Another archaic principle, the Limitation of Liability Act of 1851(The petition leans on the Limitation of Liability Act of 1851 (LOLA), which allows the shipowner to restrict the total amount of their liability to no more than the post-accident value of the vessel, plus the value of pending freight), could come into play when deciding who is responsible for paying what sort of compensation for the Baltimore incident

It'd be fine to introduce a congestion tax if the alternatives weren't such trash. I think a big part of people being unhappy with it is because of the notoriously awful transit options in NYC (subways are terrible, for instance). Fix the alternatives before tossing out a tax. And I can completely understand how it's a cash grab when the city is making money both ways now, regardless of how you travel in the city. More reason for people to move because it's not worth the premium to live in NYC.

In order to open a McDonald's franchise, one must have $500k in liquid assets and pay a $45k franchising fee. It can cost upwards of $2 million (maybe more in CA) to open one restaurant. Average profits after expenses are between $1-150k. Multiply that by 21. That family business is easily making that woman $2-3 Million annually. She's not hurting and I quit eating at McDonald's a long, long time ago.

Gadi is so cute. But as for congestion pricing: it is a gigantic money grab. For seniors and the disabled who need to go back & forth to doctors and clinics just outside their immediate area, they now would have to pay extra. One woman I know lives in NJ, works in the Bronx but has to drop off her husband in a wheelchair and pick him up from his office in midtown every day - so how are they supposed to pay an additional $30/day just to get to/from work?
Another woman I know is undergoing daily cancer radiation treatments at Memorial Sloane Kettering and is unsteady on her feet, requiring her friend to drive her back and forth from midtown. Now, suddenly she's supposed to spend $50 in cabs every day, or cause her friend to have to spend $15 daily to drive her own car to help her ailing friend. This is NUTS.
The very people who already LIVE here and who have paid taxes and rents to live HERE should not be the ones penalized by a new law. It is absolutely a money grab against seniors, the disabled and middle class folks who already are scraping by.

I think charging to get into a city is a great idea as long as you can register as a working member of the city (not lawyers or rich people of any kind) and you get an exception from the fees entirely. You can't charge someone who has to report to a business or municipal entity either, say a traffic ticket or something of that nature. But it would be reasonable if you were hitting the town to sight see, etc. I could see this working in Chicago very well if the exemptions would work for students, medical patients, the poor, etc. It would be tricky but a great revenue source for the cities. Assuming they use that money for infrastructure and not line anyone's pockets in any way shape or form.
