- Welcome and thank you for joining and allowing me to be a part of your ASL Learning experience!
The purpose of these videos are to help you gain more ASL vocabulary, concepts, practice phrases and opportunity to emphasize on your "facial expressions"; which seems difficult for many ASL students and learners, along with encouraging your sign fluency. through a TRUE ASL VOICES OFF Immersion experience. However if you are an auditory learner & struggle with voices off, it is voice interpreted for you. To Challenge yourself to "mute" to gain receptive skills. If its too fast, change the speed of the video. Each video brings access to those with low-vision blindness for near sighted blindness. At the end of the video, come back here to the drop down box, scroll down and ensure you had learned the new signs (vocabulary) and phrases!
My name is Melissa and I am a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) and I am ASLTA Nationally certified teacher. My passion is to teach and share American Sign Language with individuals such as yourself! Especially, To all that have Deaf family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors or just want to learn this amazing, expressive, hands-on language! ASL is my native language. I grew up with Deaf culture & The Deaf world. I have witnessed moments where I have seen the painful disconnect, lack of communication and relationships and wished more would know how to sign and to create more access to Deaf individuals. I have been a Sign Language Interpreter most of my life from childhood into the professional world, have been teaching and tutoring for over 22+years (high school and college levels) as well as heavily involved with the Deaf and ASL community.

Love the way you teach! I've seen so many different ASL 'teachers' and without a doubt, you are one of the BEST!💖 Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.
Thank you so much for making these videos. I am a CODA as well but I have become very rusty since my parents passed away years ago, plus there is not a huge deaf community in Fort Smith, Ar. I realized that if you don't use it, you lose it, and I learned that from failing a couple of interpreting assessments for video relay. I watch your videos over and over and I will pass the next assessment thanks to you. Sending my love CODA sister keep them coming!
Hello Elizabeth! From a CODA sistah to another.... I am so sorry to hear about your parents passing away. Hope you still find time for Deaf or CODA "Flammmmmily" time and keep that connection. Do you ever go to CODA conferences, or the retreats? We just had one in Las Vegas this past January. Love that you are still doing the "family business" (haha I have heard that a few times from older Deaf folks and Coda's). Did you know there is a pathways for getting some help with Coda's for VRS? Here is a link to check out.. www.sorensonconnections.com/generalinfo-267396.html
They have a really good training program.. hope this helps and perhaps meet you one day! Big hugs. Melissa
I love that these “basic” videos are all signed! Not a bunch of talking and then a sign blah blah blah. I can turn captions and volume off and practice receptive skills and grammar etc since it’s all signed! Your videos are great for every level!
Hey there! Wanted to give a shout out right back at cha.... as you were the one that found this video. So appreciate the comment! Best wishes on your ASL journey!
@@melissacayton1111 I asked about this in the comments of another video, but I think you had said you take students via zoom…? If that’s still the case (if you’re not too famous) I’d love to get info on how to sign up with you!
Thanks for this. Good receptive practice for me :)
Hey there!!! I tell ya.... I was hoping to "teach" sign, but more so to boost up the receptive skills! thanks for continuing to learn!
What in the world? Ms. Melissa how you doing? Just came across this and seen you videos. Had to stop by and say hello to an old friend. Greetings from Colorado. Love your page.
Ricky!!! Wowwww its been awhile! So random and cool! Are you learning ASL? Trying? Love the "what in the world?" thats how I felt when I saw your name... I was like wait... what?!.. in the world?! haha. From Guam to UA-cam! Its been forever. Ya know I think we've known each other since we were what..4th grade? Thanks for the comment! so good to reconnect!
@@melissacayton1111 actually I have no idea how I got here. Algorithms are weird. I went from watching kids who could see colors for the first time and went to people who could hear for the first time. Then I watched a video on a girl who works a fast food place that could sign and a girl who was deaf ordered for herself for the first time.
@@melissacayton1111 yup since 4th. How's the family doing?
A sure way to find someone fluent in ASL is go to the community college and ask for the ASL teacher, but be warned, you soon find yourself taking their class~
I wish there was a way to unite all the followers so we can do a interactive practice! if I had the time! :)
I am a high-school student who has been taking asl for a while and was wondering if you had any tips on how to get into gallaudet university as a hearing student. What I mean is what do you think people look for in asl that shows and advanced skill level.
Hello there! Gallaudet would be a great immersion experience for you. If you have good expressive, (using Classifiers, describing things well) and receptive skills also a heart for the Deaf community, it would be a great thing to do! There are also smaller programs in colleges in several cities, perhaps check whats the closet to you? Or check out Gally! :) Best wishes!! Keep up the skills you learned, I have seen great ASL students... slowly forget since they are no longer practicing. So watching these are a GREAT thing for ya!
What do you think of my ASL story? It's about spreading confidence~
One time, long-ago, my family living room sit-in-circle. My nephew, 5, can catch, right?
I say ready, ball, throw, catch? none, what?
point-to-open-hand, ready? Ball-throw, ball bounce off hand not move, shift I can't.
put-in-my-hand, close-hand, ready? Ball-throw, ball bounce off hand, wait, hand close, shift can't-I++, impossible, frustrated, cry
If finish now, he continue believe wrong catch none, worse++
I walk-over, put-in-hand, walk-back, he throw-to I-catch.
again+++, he start smile, little-bit.
walk-over, hands-almost-meet, flick-out-throw-to-catch.
catch, yes, (cs) close, still catch.
again+++ hands-further-apart-step+++++
soon, across room, throw-back-forth+++++ (mmm)
he catch now.
I wish catch sign that easy.
now, we-all sit-in-circle (to ASL class)
throw-sign easy, catch none.
we-all need practice, continue.
Okay! This was pretty cool, nicely glossed! I visually saw your story.. and love the moral of it as well!
Thank you so much~ I didn't truly understand what Deaf Tree meant until enacting it while out and about, and having to decide which trees were Deaf, I naturally selected my favorite ones, that was when I realized I was culturally Deaf~
The catch story happened 20 years ago, and I remembered it when I hit my first hard plateau in learning ASL, and described it to Bill Vicars to convey how I felt, and that I should be able to print my own confidence after that, and I suppose it's been helping to galvanize my confidence a little here and there. Anyway, what makes it a Deaf story is that telling it includes more people in the story, and the story grows in that way. My class ended a few weeks ago, and we've met afterwards a couple times so far, so just maybe, we all realize that we are mutual support~
And if it doesn't work out, there's an epiphany for that as well: test-me, negate-me, burden wipe-from-shoulder, pressure, feel, cry rain-hard water-level-rise-above-head swim-in, water-level-drink-all, strong, emotion focus become expressive, splosive~
