    Just a question, would CCTV or security footage be counted as a primary source if it captured a certain event or?

    • @elj955
      @elj955 3 роки тому +4

      Yes because primary sources are created at the time of the event. Therefore, a video camera capturing the event would be considered a primary source

    • @lightgivener
      @lightgivener 3 роки тому +1

      As WildAzure said primary source. However don't forget that the camera also shows a perspective, not direct "truth". The camera has an angle and frame and cannot show the complete picture. Having only partial information can sometimes lead to misinterpretation. Just like an eyewitness the camera can only show aspects which are filtered through the medium of the film.

    but what about meaning questions vs context questions. what do i include from IOP CAM in each?

    • @HistorySkills
      @HistorySkills  8 місяців тому

      Excellent question. We actually have separate videos on explicit and implict meaning, as well as historical context, which give more detailed instructions on each one. You can also find the different question types here: www.historyskills.com/source-criticism/analysis/
      I hope that helps.

    Is there a way to analyze the context of a secondary resourse? Should I talk bout the time when the secondary resource is created or the time period that the resource talked about?

    • @lightgivener
      @lightgivener 3 роки тому +4

      You should definitely evaluate the authors background and the context and purpose of the secondary source. It's like looking at a photograph: you want to consider the events shown but also have to consider how the camera was angled and by whom.

    Is the value of a historical source tied to the purpose of which it is being used. Can a biased and unhistorical report of an event, be used as a valid source when examining the perception of that event. For an example, lets say im writing a paper on the the perception of and reactions to the russian revolution in america. Can i use a biased book about the russian revolution written by an american, as a source, even though the book is bad and represents the event in a biased way. Is the validity of a historical source context dependent. Or is it not history anymore if i study the reactions and perceptions to events and not the event itself?

    • @HistorySkills
      @HistorySkills  Рік тому

      Great questions, Laiva. A source can still be useful for your historical research, even if it is considered unreliable due to bias. Even heavily biased sources can provide helpful information. Often, it is worth corroborating information from a biased source in order to use it. Have a look at some of the examples and explanations on 'evaluating sources' below to help you out further: www.historyskills.com/source-criticism/evaluation/

    'all historical sources were made for a reason' - unintentional sources are a huge part of history - especially for understanding people who did not leave written records. This video seems to forget that sources do not just have to be written.

      Totally agree, I was just trying the IOPCAM on an artifact with unknown origins however I had a hard time performing a "historical analysis" since it involved a theoretical approach with the said artifact not having a tangible/exact creator or maker.

    • @HistorySkills
      @HistorySkills  8 місяців тому

      Good question. What country/state are you studying in? Each region has their own rules for how to do this. If you're meant to state the central claim of the source, it would fall under the 'I' (Information) part of the analsyis. I hope that helps.
