I especially liked Danny and Cory. However, I realized Chuck was a good singer but questioned if he wanted to go alone instead of sharing the spotlight with the other two singers. Anyone knows his reason for wanting to leave "Three Dog Nights" which was a great band.
One of those songs that never fails to lift my spirits. No deep meanings here, just a celebration of life's simple pleasures: Good wine, good company, and good music!
Fun facts this song was written by Hoyt Axton who is a true character in the world of music. Amazing storyteller. And his mother was Mae Boren Axton who wrote the Elvis hit Heartbreak Hotel. She was known as the Queen Mother of Nashville. Wrote a lot of hits herself.
I read somewhere that the original lyrics were "Jeremiah was a preacher" which makes more sense but the band didn't like the way it sounded and changed preacher to bullfrog.
My wife and I were privileged to catch a show in the fall of '84. Orange Blossom Special Ball Room. The look on their faces was priceless..long hair in a redneck kinda place. 💥🗯💥🗯💚when they went into their medley the house came alive. Best I've heard. ❤
Hi, hope you're doing well. My very first film I ever did was with Stella Stevens as a director and she knew Hoyt Axton. He was in town and I got to sit across the table from both of them while they talked. It was written as a children's song for a TV show that never happened. Three Dog Night did not write their own Tunes they just did covers and I'm fine with that. Read the book One is the Loneliest Number by Johnny greenspoon. Thank you
Hoyt Axton is best known as a country singer and song writer and sometimes actor. He played the inventor father in Gremlins. Della and the Dealer, Rusty Old Halo, and Wild Bull Rider are just a few of his songs.
There is a Christmas Carol Joy to the World, it is a totally different song though. I would suggest One, An Old Fashion Love Song or Mama Told Me Not To Come for reactions as well.
I don't know what "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" means, and do you know what? I don't really care. Some songs are just so darn good and linger in your soul that whatever a lyric means is sometimes irrelevant. Sometimes the purpose of a song is just to have a good time, and Three Dog Night always delivered in that respect.
"Bull Frog" is slang for Frenchman...So Jeremiah was from France and spoke French which is why he couldn't understand a single word he said and why he had some "mighty fine wine".
ChatGPT 4 says: "Jeremiah was a bullfrog" is the opening line of the song "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night. The songwriter, Hoyt Axton, has explained that the line doesn't really have any deep or symbolic meaning. Instead, it was a nonsensical placeholder that he initially intended to replace with something else. However, the band liked it, so it stayed in the song. The line is catchy and memorable, which can help draw listeners into the song. However, it's not meant to convey a specific message or theme beyond simply setting a lighthearted and playful tone for the song.
@@PatrickSmith The fact that Hoyt Axton was creating a line that doesn't really have any deep or symbolic meaning that he intended to replace with something else doesn't refute the fact that "Bull Frog" was slang for Frenchman. The English derogatorily called the French "frogs" and specifically Frenchmen "bull frogs" as early as 1750. The term was brought to the US, without the derogatory stigma, by US soldiers returning from Europe after World War II.
Jeremiah WAS a bullfrog -- a croaker. The prophet Jeremiah talked about how Israel was going to be judged by God and punished for its transgressions. Prophets of doom were called "croakers." But Jeremiah also prophesied the restoration of Israel and the coming of the Messiah. Thus, "Joy to the World!"

@@christophercombs3501 Interesting! I’ve never heard that explanation. It makes sense. I was a kid when this came out and have always loved it but when she was asking all those questions I was thinking I really wouldn’t be able to explain it. It’s just a fun song.
This was almost an anthem back in the early 70's when TDN was a HUGE band. Their music could just take you away. Great vocals, Lyrics and sing along rhythms. Can you imagine hearing this the first time and sitting still? The initial 30 seconds and you are IN!
Three Dog Night always brings the soul. And yeah, this was an incredibly popular Sing-along song. We Sing it on the playground but even now, in the right setting, if you were just a randomly start singing the chorus, there would be other people that would join in. And no it doesn't have anything to do with the standard Christmas Carol called Joy to the World. This was one of those rock bands that everybody just like. They're so likeable. And they featured three guys that can sing their asses off. They had several big hits and they are all fantastic songs: One, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Road To Shambala, I've Never Been To Spain, That Ain't The Way That It Works, etc.
Hey Britt. I grew up (well some say I've never grown up, but that's another story) listening to this music. As far as what I remember about this song, some thought it was in reference to Jeremiah, the Prophet in the Bible. But according to Hoyt Axton, the country singer who wrote the song, he was sipping wine and trying to come up with the lyrics to the song and Jeremiah was a Bullfrog was the first thing that popped into his head and it just stuck. Funny how people just come up with lyrics like that, but it was one of Three Dog Night's biggest hits. Thanks to your Mom-in-law for suggesting this, brings back many memories!
