Here is my take on the car review. In this video, I inspect a high mileage and modified 1987 190e 2.3-16. I found some issues, we fixed some issues and then I review and drive the car. It's like a full-service car review! Enjoy!

AMG never did a diesel as far as I know, so: my 1985 300D.
This 190e, or the 05 06 CDI like you used to have.

I would’ve cried too, if I’d had to get rid of a 190E that clean.
Did the new owner cry when he cracked the windscreen?
I remember when james may drove one on top gear and kept putting it in reverse instead of first. I chuckled each time
He did it on purpose.
I remember that episode like yesterday! Never your id own one
It's easy done
@@youngtimersgarage congratulations! People getting their dream cars makes me legitimately happy.
I just rewatched that film
Proud owner of a 16V myself. I'm glad it works and still runs.
That body style is design perfection.
I used to work with a guy who was a Mercedes mechanic, they sent him to Germany, and to Bosch to learn everything about those fuel systems. We worked for a salvage car rebuilding company. They must have bought and sold 30 older clean title Mercedes that ran like shit and people wanted to trade in for something on the lot. Would take him legit 10 minutes to get them running like a top. I'll see if I can get in touch with him and see if there are any resources available that explain the system, he said it's INSANE easy, and tunable to supply as much fuel as anyone could ever need.
Wow! Keep us updated! Sounds like an awesome beginning of another spinoff
Im an ex Saab Master Tech and did all my training on early 900 8v turbos with K Jetronic. Such an easy system to maintain.
The theory of K-Jetronic was fairly "simple", but by the 80s all the smog requirements meant that there were a bunch of electro-mechanical components added to the mix. Even with the earlier cars there are a lot of delicate moving parts that get gummed up over time - it's like a feedback carburetor with fuel injectors hanging off the side. You also need tools that weren't common in the US then (and probably still aren't) like a 10-bar fuel pressure gauge with some odd sized fittings.
Lots of the Volvo service manuals used to be available online (on the k-jet site), looks like they're gone now. Some of the Mercedes stuff is still available on that workshop-manuals site but it's been poorly digitized.
Check your email, Alex.
My mentor is like that, we save old merc's givin them what we call the Joey Tune-Up.
Any cars available. Like this. Could you let me know ?
The Recaro decal on the front seats are the real deal. Original from the factory..
True. It was there from the factory
Wrong....
Correct. I have the same seat in cloth and it has the same badge.
When I have it doesn't have it!!and I buy it with 10k
@@scaniav8530able Indeed. The 16V never used badged seats.
Alex, love the collab with YTG lately. His knowledge of MB is very impressive, and he comes across as likable and easy to root for. His passion is contagious. Same goes for you and your channel of course.
Thanks got tuning in TJ we really appreciate it !
My second car in 1997 was a 1984 190E 2.0 4 speed with the same color as the one in the video, I had it for 8 years, like Alex says the sonroof was the only luxury option on it, but it was so comfortable to drive in compared to the newer cars my friends drove round in, this video brought many memories back :)
I got the Carly ad of Alex and Sam before the video started and I’m like “Hey, I recognize those guys”
Shut up
@@hondaveetc82 🤣🤣
Bit off-topic. Alex told us on the episode with Sam, that he bought a new BLUE daily and some of us might not like it or something.
I see a Porsche that looks to be blue there at around 2:40
Like watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid. Not Mercedes enthusiast but a classic is a classic. Have to respect the rare ones all day.
So No one Is Gonna Talk About That Nice Dark Blue Porsche In The Detail Bay?👀👀👀👀
My bro had a 2.3-16v way back in the 90's, up here in Canada. I hated working on it, and it wasn't fast either. Now nostalgia kicks in and these have become desirable.
A Silver 190E was my mom's well earned first car after taking night school to get her realtor's license. Only a few years earlier she was featured in the Washington Post as the moped lady in our home town. That's a pretty good leap I think. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.
Feeling super nostalgic. My very first car in high school “2002” was a two tone 190e 2.3-16 with Brabus wheels. The car only had 70,000 miles on the clock when a girl hit me head on after two years of ownership. Such an awesome and unique car!
