  • Part 21 of 33 of a road trip from Brisbane to Tasmania, returning via Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Central Victoria, Great Alpine Road and Canberra.
Bicheno was a good access to the inland towns of Ross and Campbell Town that we would otherwise have missed. We drove back south past the turn to Coles Bay and turned into the Lake Leake Highway, named after the lake that it passes a little to the south. We visited the lake, a water storage with camping facilities and a commercial hunting lodge, before driving on to join the Midland Highway and turning south for Ross.
This historic town is known for its convict built bridge over the Macquarie River and its convict era houses that provide the bulk of accommodation in the town, to this day. The Ross Bridge is an artwork in stone masonry and worth the effort to view. There are magnificent churches, the Man 'O Ross Hotel and many other historic buildings. The original bakery is still in business and boasts the best vanilla slices in Tasmania, if not the World.
To the north of Ross, Campbell Town is a larger but no less historic town. It too has a convict built bridge but over the Elizabeth River. Old churches are still used or repurposed, and an interesting display of chain saw sculptures is located by the main street which is the highway to Hobart and Launceston.
We returned to Bicheno along the Esk Highway that runs beside the South Esk River for much of the journey, passing through Fingal and St Marys. This road joins the Tasman Highway, not far north of Bicheno, via Elephant Pass Road.
