Incredibly thorough review of the Allak. I have been using the Allak 2 for a couple of years and still learned a couple of new things. You will find that the tent just gets better with use. You have a few small gripes with some details and that is fine, especially that it is tight for 3 large people. However, the doors and venting are so adjustable, you can almost always get adequate ventilation in most weather. You mentioned it, but you really cannot over stress how strong and reliable this tent design and materials are - rain, high winds and major snow falls are just not a concern. Sleep well.

Hi Gijs, thanks a lot for the very valuable review, we have just bought a Allak 2 for the two of us. Before we had a Nallo 4 GT for a 4 person family but now we are traveling again without the kids and use a tandem for the trip and have to reduce the amount of luggage due to the limited transportation capacity. We haven't done our first trip with the Allak yet, but we are very much looking forward to it. Many hints you share for the Allak 3 are probably also relevant for the smaller version.

Regarding condensation. If you view the door at 25:00 you see the winter inner tent door flap is closed. This should only be used in winter and cold conditions for keeping the warmth in. Leave them open and fully rolled down only using the mosquito net on the doors. This also in regards to the vents at the top. Fully open unless it's snowing and winter. Also with the vestibules being big. Leave the opening a little bit open if it's a hot summer day. In my own experience with my allak 2, that helps. Wonderful video! As an apparently experienced Dutch mountaineer you should also know the huge differences of high moisture level in your coastal climate and much lower continental levels 👀

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Btw, just received my Allak 3 in the mail, replacing my Exped Orion Extreme 3, which claims to be an "expedition" tent. I use quotation marks, because in my definition; an expedition usually lasts for a long time, increasing the chance of experiencing all kinds of weather - including being surprised by a sudden storm. Thus! An expedition tent must be able to be pitched in high winds. The Orion Ext. tent is a nightmare to pitch in high winds, constantly tossing the tent poles out of its pockets as one must run like crazy to be able to pitch it - if even. This is first-hand experience from trying to pitch in a winter storm at Finse, Norway. It was just impossible to raise the poles without the wind just pushing it all to the ground. As mentioned, the tent poles, following Exped's pitching instructions, leave two poles unattended as one must pitch the main arc first. So, the wind just kept tossing the tent canopy, eventually, the tent poles would be tossed out as well. In the end, one tent pole got tossed far into the sky, and it was night, so it disappeared into the dark never to be seen again. Forced me to abandon camp and struggle through the night in a storm, making my way to a nearby open cabin. Pewww... Just had to share that story, hehe. Now, after using a Hilleberg Tarra while doing a winter-crossing of Hardangervidda in all kinds of weather, made me convinced that this is the way! I settled on Allak 3, but will probably get myself a winter tent as well, one a bit roomier.
Great detailed review. Pointing out minor flaws with this fine construction. 11:50-27 Find a stick, use a shoe or whatever, distancing the sheet from the ground improves ventilation...

Hi Gijs, thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough review. It’s very much appreciated. I presently have two Nordisk tents for 3 season camping - the Oppland 3 LW (were roomy and only 1.9kg if you haven’t come across it) and the Telemark 2 LW for when I’m doing ultralight bike packing or fastpacking alone. I’m interested in the Hillebergs for four season use and have my eye on the Soulo and Allak. The former for use alone obviously and the latter with my wife and young daughter or winter camping with a friend. I think these would be more stable in higher, variable winds than the tunnel design - Nallo or Kaitum GTs - though I confess I think I will miss some of their vestibule space after my experience with the Oppland. I wondered whether you’d tried carrying the Allak 3 as a backpacking tent and, if so, how you found it. Also whether you have used the vestibule to cook in when you have been kept tent bound. I assumed the angle of the flysheet would assist in that regard despite only being 75cm max depth. Finally, whether you’ve tried the Soulo and whether you found it to be cramped (we are the same height/build it seems). I also wondered whether the dual openings in the roof on the Allak may afford better ventilation than the Soulo. Many thanks for any guidance you can offer. All the best, Mark
Hi Mark, That is a long question with a very long answer. I am not sure in what timezone you are but maybe it is better to have a chat about this by phone. Let's get into email and fix this. My email is info@outdoorguru.com In short: I have a Oppland and find it too low for being very practical. The Allak has been in my backpack but not traveling solo. The weight is not that bad for a 4 season tent but others will have to carry a substantial load too if you go out for a week or so. No, the vestibule is not ideal if you are with three in the tent since folding the inner tent is not really possible then. The Soulo…. No, I don’t think it is cramped but it is neither spacious. I use a 1p Nigor and MSR and they don’t feel cramped either. But… a lightweight 2p is more comfy and practical. Ventilation in all lightweight tents with colder temperatures is always a ‘problem’. I don’t know any tent that does this very well except for heavy poly cotton tipi’s. Like I mentioned: if you like to discuss: email and phone ;-). Cheers, Gijs