One of my first cars was a 190E 2.6, it handled very well for the era. Definitely an underrated chassis.
Engine swap 2jz
chassis? the 190e w201 doesn't share the chassis with any other car. what's the point calling it a chassis?
I’ve just bought a 1987 manual 2.6, best car i think i’ve ever owned thus far
@@paveantelic7876 wtf are you talking about?
chas·sis
/ˈCHasē,ˈSHasē/
noun
the base frame of a motor vehicle or other wheeled conveyance
@@JustinSeara why would you be complementing a chassis instead of suspension if it's the only car on its chassis?
This was my dream car when i was a kid.
It was known in UK as a Mercedes Cosworth.
I ended up with a Ford Scorpio Cosworth (3.0 litre 24 valve) which was a license loser and badly built with terminal electrical issues.
Nice find!
17:08 thats KE jetronic opposed to the KA jetronic of the 126 you guys did. So it has lambda control on the fuel distrubutor. Also adjusting the valves on these is a big pain. But would be cool to show
The lines on these are incredible! I've always wanted one.
One of the best looking Mercedes ever made, so timeless! I hope to have the opportunity to drive one some day.
My first MB was a 190E, always admired the lines of the 190 and 300 E but the 190E 2.3-16 was just sexy.
This is the type of car used in a series with mostly F1 drivers in the mid 80s. Ayerton Senna was still just an underapreciated up and coming driver but when he beat the pants off the worlds best drivers he suddently go the attention he deserved and made history from there.
I had a german spec 190 a long time ago with roll up windows and cloth seats. I loved that car and I still remember that old german smell!!
Hey your oil leak is from the timing chain tensioner. They seep all the time. Pull the alternator to replace the two washers. It's a weird fix if you care about little leaks
Hey thanks for the info ill def have that addressed
I've always loved these and the fact it has a Martin Brundle approved chassis's makes it even better.
Edit since some people are taking this seriously. It was a joke in reference to James May.
It wasn’t that good, it’s no M3, I’ve had both.
Martin Brundle was as much an engineer as i am a Lap dancer.
It was stated on Top Gear UK that Brundle played no part in the development of this car and the car was blown outta the water by BMW.
@@martincassels7995 m3 got beaten by it so, it is :)
Ok James May haha
@@slevente00 then BMW did the M3 Evo and Evo II in which case it gapped the 190 on the Ring by a good margin.
Loving all the classic mercedes content! MORE w126, w124,and w201 stuff please!
I had one MB w201 2.3 evo when I lived in Boblingen/ Sindelfingen. Mine was Black and had air condition, power windows and seats. Also my MB 2.5 ltr evo had air. Both manual trans. I worked for Mpower BMW back then in the DTM series 90-92 sessions and would see these Evo’s racing under the AMG banner, with Mr. Albrecht as team chef. I remember that AMG had strait cut gears in their trans and they would make this whining noise at
Low speeds. This video really brought back memories. Thank you!
2.3 Evo doesn't exist, only 2.5 had evo versions.
Sorry to disagree 2.3 16 valve was evo one, 2.5 16 valve was evo two. That the way MB techs at the MB tech center in Sindelfingen Germany would id them.
Never has been a 2.3 litre Evolution model, since both the Evolution 1 and 2 was 2.5 litre engine....
@@scaniav8530able and evo2 had this radiculous body kit ? Evo 1 had 2.5 16V and 2.3 body didint it?
Yes i always thought these cars were awesome and i'm happy that alex is fixing one
Keep up the good stuff
Growing up my dad had a 5 speed 91 190E. I paid homage by getting a 6speed 2008 c300, which is essentially what the 190E turned to
This car is gorgeous and I can still see its beauty many years later. This car is just SO clean considering the age. Mint condition. I would love to add this to my collection sometime in the future
A 190D 2.5 that a dad of a friend owned first introduced me to Mercedes back in the day and I have been in love with these kinds of cars ever since. I have owned a 1993 E-Class coupé since 2008 and I cherish it and the memories I have bene able to make with it to this day.
