Whenever I'm in the area I go looking for any GoPro's Dave may have left behind.
***** Just bought a new one... now I have three for my off-road reviews!
I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it done. Although I will confess if I owned something that nice I doubt I would take it somewhere that rough unless I had to. How ever its nice to know it could in case you wanted or needed to.
I like his voice better this way, much calmer and natural :D
That was erythromycin impressive. You can see the lockers kicking in so cool
Awesome GMC Yukon)))
Made me smile every time that rear locker kicked in. 👍
Glad to see the off road reviews are back.
I'm sure the guys at GM really enjoyed your video! lol
SeaBass I hope so... based on this video alone, I think they're getting their fair share of exposure!
@@everymandriver you embarrassed yourself when you didn’t even know how to put the truck in 4x4
@@jrand6138 I really did, thanks, Karen.
My family has the very same Yukon but in white and we absolutely LOVE it! Not sure what he is talking about with getting 16mpg on the highway because we drive mixed city and highway and get 19-20mpg in it. It is so comfortable and quiet inside and we have had zero problems with it. I know many people are stepping away from GM since all of the recalls but honestly, and i can say this because we have had GM vehicles since the early 90s, we have never had a single problem with any of them. If you are considering buying the new Yukon/Tahoe I strongly suggest you do!
Really nice results considering that the Yukon is really a luxury SUV. I'm not a luxury vehicle person, but I have always liked the Tahoe and the Yukon.
If and when I get an AWD or 4WD vehicle to test.. I will take it off-road at this ORV park - should be a fun winter of driving :-)
Does it have a rear Diff lock. it should for an expensive vehicle such as this. I know other SUV with rear diff lock are 4Runner, Landcruiser. AMG G63
Toby Tyler
GM's diff lock is a lot different from what a 4runner or Land Cruiser has. The Toyota version is electronically actuated and locks at low speed for this type of use. Lots of others have similar selectable lockers - Ford, Jeep, etc. Anyway, the GM version requires a significant difference in wheel speed to engage, which basically doesn't work at slow speeds. It's more or less for boat ramps, but not really functional in most off road situations. I know from experience - I have had both. The GM version is pretty worthless.
Toby Tyler From experience, The GM version is very effective, They use the Eaton G80 locker, had them on my trucks for years, have never let me down, You Tube some comparison videos for factory lockers on trucks, The GM comes out ahead every time, as for durability, Ive gotten 200K to 350K miles without any problems, Everybody had their opinion, but I'm speaking from real world experience in work trucks, not trailer queens.
Justin Jetter The GM locker is very efficient. It locks in quickly at slow speeds. Justin, maybe your truck has no locker.
It was a special order truck. I thought it was so bad i had the diff cover off to see what was there. It doesnt operate at 0 differential speed and that by basic laws of physics means it cannot equal an electric in pure traction. The other issue is that the design is poor because it is extremely sensitive to manufacture tolerance of the weight and friction. Two g80s can have significant difference in rpm range variance before lockup. They are cheap and fit in the standard axle. Those are the only reasons they are used. They are not equal to selectable lockers in function or traction.
I get 18-22 mpg at 60/40 hwy/city in a 2015 6.2L Denali.. mpg does drop if you're cruising over 80 or with lots of city driving, though. Regardless, love the Yukon and Denali. The HUD upgrade is worth the money. Offroad I've had no problems in thick snow/ice going to and from a couple of of resorts in CO. Also, the auto-brake kicked in the other day when a car backed out in front of me. Would be nice to see some more video!
I have this vehicle. Its still all stock and some of the smoothest driving I've ever got to experience.
So awesome to see the Yukon is still a true truck off road
I just wish they wouldn't have made that bumper soooooooo low.
Mattb57 I know, I wish they would have made it removable like the Grand Cherokee's front air dam
Austin Gross They are very removable in the new gmc and chevys. It is actually shown how to in the manual.
Wow, getting up that 2nd hill so easily in 4HI is damn impressive for a stock vehicle - particularly a brand new one with (relatively) low profile tires.
+doctor zaius Personally, I would prefer 4 high for muddy stuff. You can get the wheel speed up a little bit and it clears your tires so they don't get mud packed and turn into slicks. Also, the Yukon has an automatic locking rear diff, which can be seen in action at 6:54 when he's got the wheels in the air. Stock wheels and tires aren't ideal for off-road though and they're meant mostly for comfort and quiet since pavement is where 95% of Yukons would spend their life.
Just got myself a Yukon and so far so good.
VERY impressive, Beautiful truck with extreme capabilities. I did not think it would make it up that muddy hill but it had no problems at all. Way to go GM, the previous model Yukon had issues going up and downhill. I was considering a different vehicle for my next purchase (Tahoe LOVER) but I may have to slide over to the Yukon.
carmencolumbusohio I had a good time in this ride. Glad you enjoyed it. Keep me in the loop on your next purchase. Share your photo with us on Facebook when you do :-)
First video I've seen on this channel and the host may not be super knowledgeable on 4 wheel gearing, or its uses.. haha, but I def enjoyed the video more than a lot of the other other offroad reviews. This guy isn't afraid to have some fun with it.