I also caught sight of your Abisko dome review which opened up another possibility. I like a lot about that tent and could see some advantages over the Allak - vents, higher denier lower fly, maybe a more sheltered vestibule. But I liked the openness from the Allak (rather than it being half obscured by the fly) and the way in which it is pitched with the clips. I thought this may have some advantages in assembling fast in poor weather and with keeping the fabric uniformly low as you steadily clip it in. But ultimately I noted there was only one available in sand in the entire uk so I quickly purchased it. I have 14 days to reevaluate my decision. I also like your Rab Mythic. I’ve been looking at the range for bikepacking and considering the Western Mountaineering too, summerlite, ultralight and antelope in particular. I think the full length zips have their advantages to vent in warmer weather, which are sadly not present on the 200 and 400 mythic, which is maybe steering me towards WM. Thanks again, Mark

It would be nice if tent manufacturers would supply floor space on different heigts, since if you lay down your feet will be pointing up and the usable length of the tent the really depends on the inclination the tent. I think 35cm up would be good (5cm sleepingpad and 30cm feet). There is a big difference in usable floorspace if your're tall, for example the MSR hubba hubba is very effective for tall people but on paper it is really small.

Dear Raymond, That is a difficult question. I like the weight and the details on the Hilly and if it is a tent for two it is fine. The Fjall is bigger and heavier. What I don’t like about the Fjall is all the wires that go underneath it to keep the dome in shape while pitching. The awnings on the Fjall are a bit bigger. The Fjall is less expensive. But…. The Kerlon 1200 makes a difference in how the tent functions and that makes that I would go for the Hilly 3 but just for two persons. If I was to sleep in the tent with three I would go for the Fjall. Does this makes sense? Cheers, Gijs

@@raymondlogister6828 They suffer both depending on conditions. The Fjall has the vent-openings on the side but I still think I would go for the Hilly with a footprint.... If I could spend the money and the xtra weight is not the problem ;-)
Hi. Im user of keron 4 gt for my family camping with 2 kids, looking for good shelter for quick also space for cooking and talking place, I like your review and wish little bit more regarding shelter function of allak3
If you had to choose only one for four season camping, would you choose Allak 3 or Fjällräven Abisko Dome 3? And if Fjällräven is the one, would you take Abisko Dome or Keb Dome? My main usage would be 4 season backpacking, in the winter time with a pulk and during the summer hiking with backpacks in the northern hemisphere and some kayaking. The Keb Dome 3 weighs a lot, so that is a negative, but with this I'd split the weight with a buddy.
Hi Markus, Tough one. I think the Allak pitches easier (and faster). The wires that hold the feet of the poles together when pitched on the FR's are not always that clever; it takes careful packing. I reviewed the 2 ua-cam.com/video/dVJIpid82k8/v-deo.html and the Keb 3 - in Dutch - ua-cam.com/video/cq1w7Ftd9QQ/v-deo.html - so take a look and them. The ruggedness of the Abisko has proven to be fine to how I use tents. I don't need the heavier Keb but in your case it might be different. The price of the Abisko is strong. The Allak is a bit more functional but is a smallish for three and large enough for two. The weight is about the same as the Abisko the price is € 300,- higher. What I do like about the FR's is the fly fabric mix: heavier where it touches the ground, lighter where heavy is not needed. Like a wrote above... tough one. I hope this helps in any way.... LOL - I love the part where you try to move the tent around and the poles just buckle under the weight ... I wish Hilleberg Red Label tents had the option of replacing the 9mm lightweight poles with their 10mm stronger poles. It's the one reason for me to pick a Staika over an Allak - not the fabric or the other more solid areas, it's the poles, at least for me.
Hello Gijs and thank you for this brilliant report. Unfortunately I don't understand Dutch, but I saw your detailed report about the Fjiällräven Keb Dome 3. I am wavering between these two models for a 3-week motorbike tour, but also for a Scandinavian and island tour in the next few years. Actually I find the Fjällräven very interesting and I think it has a better design (doors, outer mosquito net, better condensation water ventilation), but it is heavier in weight. Which do you think is the better tent for my purposes? Johnny

