  • Part 24 of 33 of a road trip from Brisbane to Tasmania, returning via Victoria's Great Ocean Road, Central Victoria, Great Alpine Road and Canberra.
Time was running out on our stay in Tasmania so we directed our attention to the north coast of Tasmania east of the mouth of the Tamar River. But first we took a cruise on the Tarmac near the city to see new developments. The old wharf area has been redeveloped into low rise residential and commercial areas to the extent that even a grain silo has been converted into a luxury hotel. The cruise completed; we drove the full length of the East Tamar River to the lighthouse on Low Head. From here we had sweeping views over the Tamar estuary, Bass Strait and along the coast to the east.
Inside the river mouth, the early navigators established a pilot Station, a service that operates from the sight to this day. Modern facilities have reduced the need for staff to be resident in the area, so most of the original buildings are tourist accommodation. We returned to George Town and then on to Bell Bay, which now is the port for northeastern Tasmania.
From here we toured the Piper River wine producing area. And then on to Bridport for lunch. We returned to Launceston via Scottsdale and the alternate route back to Launceston. This included a call at the Bridestowe Lavender Estate and Lilydale, with its iconic decorated power poles.
