Not gonna lie, visual novels are actually really easy to fuck up. They cant rely on gameplay so it is like 70% writting 20%art and 10%gameplays. So if you mess up the writting your game is fucked way harder then a normal game would be because there is very little to fall back on.
There's currently a fan project called "Class of 09: The reality check" that's remaking the flipside the way the fans wanted it, some voice actors from the original game accepted to be in it and i hope it heals the reputation damage that the flipside inflicted onto the CO09 saga.

Ironically, both the creators of Class of 09 and Joker got mad that the "wrong people" related to their characters, and then made sequels to try and "own" the audience. And in both cases, it's better to just pretend the follow-ups aren't canon (not including The Re-up).
So basically: The guy made two games where every single male is a pervert, a scumbag, an incel, a pedo, or any combination of the four, then put up a bunch of female characters that don't take any crap from them, and then got shocked when a bunch of lesbians got attached to it. THEN he came up with a poorly thought-out plan to drive them away, which backfired in spectacular fashion because apparently he didn't know that lesbians can also be some of the most spiteful people ever, and the amount of fanart involving the female leads making out just increased tenfold because they now know that it upsets him enough to resort to that stuff. Masterful gambit, sir.
Its nice to see that young women finally have their own walter white style of "wait you werent supposed to like them" character and that is all an accident on the creators end.
Not really, because the female characters weren't much better as people, except for a couple of secondary ones... The main protagonists, Nicole and Jecka, were asshols and the last entry made sure you remember that.

@@EmaSkyeRealForensicScientist I've always been fascinated in the book and from my knowledge it's written from the perspective of an unreliable narrator who the reader isn't supposed to agree with. All the stuff he does to win over the young girl is portrayed as wrong, having issues with the writer is fine, but I'm not sure it was meant to be that. If it is I'm not shocked, but it's a book about discussing a creep being a creep and losing in the end.

There is absolutely no way the writing in the first two games was an accident. There are no ghost writers either. Flipside was specifically written to spite and scare away the unintended fanbase of queer girls shipping the characters. It also got rushed really hard. The writing in Reup took him 13 months. Flipside took him somewhere about 4 months, and that's counting the period when he decided to sabotage it all. I really hope that Class of 09 gets a second chance with the anime, but with SBN3 in charge, no one can know for sure.
Why would he sabotage his new relatively big fan base just because? He could've made more money with more eyes on the project and not thrown '09 down the drain. I guess this man just really hates zoomers
Apparently SBN3 also got bored with the game's concept partway through its development, which contributed to how short and half-cooked it ended up being.
I played this game with a friend. We went in with the objective of find the route thats gets Jecka to collage. By the end we were drinking several cans of booze just to get through it.
I'm a fan of visual novels, especially with an anime artsyle, and the whole tale of this game with its dark themes, it's flaws, and its fanbase, feels like a fever dream in it of itself.
It baffles me how Flipside re-contextualizes the entire series, but not in the way that a standard plot twist in a movie would. Prior to Flipside, the consensus was that Class of '09 was a dark, fucked up game, but had insightful commentary on real world struggles and events, while we watch the story through the eyes of a sociopathic protagonist who is VERY CLEARLY wrong about most of what she's saying, but you can see how a dumb teenager might see the world as she does. Now we know that all of that really strong writing and storytelling was a complete and utter accident, since SBN actually believes all the stupid shit he wrote about. People naturally assumed the game was well-written because the reality of the situation was so crazy and fucked up, it could only happen in a world like Class of '09.
I'm reminded of how a mutual of mine states Borderlands 3 manages to be bad enough to retroactively make the previous Borderlands entries worse by its existence. Though I've never touched the series so I have no clue about the validity of his statement.
Ever since I heard how messed up the creator was, I always couldn’t shake the feeling that the “depth” and “social commentary” was all accidental and it never was “that deep.” I held onto the hope that it wasn’t an accident, and the game was supposed to be “deep” and “social commentary”, but the flip side ruined it all.
I feel like that sums up how I feel about the game too. Like before flipside, I saw Nicole as sort of a Bojack horseman type character where you know that they are horrible person but there is a chance that they can get better and you hope that they do but it seem like the creator wanted you to idolize Nicole like he does

@@InfinitySevens I played Borderlands 1, 2, and 3. The gameplay of 2 is still solid, regardless of how bad 3 was. But in terms of the storyline, BL 3 does indeed make you not care about almost anybody you might have liked in BL 1 or 2.

