Charlie. Instant like, as a character. So darn glad they found THIS actor to play him. President Jimmy Carter would have been delighted to hire Charlie. R.I.P
Disagree. Why wouldn't any actor be able to play Charlie? But looking up some info about his casting, it appeared that Dule WAS the only kid a casting director thought of when creating the Charlie-part.
What makes it one of the best shows is that there are so many "best scenes." The list is really long. I watch a lot about movies and TV shows and so much goes into them and to come out a successs is really rare. This show really hit it out of the park, again, and again, again....
The things this video left out: how Josh and Leo were concerned about the optics of a black man serving the President, Fitz setting Leo straight on the matter, Bartlet losing his cool over not being able to find his glasses, Charlie figuring out where they are, and Leo and Jed talking about hiring him.
Funnily enough, it feels like the optics of Josh demanding food from Donna is the thing that sticks out here - he wouldn't do that to Toby or CJ! At least Donna would rise through the ranks by the final season though.
Holy cow! I am in awe of this scene. President Bartlett made the job offer personal to Charlie. He took the time to make it personal, important to Charlie. When Charlie said, "I've never felt this way before", I was right there was him, feeling like he felt.
It was the same with Ainsley Hayes. When he met her (the second time), she was filled with anxiety, but the President cut through it simply by asking if her father was proud of her.
Going back to this scene after Lily Tomlin joins the cast, just that little detail they remembered a few seasons later. Love Charlie so much, love this entire cast.
I've watched my box set a dozen-ish times over the years and would never have noticed that. 👍 Allison and Dulé shaking hands... "Hi, nice to meet you.". 😛
Watching this clip and the scene where Bartlett blows up at Charlie and Josh and then watching throughout the entire series how the relationship between both Charlie and President Bartlett grows into a father/son dynamic. The writers REALLY hit this out of the ballpark....no, it was a Grand Slam out of this world!!! There will NEVER be another show like it again.
Charlie humanised and grounded Jed at a time it was sorely needed in that moment. The growth of Charlie as a character was one of the best in that series, marked by the fact that although he showed deference to the job, he became unafraid to speak to the President as a person, rather than the position.
This scene is actually super important for a different reason than the obvious: the song playing, "Charlie in the Oval Office," was reconfigured by W.G. Snuffy Walden to become what we know to be the West Wing theme song. Prior to this, it was a synthesized version of something else. If you love the West Wing opening credits song, you have this theme to thank, along with Walden for whom the West Wing remains his greatest work.
It was a synthesized version of Charlie in the Oval Office. Remember these shows were taped before the show ever went on air…the pilot had no opening credits…well the closest was what became the ending theme song playing as Leo did a walk and talk wander through the West Wing hallways, and then the next few episodes had the synthesized Charlie in the Oval Office opening because Walden hadn’t had a chance to do a full symphony recording of the opening theme yet.
@@olivegreenpants7153 I was thinking the same thing. Biden will deliver the eulogy and appropriately so. Could you imagine if orange did it! It would have to be about him. And Carter was lucky, he won't have to see the devastation that will happen in the next 2 years.
May this show forever serve as a reminder that - especially in troubled times such as these - we must never stop trying to live up to the better angels of our nature, both as individuals, and as a nation.
Unfortunately, someone who actually was a decent and caring man in the White House just passed away. They are few and far between though. RIP President Carter
So many "Charlie Moments" in the Archives of The West Wing...we ALL have that "one" that we instantly think of when seeing or hearing or thinking of Charlie! Mine will always be the moment Charlie stood up for CJ when a young man was being disrespectful to her while he was waiting to see Charlie. It took me back to my young self when I stepped in to defend my little sister from a bully classmate who had been harassing her. After all was said and done, my sister grabbed my hand and said "lets go home" and she never let go of my hand till we got to the front door! A Tattoo I hold dearly on my Soul! If The Powers That Be ever tried to do a revival of the West Wing, I'd love to see Charlie as the VP. I wouldn't want him as the President because I think seeing the journey to that office would be more interesting that him as President.
@@BTBEV3469 No, I don't mean why was the sister never shown but why was Charlie offered the position and why did he accept, after what Josh had told him the job entails? Extended hours and trips at short notice are clearly not compatible with taking care of his sister. One hesitates to criticise Aaron Sorkin but I don't think he'd thought this through.