Once you get to know these cars, how solid they are, what an amazing feeling they give when being in them and driving them, it's very hard to drive anything else.
I owned 2 of them, one black one silver (gold to my eyes). Suspension was a joy to ride, 5 speed dog lag, remind me a lot of good old time. I did sold the last 16V five years ago. The only complain is the air conditioner and idling problem. All the fuel related components had been replaced except the air/fuel sensor under the exhaust. Good to see such a lovely car in your video.
Am I the only one who thinks that front stainless steel brake hose looked like it was rubbing on the tire? Might want to look at getting that tied up out of the way, Alex!
Definitely rubbing 👍
I’m so glad the 190e 16-V finally getting the attention it deserves. I had two. Both ‘86 US spec in the dark gray. First was a beater. Second was a gorgeous minter. Utter lack of garage space forced sale. Yes, I miss it ten years on.
Ive owned my 16v for a bit over 2 years. I love every minute when I drive it.
My dad owned one since 1997. Now in my hands for good 10 years. Daily driven too! I subscribe to this channel because clearly this guy love the germans. Especially Mercedes.
Its absolutely true you "can" fall in luv with cars.
I really feel for the guy that could no longer drive the Cosworth how, heart wrenching, gut wrenching
But just look at the condition he kept it in, what a credit to him
The fuck.. that car looks better than 99% of new cars. Timeless
Even Mika Häkkinen has one in rally spec. Such a cool car. Good to be back. Awesome Video Alex
That 190... So pretty. Those wheels, classics.
James may putting this car into reverse constantly when he is trying to put it in first will forever be one of my favorite top gear moments
Obviously he did it on purpose since you have to pull the stick to put it in reverse.
That MB looks so clean. Love it!
So happy you did a video on this car!
Love these!!! I had a 190e 2.6, and I regret selling it almost daily. Thanks for sharing!
All the Tony Lapine manual 924/944/928 had the dog leg shift pattern. Big fan, keep up the good work!
Quickly becoming my favorite cartube channel. Good job, Alex!
Thanks Jack!
Alex, thank you for another interesting educational video.
I look forward every week to see what you post.
Thanks again, from Hoboken New Jersey.l
A coworker had one of these and let me drive it once...it was a lot of fun and I've always been on the lookout to get one since. Just haven't happened across the right one yet.
I've been looking at buying one of these! Thanks for the video!
That was a MAC RBRT bit, its nice but it’s only $17 to replace, that tech probably already has a new one by now.
The only MAC tool I have was acquired the same way: through the Underhood Technician’s Tool Exchange Program.
A have a Honda ratcheting wrench that was left in my brand new car only having been at the dealer for PDi so I assume it’s from assembly.
That’s how I ended up getting a mac or Matco 3/8 and 1/4 inch combination ratchet
Very cool car - I look forward to all your videos. Please keep sharing your knowledge and troubleshooting tips with your followers.
Hey MacGyver! I’m loving your legend series of long lost icons. These are the European Mercedes I grew up with as a kid that had me wide-eyed and completely impressed.
BTW your Editing it’s about as strategic as your great partnerships. I’m looking forward to the completion of the V 12
A gray 190E presented Ayrton Senna to the rest of the world when he as just starting racing internationally and in a event sponsored by Mercedes and the FIA.
Dude who just had made one test in F1 at the time raced in one of these against legends like Alain Prost,Jaqque Lafitte and the great Nikki Lauda and ended first place.
The rest is history, but the legend started in one of these.
Just wanted to post this. Can't get anything better than a Senna-approved car.

Real good collaboration. You have a good radio voice.
Love the seat belt warning illumination and position from that era
What a beautiful car. For my money you are a great real world mechanic too.
You're the only guy I watch the ads for!!
I remember when I was a teen i worked at a garage for a short time....I had one of those just like that come in with same color schemes and interior and all, best part was it was a manual. ....I was told the brakes were acting up so my boss said take it on the fwy and do a 5 mi test ride....I never found anything wrong with the brakes....but man that stick shift was fun, and that car was extremely quick.....I'd love to get my hands on one today.....25 yrs later......I would give my cls550 for one
I can help you find one from europe but it will cost you 100 grand?