To give the latter credit, there's a puzzle before that part and you have to solve it incorrectly on purpose to get the incest ending, so at least there was SOME level of self-awareness.

Most VNs don't fall into the category of 'dating sim', since VNs tend not to have any simulation elements at all. A romance VN and a dating sim are not the same.

He goes on to say that people want happy games because they have a comfortable life and don't understand that it's "crazy f*ed up st" that's happened. He brings up the people from the suburbs vs people from the urban environment reacting to a fight analogy to explain that those who haven't experienced that game would not like it. He even says that Coach Colby rhymes with the name of the teacher at his high school who got suspended for "unsavory actions." - (Paraphrase and quotes) I found this quotes from a Reddit thread that just summarizes quotes from SBN3 after the release of the game. I kinda understand what you mean by the creator being resentful of the fandom. I actually hate how things are in fandom culture nowadays (im gen z too btw). You're not allowed to be dark, or edgy, even the cringe edgy, everyone has to be likeable or at least a good person. Everyone has to be queer (i say this as a rampant bl reader), everyone has to enjoy things MORALLY. Fandom drama always revolves around the ethics of the thing you like so i relate to the creator from a fan's POV. Getting attention for a minute detail of a game that is actually subversive (in a way i think) to the game's main themes is annoying. It's like, are you really a fan of class of 09? It's kinda like the clone high series all over again. People take the wrong parts too seriously and they miss the point of the original show.

Flip Side didn’t bother me too much, everything that was in it honestly felt like it was SUPPOSED to be funny but like nobody moved- this game was supposed to be serious which I understand, but I would’ve preferred a game about Jeckas “struggle of being pretty” or even oh idk her home situation with BOTH parents and her grandma Jecka could’ve maybe stayed with her grandmother as she is the only person that we haven’t seen her hint at being abusive- staying with her grandma could’ve been her happy ending
On some level, yes. But you can also make something immensely fucked up or strange, while still being normal in your everyday life. Junji Ito is a big example of that.
Personally, I believed the first two games were meant to be satire since it had a lot of dark humor, which isn't something I really enjoy, but it called out a lot of creeps and made the weirdos out to be exactly what they are. I heard it had a lot of inspiration from people and their terrible high-school experiences (while being over exaggerated for comedy), and it made me feel better since it reminded me of my own school experience. While I didn't like everything about it, this game was a comfort of mine. Finding a sense of community in the misery I felt while also having the characters call out at Nicole when she went too far. It's sad, looking back on it now, that it never saw the creeps and terrible things they were making fun of as wrong, considering the creator is one and has done so many awful things. In hindsight, we should've seen this coming. I guess in different ways we were all tricked, or maybe it was just me.

Ngl, when I first heard about what happened with the Flipside, I felt catharsis. I never liked Co09, never liked the look of it, the setting, the characters, none of it. So learning that I was right in my hunch, that the games were all shit and an excuse for the author to flex their high school power fantasy felt so good. But learning why people liked them in the first place from this video really sours that. I still don't like the games, the justification has been cast. But the fans saw something in those characters, believed in these games. It's one thing for a sequel to be disappointing, outright bad in some cases. Flipside doesn't even show on the leaderboard in that regard. But man, I feel for the fans, who now know that the things they liked, the deeper elements and themes, were accidental, and that the creator saw them less as earnest fanartists, writers or just people who liked the games, and more as fleas to be shaken off, even if that meant burning their series to the ground.

she’s much better as a deuteragonist who is the one person nicole cares about; i personally am a male-leaning bi(gay? idk I’m going through a crisis) man with a lot of female friends, and a lot of them like have one ride-or-die (friend?? they’re a bit too close for that atp) amongst everyone else; but of course not, SBN3 had to pull this and reverse the beautiful writing of the game he didn’t even intentionally make. Something i like is how the women are more well written than the men; jecka’s summary is that she’s a girl who doesn’t know what she wants in life, moving around as she goes; nicole’s is a sociopath who learnt from her multiple events in each school she’s been to, etc… but sbn3 somehow mischaracterused his own characters. It’s a massive waste of potential.