Skilled driving on that last trail, nice Dave.
I think it needs the adjustable suspension, so that way you can lift the truck and not worry about damaging anything. Such as the Range Rover, or the Grand Cherokee. I know it's not an extreme off-roader like a Jeep or Land Rover but it would still come in handy, especially with those low fenders.
My father has the previous generation in summit white (which personally I prefer myself in terms of looks). The new Yukon looks a bit...boxy, and over the top, but I'm assuming this is what men prefer? I'm glad to see GMC could increase the specs in many ways for the Yukon to continue holding it's own, but would everyone really 'abuse' their vehicle this way (off-roading and whatnot)? I know this is simply to accentuate what the truck is capable of but with an MSRP of $64,000+, my behind is staying on the city and highway. Great review Dave!
50ccc Glad you liked the review... I aim to inform and entertain.
Sweet test drive. I see that G80 locker at work :D
Head's up to y'all who can't seem to wrap your head's around that this truck can do exactly what it is made to do. Dave proves this, and by the way if you don't have nothing nice to say don't say nothing at all.
Awsome off road test, Keep it up
To those haters saying the Suburban is not an offroad vehicle, you obviously have never owned one! Keep on driving your Prius' and shut the hell up. The Suburban is a quite capable offroad vehicle and I have driven mine over trails you couldn't even walk!
That car Suits you bro!
Thanks for the great video :)
Hassan Abdulkarim I agree, I can see myself rollin around town in this vehicle - Dave
Nice review. Enjoyed it.
just notice when you are in 4low only the rear wheels are spinning, the time you going uphill then you switch to 4hi the front wheel engages, then you make it uphill, did you notice that in the video dave?
Awesome review
The Tahoe and Yukon, look Incredible in the Outside, but the Trunk and the 3 row, are Ridiculously small.
I bought the Expedition 2018, because it's bigger, but I like the look of the Tahoe and Yukon
I'll keep my 14 year old lx470 and do circles around this fancy minivan.
+Fnasser Sounds good, thanks for your feedback.
LX470 is a fantastic vehicle but to then call the Yukon a minivan. I sense you are anti American from your very limited response.
Pretty impressed with this vehicles capability!
Got to love the gm lockers
Unless you get the Denali, you may as well stick with the Suburban, save a few thousands, and use them to upgrade the offroadability of the vehicle.
Great video!
My favourite car forever 💚

Hey Dave just curious, is the Yukon available with the Z71 off road package? I was trying to spot a decal but didn’t find one.
Good video Dave, comments in here are ridiculous. Im a single guy, and I get a lot of use outta mine. Of course were not rock climbing in a Yukon, but if you want to take it out hunting on the trails, this proves that you can.. ignore these dumb comments.. keep up the good work bro
PLUS i haven't ridden in a better riding vehicle other than my Escalade which is WAYYYY over priced
And i have 11,000 miles on mine, and I get 21-23 mpg on the highway at 75mph..
Sick video bro!
Thats cool that todays trucks and SUVs can still do most of what 70's 4x4 trucks have been able to do the whole time. ... ..
Great video!
it did much better than what I was expecting.
I like it =D and I definetly like the optional 6.2 v8 engine thats sounds nice
This is all the more impressive considering it was basically in 2WD and on street tires 😅
That G80 kicks in and that truck dug in. I love the G80 on a stock vehicle
Very impressive off roading ability
I wish one of these car review shows would test the GMC Savana 1500 AWD. I would love to see how it compares to full size SUV's offroad in stock form.
VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!!
Gorgeous SUV
Wonder how the Denali would handle? My 02 with the 6.0 gets 16.5 in town and about 23 highway
Have the exact car except mine is 8 seats but color the same, though never took it off road yet but looks fun.
Yes it has an automatic locking rear differential
All I can said is this car is a beast
What were the mpg numbers after driving it a while? Interested...
I have a problem too. mine goes up and then starts back down without stopping, but if I wait until it is open an just started back down I can stop it with the key button. It will not close with the button if I do stop it? any help appreciacted.
19 GoPro cameras were lost in this video.
i on my 2007 Yukon Denali it is the bomb the best vehicle I ever owned
وحش
sure you were not in 2wd at 3:40 ?
I'm 100% sure he was :)
Yeah i think when he tried to go 4 low he didnt transition to high first. In all my GMs I hsd to go to high then low or it would blink and never switch.