Boy! As much as I love the classic Mercedes videos, you better be double uploading today! Haha cause you promised a V12 video Saturday on Instagram
Those 190's 2.3-16 was crazy expensive here in Norway when they come out back in the 80's
Yeah, like everything else is dirt cheap here in Fennoscandia :D
The gearbox is the same as the e30 m3 , it’s a getrag !! Good weekend, Greetz from the Netherlands , ramon
This was a big deal in the mid 80's when most cars did 60 mph in 10+ seconds and felt like you were driving a sofa.
My 1984 GTI can barely get out of its own way these days, but I was able to take out F bodies and Mustangs at the stop light when it was new.
it probably still CAN, and you've just gotten used to it being tired, check the ignition system, the distributor and the cap, as those old cars can sometimes run with a broken roater in the distributor, as alot of times the loss of power from a failing system is gradual so you never pick up on it till you get in one that's sorted.
@@kavinskysmith4094 It will still run against those cars, but now base Kia hatchbacks are as quick.
A friends brother today asked if my 944 was fast. My answer was no. It only has 164hp. In it's day though it was. My wife's van makes over 100 more hp and torque.
@@pkt1213 I bet your wife’s van Is probably a whole lot heavier than the 944 though?
It is. Still list 0-60 is a few tenths faster and 1/4 almost a whole second for the van. Not saying I don't love the 944, just it isn't a fast car anymore with 163hp. In 1989 Corvettes, F bodys etc were still in a hp slump and weighed way too much.
I love how simplistic older cars are.
I had a 190E W201 2.6lt and that was a pretty quick car and in mint condition! Great Great car!
Loved these in the 80's, still looks pretty sharp! 😊👍
Your video's are so calming that I keep falling asleep and have to watch them again later. Best tactic for more views I guess 😁 keep up the good work 👍
Bro, I love that! I just picked up a family owned 2001 E430 with 147000 miles that is cleaner and drives better than my E55! It’s painfully original and was dealer maintained at auto Stiegler Encino most of its life and even still had a genuine Mercedes air filter and an unopened factory first-aid kit when I got it. It has the usual minor issues and needs a window regulator and a door lock bellows but everything else including the sunshade all work. The car runs very well after doing an oil flush and Liqui-Moly oil and Ceratec additive and a tank of 93 octane and fuel system cleaner it just keeps getting better the more I drive it. The E55 got jealous and decided to blow an AirMatic strut getting gas the other night and it was nice to have another car to drive while I was waiting for my BC racing coil conversion to come in form FCP Euro. The E55 is back on the road and I have to do brakes and the window regulator along with the lock bellows on the 430 this weekend and I will leave the door panels off for my dent guy to get out a few dings but that’s about all it needs. It’s 040 black with anthracite to match the E55 and the interior is more or less perfect with the factory floor mats and odd alligator clips that poke through the carpet to keep the mats in place. I just love that ‘old car smell’ it has and it has a certain quality about it that you just feel special driving it and after 25+ hours of paint correction and headlight restoration, it came out beautiful and gets looks everywhere I go in it. It gets more attention than the E55 and thanks to you, I now own 2 soon to be classic Mercedes that I would have never considered had I not stumbled across your channel 2 years ago. Thanks for all the great content, Alex and I look forward to your next project!
I absolutley love thia car. Looks amazing and I remember certain people rolling around the neighborhood with it.....
Its about time you did a video in your new garage
Loving these classic Benz videos
i love the boxy designs of the older mb.
awesome maintenance work Alex.
14:34 my neighbors Toyota truck had calipers just like that where you pop the pads right out the side of them. 22:55 your neighbor there has a cool looking Subaru, used to love the look of the two door 2.5 RS when they were new
i got a 190E from 1987 but with a 2.4L engine manual and has really really rare rims
My Favourite Car!
I do own one, 1992 2.0 4 gear manual, currently at 285.667 km.
Recently,i did replace my brakes and was so easy.