Drawn characters on top of photographed backgrounds used to be the norm back in the day for small doujinshi developers before it became more worth it to draw them themselves.
It was a spiritual precursor to the Joker Folie à Deux. The feet side needed more endings amd choices and less feet. For me it felt lazy and watching the creator uncreatively trash on a section of the fan base that I'm not a part of.
My biggest issue with co09 rn is people being like "NICOLE WOULDN'T DO THAT" yes she would. Yall glazed her so hard yall forgot she caused a school yk, she let a girl off herself in front of the class to prove a point about poetry and same story different ending she rewrites a racist book or whatever to get her teacher fired not because the teacher was a racist but just because she didn't like the teacher. She was also just completely fine with offing her mom. So with all of those points it makes complete sense she would be so mad at jecka that she would get with her father and put her toes in his mouth just to piss her off.
I really don't see too many people arguing that nicole wouldn't betray jecka, it's the reason she did that many people are saying is inconsistent with her previous actions. Jecka literally didn't give a shit when nicole lost her house and nicole STILL didn't actively try to get back at her, and there are many other smaller scale instances of that as well. What many people are saying is that the stakes needed to be fair bigger to justify the action. Even socipathic terrible characters need consistent characterization, or else the audience is thrown for a loophole and it's considered a clash in expectations, which is a bad thing.

I watched Doaenel's (a league of legends streamer/content creator) videos and streams of him playing this, and at first he had really enjoyed the first two games, but when he played the third, he had really disliked the lack of interaction in the game that was present in the first two games. I completely agreed with his point of view. After finding about the trafficking ending, I am almost horrified with how the series has gone, the feet stuff weren't much of a problem from an outside view because it's generally not that nasty compared to literal human trafficking. It went from an interactive visual novel with engaging stories and endings to a thing where you just endure, trying to hope that you will reach a satisfying ending, but in the end you almost just feel depressed. Not satisfied, not wanting to carry on further with other endings, just wondering where the spark of the previous games went. This game will still be one of my favourite simplistic new-gen games when I just ignore the third game, but it will always be in the back of my mind. SBN3 practically ruined a potential visual novel masterpiece due to unnecessary hate and grudges towards a specific audience. I genuinely hope the anime doesn't include the third installment.

All the stuff he does to win over the young girl is portrayed as wrong, having issues with the writer is fine, but I'm not sure it was meant to be that. If it is I'm not shocked, but it's a book about discussing a creep being a creep and losing in the end.

There is absolutely no way the writing in the first two games was an accident. There are no ghost writers either.
Flipside was specifically written to spite and scare away the unintended fanbase of queer girls shipping the characters.
It also got rushed really hard. The writing in Reup took him 13 months. Flipside took him somewhere about 4 months, and that's counting the period when he decided to sabotage it all.
I really hope that Class of 09 gets a second chance with the anime, but with SBN3 in charge, no one can know for sure.

It baffles me how Flipside re-contextualizes the entire series, but not in the way that a standard plot twist in a movie would.
Prior to Flipside, the consensus was that Class of '09 was a dark, fucked up game, but had insightful commentary on real world struggles and events, while we watch the story through the eyes of a sociopathic protagonist who is VERY CLEARLY wrong about most of what she's saying, but you can see how a dumb teenager might see the world as she does.
Now we know that all of that really strong writing and storytelling was a complete and utter accident, since SBN actually believes all the stupid shit he wrote about.
People naturally assumed the game was well-written because the reality of the situation was so crazy and fucked up, it could only happen in a world like Class of '09.
I'm reminded of how a mutual of mine states Borderlands 3 manages to be bad enough to retroactively make the previous Borderlands entries worse by its existence. Though I've never touched the series so I have no clue about the validity of his statement.
Ever since I heard how messed up the creator was, I always couldn’t shake the feeling that the “depth” and “social commentary” was all accidental and it never was “that deep.” I held onto the hope that it wasn’t an accident, and the game was supposed to be “deep” and “social commentary”, but the flip side ruined it all.
I feel like that sums up how I feel about the game too. Like before flipside, I saw Nicole as sort of a Bojack horseman type character where you know that they are horrible person but there is a chance that they can get better and you hope that they do but it seem like the creator wanted you to idolize Nicole like he does

He even says that Coach Colby rhymes with the name of the teacher at his high school who got suspended for "unsavory actions." - (Paraphrase and quotes)

Personally, I believed the first two games were meant to be satire since it had a lot of dark humor, which isn't something I really enjoy, but it called out a lot of creeps and made the weirdos out to be exactly what they are.
I heard it had a lot of inspiration from people and their terrible high-school experiences (while being over exaggerated for comedy), and it made me feel better since it reminded me of my own school experience. While I didn't like everything about it, this game was a comfort of mine. Finding a sense of community in the misery I felt while also having the characters call out at Nicole when she went too far.
It's sad, looking back on it now, that it never saw the creeps and terrible things they were making fun of as wrong, considering the creator is one and has done so many awful things. In hindsight, we should've seen this coming. I guess in different ways we were all tricked, or maybe it was just me.