Hi Kevin, Yes, mesh is on both doors. I like the simplicity of the Hilly a bit better in pitching but the FR has a bit more to it when talking about ventilation. So it would be 1:1 to be honest. Hi again Gijs. I now have an Allak2 and have been out this autumn in wet and windy weather. I have a question. Should I pitch the tent foot or head into the wet wind? If I want to sleep well I won’t want the fabric blowing against my head so would pitch foot into wind. But the way the Allak door opens from the head, and the gutter drops towards the foot, suggests pitching foot into wind will cause rain to blow into a slightly opened door and also up the gutter preventing rain from dripping from it as intended. Perhaps I should pitch head into wind but sleep upside down!! What do you do? !
Hi Peter, First: I understand the question and I never thought about it like you do. I pitch the tent with one opening and awning in the wind so the other is totally sheltered..... I only use one opening when the weather is that bad. Yes, we crawl over each other in the night to go out for a pee🙃. Even when the wind shifts in the night I found this the more secure option. Traditionally I think one would pitch it with the dome with the feet in the wind when the door opens with the zipper at shoulder height. In this case you can open the door half on both sides without wind blowing in the tent. Does this make sense? If not, let's chat. Send me a email and we schedule something. I camp mainly on my own so that would work - the door is the weakest part of the Allak2 as it is relatively long and the angles wide, but perhaps that doesn’t matter... I shall have to try it. As you say the traditional way would be foot to wind and that is how the Hilleberg booklet shows it.
Amazing review my man, i was in my 4 season Keron Gt this weekend, 40 above with humidity in algonquin park. Not enough ventilation, and wished it was free standing because we have Canadian shield where pegs cant go in and you have to use rocks to secure tent. You think Allek 3 is the answer for those problems I just listed? Also what brand of clothes are you wearing ?
Hi! You got a funny name but you probably don’t know it. Knvb: Koninklijke Nederlandse Bergsport Vereniging or Royal Dutch Mountenairing Organisation, a work for them😄. Back to the question: freestanding tents solve that part of your ‘problem’. Ventilation... there is more needed to give this answer. There are so much variables into this equation and wind and temperature difference between in en outside are the biggest ones. And vent-openings of course. With 40 you mean temperature? When is is dry, why not only pitch the innertent solo? It needs some DIY but it is possible.

Outdoorguru Lol my parents are Dutch I live and die by World Cup and euro cup soccer when it’s on, I was born in Canada. Sad about Holland finally getting back in but then it being canceled. I hate to say it but I have a couple Hillebergs . Kedron GT 4 , Rogan 2 , and Akto . I need a free standing tent that will fit two comfortable. The rogan is a bit small . I am also tall at 6’3 . When I am saying 40 it’s in Celsius. So it’s hot ! Pretty cool you got that experience working with the Dutch mountaineering Organization .
@@k.n.v.b1113 Hilleberg tents are among the most 'closed' constructions on the market.. Condensation is an issue you have to be aware of. You can't have a light and compact tent made for hardly any snowdrift with perfect ventilation abilities. By the way, the Netherlands are as flat as your kitchen floor 😉 Might be a respect worthy biking & sailor nation, not that much for Mountaineering 😏 Too much of a luxurious mindset... 🙄

Great review. However, if you need additional "awning" coverage, just swap the "hat" with a tarp. Also, the size of a "person" in tent terms is typically 20". Most people go with larger mats (eg 25"). So I think it's fair to call this a "3 person tent" based on industry convention, but that rarely converts to how people typically use their tents.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I will most likely not use it for longer hikes as the weight is a bit much, but around the coast fly fishing for sea trout and sea bass in Norway. Maybe with a friend and my dog, or just by myself in the spring and fall time. I guess the Dome has superior ventilation. I really like the colour of the sand inner tent. They are both pretty good in the wind most likely.
I'm having a serious problem with deciding if to go with a Allak 2 or a Allak 3. I will do solo mostly but want to have the option to take a friend with me. Would a 2 be sufficient or would it be to crowned and/or would a 3 big for myself alone with all that space? Weight is not an issue for me.

Oh man I'm torn between allak 2 and abisko dome 2 that you also reviewed? What one would you choose if you had to? I would be using it all seasons. Leaning towards allak but your comment on the condensation issue has me worried, how well does the allak handle condensation? Is it good or bad compared to the abisko dome?
Don't worry about condensation. All tents have it in this category. The Allak is a bit easier to pitch but the Abisko has a nice thicker material where it touches the ground.... So 1:1. I like them both for different reasons. Do you need a lightweight tent? Cheers, Gijs

