Dave Winder at The Bridge Folk Club – There Are No Lights On Our Christmas Tree (Cyril Tawney)
Dave Winder at The Bridge Folk Club, 11 December 2023
There Are No Lights On Our Christmas Tree (Cyril Tawney)
It’s the start of December and here we go with an early Christmas song, a great one from a master writer. The Christmas season seems to begin earlier every year; shops have had displays of all kinds of seasonal(?) merchandise for weeks, and trees are already in people’s house windows - but always with lights, not like the one in this song
Spoiler alert - there’ll be more like this on our Facebook page and UA-cam channel this month

Becky Mills at The Bridge Folk Club, 4 December 2023 Carols Out Of Season (Written by Becky) Becky’s mother had a saying; ‘Carols out of season cause tears for no reason’ (Becky has never found anyone else who knows of that so perhaps it was made up by her mother) We all know how the Christmas season seems to extend further every year but we’re into December now so Christmas references can be f...

Adam Holden at The Bridge Folk Club, 7 October 2024 Love Is Like A Bottle Of Gin (Stephin Merritt) Tremendous lyrics! Not quite the same as Shakespeare’s description of love but just as accurate The Bowery is a street in Manhattan, New York, USA. For a long time it has been the location of a lot of saloons and liquor stores
Jez Lowe at The Bridge Folk Club - This Is Not My Tribe (Words and music by Jez)

Jez Lowe at The Bridge Folk Club, 23 September 2024 This Is Not My Tribe (Words and music by Jez) This is about a man who becomes depressed every day at what he hears and sees on the news. It seems to him that there’s always just a small number of people influencing the awful events behind all of the trouble in the world and he wonders who these people are and where they might have come from. H...

Alpin McGregor at The Bridge Folk Club, 16 September 2024 Aisoun (Italian traditional waltz) This takes its name from Aisoun, a village high above Turin on the Italian/French border Alpin was finding it was taking more effort than usual to play this tune - you can see why at the end of the video 😊

VoiceMale at The Bridge Folk Club, 9 September 2024 New Railroad (American Trad) This originally came from the cotton mills of Lancashire, England, as a ballad called Single Girl; then it crossed to America, where it was adopted by railway workers, who changed some of the lyrics and added their ‘John Henry’ tradition. It was rediscovered by Rufus Crisp in Kentucky in 1948

Bill Elliott at The Bridge Folk Club, 23 September 2024 Leave Her Johnny, Leave Her (Trad) This capstan shanty was often the final song of a journey. At first it sounds as though the crew is sad to leave the ship but the lyrics go on to describe horrible conditions they had suffered through during the voyage. They would sing it without fear of punishment because they never sang it until very so...

Bill Dodds at The Bridge Folk Club, 21 October 2024 Moor Edge Nell (Words; Joe Wilson, Tune; Bill Dodds) This is one of Joe Wilson’s lesser-known songs, arranged by Bill to a new tune The Moor Edge of the song refers to the Town Moor in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Ann Howdon at The Bridge Folk Club, 7 October 2024 Plumbers And Jiners (Watt Nicoll) ‘A public toilet was a penny in the slot’ probably doesn’t mean much to a lot of people these days but our more mature followers will remember the days when the cubicles in public toilets in the UK could only be used by putting a (pre-decimal) penny into the lock and turning the handle to open the door. It’s wh...

Indeed there is, Janene The videos on Facebook are the same as the ones we post to UA-cam every day but we upload to both because some people prefer one channel over the other Anyone looking for the club’s Facebook page can reach it at Facebook: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057571355171
Thanks I found it. @@Bridge_Folk_Club
Beautiful. Thank you.
Excellent rendition!
Wonderful. Very timely. He has captured the division I am feeling in America. Thank you. I like the mix of old and new here.
Jez is definitely a gifted, top writer. He has very generously put lyrics to quite a few songs on his website at www.jezlowe.com/lyrics/. ‘Not My Tribe’ isn’t there at present but there are plenty of others
Yes, please. (I want more). Thanks. R.
You know a virtuoso when you see one and I just did this guy is it
Too funny. He did it well, however. Thank you.
Keep 'em coming Mike, the world needs more folk music.
Thanks, Jim
Delightfully sung. Thank you for this rare offering.
One of my favourite Bob Pegg (Mr Fox) songs and this is a great rendition.
Very nicely done! 👏👏👏
Again I need to thank you for the music, and the history behind the songs. They mean so much more to me when I read the background.
Thanks again for your continuing support, Janene. Some songs are wonderful just for themselves but lots of others have fascinating backstories and, like you, I love to understand how the lyrics have been influenced by circumstances
@Bridge_Folk_Club btw, if you are an art lover, Artwhisperer88 will be showing a few of my art pieces on his UA-cam channel soon. Maybe even tomorrow. He just emailed to let me know. Janene
@@janenef I'll certainly check it, thank you
@@janenef Hi Janene I’ve tried to get to Artwhisperer88 on UA-cam but the only thing I’ve been able to access was a video advertising the channel. I seem to have hit a brick wall. Sometimes videos aren’t available in all countries so maybe it’s an area thing If your work has been published I might be able to see it if you copy the exact link and send it to me, and if you’d rather have a conversation outside of UA-cam you’re welcome to email it to me at donellyg8z@gmail.com
Johnny is a bright star. I love it.
We all owe such a lot to Johnny. He was a huge influence during the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s and he is still entertaining us. Wonderful
Love performance, but what is the word I cant figure out. Sounds like danno
Hi Janene I’ll have a listen tomorrow night and check. Would ‘den - oh’ make sense?
@@Bridge_Folk_Club yes.

