2015 GMC Yukon & Yukon XL SLE: Not for everyone...perfect for some! (Real world review)

  • A had the rare opportunity to drive and review both the standard Yukon as well as the Yukon XL for several days. Long overdue for a refresh, the new Yukons mark another step forward for GM in their quest for large SUV dominance. The Yukon XL in particular is virtually unmatched by any other automaker when it comes to downright size and capability. The question is, just how good are these twins?
    As always, this is an unscripted, amateur test drive and review from the point of view of a consumer. I'll cover everything from style to ride to space, with a strong emphasis on practicality and everyday use.
    Thanks for finding my channel. Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, SHARE and COMMENT. I look forward to hearing from you!

    We just rented this Yukon XL from Hertz. We drove it 2300 miles in a week. It was $600 for a week, unlimited mileage. Wife wants one now 😵😆. Truly a fantastic ride. Budget another $1000 in speeding tickets. 90 mph feels as smooth as 40 mph in whatever you drive now. We loved the extra room that the XL provided. That secret center console fits a Glock 43 perfectly. Also the center console on the sides (on both sides) is the perfect area for keeping a Glock 19 in a OWB (outside waist band) Bravo Concealment holster. It sits in there PERFECTLY. It was like it was built for it. And by the way, legal concealment. Long Live the Republic ! Now just to figure out Tow Packages and what engines etc. i think you mentioned towing capability, got to watch it again.
    We were actually astounded at the mileage. We drove from WI to NY and got between 20.3 to 26.5 mpg. Thats better than our 06 Honda Odyssey. Honestly I thought we would get like 16 mpg or less. And the engine was robust and had serious "giddyup". Another feature we LOVED were the rain sensing wipers. They worked perfectly.
    Also one thing you did not mention was fuel tank size. The Yukon XL has a 31.5 gallon tank. Once you fill up the tank there is a countdown mileage to empty. After I filled up the 2017 Yukon XL it showed 626 miles to empty. To me, that was a huge benefit for cross country driving. Our Honda Odyssey, we can get about 310 miles per tank. All this and driving like 75-85 mph. I cant imagine if we actually drove the speed limit. Lol. Yesterday we drove from Toledo, OH to Milwaukee, WI and the tank was at half. God, I just love that big tank. Obviously pulling a trailer would be different. If I was an executive having to drive long distances, buying this truck would be a great advantage. You arrive at your destination refreshed. I drove 8 hours per day and didn't feel beat up.
    Rent one and go on a trip ! Loved it. Thanks for the great review.
    Damn. Now we have to go find a slightly preowned one. Steep price for an amazing vehicle.

    GREAT! I had the opportunity to drive the Yukon XL, to Arlington Cemetery. Though I was there for my Father's interment I found that the XL had the room for people lots of head room, the XL turned a lot of heads. Great military ,FBI vehicle, LOVE the size and handling .Yukon is in a class by itself. Yah there's some minor things but you can work with it Love it in the DC Metropolitan area. I've never been a SUV guy as well, I've mostly have had cars in my lifetime but I'm considering a SUV. I'm researching right now especially after the car accident I had in October with my 2006 Lincoln Town Car. The XL does look great as the Cadillac Escalade ESV does.

