This song is timeless, but at the time a lot of young men were leaving on a jet plane to Vietnam. It wasn't specifically about the Vietnam War, but the war made it especially poignant.
John wrote the song and it became a hit for Peter, Paul and Mary. Ma Cass was part of the Mamas and Papas another famous vocal folk group from the time.
John was one of few musicians who not only sounded like their studio recordings, but actually sounded better live!! He was one of a kind and it makes me sad thinking about all of the brilliant music we've been cheated out of ever since he died.
When I was a kid, I was fortunate enough to have met John Denver. He was a friend of my aunt and one year spent Christmas with my family at my grandparents' farm. Mind you this was before he was widely known, but he did play a song for us. ❤🙏
John was very young when he wrote this. Like early 20s. He was sitting in an airport and feeling bad about being away. So he did what songwriters do. He poured his emotion into a song. John had such a gift for doing that and sometimes very quickly. He said in an interview once that he was taking one last ski run for the day and was thinking about his wife. He wrote Annie's Song on the lift ride up the mountain. He got off the lift desperately looking for something to write with. Another great talent we lost to a plane crash.
@@markthompson8656 If I remember right ther was a minor problem with his small aeroplane that was not taken care of that was the cause of the accident.
John Denver wrote and recorded “Leaving on a Jet Plane” in 1966, when he was just 23 years old. It was included on his debut demo recording as “Babe, I Hate to Go.” He made copies and gave them to friends as Christmas presents that year.May 19, 2022
John wrote this, he was a legend, yet he was always mocked and never embraced by the country music community. His death was so unexpected and tragic in a very sad way. I can remember his music from all through the 70's.
18 year olds had just recently gotten the vote, when this show was recorded. That was a big part of what they were talking about to their younger fans age 18, 19, and 20 as well as those 21 and older.
I thought it was very interesting that right after she commented that people are saying the same thing today that they were in the 70s, Cass says “it’s not important who you vote for, vote for who you believe in.” You will never hear someone say that today. Nowadays, celebrities make a point of telling people who to vote for, and how you’re a terrible person if you don’t.
I was in elementary school in the 70's. One of the music teachers played an acoustic guitar. I remember one day she brought us outside and we sat in the grass and sang this song in the shade under a big oak tree in front of the school.
John Denver wrote this song in 1966 but called it, 'Babe, I hate to go.' He was just 23 and gave copies of the record to friends for Christmas that year. It was later recorded by the group Peter Paul and Mary in 1969 becoming a huge hit for them and the best known version of the song.
I grew up hearing my folks say “fine and dandy, sweet as candy”! Also grew up loving John Denver, it was so sad when he died, a beautiful light went out.
Cass’s joke reminds me of the duet Lulu did with her ex-husband Maurice (BeeGees). She asked him if he had studied the lyrics of First of May (which of course was written by the Gibbs)…he and the audience laughed because they knew…just like in this case.❤
You just need to think of this version of Johns song as a wave, the chorus with Cass Elliot just washes your day away replacing it with peace, beauty and love. Like you're on a beach at sunset with the waves at your feet, nothing else matters but you and that moment. The world just stops to let you catch your breath. It's just a perfect rendition of an already amazing song, and I'm glad the internet preserves it forever 🖖😎
Cass was joking when she claimed that she wrote this song. It was in fact written by John. It was one of his first compositions from the mid-1960s and it became a huge Number 1 hit for the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary.
First time hearing John Denver?? You have to go down this rabbit hole!! “Sunshine on my shoulder” and “Rocky mountain High” are just a couple great ones he’s done
Ahhh... "Midnight Special". The first late night concert oriented series in the early 70's to early 80's. All varieties of music was booked. John Denver has become more popular after being somewhat forgotten after his death 1997. He also appeared in several films.
John Denver was one of the most popular and beloved performers of the '70s. He wrote this. Cass was considered one of the greatest voices of her times. Imagine growing up with a new song like this every day.
Not sure if you have reacted yet to any songs by The Mamas and the Papas. Cass was one of the members, and probably the reason they were a big deal. Sadly she passed way too young. This was my youth, I think we just took John Denver's pure voice for granted, and really didn't appreciate what we had.
John Denver is a deep dive you should take. Rocky Mountain High, Take Me Home Country Roads, and a song he wrote in his head in 10 minutes while skiing, Annie's Song, written for his wife. Perhaps the most beautiful love song ever written. Right up there with Something, by George Harrison.
John Henry Deutschendorf Jr. (Denver) grew up a military brat as did I. His Dad was a decorated Air Force pilot who moved a lot for his career and spent much time away from his family - saying "goodbye" is ingrained in our lives. I was eight or nine when I first heard the Peter Paul and Mary version of John's song (about the time my Dad came home from serving in the Army in South Vietnam). It always touches my heart when I hear it performed and never more so than listening to this sublime version with Cass Elliot. Thanks for posting your sweet reaction.
This is is a really beautiful song. The Mamas and Papas also did the song. Their harmonies are fantastic. My favorite John Denver song is called "Follow Me". A beautiful song he wrote to his wife.
I love John Denver! The 1st concert I ever saw as a teenager was John Denver. It was before he broke big & it was just John & his bass player on stage. They played for 2 solid hours. It was amazing & totally captivating. I loved his crystal clear voice the 1st second I heard it!