The man who wrote this song was named Hoyt Axton. He played the dad in the movie "Gremlins". His mother cowrote "Heartbreak Hotel". They are the only mother and son to each write a number 1 song.
Love this group. They were the number 1 group in the early 70s for 5 yrs in a row. You should ck out their video singing "Eli's coming". Their vocals will blow you away.
Each of TDN's singers sang a No. 1 song. Chuck Negron here on "Joy To The World", Cory Wells on "Mama Told Me Not To Come" and Danny Hutton on "Black And White". They had 21 top 40 hits from 1969-1975, yet are not in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.
Believe it or not, this song was one of the top wedding dance songs back in the day! You put this song on and all the people just ran to the dancefloor. The chorus is simple enough where all the drunk people just lifted their glasses up and belted out "Joooooooooy to the world"... hahaha, your mom-in-law has great taste.
I went to one of their concerts in 1970 in San Diego and was surprised by how they excited the audience!! By the end of the concert there were literally hundreds of people dancing in front of the stage!!
Joy to the world The Lord has come Let earth receive her king Christmas song. Joy to the world All the boys and girls Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea Three Dog Night secular song.

Mom in law has great taste in music 😊 People make fun of the guy that shows up to the campfire with a guitar. We have big family and friends camping trips and this is one of our favorites. We don’t sound like these guys but we have fun. 😂❤
I think this was originally to be "Jeremiah was a preacher". The band rejected it at least twice. So the story goes, it was presented a 3rd time, substituting "bull frog" for preacher, and they were just drunk enough to dig it. Now it's pure happiness and fun! So glad 3rd time was a charm.
You go, mom-in-law! 3DN was one of the best bands EVER!! They had 3 top rate vocalists and a great band with the most interesting bass lines I've ever heard. ("One" has been my benchmark for testing all new audio gear since 1968!)
One of my all-time fave groups! Saw them in concert waaaaay back in the 70s, with Aerosmith as the opening act😮 You have 3 lead singers with their own vibe! Check out "Black & White", "One", or "Never Been to Spain". So many hits❤

Love it girl, this one definitely has you trippin. These guys were great. RIP Cory. Had the extreme pleasure of roadying for them back in the day. Nicest most laid back guys I've ever hung out with. Named my son Jeremiah and took him to see one of their concerts when he was 4. When he heard them sing his name he went crazy. As for the line in the song, Hoyt Axton, the songwriter, said it was just a filler lyric to hold the rhythm of the song but before he could change it Three Dog Night recorded it into a huge hit and the lyric stuck.
The name of the band, Three Dog Night, comes from an Australian term. On cold nights they would allow their dogs to sleep with them for warmth. A three dog night was a really cold night
The guy who played the dad in the movie Gremlins wrote this song. But, it was a slow song. And when they asked if they could do it, he said, of course. But they sped it up and made it a hit.
Back in the 70's, 80's and 90's you heard this at every wedding reception. Though most people thought the songs name was Jeremiah was a bull frog. Saw these guys back in the day and they were great. Not too many bands featured 3 vocalists.
Love t his song! The name of the group "Three Dog Night" refers to to peaple of the north. On cold nights they sleep with their sled dogs. The colder it gets the more dogs they need. A 3 dog night is really cold !
"According to the band’s official website, the name Three Dog Night comes from a phrase often used by Aboriginal Australian hunters as a barometer for how cold a night in the Outback would be. The hunters would dig a hole in the ground and then use dingos to keep warm. If it was cold they’d sleep with two dogs. If it was freezing it would be a “three-dog night.” They wanted to include the number three somewhere in their moniker as a representation of the idea that there are three lead singers."
No matter how hot the day, the outback can be freezing at night. Cloud cover can stop the earth from warming up, though clouds can take years to come in a 7-year or longer drought. Drought also causes extreme destructive wild-fires, so warmth in a drought would be better not depending on fire. Dingoes however are wild dogs, not to be trusted around kids. That said, there are always dogs of all sizes around original aussie towns, and animals know how to survive.
Good morning Britt you need to listen to more three dog night songs, " one ".....mama told me not to come...." Black & White is another great song. Btw you are so damn cute ⚘️
Also this song framed a classic movie about my generation, The Big Chill. Ya'll remember that movie, dontcha!!!Such an iconic song from such an iconic group. BTW, joy to the world!
I think beginning lyrics just came out of songwriter through sheer imagination & emotion. A spontaneous feeling! Yet it fits & makes sense, the minute you hear it.
Get them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame RIGHT NOW! Saw them in Indianapolis in August of 1969 and then again in August of 1971.....2 of the best concerts I have EVER seen! They deserve to be in the Hall of Fame WITHOUT QUESTION❗
Excerpts from the song has been taken over the years and inserted into different commercials and even in TV shows and movies. I remember an episode of the X-Files where a wounded Mulder asked Sculley to sing him a song while they waited in a forest and the song, she chose was this one. I'm 66 and still sing this song, of course to myself, while driving or doing chores. It's an uplifting song.
