I bought the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 GT a few years ago, and this tent is made for what ever mother nature want to trow at you.
But with a compression bag, poles and pegs the weight is around 4,3 kg.
Therefore I wanted a Niak for the hikes with a lot of walking and little “camping”.
I have now tried to get hold of a Niak (sand) in Norway the last 18 months, but this evening I gave up and ordered myself a Hilleberg Rogen.
2,1 kg Hilleberg tent for the spring, summer and early fall. I have had a few tents before, but Hilleberg is at a different level when it comes to weather resistance and quality.
Thank you for a great video, and thank you for sharing with us 🏕🐾🎣

Hi Joshua. I own the Allak 2 which I primarily use for canoeing and car camping. I had a Soulo which I sold because I rarely adventured out in extreme conditions while solo, so the security of that fine tent was not worth carrying the weight. I also have a Nammatj 3 GT which is primarily used for winter adventuring. I haven't run into the high wind conditions you experienced while using the Allak 2, but I can imagine it would be tough to handle setup and breakdown in very harsh conditions. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

Hi Dominolastley, thanks for sharing that information. I've got a Nammatj as well (and a video about it), which I find far better suited to high winds. Thanks for sharing your experience with your tents!

You raise some really good points for pitching the Allak in high winds. No doubt fine normally, but not ideal when windy.

@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors How tall are you ? I am considering a Nammatj 2, but I suspect my sleeping bag will be in contact with the inner tent in the foot end of the tent. Not a good combination in winter. I am 186 cm and I use sleeping bags designed for people up to 200 cm.
What is your experience with the Nammatj 2 so far ?

@@sveinottoaar2543 hi there. Thanks for your interest. Well, I'm really unique in a way. I'm only 178 cm tall, but my torso length is about 80 cm (which is 20-30 cm longer than "normal" according to google). This means i have very short legs, and a VERY long torso. When i sit up in the Nammatj 2, my head always touches the top of the tent, but when I lay down, I do have some room and my feet don't touch the ends of the tent (but just barely). For you, at 186 cm, accounting for the loft of your sleeping - I feel confident to say that your head and toes would touch the tent when you lay down. I've actually had several requests for a Nammatj 2 review video, which I am working on now. It just takes a lot of time to get the necessary B-Roll video. The Nammat 2 review video should be ready in the next couple of months though. Which tents are you considering buying?

@@JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors Reading your reply I will stick to the ones I already own. 😃 I am covered for most situations, but found the Nammatj 2 very interesting for solo trips during winter. Its strength and easy handle were attractive. I have a Kaitum 2 for that use today, but as you probably know it is a red label tent. I also recently bought a Keron 3 , which I have owned the GT version of before. The Keron 3 is my only black label tent. Most of my tents are red label, and I have one yellow label, the Enan, which is over all the one I use the most during a year. Thank you so much for your answer. Much appreciated 🙏🏻 Looking forward to your review of the Nammatj anyway. ATB, Svein.

I thought the Staika was vulnerable to this (even with 10mm poles) so I definitely agree. Really looking forward to your Nammatj2 review done in the mountains of course.... ATB and just subbed too. Then your solution is a Fjallraven Keb Dome 2. It will address your setup problems and is of equal quality (except at a weight penalty due to slightly larger size and stronger/thicker flysheet). 40 denier very strong silicone impregnated nylon flysheet and an equivalent durable inner floor. Tunnel tents do make for fast set-up in the wind but also buffet a lot… when the wind is crazy and constantly changing direction, it is nicer to be in a more structured dome tent.

Haha, I did think you replaced H.tent with another brand. I was keen to find out what is another good tent to use because there are some. Turns out you stick with Hilleberg. My first hilleberg was Staika, my most used Hilleberg tent for motorcycling and kayaking trips. Easy, fast to set up. comparing to Allak my tent has 2 in one guidelines on each corner what doesn’t tangle as Allaks separate 2 lines on each corner. Also you said I don’t have to wrap lines around poles. It’s 10mm poles and stronger fabric what alll makes difference in bad weather. I also have Anjan 2 for hiking but I do prefer self standing… Thanks!

