I was in the process of buying a used 2017 out of warranty, but after watching your video & doing some more research cancelled. The answer to "what can go wrong" is literally everything. Minor annoyances, and all important major components (engine, transmission, suspension, climate, electronics). This is coming from a Toyota background where I'm used to driving high mileage vehicles that have never needed anything aside from normal service - oil, tires, brakes.
I have a 2015 Yukon XL … don’t buy one lol
We have a 2017 denali xl extended warranty just ended and guess what having more issues make sure you have a warranty

The older ones were very bullet-proof, but today they are more and more complicated, but the newest one recently out is like totally full of electronics and likely will be a nightmare.
Don't buy one...better off getting a toyota highlander.
I have been LUSTING after this truck since it came out in 2015, & i just started looking at it & decided to FINALLY get it this year 2023, but in December, when the markets TANK....But watching your video, has set me STRAIGHT.....I will keep my 2002 tahoe, with the 310k miles....Ive changed the basic preventative
maintenance on it, & the common rear end twice, & the transmission once, but besides that.... Its been Great....Thank you SO MUCH for the UPDATE, GREAT VIDEO
My mom has a 2016 Yukon XL Denali. She bought it brand new back in 2016 and it currently has 130,000 miles and has been absolutely flawless. From the day we got it, to now, we haven’t had one single problem with it and it has 130,000 miles now. It’s been an awesome car to have and she plans on keeping it for awhile longer!
Did she change transmission fluid?

Great review video Danny. We have a 2015 GMC Yukon SLT. Currently has 168,000 miles on it. I plan on doing a million mile challenge on it. The only major problem we had so far was the air conditioning not working on it a couple of years ago and the actuators for the back door sides opening. We got it fixed. The repairs were a little over $2,000 but we have an extended warranty with car shield so all we had to pay was $100 deductible. Our CS plan is $109.99 per month and unlimited mileage coverage. We bought the plan before our dealer warranty expired and are grandfathered in. As long as we keep paying the monthly plan it will always be good. I think it’s worth it in my opinion. We are going to keep our warranty plan in case the transmission ever needs replacement. Would not want to have to pay as it would be a lot for transmission or engine repairs and were fine with the coverage plan cost. We also had a fuel pump leak but that was minor and CS didn’t cover that. It was a little over $300 for that repair. Still love our Yukon. 😊
So carshield is pretty good
That's $1300/yr...... Open an additional savings account and direct deposit the $109/month from your check.
"The Chevrolet Tahoe Reliability Rating is 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 21st out of 26 for midsize SUVs. The average annual repair cost is $744"
You're paying almost double that a year.

Very helpful video on what to look for! Thank you.
Just bought a 2015 Yukon XL Denali 4wd with every option offered, including power retractable running boards. I'm excited but nervous too, because I've heard horror stories of transmission replacements and AFM problems. After a week so far, it seems to run great other than a code that says the O2 sensor needs replacement and a cracked windshield I'm already getting replaced. Once my windshield is done, I'm taking it from Texas down to Belize in Central America, where it's hot all the time and the AC blows cold so far in all 3 zones 🙏.
I have a playlist that should help with most repairs. Especially watch the thermostat one. I lost a regular lifter and deleted afm for its known problems, so my first two videos in the playlist are covering that repair

Hey Danny, like your video. Your compass and navigation issue is your antenna on top of the truck. I bought my truck used with that not working. Took it back to the dealership and they replaced the antenna under warranty and it fixed the problem. The design of the original antenna is poor. Water gets underneath it and it shorts out. The new design fixes that problem.
I see a lot of people talking about $1100 for the GPS antenna repair. It cost me about $150 and took about 20 minutes. VERY SIMPLE fix.
Wow. Great info! Thanks! My daughter recently spun out on the ice and wrecked my old 2003 Escalade she was driving. Had to give her my 2014 Yukon and hurry up and buy another. I found a 2019 Denali with 67k miles. Put a 4 yr service warranty on it. My biggest issue right now is I need a grill guard. Had one on the 2014. The adaptive cruise is going to be an issue with putting a grill guard on this one. If anyone knows a work around, I’d love to hear. There are Waaay too many electronics on this Denali.
I have an engine tuner for mine to shut off the cylinder deactivation. I get 20 mph on the hwy so I don’t get the point of the cylinder deactivation. I also change the transmission to shift later and firmer. The reason you’re compass doesn’t work is the gps shark fin leak and then it corrodes. I replaced mine with aftermarket one on EBay and it all works again. They do have several minor problems but still nothing comparable for comfort, highway travel and towing.
I own a 2018 Yukon SLT and really love this vehicle. I too suffer from moisture getting in under that GPS antenna and fouling the native map system. I'm not going to spend the $1100 bid to fix it as I just use Android Auto and get the maps that way. I've had it for 10 months and have already done 5 substantially long trips 1500-2000mi and really have enjoyed driving it! Had a 2013 SLT with 170k mi when the lifters decided to start playing games. Let that one go and I don't look forward to this one giving trouble in that same area, I hope.
The antenna can be had for $30-$50 on Amazon but requires pulling the head liner down a little to access. Mine has had a lot of issues with the worst being the lifters.