Tell MIL she picked a good one! I love watching these when you enjoy the music this much. You love the clothes, the voice, all of it, and all your weird memory interruptions are just perfect. As you say, “Chef’s Kiss”. 😊
Britt, I have never heard anyone so desperately try to read meanings into a song. It's not calling someone a bullfrog, and it's not a Christmas song. Just listen and enjoy. 🤣Three Dog Night had three lead singers: Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. The powerhouse lead voice in this one belongs to Mr. Negron.
Brit, what a cute reaction! I was in a band in the 60's and 70's. We had so many requests for this song, that we had to learn it. I played piano in the group. It wasn't my favorite 3 Dog Night song, but the audience loved it. By the way Brit, you should listen to their many hits. I saw them live and they were great. Like the Pink Floyd shirt-- saw them live with surround--sound.OMG! Your reactions are priceless. Have a great rest of your day!!😊😊
This may not have been the best song for you to get introduced to Three Dog Night as it does have some pretty strange lyrics. Please don't give up on them as they really are a great group. To give you a better idea of WHY they were so popular, you really need to listen to Black And White. From there, you can try Momma Told Me Not To Come, Shambala, One, Never Been To Spain and then The Show Must Go On needs in there somewhere as well. But please... listen to Black And White? You will be amazed
I was in high school in the mid 70’s. I’ll never forget riding home from a wrestling meet and this song came on the bus radio. Some of us didn’t do well, others were great. One of the best, Bobby Turner started singing along and dancing in the ails. He got everyone singing with him. What a great ride home. Bobby died a few years ago from a lingering illness, but when this song comes on I think of a young man that brought joy to many.
I've seen Bob 4 times Once at the Miami Baseball Stadium, it was pouring down rain, but if Bob was going to sing in the rain we were gonna listen...SO GREAT... STILL HAVE THE TICKET STUB ❤
I think it’s true in any era of music that you can find songs where the lyrics only have to rhyme, they don’t have to make sense, lol. But this song is so much fun it doesn’t matter!
Jeremiah was a French man; was a good friend of mine. I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him a-drink his wine . We always had a mighty fine time.
Many comtemporary churches back in the 70's did take the chorus to that song and changed the words so the song could be sung in church services. 40+ years later, some Church Sundy School's will still sing the chorus with the little kids. Cat Steven's song "Morning has Broken" is another song that churches included in their contempory worship services. So, you are right. :)
This was always just a nonsense song that was so fun to sing along to. Jeremiah was, as far as we knew, just a bullfrog. This would come on the radio in the car and we would belt it out. You should have heard me at six years old shouting out "You KNOW i love the LAYDEES... " hahaha
I still remenber I this song playing while I was leaving Vietnam on a C-131 back home...will never forget the faces of all those vietnamese mums and their little children hoping someone would hop them on one our flights back home.
The original lyric for Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" was "Jeremiah was a prophet". However, the lyric was changed because it was a placeholder when songwriter Hoyt Axton wrote the song for an animated show. Axton didn't have time to change the lyric before presenting the song to the band while touring with them
Joy to the World -same title, two different songs! Do not question the bullfrog, just sang along! Their whole catalog is so diverse, not sure if they ever wrote any of their own songs but they totally took over the arrangements and they all sang. One of my very faves!!
Just saw these guys a couple months of ago and two years ago. They are in their mid to higher seventies. That doesn't matter they can were great as always
The original words to this song written by Hoyt Axton was "Jerimiah was a Prophet" (which makes since with the rest of the words). Chuck Negron didn't think that would sell records so we change the word Prophet to Bullfrog! The whole thing makes no since but it sold a lot of records! It was a big time hit!
Mom in law knows her tunes! 🤸♀️🕺🏻💃😂
My thoughts exactly
Oh, Three Dog Night ALWAYS took us to church! “Shambala”, “Never Been to Spain”, “One”, “Black and White”, “Mama Told Me Not to Come”…
All amazing tunes!
Love Shambala. Never has been another tune like it.
All 🔥🔥🔥
And don't forget "Try A Little Tenderness".
I remember my first time hearing Celebrate and Eli's Coming.
Chuck, Cory, and Danny were all first-class lead singers and very underrated

Drought also causes extreme destructive wild-fires, so warmth in a drought would be better not depending on fire. Dingoes however are wild dogs, not to be trusted around kids. That said, there are always dogs of all sizes around original aussie towns, and animals know how to survive.
This was a big hit for us older folks! ❤
Love your reaction to this group!
Three Dog Night is a deep rabbit hole. So much good stuff.