  • @ashman0071
    @ashman0071 10 років тому +1

    Good review. I think people forget that, with exception to the Sequoia, the European and Japanese competitors start around $75K or more as a 'stripper' and go up from there. I owned a 2002 Suburban 1500 and it was unbeatable for people and cargo, but it didn't fit in my garage! I sold it to a good friend (something they say you should never do!) but he loves it and being White on the outside and Black on the inside, it's still cherry (it's been loved by both of us of course). Don't sell the 'non XL' too short (ha), it's cheaper by far enough money to get the Thule cargo box offered by GM for the more rare occasions you have enough adults and kids for a weekend or more getaway that involves luggage. Also, reliability is very good (no worse than our 2008 Odyssey) and although our Odyssey Minivan was pretty good with chains on the front wheels in a pinch, our 4x4 Tahoe with the appropriate tires means 'the CHP is waiving me through their checkpoint without me getting out'. Yep, independent rear suspension would mean better packaging for the 3rd row like the Expedition, but with the 6.2 running more frequently at 3.1 and the new 8 speed standard on the Denali this Christmas my Lexus LS is bye bye (Lexus replacement is $93K+ now!). Also my 5 and 8 year old boys already prefer the big, tall, bad boy ride so what's a Dad supposed to do! Comments about the Magnetic Ride Control on the Denali and the Escalade's 'sport comfort' settings would be nice, because, let's face it, we know these things aren't 'sporty' ; we buy them for Torque, ride quality, functionality and durability. And by the way, they are designed and manufactured in the U.S.A. No, I didn't vote for him, but if GM's going to use my tax dollars to put direct injection in their engines and develop 8 or more speed transmissions I"m going to give their products an audition. If anyone cares, the 4 'cars' that impressed me the most for families at the LA auto show were Acura's new MDX (looks like a bar of soap unfortunately), the Chevy Traverse/GMC Acadia and the new Suburban/Denali. For your teenage daughter(?), the Kia Soul of course! Hard to beat electric, sliding, rear doors however! Thanks again.

    I like your reviews better than any others I've seen. Really impressive (maybe you just always hit on the points I'm interested in? AKA real world applications). If I could make a request... would it be possible to have you review the 2015 GMC Canyon and 2015 Chevy Colorado when they are available? Thanks!

    • @gcavy1
      @gcavy1  10 років тому +1

      Robert Poster I hoping to do the Canyon as soon as it comes out! (and then again when the diesel arrives). Personally, today's full size trucks are so big and so expensive, I've got high hopes for a solid "compact/midsize" truck again.
      thanks for chiming in.
      -Greg

    • @verificacionnecessario9190
      @verificacionnecessario9190 10 років тому

      Gallup Journey Test Drives That's pretty much where I'm at too. If I can get decent quality out of the Canyon or Colorado (price to value being what it is for each) I would much rather go the midsize route. I could (I guess, probably could as exact pricing hasn't been announced) get a fully loaded Canyon for the price of low end Sierra. My problem is GM's reputation seems to be declining on the quality front, and the old Canyon/Colorado were certifiable garbage (IMHO). Since the Tacoma and Frontier haven't been truly updated since like 10 years ago, they haven't done enough to earn my business either. Here's to hoping!

    On the higher trim Yukons there are buttons in the rear that auto-fold the 3rd row seats and auto-release the 2nd row seats just to adress your suggestion that they put a lever for the 3rd row seats. Also the only thing about the bucket seats is that they are only available on the SLE which means you HAVE to have cloth seats. In a 50k car I expect leather seats to be a given
    Also, I love your reviews simply because they are unscripted, the scripted reviews that many do just seems to be fake to me and that it isn't their real opinion on the car

      Higher. It's not only them it's everyone. Ppl want all the luxuries now. Heated everything, leather everything, touch screen etc. Those things cost. It's not like the older days when the only luxury you could get was premium wheels & heated seats. Their really just being competitive. The Explorer, Navigator, Durango etc are all around the same price range. Then again you get what you pay for.

    I sat in the new Suburban LTZ with a sunroof and my head was touching the headliner. I was also disappointed with the usable interior space, especially the third row. For a such large vehicle, you would think the interior space is ginormous.
    I'm leaning more and more towards the new Toyota Sienna Limited with AWD. Definitely more space and about 25k cheaper.

    I got one in July 2015, its a nice big truck but I am facing a serious problem. the Air system sucks every smell from the out side even if you push the internal circulation button, it will do nothing, I sent three times to the dealership, they said we did all what we can do but couldn't fix it, I called GMC customer service, they have the worst customer service ever and they dont want to reply to my emails.
    Its really annoying because when you have a diesel truck in front of that will be a nightmare.
    If anybody has a solution please let me know because i really want to get rid of it because of this matter.

      get a private mechanic to check it, most dealers have no clue on things like this. it could be a HVAC failure and it should pop up a code if plugged into a computer. GM support is a bit shitty, and I wouldn't rely on them.