Loving the remote start.
You can adjust the nav sound as it is talking use the paddle volume controls on the back of the steering and it will make the volume of the nav louder or quieter but you can only adjust while it’s talking so be quick. Once you do that I will stay that way until you adjust it again.
Yeah, I gave that a try, still pretty quiet ua-cam.com/video/2FrN3iKH7nw/v-deo.html
Thanks a lot for the review….
Indeed I have 2018 Yukon SLE and I had a repeated problem in fuel sensor. Once I fill the fuel tank the fuel gage is not reading as per actual . After investigation the dealer discovered that the fuel sensor is malfunctioning. As it was covered under the factory warranty the local dealer replaced the sensor four times!!!!
Now the warranty period is over…
And I’m watching and hope not to see this problem happen again 😅
Thank you
My family has always had Yukons in one form or another, and this one is the absolute worst. In addition to all those 'little' problems, the transmission blew out at 80k miles. Not to mention the slow-as-heck infotainment system. Quality went out the window with this one.
I had a 16 suburban and the transmission went out and now I have a 20 Yukon and the transmission is about to go
I have a 2016 and just noticed a ticking in the engine. took to dealer and found cylinder 4 misfires with a bent push rod. they rebuilt that side of engine only and on way home check engine light came on. took back and they found that the misfires and unburned fuel caused the catalytic converter to burn out. that was replaced and back on the road after $4300 in repairs. be aware it can be very costly when this happens. also taillight and ac went out as well as the transmission at 53k. I like my truck and I'm thankful I got the extended warranty!! they say GMC is the upper line but I beg to differ! I f they are what they claim to be then GMC should Admit to these common issues and cover them!
Wow my car is currently at the shop because of this 😢😢😢
GPS antenna on Ebay for 50 dollars. 20 dollars for 3m silicone to reseal it. I told my kids it was Santa Claus mode as my navigation would just randomly fly around. Pretty easy fix for handy people. I have replaced lower AC line from the compressor. I had a the condensor replaced under warranty for a leak. I have had to swap out all the struts and air compressor in the back. I had a lifter fail at 150k and swapped out all the lifters on that head. I have fixed one of the tail lights for the bad joint connection. I had a bad ground on the battery connection that was improperly fixed by the dealer. I had to cut the original ground terminal off and install an after market one that fixed multiple issues. It's long list of issues on these trucks, but we do enjoy the car for my family.

I was told by a dealership that most factory batteries are designed to work 2 years nominally and then its hit or miss on when they will fail. Planned obsolescence.
New 2018 had to replace battery after just 3 years (Florida). I was told to not let it run in V4 mode for very long to protect the lifters. My driving habits, except when on long, flat, speed-control on, situations. I.e., long trips keep me from running in V4 mode very long.
It doesn’t require a data package for the compass and navigation and you can adjust the volume of the turn by turn. Mine turns the radio down when the navigation is talking
It may depend on the year for the navigation volume. It says I can turn it up and down but the voice commands don’t change. I was also told wrong on the navigation and found out it’s the antenna
That seems like a lot of nickel dime repairing for only 25,000 miles. I have had issues with oil cooling leaks and radiator, which dealer fixed under a service bulletin. I love my 15 Yukon Denali but it is exhausting. Seriously considering a Sequoia or expedition.
You should do a 2y update! I have a 2016 identical truck!