@@outdoorsvoyage6993 Yes, two vents extra helps since up and down chimney effect works this way. The lower part of the Fjall is made from thicker 40D Triple Ripstop polyamide, the rest is 20D Triple Ripstop polyamide. The Hilly is made from 30 Denier Kerlon. Both fabrics suffer from wet/dry and temperature changes but the Hilly a little bit less. Maybe the article on the website gives a bit more info. The biggest thing for me on the Fjall are the wires on the bottom and the lack of guy lines garages. This could be better. Why don't you consider the Keb Dome 2?
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews It's a close call but I think I decided to go with abisko dome, seems overall the better choice for me. I don't go with the keb dome because it seems a bit too heavy. I come from using tents under at 1.5kg so the 3.2 kg from abisko is already a lot to me and I can't make myself go higher. I would also like to use it year around and I'm first now tipping my toes into winter camping so thought this might strike the balance.
hi, does the door in the outher tent also have a mesh door option. I thought the allak 2 had a mesh door in the inner tent and also in the other tent. So that you be able to cook in the vestibules without muscitos.

Dear BZ, Red is beautiful for pictures and becausce of safety but I never like it to be in. I spend a lot of time up North and I like darker tents better. Even with foul weather it still looks inside like the sun is thing. Good against a winter depression though ;-). Cheers, Gijs
Thank you for this really thorough review. However, you use a 4-season tent and complain about the fact that there is condensation or lack of ventilation due to the fact that the outer tent reaches the floor. Using a tent like this in the summer is absolutely overkill. I use the Helags for the summer, but I am looking at the Allak 2 for autumn or winter camping. And I like the idea of being able to move the tent once it is pitched... Well, at the moment it is hard to get your hands on one of these tents anyway, at least in Germany. So i am saving myself some money for the time being. Great review, I subscribed. =)

Hoi Edwin, Ik ben zelf al jaren erg blij met mij oude Primus Eta Power. De nieuwere zijn niet van dezelfde kwaliteit maar voldoen zeker qua gemak. Ook de Trangia sets zijn betrouwbaar. Het hangt er wel een beetje vanaf waar je hem voor wilt gebruiken. Echt koken of meer warm maken. Jetboil is ook prima. Geef me iets meer info of bel anders even. Nummer staat op de website. It is questionable if that tent can be called geodesic because pole crossing points are few and so close to each other. I'd say it is a three pole dome tent. All aluminium parts need a lot energy and several manufacturing stages. Anodizing surface is not a big deal and certainly not specially harmful for environment. So new way (?) to do it sounds quite a lot like green wash. On real expeditions you need more space, so then it certainly is a two person tent
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews That is correct 😄 I just bought a winter tent and it was a choice between some geodesic model or Keron GT -type tunnel. I ended up with a tunnel because it is so spacious and pitching is so straightforward. With four poles and a lot of snow anchors I believe it is strong enough. Mine has also storm flaps so it should sit tight in the ground. I wish you good Outdoor moments and thank you for the videos!

Hi Felipe, Yes it does if pitched in the direct sun and you leave everything opening closed. Best is to open both doors to create a draft. The Hilly retails for €1295 in euro's not in pounds sterling. 1295 pounds sterling would be € 1445 and that is even more expensive. € 1295 is 1160 in euro's. The tent fits in the same category as the more expensive allweather 4-season tent from Fjall/Helsport/Nigor/etc but yes: it is the most expensive one and I do get your point and agree price wise. Light weight ??? Hilleburg do not do a light weight semi geodesic tent. Even the Soulo is too heavy.. Thats why I purchased a Helsport Reinfjell super light 2. And the Nemo Kunai 4 season is even lighter.. I understand that Hilleburg are probably the best when it comes to materials and construction . However. For the solo through hiker The Atko is probably the only option .
Hi Nifty Fifty, Don't take everything what people say for granted: yes, Hilleberg does fine very durable tents and they are certainly lightweight but not the lightest. And that has a lot to do with the durability Hilleberg (and Fjallraven and some others) want to guarantee. I have two Helsports myself and a Nemo but they are not as durable. And... -sorry for writing - the Kunai with its outer tent not touching the ground by far, is not a 4-season tent for Northerns countries with wind and snow. Nemo rates it a 3/4. Like I wrote above: Don't take everything what people - manufacturers - say for granted. I got a new review in the making: the Hilleberg Anaris... Dear Paul, actually they are not that saggy and flappy compared to other silicon coated nylon tentfabrics. I am abroad now and not able to react extensive but I will when I get home in a couple of days. Cheers, Gijs
They are expensive , but I offer three key points : (i) they might save your life in mountain areas (ii) they have phenomenal resale value even when years old ! (iii) they last four or five times longer than other tents So overall - possibly the cheapest tent you will own.
They make great tents. But unfortunately one of the owners of Hilleberg, the son of the founder, has a really bad reputation in our community. I just can’t stand behind this brand, and I have been happy with selling my Tarra and getting a Keb Dome from Fjallraven instead. One thing I really enjoy in my Keb Dome is the neutral light inside, didn’t appreciate the yellow light in the Hilleberg.

