@@BelfastBikeroh, I’d say Obama was smart, absolutely! The thing about TWW ⟷ actual reality is, in a high-level, aspirational tv show it’s possible to suspend our disbelief. We can imagine that a person such as the PB character would actually run for President, and would actually win the election. And that feels so good! President Obama was, and is, an intelligent, cultivated, calm person. He’s simply not up to the idealized version of a President Bartlet, because someone like that would be very unlikely to survive the primaries, let alone the horrific tsunami of lies, distortions, sheer hate and garbage if a Presidential election. Unfortunately.
I always wondered why Zed would not smile to CJ at the end. Now I think that he might have thought that making a smile would be disrespectful to his loyal aides, who went through hell to clean up the mess he caused.
An hour of my life has been lost researching this, so I have to make this comment. In the video description, you put "Season 3 episode 17" but it turns out that's not a good way to describe the episode, you should also have put the title "The U.S. Poet Laureate" to help identify the episode. - In my DVD box set and on Rotten Tomato this episode is Season 3 episode 16 - On IMDB this episode is Season 3 episode 17, same as your description! Not sure why the discrepancy but given that I'm about to watch "Season 3 Episode 16 - The U.S. Poet Laureate" I feel I have devoted enough time to this:)
The reason is a special episode. Season 3 premiere was pushed back by the events of September 11th, and the filmed and produced a special Episode called 'Isaac and Ishmael' which they showed prior to the actual season 3. Sonetimes it's counted as first episode of S3, sometimes it's counted as S03 E00, or not at all - hence the difference in episode counts on different websites :)
The president made a mildly disparaging remark about his Republican opponent's intelligence to an interviewer, ostensibly thinking he was off air, but in fact he was on. But here CJ thinks the president knew the whole time that he was on and he gives a telling look.
@@devilpistons1269 To add a bit more, he was doing TV interviews remotely, and after each one the interviewer asked the President privately what he thought about his opponent, and the President refused to answer. CJ says he only did it in Philadelphia because they were the only ones who accidentally kept the feed running after the interview. Every other interview had a red light immediately after. Also, CJ figured it out because she is the White House Press Secretary and had been avoiding questions about it from the press for a week, and was wondering why the President wasn't walking back his statement.
There’s no context missing. The president makes an open mic gaff in the first scene of this episode. The entire episode is about damage control from the gaff. This is the final scene of the episode when the president essentially tells CJ it was intentional.

“That was old school”
Bartlet is famous for his inability to shut up, so using one of his rare moments of silence for this scene was sheer brilliance.

I definitely felt the gun metaphor was out of character for him when I first watched the episode. Then, when we got to this scene, I was like "Ah".
I will binge watch again!
There was a reason that CJ was the one and only name that Leo had in mind to replace him if there was ever a need.
I hope one day America gets a commander in chief that we can all look at with the same amount of pride that CJ just did
I so much wish for that day, every time i watch this series.

Of course we are missing the context here, but whatever, it's a clever exchange