That was a fun one too ua-cam.com/video/cWayyZGNYRI/v-deo.htmlsi=xIaOQ1BfvQ7YH63K
I fixed most of those problem. Transmission will go out at about 80 to 100k. I had the same map problem which got better after fixing the attenna. Spare tire hold mechanism fails easly. I also had to fix the Wireless charging . The motor on passeger seat is very exposed making it prone to easy damage. If you have tv screen just get ready to replace after 1-2 years. Paint is terrible especiallh if you have a dark colour. Other than that its really spacious
What’s wrong with the paint? Genuinely curious
I’m planning to buy one is sad that they don’t make it better on those little details I’m always own one of this trucks for the last 25 years I own Suburbans , Escalade and 3 Tahoe’s this Yukon is next in my list
I agree. I love my 2000 Silverado that I am still driving with 250,000 miles. The newer ones are much more comfortable and powerful but not as good on quality
I bought my 2016 Yukon SLT used. It was two years old and I have had several expensive issues. Both brake lights completely stopped working, the console lid phone charger stopped working and the lid latch broke, the Stabilitrack is out and the message center keeps showing driver assist also is in need of service. There engine has a ticking sound and the A/C needs to be charged every season. The gaskets around the back door openings keeps coming off and the trunk latch broke. I noticed the hood was hazy a d I went to a body shop to get it checked and as I thought the paint is dead on the hood and the top of the vehicle from the windshield to behind the sunroof. I have already spent more money on repairs for this vehicle than I ever spent on my 2002 Chevy Tahoe LS. I am planning on this behind my last GMC.
I don’t blame you. I’ve considered going to an older 00-06 bodystyle for longevity but I do like the features and looks of this one, so I’ll keep fixing it and making videos lol
Did you ever get a diagnosis
60k miles on my 2019 and only problem I've had is it sometimes idles a little rough when I'm stopped at a red-light. Think I need the AFM delete and should be fine. Truck has been awesome other than that.
Afm delete module from amazon?
@@DavidDrayer yup i ended up putting one in and it never idled rough again- that fuel management is a death sentence for the internals
Re: the AFM and associated lifter collapses - if you have the "M" option on your shifter, just put it in there and it won't shift into 4-cylinder mode (so I'm told - my 07 Tahoe doesn't "M" mode). Or get the Range OBD device to software deactivate the shift down into 4WD. Another way to help prevent the lifters issue is to change your oil every 3k miles rather than when the oil range thing says to...helps prevent that sludge/gunk buildup that kills the lifters.
Change the transmission fluid every 30k, religiously.
2007 Tahoe 4WD/5.3 with AFM/226k miles. No transmission or severe engine problems to date. Only issues I've had are (1) it randomly shifted itself into 4WD at highway speeds, (2 & 3) a knock sensor and the dang Oil Pressure Sending Unit (x2) needed replacing, and the (4) charcoal canister needs replacing due to P0455 (Large EVAP Leak detected). Been incredibly comfy and safe.
Unfortunately, I had a regular lifter fail and took advantage to delete AFM/dod while I was there

hey Danny, Thanks for the video feedback. I came across this while searching for solution for my issue. My 2016 Denali xl shales at 70 mph and above. I balance the wheels multiple times, aligned the wheels 4 times, Put brand new tires and balanced and aligned. Now I changed the whole set of wheels (2023 Denali wheels) still no fix. I noticed that on highway speed while coasting it shuts 4 cylinders. That is when it shakes.
Your advise, suggestions and findings are valued and appreciated.
Mine just had a bad lifter so I am also deleting the 4 cylinder mode (known as displacement on demand (DOD) or active fuel management (AFM). Its possible the 4 cylinder mode is to blame and can cause worse problems when it fails. Its just a huge job, so youll see it soon on the channel. Try putting it in 6th gear manually to keep it in V8 mode and see if it helps. If it does you can buy the obd2 plug in that turns 4 cylinder mode off.

I used to have same issue, and we have two GM dealers where I live. First one refused to fix it as they claim it is misuse, the other lucky replaced it under warranty.
They had to replace the door hinge
The navigation and compass is the antenna on the roof problem..
Yeah, someone let me know that’s the issue. I was told otherwise
Mine leaked and started out like yours with my car showing me in Mexico, and the directions not working. It’s now in the shop bc the water leaks down into the control module located on the side of the dash by the steering wheel. All of that is currently getting replaced bc my car went haywire electronically and completely shut off on me while I was driving down the highway. You don’t have to have a subscription for the compass. I never had a subscription and it had worked when I purchased the vehicle in 2018.