Britt, it's nice to see another generation discover John's music. I was in HS in 1972 and very into folk music when he burst onto the scene as a singer / songwriter with this song which was made popular with Peter, Paul & Mary. John Denver was an 'old soul' who created such beautiful music that often focused on love and nature. He didn't need a big band or lots of backup singers...just his guitar. I saw him in concert in the early 80s and he had a small ~10 piece orchestra on stage for the first couple of songs, then he dismissed them and brought a bar stool on stage, and he sat there for the next 2 hours playing with nothing but his guitar. I bought all of his albums as soon as they were released for years until he passed in 1997. // If you are interested in listening to a nice selection of his greatest hits, try his 'Wildlife Concert' that was recorded in front of a live audience in 1995. I love my mum. I remember her singing this along with John on the radio when I was a kid. Ma Cass singing along is like she was in our kithchen with us.

Mama Cass is SO underrated, both as a vocal artist and human being, but also as virtually the sustaining catalyst for a dozen Laurel Canyon artists. The whole musical scene revolved around her house.
She had a voice like no other‐- I loved it. She had a very successful career apart from The Mamas and the Papas too. I especially identified with her song "Make Your Own Kind of Music". She didn't really fit the Sixties' "mold" of blonde, blue-eyed and skinny, so she (like Janis Joplin) relied on her talent, personality and uniqueness. I loved John Denver as a brilliant musician, songwriter and singer first but I'm gonna have to say that I loved him in the movie "Oh God". He had a great personality and was just a genuine, sweet man. RIP to the great John Denver!!!

Cass Eliott died in 1974, heart failure, age 32. John Denver died in 1997, piloting a light plane he'd recently acquired. According to one theory, the cockpit arrangement was such that from his seat he couldn't easily reach the switch to cut over from one gas tank to the other.

Great reaction. Britt!! I really wish they did a whole album together. They compliment each other perfectly. So perfectly that, like you said, it seemed like it was one voice singing..until she went higher! Cass and John had a similar sense humor and you can tell really respected each other immensely!! I loved her little mistake, if you caught it, when she first sings...she had to hesitate and to figure the lyric!! So real :) I also loved how when John said for everyone to join in and sing along, not one person did, because they wanted to hear THEM!!! :)
One of the reason there are not many great singers with deep voices is that it takes more air flow to sing in a deep voice.. and caren carpenter never seemed to run out of air… she sang effortlessly
Back in the 70s they had several variety shows. Where you had a lot of live music. Several artists had them including John Denver. My sister were teens at the time and they were in love with this guy 😂
I was in HS in the 70’s. His songs always make me think of those innocent days. Almost strange to hear people who weren’t alive then finding these songs now.
I so love the chime of that beautiful Guild 12 string guitar. John played so many beautuful songs on it. Between him and Roger McGuinn from the Byrds i fell in love with 12 string guitars.
I remember this song from when I was little. My sister would play this on her guitar and we would sing it together. We did a few other John Denver songs too. I idolized my sister, I was 5 and she was 17.
You mentioned that it was 50 years ago, and said that's crazy! Yikes, I remember watching this when I was a sophomore in h.s. Peter Paul and Mary, who I saw in college, made this a hit. It all seems like yesterday, you'll see someday lol. 😊 Peace from Northern Michigan.

You should do a reaction with her good friend the Late Janis Joplin,Live at Monteray Ca.1967, Ball And Chain Song you can see Cass Elliot in the audience .Keep up the great videos you do.
Someone probably already mentioned it, but I actually loved that they incorporated this song into Armageddon (the movie) with the actual actors singing. The first time watching that was pretty cool because JD and his music had been out of the spotlight for decades. I think I still have a John Denver vinyl. Peace, Love!!
This is my favorite John Denver song. We used to sing it all the time in choir. They both were so talented. “ California dreamin” by the mamas and the papas is great.( cass elliot is in)

John was a very experienced pilot. It was a shock when he died in a plane crash. Cass was only 32 when she died and left behind a daughter who was in kindergarten.
She did not write this song, he wrote it she was making a joke.

Peter, Paul and Mary made it famous and did it incredibly well!John made it big after that performing his own music, and is sorely missed.

John and Cass were my childhood ❤
You mentioned that it was 50 years ago, and said that's crazy! Yikes, I remember watching this when I was a sophomore in h.s. Peter Paul and Mary, who I saw in college, made this a hit. It all seems like yesterday, you'll see someday lol. 😊 Peace from Northern Michigan.
I've heard her sing this solo and was great.
I remember seeing this on TV late on Sat.night,Cass was one of the best singers, it was such a shock when she died back in 74.
“ California dreamin” by the mamas and the papas is great.( cass elliot is in)
Two great artists, Taken to soon. This song is haunting to me as I can remember seeing him taking off that day in October. It brought chills to me when I later herd the news. R.I.P.
John was a very experienced pilot. It was a shock when he died in a plane crash. Cass was only 32 when she died and left behind a daughter who was in kindergarten.
