  • Back in 2015, Alex Roy and Zach Bowman attempted the three-wheeled L.A. to NYC record in a machine best known for falling to pieces, the Morgan 3 Wheeler (aka the greatest vehicle ever made). Here's what happened.

People do things like this all the time on motorcycles, solo, completely exposed to the elements. For fun. Without acting like they just performed a miracle. With that said, this looks like a fun trip!

I've once crossed the US in a 79 Trans Am some years ago and it was surprisingly reliable. Drove real fast when the cops were away. It never broke down other than a few cosmetic blemishes I got on the road. And I made it. Now I'm cheering on his Moggy!

The Morgan 3-wheeler was one of many 3-wheelers popular in the UK because they were far cheaper to run than a proper car at a time when many people could not afford a car, and had only a motorcycle licence. They paid a lower road tax, cost less to buy, and did more mpg. Most were tiny saloons with tiny engines and top speed of 50 mph or less. The Morgan offered a more sporty experience with its sports car handling and powerful engine, to people who liked to be different. It was never intended for, nor suitable for, long distance cruising. You guys are brave indeed to make such a journey in the least suitable car in the world.

Vintage car? No GPS? Open wheel? The Morgan they drove is not vintage, it's new. I spotted a GPS in the cockpit. It has cycle fenders up front and an enclosed wheel in the back. Goofy, eccentric but not what Alex claims it to be. I've done a similar but slower trip (50 HP) twice from Montreal Canada to Los Angeles in an unrestored 1950 Chevy 2-door post with no chase van, no working gauges and no sense. It was fantastic. (I'm also an automotive journalist for the past 20 years)

This guy sees a challenge in driving this across the country? I know dozens of people who have and many still do cross the country on motorcycles and don't consider themselves daredevils doing it. many of them still ride their 80's BMW pushrod twins. No GPS or electronic guidance, in fact a couple of them still carry film cameras and flip phones, not even smart phones. As for these new morgans, they're not the old ones of the 30's. These people are ridiculous, let them try driving an early 80's peugeot diesel wagon across the country that will definitely not keep up with interstate traffic so has to be used on side roads and with no air conditioning like one friend does!

'A machine best known for falling to pieces'. As per the description, what a dick statement. Anyone that knows true automotive history will know that this car harks back to a classic era of motoring and that it is still 100% handmade by craftsman. This iconic vehicle is out of reach to almost every but a handful of people, with a waiting list of about 5 years last I heard. Definitely an enthusiasts car, unlikely to be revered by anyone who thinks that a car must have a 7L V8 and do less than 20mpg.

THE DRIVE not good enough. As a statement, 'Morgan is best known for falling to pieces' is complete bullshit. As we can clearly see, it barely made it to the end if it hadn't been for the following crew stopping in the road to collect abandoned car parts!!!!! It(the statement made) suggests that it is poorly built to such an extent that out of every reason that people might remember this manufacturer, the most common hing they say is that it falls to pieces. Interesting that in this and another video on the same car, whilst some design flaws are covered and some idiosyncrasies commented on, no mention is made of any parts falling off, or falling to pieces.

  • @mikeh8416

Did it in the late '70's in a 1968 Austin America with a broken transmission linkage box that dropped the shifter linkage parts on the ground every 50 miles or so. Also had a dented boot (trunk) that let the rain flood out the electric fuel pump, which had to be taken out, dried, and put back in, a dead speedometer, and a rag for a gas cap. ALL done on state highways, NOT Interstates, on road's I'd never been on. I was alone, 19, and this was my first "what you could call" a car. Got one ticket for speeding because I had NO CLUE what speed I was going, and a fix-it ticket for the rag in the tank.
That was called _"TRAVELING"_ back in the day, *not setting a record* ...

You get used to driving a Morgan, but it's true they come as a bit of a shock to somebody only used to modern cars (or the plusher older cars). That's why you see so many for sale with minimal mileage: people think they look good, but are horrified by no power steering, no traction control, no ABS, a chassis that's designed to flex, and ultra-hard suspension. Having driven both 3- and 4-wheeler Mogs (and owned a 4/4 for 14 years), I'd say yes, the 3-wheeler is more of a raw experience than the 4-wheeler; and yes, in the rain you do get very wet; and yes, in the wet you do need to be careful not to spin the wheel in 4th gear. But at the end of the day, it's down to your idea of fun. My idea of fun is 165k miles in my 4/4, so I reckon I could learn to live with a 3-wheeler, too. Just as long as I didn't want to take any luggage with me ...

Godmason That’s not truly Trans-continental. ( Even the term is flawed, as it was coined before Alaska became a state in ‘59). If He wants to do something truly awe inspiring, he needs to do it as I suggested in my main comment.

4 days ? Patsy Gallant done it back in 77 in under 5 minutes and was far more entertaining .

Dude, you guys are missing the point. It's not going across the country that is the challenge. It's the vehicle he's doing it with. Morgan 3 Wheelers aren't very reliable, and tend to have almost too much problems. The odd chance of you breaking down is higher in this vehicle than in any other new car you can buy. Then there are the brake failures, and a lot of other complications that nobody wants to deal with. Or in other worlds, cross country with basically an almost unrestored classic.

It could have been a stupid idea, uncomfortable, stressful, dangerous but despite all that this is the juice of life. Alex has always this way of make me smile.
This guy could be a fool sometimes (in a good way) though we all have to admit that also has a big pair of cojones.
    Long life for Mr. Roy!

Where did you get the tickets? Looks to be a State Trooper.
As long as one is generally pleasant (or as pleasant as one can be for getting pulled over), cooperative, have paper work in order, etc... Some State Troopers are cooperative enough to let one go completely, or reduce everything to a non moving summary violation.

I have a Miata 2014 phase 3, I drove it across South Dakota at 80 mph it took me 4 and one half hours. Just West of the Missouri river is the Missouri breaks a series of hills that go up and down 500 feet. At 80 mph in a Miata it's like a roller coaster on steroids. I also drive it top down thru the winter in Minnesota at 25 F. Just endless fun.

Epic trip but you should have a director cut version of this at least 45 minutes!

Nice Morgan, but how is it more dangerous than a motorcycle? I've driven the perimeter of the lower 48 on a Kawasaki KZ750 and that Morgan looks really comfortable to me.

I rode from Columbus, OH to Nashville, TN and back on an '06 V-Star 1100 classic and that was uncomfortable enough for me to not want to do it again.

My brother did a similar trip in Australia on his Honda 90 step through scooter. Without any support vehicle and carrying his own requisites. He didn't get a single ticket for speeding across the Nullabor plain.