I called Hilleberg today because I hade some simple questions.. I talked to Kim and he was very rude and was not interested at all. I was really shocked actually. I love the tents and just bought a new one a few days ago but this dude Kim should not be allowed to speak to customers.

Incredibly thorough review of the Allak. I have been using the Allak 2 for a couple of years and still learned a couple of new things. You will find that the tent just gets better with use. You have a few small gripes with some details and that is fine, especially that it is tight for 3 large people. However, the doors and venting are so adjustable, you can almost always get adequate ventilation in most weather. You mentioned it, but you really cannot over stress how strong and reliable this tent design and materials are - rain, high winds and major snow falls are just not a concern. Sleep well.

Hi Gijs, thanks a lot for the very valuable review, we have just bought a Allak 2 for the two of us. Before we had a Nallo 4 GT for a 4 person family but now we are traveling again without the kids and use a tandem for the trip and have to reduce the amount of luggage due to the limited transportation capacity. We haven't done our first trip with the Allak yet, but we are very much looking forward to it. Many hints you share for the Allak 3 are probably also relevant for the smaller version.

Regarding condensation. If you view the door at 25:00 you see the winter inner tent door flap is closed. This should only be used in winter and cold conditions for keeping the warmth in. Leave them open and fully rolled down only using the mosquito net on the doors. This also in regards to the vents at the top. Fully open unless it's snowing and winter. Also with the vestibules being big. Leave the opening a little bit open if it's a hot summer day. In my own experience with my allak 2, that helps.

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Btw, just received my Allak 3 in the mail, replacing my Exped Orion Extreme 3, which claims to be an "expedition" tent. I use quotation marks, because in my definition; an expedition usually lasts for a long time, increasing the chance of experiencing all kinds of weather - including being surprised by a sudden storm. Thus! An expedition tent must be able to be pitched in high winds. The Orion Ext. tent is a nightmare to pitch in high winds, constantly tossing the tent poles out of its pockets as one must run like crazy to be able to pitch it - if even.
This is first-hand experience from trying to pitch in a winter storm at Finse, Norway.
It was just impossible to raise the poles without the wind just pushing it all to the ground. As mentioned, the tent poles, following Exped's pitching instructions, leave two poles unattended as one must pitch the main arc first. So, the wind just kept tossing the tent canopy, eventually, the tent poles would be tossed out as well.
In the end, one tent pole got tossed far into the sky, and it was night, so it disappeared into the dark never to be seen again. Forced me to abandon camp and struggle through the night in a storm, making my way to a nearby open cabin.
Pewww... Just had to share that story, hehe. Now, after using a Hilleberg Tarra while doing a winter-crossing of Hardangervidda in all kinds of weather, made me convinced that this is the way! I settled on Allak 3, but will probably get myself a winter tent as well, one a bit roomier.
Great detailed review. Pointing out minor flaws with this fine construction.
11:50-27 Find a stick, use a shoe or whatever, distancing the sheet from the ground improves ventilation...

Hi Gijs, thank you for taking the time to do such a thorough review. It’s very much appreciated. I presently have two Nordisk tents for 3 season camping - the Oppland 3 LW (were roomy and only 1.9kg if you haven’t come across it) and the Telemark 2 LW for when I’m doing ultralight bike packing or fastpacking alone. I’m interested in the Hillebergs for four season use and have my eye on the Soulo and Allak. The former for use alone obviously and the latter with my wife and young daughter or winter camping with a friend. I think these would be more stable in higher, variable winds than the tunnel design - Nallo or Kaitum GTs - though I confess I think I will miss some of their vestibule space after my experience with the Oppland. I wondered whether you’d tried carrying the Allak 3 as a backpacking tent and, if so, how you found it. Also whether you have used the vestibule to cook in when you have been kept tent bound. I assumed the angle of the flysheet would assist in that regard despite only being 75cm max depth. Finally, whether you’ve tried the Soulo and whether you found it to be cramped (we are the same height/build it seems). I also wondered whether the dual openings in the roof on the Allak may afford better ventilation than the Soulo. Many thanks for any guidance you can offer. All the best, Mark
Hi Mark, That is a long question with a very long answer. I am not sure in what timezone you are but maybe it is better to have a chat about this by phone. Let's get into email and fix this. My email is info@outdoorguru.com In short: I have a Oppland and find it too low for being very practical. The Allak has been in my backpack but not traveling solo. The weight is not that bad for a 4 season tent but others will have to carry a substantial load too if you go out for a week or so. No, the vestibule is not ideal if you are with three in the tent since folding the inner tent is not really possible then. The Soulo…. No, I don’t think it is cramped but it is neither spacious. I use a 1p Nigor and MSR and they don’t feel cramped either. But… a lightweight 2p is more comfy and practical. Ventilation in all lightweight tents with colder temperatures is always a ‘problem’. I don’t know any tent that does this very well except for heavy poly cotton tipi’s. Like I mentioned: if you like to discuss: email and phone ;-). Cheers, Gijs