A bit late here but I’m looking at the allak 2 for bicycle touring. I want something more durable than The hubba hubba. Was looking at the Nammatj 2 (non gt) and Nallo 2 gt as well. Struggling to pick but the free standing nature of allak appeals. Will be used in north and South America Europe and south east Asia etc

Hi there, personally, I find the Allak pretty fiddly to setup, but everyone has different preferences. Im sure a lot of people would disagree with me. I think the Nammatj 2 would be overkill for bikepacking, personally. I do a lot of bikepacking as well, and find that weight is even more critical than it is for backpacking. Friends of mine have said good things about some of the Mont free standing tents out there. More robust than MSR, and with the option of both 3 and 4 season inners. What did you end up going with may i ask? I recently bought a Northface Stormbreak 1, specifically for bikepacking, but it's pretty spartan (and probably way too small for the size of trip you will be doing).

Hi Joshua, I am experiencing a certain form of agony as I am choosing between the Nammatj and the Allak.. we live in North Queensland (Australia), and would only use it for Tasmanian & NZ alpine summer camping, Alaska summer, and Nepal trek (5000m+).. In Alaska, the tent would be mostly used for a long kayaking trip, with lots of sand and hard rock surfaces, for which I can see the free-standing nature of the Allak being an advantage over the need of having to peg every corner as the Nammatj requires... would love to hear your thoughts. Also please make a video about 4 seasons sleeping bags !!! (max -15/20) Thank you for all your knowledge sharing 🙏
PS: we are too very tall people (6'5 and 5'10), so we were a bit concerned after watching your Nammatj review as it looked a bit snugged!

Hello Marie C, thanks for your interest in my videos. It's funny you say that. I traded my Allak to a guy in Tasmania (he gave me his Nammatj). In hindsight, I suspect he regrets the trade. In my experience, if there is much wind at all, the Allak requires a lot more pegging out than the Nammatj does. To be honest, I think for pretty much anyone that is 6'5", most tents are (unfortunately) going to feel a bit cozy? I do know the Allak is only a few cm longer than the Nammatj, so the difference might not be significant for you. There are many that would disagree with me, but I just find the Allak is not great for wind. Perhaps you could try a Nammatj 3 (same weight as the Allak 2) and sleep at a diagonal? The Staika is a fair bit longer than the Allak, and sets up faster, but the weight is really starting to get up there. Regarding sleeping bags, I'm going to be moving back to Northern Minnesota next year, and will start doing videos on extreme cold gear / trips, so hopefully I can deliver on what you are looking for. Thanks again!

Hiya I sold my allak too as I didn’t rate it in high winds, seemed very flimsy. Another think that bugged me was the top hat, I thought it looked odd. I own a soulo red label which I can’t fault it’s an amazing tent and I’ve bought a staika which for me is the perfect tent, yeah it’s heavy but who cares it’s a beast of a tent and your only talking a couple of kilos different from the soulo. • @JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors
      @JoshuaJohnsonOutdoors  2 роки тому

Hi Danskbb, that's a good question. It has great ventilation for a 4 season tent, but to be honest, if ventilation is really important to you - I would suggest a 3 season tent instead of a 4 season tent. With the fly that goes all the way to the ground (on the Allak and similar red label tents) it's prevents most of the air from circulating under the fly and over the inner tent. Does that help?

So i do agree, hehe ;)
In Fact i just came back two days ago from a Three week long trip on Corsica, the fourth-largest island in the Mediterranean only using the Soulo and a Tarp. It is absolutely amazing how much space there is for such a strong tent that you can carry around in a backpack and how cosy it is inside!
I think the Allak 3 is also an amazing tent, but I totally agree with your point.
The STAIKA would be on my top list if HILLEBERG would upgrade it with features from the Allak. In my mind it is a bit outdated. Still an amazing tent that has a very specific use in mind.

Hi Bima Zivanovic, I would say the ventilation on the Allak is far better than the Staika. The Allak has extra vents that the Staika doesn't have. I considered the same thing before I bought the Allak. I just felt the Staika was too heavy for the trips I tend to do - it probably serves better as a small basecamp style tent. Granted, I'd say the Staika is much easier and faster to setup than the Allak. Thanks for having a look.