Fuel system on those it's a nightmare (KE-Jetronic mechanical injection)
In Nardo 1983 this 2.3-16 car drove 50000km at 250km/h. Awesome record! About 31000 miles at 155 mph
We’re so bombarded with the mega-HP numbers today that we forget about these cars and the driving enjoyment they bring. I just bought a 2006 SLK 350, 6-speed. It’s a dream to drive and, best of all, my wife loves the car.
That dampener at 11:14 usually goes unnoticed since it only dampens the leftover vibration to the steering wheel slightly and smoothens the feel of steering.
I remember replacing my steering dampener because it was so easy to do. The old one was shot, but I felt no difference whatsoever with a new one.
It's a good idea to bleed the clutch too. It uses brake fluid from the same reservoir as the brakes. It's a commonly forgotten part of the service.
As long as I'm aware not only 190E 2.3 16v had that kind of transmission. I remember when I drove in W124 taxi with my mom when I was little and this car had that kind of trans in it. It was a diesel if I recall correctly. I remember how weird it was for me that the first gear was in the place of second (yes, I was a really big car kid and I knew a lot of stuff already when I was only 4-5 years old :P) It's still weird for me to this day but thanks to you Alex I finally know why they did it, thanks! :D
I wish mine was that clean 😍
I only changed the resonator for one from a c230, it sounds great, no rasp at all.
Oh my that 190 is beautiful looking. Love it.
Very very nice... Loved the fact that the gear marks on the speedo match the red line on the tacho
The speedo was for cars without rpm meter. It just carried over to this models.
They are cool... the Mercedes 190E 2,3-16 was made for one reason only, to be homologated for Group A in rally and racing. According to the regulations, Mercedes needed to build 5,000 cars. Another car that was made for the same reason i BMW M3 E30. The Mercedes 190E 2,5 Evo II is another one. Those are really cool👍
Bill from Curious Cars is sure gonna be jealous you got to review this one!
I tell you when I sold my Duratec powered 01 Sable Wagon I had a moment too. I loved that car owned it for 7.5 years and had so many family memories including taking my 3rd daughter home from the hospital after a health scare that led to a longer hospital stay. It was really sad to see it go but I needed something bigger for the family. If you are a car person, you form emotional bonds with cars you like. I can't say I would have that with the Odyssey I own now........
This is such a cool car! Well built, quick, good handling, unique looking, and its doors sound like a bank vault when you close them.
What's not to like? 😊
If it is like a manual Mk 1 Ford Escort box you should be able to accelerate through the box with the throttle full open all the way. Just slam the clutch on off fast; but get your gear change timing right or you"ll bend a valve.
My Grandpa once owned one. Not with all this specs and with only 1.8 Litre, but he was always happy with it
1.Gear left down.....Epic.My 1988 VW T3 2.1 has it also.
Nice review….I had one of those years ago the only quirk was the dogleg trans in stop and go traffic…..PS I have relied on NORD for years and they are without a doubt the best thing going!
Never seen such excellent in depth mechanical expose' of these German classics
I remember seeing some GTC cars racing at Kyalami South Africa in the 80's/90's somewhere. The Benz 190 2.3-16 was there, but the E30 M3 was king!!!
Lol, I remember seeing the E23 745i racing at Kyalami, but that's showing my age!!
I had a 1986 2.3-16 back in the early 90’s. Loved that car!
One time, the guy behind me was flashing his high beams so I thought he wanted to see the car so I pulled over. Turned out I had been driving with a rear flat for a while but had no idea as the suspension “pumped” itself up… haha
If I could I would want to buy another of these, perhaps a 2.5-16…
Those rims with low tires is on point
Was not expecting that exhaust note
I love the Akebono pads!!! Buy once from FCP Euro and you only have to pay for them once. No brake dust and they last longer then OEM pads!!
Had a normal 190E here in the UK with the same spolier, but without that brake light, always wanted a 190E. It was in cream thou lol Manual Brilliant car! I really miss it. I put this stuff called Astal in it in 2001,it was off QVC channel,i chucked in the oil & fuel,it was an really good engine flush, you need to change the oil after 500 miles,BOY did it do a brilliant job! The timing chain looked new after, drove excellent too.