Good morning Britt you need to listen to more three dog night songs, " one ".....mama told me not to come...." Black & White is another great song.
Btw you are so damn cute ⚘️
Mama told me NOT to Come...is so much fun! DO IT!
rockin the pink floyd shirt awesome
Thank you again! Charming and fun! There is an unmistakable Gospel feel to their music. That's why it has the punch that it does and doesn't get old.
I don't know what this young lady is talking about but God knows she is gorgeous and entertaining
When these guys put on a show . . . THEY PUT ON A SHOW! An Old Fashioned Love Song, live, is hilarious!
One of the best Things about TDN was that they ALWAYS seem to be having fun - always!
There was a lot of friction in the band, read Chuck's book Three Dog Nightmare.
@@mikemaricle9941 sadly this seems to happen to a lot of the great bands.
Also this song framed a classic movie about my generation, The Big Chill. Ya'll remember that movie, dontcha!!!Such an iconic song from such an iconic group. BTW, joy to the world!
Greetings from Barbados! There is a Christmas song called Joy to the World. The second line is " The Lord is nigh"
Joy to the world , the Lord is come
I think beginning lyrics just came out of songwriter through sheer imagination & emotion.
ABSOLUTELY! If they aren't hall of fame, then there's no reason to have one!
There is a Christmas song "Joy to the World," but this is a different song by the same name.
Love the song, always have. Brings back great memories from the 70s. Great reaction, Brit.
A bullfrog is just a bullfrog and it has some good wine.
Tell MIL she picked a good one! I love watching these when you enjoy the music this much. You love the clothes, the voice, all of it, and all your weird memory interruptions are just perfect. As you say, “Chef’s Kiss”. 😊
Two entirely different songs Britt, but both are great songs.
Listening to the songs of my youth reminds me of the great music we had back then. Music stopped when disco came out!
Negron.
Don't be snarky
3 things that are sure in life .Death, taxes and this girl here pausing a song about 4 to 6 times before its over. 😅
Yes !!!! 💖 Three Dog Night, especially Black and White. Very influential to my generation 🥰❤️🥰
@@juliewhite7469 INFLUENTIAL? It's practically our ANTHEM! 😅🤣😂
@@TonyM1961 ❤️💃❤️💃❤️
I was in high school in the mid 70’s. I’ll never forget riding home from a wrestling meet and this song came on the bus radio. Some of us didn’t do well, others were great. One of the best, Bobby Turner started singing along and dancing in the ails. He got everyone singing with him. What a great ride home.
Bobby died a few years ago from a lingering illness, but when this song comes on I think of a young man that brought joy to many.
We sang this in junior high choir. We did a medley of 70s hits. It was really fun! I’ve always loved this song! 🥰
I've seen Bob 4 times
Once at the Miami Baseball Stadium, it was pouring down rain, but if Bob was going to sing in the rain we were gonna listen...SO GREAT...
STILL HAVE THE TICKET STUB ❤
One of my first 45 records I had I was 9 years old . I love the Three Dog night thanks to you and mother in law for the reaction.
The song was for fun and entertainment, didn't ever make sense to anyone, but we ALWAYS enjoyed singing it, lmao!
Young lady, your mother in law and I understand this song. You're a breath of fresh air and remind me of one of my daughters.
I think it’s true in any era of music that you can find songs where the lyrics only have to rhyme, they don’t have to make sense, lol. But this song is so much fun it doesn’t matter!
My Husband first dog was named Jeremiah after this song, late 1970’s, it’s a favorite
Jeremiah was a French man; was a good friend of mine. I never understood a single word he said, but I helped him a-drink his wine . We always had a mighty fine time.
You could not escape hearing this song in 1971. It was impossible.
This reaction was soo much fun to watch/hear, mom-in-law has great taste! 🤘😆
This was a fun song they did not expecting much and it became a most popular tune. No Christmas connection.
Another having fun reaction 😊 Great suggestion from mother in law 👍 another good oldie. Keep smiling and God Bless.
The lead singer Chuck Negron performs solo now. He has an amazing story of drugs, homelessness, redemption and love of God and family. An amazing man.
You're absolutely delightful.. You often make my day. Thank you.
" hahaha
When this came out we called it the bullfrog song and I still think of it that way.
Fall 1968, they were the band we had play at our HS Homecoming Dance. And a great time was had by all.
Just saw these guys a couple months of ago and two years ago. They are in their mid to higher seventies. That doesn't matter they can were great as always
In your words “they sampled the Christmas song”. It really is two different songs…we love you!
This is such an amazing group. My second favorite group in the whole world!😅
They are so much fun to watch!
These guys were great singers and we loved singing their songs back in the 1970s.
The original lyric was prophet, but it was deemed too controversial for radio, so it was changed to bullfrog in a nose thumbing move.
