Cradle Carol (Words; Isaac Watts, Tune; Brian Kelly)
A cradle carol is sung to a new-born baby who is lying safe, comfortable and warm, and whose surroundings are contrasted with the very basic circumstances of the birth of Jesus. Isaac Watts’ Cradle Carol (aka Cradle Hymn or Cradle Song) was first published in 1706 in his ‘Moral Songs’
Rosie introduces the song with the opening lines of Shakespeare’s ‘Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind’ from As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII -
Blow, blow thou winter wind, blow, blow thou winter wind
Thou art not so unkind as man’s ingratitude, man’s ingratitude