I also caught sight of your Abisko dome review which opened up another possibility. I like a lot about that tent and could see some advantages over the Allak - vents, higher denier lower fly, maybe a more sheltered vestibule. But I liked the openness from the Allak (rather than it being half obscured by the fly) and the way in which it is pitched with the clips. I thought this may have some advantages in assembling fast in poor weather and with keeping the fabric uniformly low as you steadily clip it in. But ultimately I noted there was only one available in sand in the entire uk so I quickly purchased it. I have 14 days to reevaluate my decision. I also like your Rab Mythic. I’ve been looking at the range for bikepacking and considering the Western Mountaineering too, summerlite, ultralight and antelope in particular. I think the full length zips have their advantages to vent in warmer weather, which are sadly not present on the 200 and 400 mythic, which is maybe steering me towards WM. Thanks again, Mark

It would be nice if tent manufacturers would supply floor space on different heigts, since if you lay down your feet will be pointing up and the usable length of the tent the really depends on the inclination the tent. I think 35cm up would be good (5cm sleepingpad and 30cm feet).
There is a big difference in usable floorspace if your're tall, for example the MSR hubba hubba is very effective for tall people but on paper it is really small.

Dear Raymond, That is a difficult question. I like the weight and the details on the Hilly and if it is a tent for two it is fine. The Fjall is bigger and heavier. What I don’t like about the Fjall is all the wires that go underneath it to keep the dome in shape while pitching. The awnings on the Fjall are a bit bigger. The Fjall is less expensive. But…. The Kerlon 1200 makes a difference in how the tent functions and that makes that I would go for the Hilly 3 but just for two persons. If I was to sleep in the tent with three I would go for the Fjall. Does this makes sense? Cheers, Gijs

If you had to choose only one for four season camping, would you choose Allak 3 or Fjällräven Abisko Dome 3? And if Fjällräven is the one, would you take Abisko Dome or Keb Dome? My main usage would be 4 season backpacking, in the winter time with a pulk and during the summer hiking with backpacks in the northern hemisphere and some kayaking. The Keb Dome 3 weighs a lot, so that is a negative, but with this I'd split the weight with a buddy.
Hi Markus, Tough one. I think the Allak pitches easier (and faster). The wires that hold the feet of the poles together when pitched on the FR's are not always that clever; it takes careful packing. I reviewed the 2 ua-cam.com/video/dVJIpid82k8/v-deo.html and the Keb 3 - in Dutch - ua-cam.com/video/cq1w7Ftd9QQ/v-deo.html - so take a look and them. The ruggedness of the Abisko has proven to be fine to how I use tents. I don't need the heavier Keb but in your case it might be different. The price of the Abisko is strong. The Allak is a bit more functional but is a smallish for three and large enough for two. The weight is about the same as the Abisko the price is € 300,- higher. What I do like about the FR's is the fly fabric mix: heavier where it touches the ground, lighter where heavy is not needed. Like a wrote above... tough one. I hope this helps in any way.... LOL - I love the part where you try to move the tent around and the poles just buckle under the weight ... I wish Hilleberg Red Label tents had the option of replacing the 9mm lightweight poles with their 10mm stronger poles. It's the one reason for me to pick a Staika over an Allak - not the fabric or the other more solid areas, it's the poles, at least for me.

Unfortunately I don't understand Dutch, but I saw your detailed report about the Fjiällräven Keb Dome 3.
I am wavering between these two models for a 3-week motorbike tour, but also for a Scandinavian and island tour in the next few years.
Actually I find the Fjällräven very interesting and I think it has a better design (doors, outer mosquito net, better condensation water ventilation), but it is heavier in weight.
Which do you think is the better tent for my purposes? Johnny