If the lifters do fail swap to regular ones and tune out the v4 mode will never have another issue. seen these engines in the 400k miles and still going

If the fan also runs when the car is turned off it is most likely the thermostat being stuck open and causes the engine to run cold and throw a fault code and run the fan: ua-cam.com/video/7mJF5LQ3oPs/v-deo.htmlsi=3CJH4wW1fRS-i5dk
Oohh too many problems..... I'm not interested in buying one anymore.... it's best to get the Toyota Sequoia....😊😊😊😊😊😊
Not a 2024 or 2023 or. 2022
I am not able to find the product that you used to adhere the rear defroster back to the window. Same thing has happened on my Yukon Denali. Thanks
Had my defrost reattached at a dealer,$54 . Good deal working great
Great summary. Thank you. My 2016 Yukon has an intermittent problem with the "Tail gate open" warning comes on now and again when the gate is closed. Ever ran into that? thanks. Joe
Mine had the electronic latch fail, so if you hear the motor engage when it closes and you know it’s locked, it’s more likely a sensor. If not, keep an eye out for the latch motor ua-cam.com/video/5NcrxG8Aj6M/v-deo.html
My 2015 suburban lt will not pull my boat up a boat ramp, it won't try, you can hold the throttle on the floor and it will not rev up beyond a few RPMs off idle, but it will pull the boat down the highway perfectly, as it should, I have a hill on my property where I stopped on a steep incline with no trailer and it will barely start up the hill with no trailer attached, it's a 2015 lt suburban with 3.08 gears and no low range option with the 4x4 just 2 and 4 and auto options, this is my first drive by wire suburban, I also know another person with a 2016 truck with the same issue but when shifted to low range it will pull itself out of the situation because it doesn't need the RPMs to move in low range, once it's off of the steep incline it will take throttle again, and drives normal, I am ready to sell this suburban because it will not try to do what I bought it do do, this is also my 6th suburban over the years and by far my least favorite, the touch screen stereo has a mind of its own as well changes stations calls people randomly screen switches from page to page constantly
Mine has had a lot of problems and I have a lot of videos showing how to fix them. It’s really not good for where we should be with technology. My Silverado is a 2000 with 250,000 miles and still going strong yet I’m tearing the engine apart on mine now to replace lifters. Otherwise mine towed really well and I was happy with the performance.
You are spot on. Our 2016 has been a piece of $&@&. Would never buy again and would never recommend!!!!
Great info - haven’t had all the same issues but now I know what to look for. One thing I did do was to disable the multi-displacement system with a programmer. That said I had the torque shudder issue and changing the fluid to the correct mobil 1 fluid did not take care of it. I’m about to bring it back to my mechanic but I’m wondering if there are any specific gotchas with that process such as also swapping out the trans fluid filter or any shortcuts that the shop might have taken that might be the cause of this?
Some people have had to have the converter replaced from what I have seen.
You have to adjust the sound WHILE its speaking
I’m thinking on buying a 2015 Yukon xl slt, 125k miles one owner looks great but I’m worried about transmission or engine failing not sure on the reliability I understand used cars is a gamble but I wonder trough my research if the Yukon is most as bad as others for example, land rovers,, any wisdom you can pass on this, thank you
I would avoid it. Lifters are almost a guarantee. Happened to me since the video. Watch the first videos in this playlist and you’ll change your mind and get a Toyota sequoia 2008-2022

the rear glass window on my 2019 tahoe is stuck shut and not sure how to address - will not work with button or remote.
is there a replacement module available?
Any other issues since this video that you have had?
Is your transmission still going strong without symptoms? That is the only thing that makes me more nervous about the 8-speed
I’m not sure if I mentioned the front struts, but they were bad and hard to find a good replacement until I found the Arnott brand. @@dannyjohnsonsgarage probably better to just upgrade to the adjustable Bilstein ones. Relatively inexpensive upgrade and a better than factory option.
But I read now that you have magnaride. Not sure if they are a compatible swap.