HO!
Beautifully done man!
I can spot gudn's and these are good. Thanks so much. R.
Thanks, Roger Liz and Flynn did a terrific guest night at The Bridge Folk Club and we’ll be posting more during the next few weeks for everyone to enjoy. Keep watching
Thank you for the music and the timely history lesson.
Thanks, Janene. I don’t know what happens in schools and colleges across the pond but over here in the UK the standard curriculum has huge gaps in the teaching of the struggles and persecution of ordinary working people. That’s just an observation, not a political comment, but when I’m in charge things will change! Anyway, it’s great that we have a lot of history to enjoy and learn from folk ballads Gan canny (stay well, take care)
Thanks for song and notes. Thorougly enjoyed it.
Finlay goes well with this. I'm most impressed that he appreciates the music of a past master and his want to perform it. R.
A good combination. R.
Wonderful. Enjoyed immensely. Thank you.
Delightful group and song. Thank you.
Probably my favourite of Bert's own compositions. Very nicely played and sung.
Perfect choice. Very nice. Thank you.
Thank you, Mary.
Couldn't get much better than this. Three cheers.
Well done. Thank you.
So fare ye well cold winter, fare ye well cold frost Nothing have I gained, me own true love I’ve lost I’ll drink and I’ll be merry when occasion I do see I’ll rest when I am weary let her go farewell she Last night I saw me true love in yonder shady grove She gave to me a smile, she gave to me a rose She thought I should have spoke to her as she was passing by Before I’ll humble to my love I’ll lay me down and die For if she has another lover and she treats me as a joke She thinks in her heart this will me provoke If she has another lover well I hope they both agree I rejoice at twenty let her go farewell she Take half a pound of reason a quarter pound of sense A small sprig of thyme and as much of prudence Mix them all together and then you’ll plainly see She’s a false deluding lover let her go farewell she
👍👍👍👍👍
brilliant artist either solo or with his bad pennies, one of the country,s finest song writers.
Love it. One I've never heard. Thanks heaps. R.
Delightful. Thank you.
Thank you for your description. I had not a clue what the lyrics meant. Very enjoyable.
Truly fantastic.
Lovely! This appears to be a variant of 'Locks and Bolts', 'Back o' Benachie', 'I dreamed last night of my true love' (See MainlyNorfolk).
I hadn’t realised the connection but you’re quite right. Thanks for pointing it out
Bill Dodds is one of my favorites. Thank you again.
Thanks, it's a great song isn't it.
Well sung, sir. Thank you.
I've seen Johnny many times over the years, both solo and with the Ranters, but some of the best were at the now sadly closed, "Strings Attached" club at South Gosforth, when he'd often play with his late brother, Brian Pandrich, both on the same piano, swapping sides like a couple of Marx Brothers.
An Icon. R.
Everyone in the folk world owes Johnny such a lot. An amazing, lovely man
Nice one Nick; a fine song by Martin
Wow ! I'm glad that other people outside Brittany learn breton music, brav eo, kaer tre eo ha plijus da selaou.
A favourite of mine. Glorious singing from Tom and such wonderful words from John
Very enjoyable. Thank you.
Well rehearsed and very well done. Thanks so much. R.
A true gem on the folk scene, wonder what his thoughts on your new gov are?
A mist comes crawling down the street To the corner where the kids all meet With fingers stiff and frozen feet To welcome cold November And underneath the pale gaslight We sang our song into the night All down each alley, sharp and bright To echo through November Come rain or fog you must be sure If you be rich or be you poor There'd come a knock upon your door It's only cold November And you never asked the reason why You spared a penny for the guy Or Roman candles in the sky To light up cold November And a poor Guy Fawkes must burn again It's a pity that he died in vain For I should like to do the same To celebrate November But your father’s standing by the gate And your mother’s in a right old state Son, don’t you know it’s far too late To wander through November But now I’m old and past me prime Out of season out of rhyme The kids today can’t find the time To welcome cold November
That was beautiful. With just snippets that I recognized of the story.
One of the best nights of music I can remember.
A folk club standard very well done. Thanks Brian Peters & Mike Donelly. R.