Hi Kevin, Yes, mesh is on both doors. I like the simplicity of the Hilly a bit better in pitching but the FR has a bit more to it when talking about ventilation. So it would be 1:1 to be honest. Hi again Gijs. I now have an Allak2 and have been out this autumn in wet and windy weather. I have a question. Should I pitch the tent foot or head into the wet wind? If I want to sleep well I won’t want the fabric blowing against my head so would pitch foot into wind. But the way the Allak door opens from the head, and the gutter drops towards the foot, suggests pitching foot into wind will cause rain to blow into a slightly opened door and also up the gutter preventing rain from dripping from it as intended. Perhaps I should pitch head into wind but sleep upside down!! What do you do? !
Hi Peter, First: I understand the question and I never thought about it like you do. I pitch the tent with one opening and awning in the wind so the other is totally sheltered..... I only use one opening when the weather is that bad. Yes, we crawl over each other in the night to go out for a pee🙃. Even when the wind shifts in the night I found this the more secure option. Traditionally I think one would pitch it with the dome with the feet in the wind when the door opens with the zipper at shoulder height. In this case you can open the door half on both sides without wind blowing in the tent. Does this make sense? If not, let's chat. Send me a email and we schedule something. I camp mainly on my own so that would work - the door is the weakest part of the Allak2 as it is relatively long and the angles wide, but perhaps that doesn’t matter... I shall have to try it. As you say the traditional way would be foot to wind and that is how the Hilleberg booklet shows it.
Amazing review my man, i was in my 4 season Keron Gt this weekend, 40 above with humidity in algonquin park. Not enough ventilation, and wished it was free standing because we have Canadian shield where pegs cant go in and you have to use rocks to secure tent. You think Allek 3 is the answer for those problems I just listed?

Hi! You got a funny name but you probably don’t know it. Knvb: Koninklijke Nederlandse Bergsport Vereniging or Royal Dutch Mountenairing Organisation, a work for them😄. Back to the question: freestanding tents solve that part of your ‘problem’. Ventilation... there is more needed to give this answer. There are so much variables into this equation and wind and temperature difference between in en outside are the biggest ones. And vent-openings of course. With 40 you mean temperature? When is is dry, why not only pitch the innertent solo? It needs some DIY but it is possible.

Lol my parents are Dutch I live and die by World Cup and euro cup soccer when it’s on, I was born in Canada. Sad about Holland finally getting back in but then it being canceled. I hate to say it but I have a couple Hillebergs . Kedron GT 4 , Rogan 2 , and Akto . I need a free standing tent that will fit two comfortable. The rogan is a bit small . I am also tall at 6’3 . When I am saying 40 it’s in Celsius. So it’s hot !

Condensation is an issue you have to be aware of.
You can't have a light and compact tent made for hardly any snowdrift with perfect ventilation abilities.
By the way, the Netherlands are as flat as your kitchen floor 😉 Might be a respect worthy biking & sailor nation, not that much for Mountaineering 😏

Great review. However, if you need additional "awning" coverage, just swap the "hat" with a tarp. Also, the size of a "person" in tent terms is typically 20". Most people go with larger mats (eg 25"). So I think it's fair to call this a "3 person tent" based on industry convention, but that rarely converts to how people typically use their tents.

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I will most likely not use it for longer hikes as the weight is a bit much, but around the coast fly fishing for sea trout and sea bass in Norway. Maybe with a friend and my dog, or just by myself in the spring and fall time. I guess the Dome has superior ventilation.

I'm having a serious problem with deciding if to go with a Allak 2 or a Allak 3. I will do solo mostly but want to have the option to take a friend with me. Would a 2 be sufficient or would it be to crowned and/or would a 3 big for myself alone with all that space? Weight is not an issue for me.
Allak 2 is the one you want!

Oh man I'm torn between allak 2 and abisko dome 2 that you also reviewed? What one would you choose if you had to? I would be using it all seasons. Leaning towards allak but your comment on the condensation issue has me worried, how well does the allak handle condensation? Is it good or bad compared to the abisko dome?
Don't worry about condensation. All tents have it in this category. The Allak is a bit easier to pitch but the Abisko has a nice thicker material where it touches the ground.... So 1:1. I like them both for different reasons. Do you need a lightweight tent? Cheers, Gijs

@@outdoorsvoyage6993 Yes, two vents extra helps since up and down chimney effect works this way. The lower part of the Fjall is made from thicker 40D Triple Ripstop polyamide, the rest is 20D Triple Ripstop polyamide. The Hilly is made from 30 Denier Kerlon. Both fabrics suffer from wet/dry and temperature changes but the Hilly a little bit less. Maybe the article on the website gives a bit more info. The biggest thing for me on the Fjall are the wires on the bottom and the lack of guy lines garages. This could be better. Why don't you consider the Keb Dome 2?
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews It's a close call but I think I decided to go with abisko dome, seems overall the better choice for me. I don't go with the keb dome because it seems a bit too heavy. I come from using tents under at 1.5kg so the 3.2 kg from abisko is already a lot to me and I can't make myself go higher. I would also like to use it year around and I'm first now tipping my toes into winter camping so thought this might strike the balance.

hi, does the door in the outher tent also have a mesh door option. I thought the allak 2 had a mesh door in the inner tent and also in the other tent. So that you be able to cook in the vestibules without muscitos.