Was wondering did you ever glue the defrost wire back to the back glass i have a 2015 Chevy Suburban LTZ and its getting close to winter would love to see the repair process...thank you..
I still need to, and it appears the best method is using conductive epoxy. Soldering does not work well with glass
Help!!
Backup Camera is not working on my 2015 Yukon Denali
I was watching this video hoping you had experienced some issues with your charging ports and had a fix for that. Mine are so slow, if my phone is already dead, it's not strong enough to charge my phone enough to turn it back on.. but that is one of many small random feature issues I have, so I'm wondering if my battery is to blame
I have a 2020
I purchased a 2015 escalade with the same 8 speed trans and I'm almost certain its going out on my car at only 50k miles. Car goes into neutral and kicks into gear when taking off from a stop. When going down hill it clunks into gear when it decides to shift. When going up hill it seems like it can't decide what gear to be in. Sometimes when shiftingpark to drive it takes a second to engage and it kicks even though the car is at a stop. Very stressful and not sure what to do!
When I looked, the 8 speeds were harder to find rebuilt, so you might need to send yours in and wait for it to be rebuilt. Maybe they have more now. Or a salvage yard might send you a decent one with a warranty
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Sourcing a tranny is a big pursuit, but I don;t even know if that's what I need! What a stressful situation..
How can I get the adaptive cruise control off. I don't like it
Too many problems! A used Tahoe high country or Ltz 2015 are still $50k and with all these known issues that is still too many issues!! Maybe I’d consider one for $25k or $30k especially now since they are gas guzzlers!
I completely agree. I even had lifter failure after this video and got a Toyota sequoia once it was all over with Toyota Sequoia

Nice video man. We bought a 2016 with 200,000 km (Canada eh). One of our taillights is out. The doors screech like a mother. Any info on this. Still have to investigate. Most people say lube the crap out if it which sounds like a Band-Aid.
If it's the hinge, I would apply grease and not a spray grease like wd40 but an actual thick grease.
Where can I get parts listing & diagrams for 2019 Tahoe?
How was the 2014 model year in terms of reliability?
Same lifter problems if it has displacement on demand, but I don’t think it had as much technology problems. ua-cam.com/video/cWayyZGNYRI/v-deo.htmlsi=95lbZw7ytypgK65v
If you had to do it again, would you make the same choice in getting it?
I would not buy it. I also had the lifter failure mentioned in the video. It’s just too much for a newer car to have all the problems. Yukon / Tahoe / Suburban / Escalade Owner’s manual Bells & whistles

I’ve moved on to Toyota. But even with that, the newest v6 twin turbo with hybrid is too much of a risk for me on complexity. I trust Toyota over others, but I ultimately went with the last V8 and a chance to get one almost new Toyota Sequoia spare tire change lower and replace flat tire

How do you access fuse 50 in the right instrument panel fuse box?
Hi! I was looking for the ac condenser information and installing a bracket to prevent the issue, or is your replacement still hanging as originally designed?
I found a picture of it and will try to get a video up for it (and look for the bracket to install too).
You just need to program the sensors I am pretty sure they are all 315mhz
The new sensors are not compatible with the 2015 Yukon ua-cam.com/video/x8IdysYKWpc/v-deo.html
Tahoe vs 4Runner? Would you buy one instead of the other? Why?
I would go with the Toyota. This is about a sequoia, but same reasons: Why I traded my GMC Yukon for a Toyota Sequoia

@@dannyjohnsonsgarage man that is a very good video on a long term experience with the Yukon. Thank you for the reply and the video 🙌
Can you change the program to keept it on 8 cilinders at all times ?
You can with a handheld tuner, otherwise putting it in 6th gear manually will do that.
i have a problem with my yukon my touchscreen stopped working a month ago and i get no sound from my speakers

What about a 2019 Yukon sle

I have a 15 GMC Yukon XL Denali, 142,000 miles. It's been nothing but problems! Both front strutts stuck, so I had to have them replaced. My taillight works when it wants to, and not to mention that it's currently in the shop for a lifter.. Hopefully, that's all that is wrong with it. GMC did a horrible job with this model.. It has cost me a sh*t ton of money. I will NEVER buy another Chevrolet/GMC!!!!
I share your frustration, growing up with suburbans that were always so reliable. I’ve made a lot of videos on how to fix the majority of these issues, but it’s been frustrating for sure
I do have a question. Has the sound from the navigation disappeared completely?? And if it has happened to you how do you get it back?
Mine was low. There is one way to adjust it, hope it works for you ua-cam.com/video/2FrN3iKH7nw/v-deo.html

I have a 2015 Yukon XL having similar issues. What ive done is disconnect the battery for 1-10 minutes then reconnect and it starts. Im having problems figuring out why it does this.