Ngl, when I first heard about what happened with the Flipside, I felt catharsis. I never liked Co09, never liked the look of it, the setting, the characters, none of it. So learning that I was right in my hunch, that the games were all shit and an excuse for the author to flex their high school power fantasy felt so good. But learning why people liked them in the first place from this video really sours that. I still don't like the games, the justification has been cast. But the fans saw something in those characters, believed in these games.
It's one thing for a sequel to be disappointing, outright bad in some cases. Flipside doesn't even show on the leaderboard in that regard. But man, I feel for the fans, who now know that the things they liked, the deeper elements and themes, were accidental, and that the creator saw them less as earnest fanartists, writers or just people who liked the games, and more as fleas to be shaken off, even if that meant burning their series to the ground.
For example Jeffery (the self insert nerd guy) said on multiple occasions lines that sounded like they were straight out of r/Im14andthisisdeep, and everyone thought the joke was that it wasn't deep, turns out it was supposed to be deep

I have never played these games but maybe SBN3 didnt want the fandom of his games to become like south park or mha dont blame him
she’s much better as a deuteragonist who is the one person nicole cares about; i personally am a male-leaning bi(gay? idk I’m going through a crisis) man with a lot of female friends, and a lot of them like have one ride-or-die (friend?? they’re a bit too close for that atp) amongst everyone else; but of course not, SBN3 had to pull this and reverse the beautiful writing of the game he didn’t even intentionally make.
Something i like is how the women are more well written than the men; jecka’s summary is that she’s a girl who doesn’t know what she wants in life, moving around as she goes; nicole’s is a sociopath who learnt from her multiple events in each school she’s been to, etc… but sbn3 somehow mischaracterused his own characters. It’s a massive waste of potential.
I feel like the point for all 3 games were to make fun and annoy the audience, it's just that by the third game the audience changed

It was a spiritual precursor to the Joker Folie à Deux. The feet side needed more endings amd choices and less feet. For me it felt lazy and watching the creator uncreatively trash on a section of the fan base that I'm not a part of.

My biggest issue with co09 rn is people being like "NICOLE WOULDN'T DO THAT" yes she would. Yall glazed her so hard yall forgot she caused a school yk, she let a girl off herself in front of the class to prove a point about poetry and same story different ending she rewrites a racist book or whatever to get her teacher fired not because the teacher was a racist but just because she didn't like the teacher. She was also just completely fine with offing her mom. So with all of those points it makes complete sense she would be so mad at jecka that she would get with her father and put her toes in his mouth just to piss her off.
I really don't see too many people arguing that nicole wouldn't betray jecka, it's the reason she did that many people are saying is inconsistent with her previous actions. Jecka literally didn't give a shit when nicole lost her house and nicole STILL didn't actively try to get back at her, and there are many other smaller scale instances of that as well. What many people are saying is that the stakes needed to be fair bigger to justify the action. Even socipathic terrible characters need consistent characterization, or else the audience is thrown for a loophole and it's considered a clash in expectations, which is a bad thing.
nicole would 100% do something awful to get back at jecka but shed never do sexual stuff to her dad. its been stated multiple times about how much she hates old men

Think about it, if Nicole screwed over jecka multiple times in the last two games with no restraint, then would people really be shocked that she did in the third one?

I watched Doaenel's (a league of legends streamer/content creator) videos and streams of him playing this, and at first he had really enjoyed the first two games, but when he played the third, he had really disliked the lack of interaction in the game that was present in the first two games.
I completely agreed with his point of view. After finding about the trafficking ending, I am almost horrified with how the series has gone, the feet stuff weren't much of a problem from an outside view because it's generally not that nasty compared to literal human trafficking. It went from an interactive visual novel with engaging stories and endings to a thing where you just endure, trying to hope that you will reach a satisfying ending, but in the end you almost just feel depressed. Not satisfied, not wanting to carry on further with other endings, just wondering where the spark of the previous games went.
This game will still be one of my favourite simplistic new-gen games when I just ignore the third game, but it will always be in the back of my mind. SBN3 practically ruined a potential visual novel masterpiece due to unnecessary hate and grudges towards a specific audience.
I genuinely hope the anime doesn't include the third installment.

i dont think its that bad. i think its rather clever that we see nicole from outside the playable character's pov. plus, its the flipside. the whole concept is about showing the other perspective. just cuz jecka had bad endings despite being a better person doesnt mean the story is flawd.