    The thing that really bothers me with these is the fact GM still hasn't put headrests for any of the middle seating positions. We've known for years the safety difference they make in the event of a rear end collision, so why does a 48K+ (base Tahoe price) SUV not have them? Same with the fact the middle seat in front with the bench has a lap belt only... To me for safety I'd only use these in any configuration as 6 passenger models. The Sequoia despite the fact it's ancient has a head rest in every seating position. I'm really hoping they change that for the 2021 MY redesign.

    This is pretty much the same as the Chevy Suburban, other than badging and the front grille appearance (but the Chevy looks better in my opinion). The interior is slightly more upscale than the Chevy, but not quite Escalade level, either. No matter which one you chose, you are making a wise choice. =)

    The 3rd row was a deal breaker for me. I really feel the Sequoia is very dated, even after their refresh, but the 3rd row has more room than the second row in the Yukon. The middle row also slides forward and backward allowing more adjustment. This all comes at the expense of trunk space but the kids aren't fighting so..... Its a shame because the Yukon is a beautiful vehicle with great modern features that the Sequoia lacks but they really missed the boat with the 3rd row.

    for $50,000 I would get a land Rover LR4. Can carry 7 ppl, is better off road, and offers a more luxurious ride. True, Land Rovers have more issues but not nearly as many as they used to. I'd we're talking about the higher trim Yukons costing 80k+ I would rather get a used Range Rover. I just don't get why GMC is charging luxury level prices for something that's not a luxury vehicle. It also could be a bit better off road as well.

    Greg,
    Just purchased a 2015 GMC Yukon XL SLE. has leather and 4x4. I must say I'm VERY unhappy with the cabin noise and vibrations. The most concerning being the buffeting, like vibration that can be felt inside the cabin. According to many of those affected, the sensation gets worse when the vehicle switches into V4 mode. Look into any GM forums, and you'll find them flooded with the same complains. Thoughts?? Experiences?? I know car sales and profits are the bottom line, but how can this issue continue to be ignored.

      that's a common defect apparently in 2015 GM trucks. I heard GM knows what's up but they're just denying stuff. dealers don't know what's wrong, take it to a private professional mechanic, they're the best at diagnosing problems like these. V8 to V4 should be smooth and you shouldn't even be able to tell the difference noise and feel

    Test drove it. We are getting the Lincoln Navigator after driving the Yukons and Tahoes. Visually I thought the Yukon and Tahoe was nice inside and out. Rear seat is not good for bigger kids or adults in the Yukon or Tahoe where the Navigator definitely does. The floor height is cramped with the solid rear axle underneath in the Yukon and Tahoe, where in the Navigator your feet are not cramped because the Navigator has rear independent suspension. The Yukon and Tahoe doesn't have independent rear suspension so when you drive you notice that the vehicle doesn't have as good of a ride as the Navigator. Steering the Yukon and Tahoe took way more work but I did like the thick steering wheel where the Navigator steered effortlessly. Gas pedal on the Small V8 is so restricted to try and get good gas mileage. The 6.2 was well powered and didn't have the same lethargic gas pedal but on the Lincoln Navigator the throttle response was not just amazing but powerful across a larger power-band. I don't think the 6.2 would win zero to 60 nor do I think the 6.2 could out pull a full trailer as well.

    I drove a 2006 Yukon XL, then we got a 2011 Escalade ESV. These are big beasts, yes....not good for families in my opinion. 3rd row, middle seat is useless when you have outboard passengers, also no headrest in middle seat (not good if in crash...internal decapitation). 2nd row bench...same issue as 3rd row, flipping seats to get in 3rd row sucks!!!! the middle row captains chairs do help with access. Now, to flip that 3rd row...climb into the cargo area to flip....a total pain in the rear. Its high and can be difficult to lift kids into child seats. "cheaper " vehicles are much better set up for families...still working on hubby to get one, LOL. My kids are 19, 17, 8 and 6.5.... These do drive nicely and do feel roomy, but GM really needs to get on the ball and catch up safety wise( appropriate headrests). The 3rd row flip flat is improved and the cargo area has improved in the newer models at least.
