My 4.3 has almost 300,000 miles on it, still runs great, doesn't burn oil, and doesn't make noise. It's quite possible the most simple, basic, and reliable V6 available...
My 1988 S-10 had a 4.3 with TBI. Ran great and lasted almost 200k miles. I sold the truck to a friend who used it for a landscaping business. The TBI was easy to work on compared to the other intakes, but not the most powerful. The best bet for those who want power is a carburetor adapter. Holley made one and it isnt' expensive.
The goop is probably from running Pennzoil. Pennzoil includes wax/paraffin wax or at least it used to. It builds up over time from the engine getting hot then cooling again & getting hot & cooling again and again and again. I found the same goop & more in my double hump 350. It helps for a more smooth mechanical operation but builds up in the corners and where oil sits. That’s what I know to be true from my experiences anyway.
Grand parents had a corsica, the engine took a crap, the dealer teied claiming they never changed the oil, the oil used was changed on schedule but what it was is penzoil, I will never use that or quakerstate, heck I don't like mobil1 either.
Got my 4.3 with 236K. Did the very first of many oil changes in 04, and it now has over 350K. Hadn't driven it since 2021. Did an intake manifold gasket because of a mild skip and occasional misfire on the driver side. Found coolant in number 3, so I figured intake manifold gasket. I think I may have left a 10mm nut on top of the butterfly upon completion. Started up, and everything sounded good for three minutes. Then it started rattling. Shut it off. Started again and rattling again. Figured that's where that missing nut went. Fast forward three years, and I need to get back in it, so I'm pulling the heads for the first time. Hopefully, there will be no big damage, but I may video the rest and upload it.
These guys can't remove a 7mm stud and they expect me to lend credence to their advice and opinion on Chevy engines? The one dude that sounds like Marge Simpson's sisters is particularly intellectual...
Hey it reminded me of some mechanic shops I hung around in back in grade school. A typical mix of salty language and demonstrated ability. A great lesson in sifting the good stuff from the mix. Yeah I had to wonder at that stud removal. I don't think they were interested in rebuilding it. That or they were going to replace all the parts we saw removed. But I did see the bumper sticker plainly visible on the back of the truck topper. I decided to focus on the motor, not the motor mouth. Missed the Pelosi comment completely.
That engine has been apart before. Looks like a Dorman timing cover, which isn't bad. The plastic timing cover on these engines is supposed to be replaced every time it's disturbed. Another thing, these engines are externally balanced. The harmonic balancer is a neutral balance with a weight pressed into one of the holes in it. You need to tap that weight out of your old balancer and tap it into your new one. Be sure to tap it into the same hole on the new balancer. I put a little JB weld on mine so it won't come out someday. Its possible that the aftermarket balancers come with a new weight already installed. I have 2 brand new GM balancers, neither one has the weight installed and they didn't come with a new one.
Yeah I’m pretty sure he was being sarcastic when he said, “Harbor Freight was the best.” All they (Harbor Freight via China) sell is quality reject crap. Kinda like the way TJ Max, Ross & Sam’s Club are able to sell what they have super cheap. If you look at the product close enough you’ll see there is something wrong with it.

Here is a teachable moment...at 8:57 , removing a threaded stud with vice grips, If you flip the vise grips over they will ALWAYS bite better. You pull toward the moveable jaw, the opposite of what you did. Same story for pump and Channel lock pliers, all adjustable wrenches and of course, pipe wrenches. If you doubt me, you haven't tried it. Saves a lot of aggravation. Does anyone know of aluminum heads and intake for these engines?
You realize this is the same rule for all the handtools. Its angled to help with leverage. All wrenches, combination, adjustable, if you pick up a tool and its curved its directional. He also didnt tighten nearly hard enough. Lol vicegrips 101 clamp as hard as it lets you. Also never buy harbor frieght vice grips the teeth sheer right off
@@mattiakers20 Yes I do, I listed most of them. You see it a lot so I guess it's esoteric knowledge. Even "Vise Grip Garage" Has it wrong in his little opening. It does make a big difference. The guy used the very tip also which is not EVER going to bite as good on a hardened stud.

One think them engines are bad for is getting a tick from the rear exhaust manifold bolt breaking off. Happens on a lot of them and it sounds damn near just like a valve tick
So some idiot while changing the intake gasket left one of the rags he used to cover the holes from debris in the hole and put the intake back on. So finally found this out because we can see the rag in the cylinder when we took out the spark plug in cylinder one. And by idiot I am talking about myself. Please tell me you have a good idea at how to get that rag out.
Goop means too many miles without an oil chsnge, 2500 miles change oil & put in a quart of rislone b4 the change let it run for 5 minutes,750,000 miles on a 6.2 chevy diesel still going!
I know this is old but my 2002 Chevy s10 4.3 vortec a bolt dropped into number three so the header came out almost like butter the intake out but I got 6 bolts on the bottom and all the ones on top of the head but it’s stuck on there am I missing something
Look for buried bolts in the valve train area? And the corners at the bottom? If all are off and still a paint to remove head, crow bar works every time ! Also, use a shock hammer, lead or brass and smack it up!
Lmfao.. You two are something I did enjoy the banter . loved the placement of the TRUMP bumper sticker. Oh as far as the 4.3 One of the best engines chevy ever made

My 95 Cheyenne is a 4.3 with 296,xxx and it's still running like a champ!
I drove all last summer and winter with no water or antifreeze 😬 never overheated either
Mines losing oil pressure at 315k
My luck has been terrible with the bottom end.
I think the 3.8 3800 destroys the 4.3 in reliability.
My 2003 1500 is a gutless piece of shit.
4,3 one of the best built Engines almost #250.000 miles on my 1997 astro van!!! Thanks for Sharing!!!!

7mm socket would of taken the studs out before you rounded them off

Would love to see more heads and bigger cams for these motors

Instead of vice grips you could used a socket

Mother love bone in the background 🎸
If it ain't broke don't fix it fellas
If you look really close, you'll see that Briggs & Stratton manufactured the balance shaft.😀
Couldn't you have used a socket on that stud
Mine also has a weird knocking noise, getting ready to pull it out. Mine is in a boat 1995.
Is this a video from the 80's ?
Ha ha ha he said pump the lifters by hand
Exhaust tick, they all do it at around 120-130k
These 4.3 vortecs are super easy to work on 10 minets later map gas hammer vise grips pure will
LOL
I keep. Owing across this guy and this v6. Please no one let them work on your cars
How’s the engine rebuild holding up?
bought a used engine and runs good!
Can some one pls help me I’m trying to figure out how to adjust the rockers on my 4.3 engine
I’m trynna do this without pulling the motor.. my exhaust manifold is in the way of the head bolts..