Dear BZ, Red is beautiful for pictures and becausce of safety but I never like it to be in. I spend a lot of time up North and I like darker tents better. Even with foul weather it still looks inside like the sun is thing. Good against a winter depression though ;-). Cheers, Gijs
Thank you for this really thorough review. However, you use a 4-season tent and complain about the fact that there is condensation or lack of ventilation due to the fact that the outer tent reaches the floor. Using a tent like this in the summer is absolutely overkill. I use the Helags for the summer, but I am looking at the Allak 2 for autumn or winter camping. And I like the idea of being able to move the tent once it is pitched... Well, at the moment it is hard to get your hands on one of these tents anyway, at least in Germany. So i am saving myself some money for the time being.

Hoi Edwin, Ik ben zelf al jaren erg blij met mij oude Primus Eta Power. De nieuwere zijn niet van dezelfde kwaliteit maar voldoen zeker qua gemak. Ook de Trangia sets zijn betrouwbaar. Het hangt er wel een beetje vanaf waar je hem voor wilt gebruiken. Echt koken of meer warm maken. Jetboil is ook prima. Geef me iets meer info of bel anders even. Nummer staat op de website. It is questionable if that tent can be called geodesic because pole crossing points are few and so close to each other. I'd say it is a three pole dome tent.
All aluminium parts need a lot energy and several manufacturing stages. Anodizing surface is not a big deal and certainly not specially harmful for environment. So new way (?) to do it sounds quite a lot like green wash.
On real expeditions you need more space, so then it certainly is a two person tent

I just bought a winter tent and it was a choice between some geodesic model or Keron GT -type tunnel. I ended up with a tunnel because it is so spacious and pitching is so straightforward. With four poles and a lot of snow anchors I believe it is strong enough. Mine has also storm flaps so it should sit tight in the ground.

Hi Felipe, Yes it does if pitched in the direct sun and you leave everything opening closed. Best is to open both doors to create a draft. The Hilly retails for €1295 in euro's not in pounds sterling. 1295 pounds sterling would be € 1445 and that is even more expensive. € 1295 is 1160 in euro's. The tent fits in the same category as the more expensive allweather 4-season tent from Fjall/Helsport/Nigor/etc but yes: it is the most expensive one and I do get your point and agree price wise. Light weight ??? Hilleburg do not do a light weight semi geodesic tent. Even the Soulo is too heavy.. Thats why I purchased a Helsport Reinfjell super light 2. And the Nemo Kunai 4 season is even lighter.. I understand that Hilleburg are probably the best when it comes to materials and construction . However. For the solo through hiker The Atko is probably the only option .
Hi Nifty Fifty, Don't take everything what people say for granted: yes, Hilleberg does fine very durable tents and they are certainly lightweight but not the lightest. And that has a lot to do with the durability Hilleberg (and Fjallraven and some others) want to guarantee. I have two Helsports myself and a Nemo but they are not as durable. And... -sorry for writing - the Kunai with its outer tent not touching the ground by far, is not a 4-season tent for Northerns countries with wind and snow. Nemo rates it a 3/4. Like I wrote above: Don't take everything what people - manufacturers - say for granted. I got a new review in the making: the Hilleberg Anaris... Why are hilleberg so expensive

Dear Paul, actually they are not that saggy and flappy compared to other silicon coated nylon tentfabrics. I am abroad now and not able to react extensive but I will when I get home in a couple of days. Cheers, Gijs
They are expensive , but I offer three key points : (i) they might save your life in mountain areas (ii) they have phenomenal resale value even when years old ! (iii) they last four or five times longer than other tents
So overall - possibly the cheapest tent you will own.
They make great tents. But unfortunately one of the owners of Hilleberg, the son of the founder, has a really bad reputation in our community. I just can’t stand behind this brand, and I have been happy with selling my Tarra and getting a Keb Dome from Fjallraven instead. One thing I really enjoy in my Keb Dome is the neutral light inside, didn’t appreciate the yellow light in the Hilleberg.

I called Hilleberg today because I hade some simple questions.. I talked to Kim and he was very rude and was not interested at all. I was really shocked actually. I love the tents and just bought a new one a few days ago but this dude Kim should not be allowed to speak to customers.