I don't know if it is the same for 2014-2015 models but in the early 2000s Blazers and most likely Suburban and Tahoe models you have to be in neutral for it to switch into 4lo. When he flipped the switch for 4lo it did not go, it just blinked and that's all it will do. it will blink for a pre-determined amount of time until it gives up waiting for you to put it in neutral and will revert back to 2hi. The camera cut out right before it showed whether or not it actually engaged 4lo but based on the video footage of before and after I would say 4lo never engaged and he made it up the hill in 2hi. If he had even been in 4hi it would have gone up that hill no problem, let alone 4lo.
Jayj93pgt you HAVE to be in neutral to have 4lo to ever engage
the front wheel do about 20% of the force when the vehicle is in 4LO
Can you do a driving review of the 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty 6.7L powerstroke diesel?
Ya Dave, to put it in 4low you have to put it in neutral and then turn the nob to 4low
could you do an expedition el or a normal or a escalade esv?
:D I don't understand the utility of the secondary camera that shows you talking the other direction
NICE!!!
Will The Denali drop down to 4 cyl's as well?
What watch are you wearing in this video? Thanks,
wooow GMC is the reel man
That car looks very dependable.
Some Chevy's are built to last as well; we just spent $50 in gas off-roading in loose dirt, come check out the video we made with DSLR's and GoPro's.
Test drove it. We are getting the Lincoln Navigator after driving the Yukons and Tahoes. Visually I thought the Yukon and Tahoe was nice inside and out. Rear seat is not good for bigger kids or adults in the Yukon or Tahoe where the Navigator definitely does. The floor height is cramped with the solid rear axle underneath in the Yukon and Tahoe, where in the Navigator your feet are not cramped because the Navigator has rear independent suspension. The Yukon and Tahoe doesn't have independent rear suspension so when you drive you notice that the vehicle doesn't have as good of a ride as the Navigator. Steering the Yukon and Tahoe took way more work but I did like the thick steering wheel where the Navigator steered effortlessly. Gas pedal on the Small V8 is so restricted to try and get good gas mileage. The 6.2 was well powered and didn't have the same lethargic gas pedal but on the Lincoln Navigator the throttle response was not just amazing but powerful across a larger power-band. I don't think the 6.2 would win zero to 60 nor do I think the 6.2 could out pull a full trailer as well.
Get a Tahoe or Yukon. The new navigator is hideous and the Eco boost is less reliable than the GM v8's.
If you are patriotic then go american but if you are not I would most certainly go Toyota as their off road vehicles are some of the best in the business.
I have a land rover and Toyota land cruiser. They are both amazing off road but the Toyota never breaks down were as I cannot say that about the land rover discovery though.
We are going to test drive the new Expedition tomorrow if we have time. Since its $12,000 less for the same exact quality and amenities, and it doesn't look stuffy. We liked the Tahoe and the Yukon and are probably going to go test drive them again to have a more recent reference to compare tomorrow test drive of the Expedition. Yes, I prefer to buy American. Specifically made in the USA by American companies.
Take note that the new Tahoes/Yukons are not hydraulic steering anymore, they're electric now. I'd say you go with Ford if you always have to carry 6 or 7 adults because the 3rd row in the Ford is much larger than the cramped 3rd row in the Tahoes/Yukons. If you're on a stalemate of which to get, go for the one with the best out-the-door price and financing.
superb...!
So, whats the use of the low ratio if the 4hi could go up inclines better?
He didn't out the transmission into neutral before shifting into 4wd-low so he was in 2wd
Since GMC is the truck pinnacle for GM, they should offer a purpose-built off-road package that let's it try to compete with Land Rover/Range Rover. It would be low volume, for sure, but would give the GMC brand bragging rights in this category given the size/cargo capacity disparity.
They are offering the Z71 on the tahoe and suburban
Rumor has it, GMC may be bringing HUMMER back.
I agree Greg, he is crazy and that's a fact. Men really just love to have fun and with someone else's toys makes all the difference ha, ha, ha.
i bought the big one :) it's good if you have big family XD but i just bought for drifting and having fun in desert :)
+fawaz bin yahya al-Otaibi you can always bring the family to the drifting fun
fawaz bin yahya al-Otaibi lol, nice 👍🏾

Video or no proof
fawaz bin yahya al-Otaibi yalla Ruth ya hajia
And again, this is the first time I have seen someone use 4hi because 4lo was not good enough, to tackle an offroad section. I have now seen everything.
Is the front a locking differential as well? 6:52 that was neat
👍
It combines city and highway you get a better rating with instant economy
Ok i'm sold, now i just need for the COVID vehicle prices on to drop back down still way too expensive.
solid axle/locking differential/Diesel would be really nice
This guy sounds like he would make a great #1 Country Song
What color was this Yukon that you tested?
I feel as though I jumped to conclusions with the price tag. If this is the standard SLT, then it's slated at $47,000+. My bad Dave. Even still, great review.
50ccc It's all good. Glad you liked the review.
You could see the locker work on that one section
