    Started smoking a pipe in 1973. The first thing to tell a new pipe smoker is to BRAKE THE PIPE IN, which was never mentioned here. If you do not do this, i. e. build up a “cake” inside the bowl, you are going to experience a burnt taste to the tobacco.
    I always used a soft tobacco during my break-in period. In those days it was Rum & Maple brand that worked best for me. I filled the bowl about one-fifth full and gently drew on the pipe, tamping down the residue after it went out then relighting after it cooled.
    I would gradually add more tobacco as the break-in progressed. It’s a slow and deliberate process, but if broken-in correctly, a pipe can provide a lifetime of smoking pleasure.

    My grandfather was a pipe smoker. My extra wife, her grandfather was a pipe smoker. Both of them would just stick the pipe in their pouch, jam in the tobacco and go with it. I saw one of them set their pipe down, come back 5 minutes later and it was still going. I have no idea how they did it. I have tried but no netter who’s packing method I use, it never stays lit. But I still enjoy it and after being away from it for over 10 years, I am about to buy some new tobacco and start back up. It is not addicting at all. Not for me anyway.

    I started smoking a pipe a year ago and have learned the fine art of turning leaf into ash.
    But I use a torch lighter. I prefer it to matches. Once my pipe is lit it's hard to see if it's actually lit. Sipping smoke is the best way to savor the flavor of a good blend. Go too fast and the tobacco becomes harsh.

      Recently, I took my first dive into the world of premium cigars after having a memorable experience when a colleague treated me to first nice premium box cut stoge. As aging gentleman, I noticed the need for a deliberate shift as I force myself to wind down from the mental labor of the day. My cigar experience taught me the proper usage of the torch lighter and how to gradually toast the tobacco. It's akin to using a scalpel in how you control the direction of the heat. As a pipe newbie, I will definitely follow the tips presented above. However, I understand why some prefer a torch, especially if they are smoking outside.

      @@busyrand The argument of the butane torch vs butane soft flame is burning the tobacco vs lightning the tabacco, people either understand that distinction or they don't. The biggest thing about cigars and pipe smoking is doing something that is not really popular, kind of against the grain, old school. People who are attracted to that kind of hobby generally won't tell you how to do things, you can light however you want to, smoke however you want to, you don't even have to cut the cigar, if you want you can bite the tip off.

      I used a torch a few times on cheaper pipes, and only when the tobacco is in the middle or lower. I call it a shotgun. I got a 3-jet and I just blast a single pulse of torch straight down into it and puff. I don't hold it, just a single press and that lights it up. Torches are really dangerous considering that small timeframe lit up the entire thing. I've since switched to zippo where I cut out the sides with a rotary blade so it resembles the zippo pipe insert circle. Works like a charm.

      Please avoid Torch lighters; they tend to scorch and ruin the pipe rim/ bowl. Stick to softer flame butane lighter/ Zippo pipe lighters or good ol matches. Happy Piping!

    Love the looser/less loose/packed info you gave - easy to remember Question: I typically use a pipe to replace cigarettes in between things. So I actually prefer it to go out in between tasks. Any advice on how to keep it smokable with that in mind - it seems the bottom always gets very moist and doesn't ignite after about the 3rd or 4th light.

      From what I have seen watching these videos about starting out it sounds like when you are smoking your pipe you might be sipping or puffing to fast and possibly useing an aromatic tabbaco. All of the how to videos seem to be saying slow down puff about every 3 to 4 seconds not every 1 or 2 seconds...they also say that aromatic tabbaco is more prone to making the pipe wet in the bottom making that gargling sound. Thats also a sign you may be smoking to fast and that you may need to lay your tabbaco out on a tray or sheet of paper for 20 to 30 mins before you pack your bowel and allow it some time to dry a bit before smoking.

    How often should I puff exactly? I have had that exact problem of my pipe going out (just started)

    • @leonine9463
      @leonine9463 Рік тому +1

      In my opinion It's not a big problem if your pipe goes out. you just have to relight. In fact it's better to go out than you puff quickly and you overheat the pipe because in that case the flavor starts to go in a wrong direction and if the pipe gets so hot it might even get damaged. However there is no exact answer to how often you should puff, with experience you'll obtain your rhythm and find that sweet spot. Pipe smoking is fairly easy but it takes years to master. There are great UA-cam content that can help as well.

    After fifty years of smoking a pipe, I offer this advice: As a beginner, don’t try to break in a new briar pipe, find some used ones that are ready to smoke, or use a corn cob pipe. They are cheap, disposable and one of the best smokes available.

      An old time smoker with only a single pipe or two would probably smoke the same pipe all day long. Modern smokers are more into collecting and maintaining a pipe. Overuse can definitely harm a pipe, but if it’s good quality…no REAL worries. I normally smoke once or twice a day during the week and usually carry two pipes with me for that week. I always clean my pipe after each smoke and then a good clean at the end of the week before resting.
      I will frequently be toward the end of a great smoke where the tobacco is just hitting all the right spots and will happily top up my pipe and keep right on going.
      Another major concern from overuse is a combination of frequent use and poor cleaning. If your smoking a nasty heavy aromatic or you drool into your pipes and they stay wet for too long they will taste terribly sour.

    my pipe came with a layer of carbon inside of it, i used alcohol with paper towels after two weeks of using the pipe to clean it out. i believe the layer of carbon was washed away. do you think it is still safe to use it? or is there any way to add a new layer of carbon inside of the bowl?

    • @michaelc.6927
      @michaelc.6927 Рік тому +2

      Your pipe should be fine, just smoke it. In the future, never be concerned with cleaning the inside of the bowl that well, let it build up a bit. Pipes smoke there best with a cake built up in the bowl. You can clean out the bit with a pipe cleaner, and if you'd like you can even dip the pipe cleaner in your favorite vodka or whisky and let dry. Happy smoking!

    You should use a soft blue flame absolutely no yellow flames

    • @Mike1614b
      @Mike1614b 5 місяців тому

      the top 3 methods in the world to light a pipe all have yellow flames- the Bic (or similar butane), Zippo, and a wood or paper match.
      The match is technically the best for control, placement, and drawing the flame down into the tobacco, but they're a pain to use compared to a Bic-type lighter, esp in a breeze. The blue torch is more pure, far less CO, but it's hard to control a torch when lighting a pipe, isn't it?

    I am new to pipes I bought a MacQueen wizard churchwarden and Sutliff Molto Dolce tobacco. It was hard to keep lit and re lighting I puffed hard to draw the smoke and keep it going it went out it and was frustrating not relaxing. After I smoked a few puffs I had tongue bite sting and a horrible aftertaste. The tobacco unlit smells nice would be a good air freshener but smoking it was different. I do not see how people can enjoy smoking not from my experience maybe cigars would be a better choice less complicated and work to smoke to relax. I may just stick with a good coffee and tea and beer and brandy to relax those work well for me. I tried it I did not care for it may sell my tobacco and pipe what a waste of time and money on this experience.
